Moto X 2014 - Camera Blur on right side only? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I am using the new Moto X (full unlocked retail model XT1097 sold in Brazil) for one month now.
I am really happy with the phone, *except* the camera. I am creating this topic for one specific issue: in daylight photos, even if the focus is correct, sometimes 1/3 of the right side of the photo (considering a landscape position with power/volume buttons on top) is completely blurry, even if the rest of the photo is correctly on focus.
Initially I thought it could be a physical problem with the lens, but then I noticed in some photos this problem does not occur.
I did an specific test under controlled situation (same photo, lots of light, steady position) and I was able to reproduce the problem.
Below is the comparison of two photos took with the new Moto X at the almost exact moment, showing only the detail of the right side that is completely blurred in one of the photos. The rest of the photos is completely sharp. Below are the full resolution photos I used for this comparison.
Question: did I get a lemon, or this is a generalized problem with the new Moto X where we can get random photos blurred on one side only? Does anyone have any ideia if this would be a problem with the camera itself, or is it some sort of software problem that can be fixed by Motorola?
Thanks!

BTW, I noticed this same problem in the arstechnica review. The new Moto X sample is on focus, but the right side is clearly blurred. This is evident when comparing the new Moto X sample with the iPhone 5s samples from arstechnica.com (see below, pay attention to how the fence and the road cone are blurred in the Moto X photo, while the rest of the photo is sharp).
So it seems in the end that my phone is not a lemon, and this seems to be a serious issue with the new Moto X camera...

I gave a look at all my photos and didn't found this issue. Also from Brasil, also 1097 with unlocked bootloader.

Thanks. This is a random issue, and it seems to happen only in daylight situations. Go figure...

Thanks! I hope that by the time Motorola releases Android Lollipop to the Moto X 2014 this and other camera issues could be fixed. :good:

If I were you I'd get a replacement, even though it may be a software issue I dont think its worth the gamble to see if Android L will fix it.

Here in Brazil I have one week to request a replacement with the retailer (and I have the phone for more than 1 month now). After this period, I need to send it back to the manufacturer warranty support. And this might take time, so I will keep it (the issue is random, and when I need decent good photos, I have a real camera... ). :good:

Purple tinge on my camera. Faulty sensor?

I believe my camera has faulty sensors. It seems to have a purple tinge in darker areas. Compared it with my brother's One and indeed, color on mine looks weird as hell around the shadows and darker areas.

So time to send it in to change a new camera module?
Are you rooted? Maybe you could try a different rom. I remember this happened when Chad (dev) was switching the rezound over to ion memory management.. Long story short the cameras had a purple tint which he said could be memory leak. So given that experience I think it could be software.
I talk to much lol. If it were my phone id exchange it.

Make sure you have not set a certain non auto white balance, and make sure you are not applying a filter to all photos (the camera app can apply filters before photos are taken, the button at the right bottom). If they all checked out, then it's probably faulty sensor.

Nope. Everything stock, non rooted. One is the only phone I got so far that makes me feel I should stay stock. Everything just flies on stock launcher.
I've restored factory settings and its still the same. Looks like I have to send my phone for repairs then:silly:

[Q] Help:HTC One Camera Won't Focus,ALways blurry,see photos&video attached.

hi all.
this is my 2nd htc one as the 1st i had had a half black'd screen problem out of nowhere.(photo 1)
the auto focus wouldnt work especially in close range shots.
photo 2,3,4,is the shots , this 2nd htc one took.when i got this replacement i noticed this problem but didnt care as i dont use camera too often, but when i had a close look at it today, the focus would do auto focus reapeatedly for a like many times then stoped there ,with a very blurry picture,no matter how many times i press the screen to make it focusd, just wont do it.
unless i suddenly move the camera to take a further picture,it would focus a bit, but later when i stopped moving and stood my arm still, it happens again. only 1 or 2 photos i took out of 30 would be a "good" one like photo No.5 , but still not perfect at all...
check out the youtube video clip i uploaded to show you whats the video is like took by this camera...
Thinking this was strange behavior, I gave up .seeing as how I was able to take about 30 clear pictures while manually focusing before, went ahead and closed all apps, changed view modes, changed camera scenes, toggled from video to picture modes, restarted the phone several times and checked for available updates to the firmware. All with no luck.
My current firmware is still 4.1.2, as OTA hasnt arrived in my country NewZealand yet...damn...whats taking it so long.
will the new 4.2.2 fix this or should i just bring it back for another repaire (becuase most likely in NZ,it sux bcz you will not get a replacement straight away after a month) ?

Well these are horrible pics
I'd suggest using the option of touch to focus+snap.
Once you allow this option and you tap the screen it focuses and immediately snaps a photo, in my opinion it brings the best pics.

