So.... my car got stolen (from a underground "secure" parking spot too), and my Nexus one was in the car. And no we didn't find the guys who took it, but we did recover the car relatively in tack.
now the question. I loved my rooted Nexus One. Had lots of fun with it and it did everything I needed. But it was damn expensive as I bought it for AT&T.
The Samsung Captivate came out for AT&T.
Do I fork over the funds for a nexus one? $500 +
Or do I pick up a samsung Captivate ~$200...
or wait for some other option ....

If you do a ton of things that can only be done when rooted, a N1 will probably be your best option. I'd also wait a bit and see some of the reviews that the Captivate gets from different news sites.
Shouldn't your insurance cover that?
No matter what phone you get, it will never compare to the quick experience of the N1.
Sure, you might get a phone with a better screen, slightly better proc, or whatever, but
no matter what phone you buy, I don't think there will be anything QUITE like owning the
officially sanctioned 'google phone'. I think you'll miss always having the latest version of
android running at all times.
@GldRush98 no.... AT&T doesn't offer insurance on the google phone, and the policy of the car didn't cover personal items in the car....=/
@hollywooder - yah.... You've definitely described my sentiments.... that and I have many many peripherals.... but the idea of realizing that my phone would have effectively cost me over a $1000 is a bit tough to swallow.
If I were you, I would probably go with Captivate.
I'd be missing the trackball and flash though.

AT&T doesn't? Man, that sucks. T-Mobile insures the Nexus One!
On top of everything else, I'd seriously think about purchasing WaveSecure for your next phone whether it be an Android, iPhone, or Blackberry. Well worth it for the ability to do realtime tracking of where your phone is. Hell, you could have probably found the guys still in your stolen car if you had it. Just me .02
@chesh420 I do have wave secure... that was part of the reason why I was able to find the car...was able to track it to the last known area before the battery died. Found our car a few blocks away. but alas the phone was long gone, either they got rid of it some how, or haven't turned it back on yet, or my nexus might have recieved some other horrible fate.
but yes.... A great endorsement to WaveSecure. .
But yes, Wave Secure was great

Keep watching, the bozos might turn it back on after they figure out what a MicroUSB is. Or they'll sell it to Bob's Pawn....
Note to self... Write down IMEI.
That's a bummer...hopefully it will turn back up soon! At least there's a chance with WaveSecure.

Damn, that sucks. Insurance companies do whatever they can to get out of paying
but what if the low life finds a way to remove wavesecure? isnt there a way to stop them from deleting apps like wavesecure or mobile defense so we are still able to track the phone down?
i'd get a g1 and wait for the next great thing from htc and google. i've said it in a few different threads now, the 3g issues and no physical keyboard are the reasons.
given, i won't buy anything on contract.
when you used wavesecure to find your car, can you remote wipe before locating, and the app still gives you a location ? did you try instamapper and decide on wavesecure instead ?
I'm recommending the Captivate to my friends and family... but to a guy like you and me... I can't recommend the Samsung until a little more testing surfaces. Sure it has a little better specs but would you be happy using their crappy software forever if you are unable to root and flash custom roms?
I used to cook with Da_G back when we had Samsung Blackjacks and the Samsung stuff was pretty tight lipped compared to HTC. You'd think that company's would figure out that being able to mod phones increases sales. They should know that the bottle neck is the carriers contracts and we upgrade asap regardless.
Open the phone up, let us tinker and make it everything we can dream of, which will bring in more customers.
I know lots of the Samsungs can be flashed, which hopefully helps with unlocking the potential of the Captivate. Maybe pick you up a cheap $20 pre-paid to use until some more info comes out.
Make sure you call your carrier and get the IMEI banned, they will not be able to use the phone anywhere
@player911 - yah.... that's the way i'm feeling.... I think that ultimately spending another $500 for an N1 for another 5-6 months seems a bit pricey for my modding happiness. I'll hang in there and head back to my little nokia n95 brick for a while.... and see what I can find on craig's list for a used one for cheap. But yah.... I mirror your sentiments on the samsung
@xXJay_RXx I think Wave secure had an additional install that would notify if it was removed or something like that.... I can't seem to remember....
@ohgood - You can remote lock on wave secure with a message that pops up to whoever turns it on. It can say "return for a reward", or in my case " contact the police RE: case #". I left it on lock for a while and the sent the notification to remote wipe after we found the car and wrote off the nexus one.
@p00r -can't remember to imei #
If it were me, I would not buy it again and wait out for something else. My reason is because the N1 is a really expensive phone off contract and it just doesn't seem like a good deal as it was 6 months ago. There are and probably will be better options for the same price.
If the price were lower, I would go for it. But it doesn't seem like you can find a new one without forking over full price.
yah.... especially since now my only choices are ebay and criags list..... =/ Long Live N1
Random question I know, but thought this would be a great place to ask.
I'm looking for a cheap Android device (doesn't necessarily have to be a phone) for my girlfriend that CAN access Google Apps, specifically Google Voice. This is going to be a wifi-only device, so no carrier plans etc. Just Google Voice/Email etc via Wifi.
I've looked on Amazon and they have some Archos devices and other funky tablets on there (ie this one: http://www.amazon.com/Tablet-Internet-Player-Google-Android/dp/B003V0I75Q ) but they almost assuredly don't have access to Google Apps. It's also higher than I'm willing to pay... Ideally a sub-$100 Android device. (This will basically be a throw-away device so I can message my girlfriend through Google Voice since she doesn't have any phone at all.)
I also searched eBay but phones actually cost quite a bit there. I looked into "bad esn" ones too, but there aren't many.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Any tips on getting an inexpensive one?
A used G1 off of craigslist or ebay could work. You might be able to find one between $75-$100.