If that cheer you, gents, I have EXACTLY the same problem. My One was never dropped, nothing mechanically-abusive happened to this dmn phone, lens are crystal-clear - because I use the protective case.
My guess is faulty camera, which gets fckd up after some time of using it.
In my case, camera stopped working after OTA update to 4.3. I would blame the software update, but since so, so many folks have the same issue with totally various firmwares I'd rather go into thinking that this is a hardware failure.
One advice: if you are sure they're gonna give you new device, go for it. However, these bastards often try to "repair" the damn thing, which is of course the worst idea ever - they're never gonna put all pieces together, rather more likely, they will destroy 10 another things along the way.
I got to have to make a call to HTC - if they start talking about "the repair" - fck'em.
I will have to live with broken camera. I once gave the HTC One X, under warranty of course, and they did a mess to the device (squeaky noises while grabbing it, wifi module - broken almost immediately, after "the repair", battery life shorter more than a half than before giving it to "repair" and so on).
So, thanks, but no thanks.
I have the same problem, there isnt a way to repair it by software or something??

Depends on the lighting so not much can be done.
I've had the problem with my X once. It was in Hershey Park Arena (the old one) in one of the halls, taking a picture of a logo on a wall.
I've never seen it since. So it may be related to specific lighting conditions.
What happens at home, under low non-florescent lights?

Under non fluorscent lights, it is fine.
why i am worried is, i am using this phone from 5 months, and recently this change is observed and
at the same place , with the same model (moto x) doesnt show this lines/this behaviour.
so i thought this is problem my handset itslef.

from what you are describing it sounds like the issue only arises in just the right conditions. that means your camera hardware is probably fine and the problem can be seen as software related. Moto X camera software doesn't give you much in the way of settings to mess around with, so you should try third party apps that do have more settings. Maybe a more photography enthusiastic user can chime in here, but I'd think trying an app that has settings for different lighting conditions, stuff like white balance, etc might help.
I use stock camera myself, and not that much at that, but I do notice you can get completely different exposure of the same scene in the same lighting if you change something like the manual focus or the angle of your shot.
I have a Moto X and was facing a similar problem. Using a third-party camera app named CameraMx solved it for me! I dont know why or how but it worked for me! That app seems to correct those black and white lines in some way! Hope it works for u too!

Camera struggles to focus

Hello,
I simply love my moto g but the same cannot be said about the camera. I find that the camera struggles to focus especially during close ups. I wonder if this is a problem with moto g camera module or should it be fixed via the next update? Tried Google camera also. Same problem.

Are you using the drag to focus (or tap to focus for google camera)? although I've just tested mine and mine is focusing and refocusing between distance and very close automatically no problem.
I did read on another thread that it focuses using differences between shapes so focusing on a plain uniform surface won't be very reliable.
What do you intend for "close"?
I take some photos at 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 cm
The best distance is 25cm. Under this distance it can't focus properly.

Depends, mine can focus clearly all the way to ~6cm from the subject but the way the phone focuses it requires a definite 'hard contrast area' to focus on, although in your examples you do seem to have that (assuming you're trying to focus on the corner of the object above), if you try to focus on an area without much 'change' in the surface it won't focus.
Could you share a pic with 6cm focus please?
I still sincerely hope they fix the camera in the upcoming update. The camera on the moto g is a major let down despite being an improvement over the previous generation in terms of resoultion.

I only said approx 6cm, if you see the actual focus is just past 6cm and from testing earlier it will reliably focus at 7cm providing the light is good. You need plenty of light and hard edges for it to focus properly and you have to put the auto/manual focus directly on the hard edge for it to focus.

I have the same problem............
Just got this for my wife to.replace her old iPhone 4S. So far she is very unimpressed by the camera quality and the lack of focus accross the room. As it shifts through focal lengths it can get a crisp pictire but autofocus never stops at the right spot.
*edit* just purchased Camera FV-5. Had to boost the contrast and saturation in the app, but focusing is way better.
I too have this problem, I sometimes need to quickly take pictures of a page in a book for a quote, and the camera simply won't focus on the text at all. The moto g turbo used to do a great job, I thought I was getting an upgrade, but the g 4 plus camera focus on close objects and text is horrendous. Do you think an update will fix it?

Dim dim dim

Man, I went in with the full intention of buying this today, but the screen was SHOCKINGLY dim. Turned it all the way up. Dim. Thank god my Verizon store is dumb and has the droid table right by the door, so some light was coming in, because I'm site it would not have seemed as bad in the dimmest back corner. Then they had Note4 nest to it, seems out was very bright, sip as to emphasize the Turbo shortcoming even more. Guess I'll wait for Nexus

Just go to settings>system>system update.
my turbo seems bright. Haven't had any issues in the sun. I have been surprised by the reviews saying how low the nits are and how dim the screen is. No issues here.
My be that update though as said before.
Mines not dim in the slightest, took it outside while watching softball it was fine, just as bright as my daughter's note 3
Been in two different VZW stores and have seen 6 different Turbo's and I 100% agree. The screen is a deal breaker. Compared to my Z3, the turbos screen is disgusingly bad, both in brightness and color reproduction.
Really bummed about it too because the rest of this device is amazing.

People need to confirm which build they are viewing. There was the day 1 update and many people who have the updated are saying their brightness is fine. There's no patch notes to yet to prove it was altered, but I think its a worthy thing to check if that fact is the only deal breaker for you. You might even be able to update the store models and see a difference.
Newest build is 21.21.15.en.US I believe.