How do you like it? Would you recommend it?
Is the resistive touch-screen responsive?

I like it, the resistive screen isn't bad at all. Scrolling can be tough if your used to capacitive. No multitouch either.
I would recommend it based on price and it is capable of doing every task ive given it. Just don't expect a speed demon and it is missing gps, camera and caps at wireless g.
Is there such a thing as a pocket size Android device that is not a phone - but has all the other features of a smartphone ?
In other words, a wifi-only Droid/Evo/Thunder/HD2 ?
I was struck by what someone said about the Nook Color, that they did not need the camera or the microphone, because their pocket phone has those things. I do not have a smartphone, because I do not want a big monthly data bill.
But I could use something that could scan UPC codes (or QR codes), take quick photos, and could do voice activated tasks that do not need the nice large screen of the Nook.
Thanks !

Maybe someone else can back me (or correct me) up on this as I'm just taking an educated guess here, but any deactivated phone would do this. If you're only looking for a wifi version, that is. You might wanna look into it more, but picking up an old Droid (probably pretty cheap) would work. You would have access to the market via wifi and all that.
yep get used droid, you can use its camera, gps, download textfree/pinger and get text messaging

If you want something radical try, www alwaysinnovating.com/products/minibook.htm
There is also the samsung galaxy pmps, www linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-Galaxy-Player-4-and-5/
Also look at Archos, but their smaller units tend to be resistive touch screens so check the descriptions well.
And finally a google search for 'android pmp camera' should turn up a couple hits.

This is my thinking on the matter, too and is the reason why I still use a cheap Chinese Windows Mobile 2G clone phone through T-mobile. However, I've noticed that Phone companies are starting to roll out small data plans for about $10.00 a month. That might be enough to get me to finally buy a smart phone, given that I'd mostly use WiFi for data.
Once tethering plans become affordable I'll probably go with that, but I'm talking $15.00 a month on top for data & tethering, and who knows when (or if) prices will ever reach that level (especially with AT&T swallowing up T-Mobile... yaaay, go duopoly!)
Samsung is making one galaxy player I think its going to be called

Too bad reviews say it is terrible
I would say simply wait for the Samsung Galaxy Player to actually be released, hopefully this spring.

I am now looking into this, there are lots of Droids on ebay.
I assume that "BAD ESN" only matters if you are going to use it as a cell phone, and for Wifi use, it would not matter ?
Also, I noticed in the completed listings that some with cracked screens sold for just as much as ones without flaws. Why is this ? Is there some easy way to get the screen fixed ? (Just curious on this one.)
Anyone else having this error when trying to playback purchased content? If I hammer the play button, I'll get a film to start (and then stop again if I try to seek anywhere). A Play Store rep I talked to said that if a reboot doesn't fix the issue (which it doesn't: my device is set to reboot every morning at seven), then that means my device is "unsupported."
Needless to say, I'm somewhat incredulous at this claim. Anyone out there having this issue? I'm having a lot of trouble believing it's because of the one real difference on my phone (namely, that it's rooted), considering I had no trouble using a rooted Galaxy Nexus to play this content, but if such is the case I'd love to know.
It's a compatibility issue with the one. Sucks. Just get a refund. That's what I had to do. Google movies is not affected by root like it was in the past.

I have enough other devices that I don't mind, but that's actually beyond belief-- on both HTC and Google's parts.
So, any ideas where I can pick up on of these? Im looking for the 12GB version. I live in the US and I dont need it to be preinstalled with the play store. That I can do myself.
The best one for me is Liaow.

I found out that Liaow doesn’t have a return policy so, that means I won’t be buying from them. It’s not that I plan on returning the phone but, I don’t want anyone opening my phone but me. I can add the google playstore all by myself. But they say they do this to inspect the phone. I don’t like it.
