Hey everyone, I just got my Note 4 yesterday and ran into some pretty big S Pen issues. I haven't seen anyone else post about this or make videos about this so I'm assuming this is just an isolated incident. Basically, the S Pen doesn't work along a vertical band that stretches up the entire device. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, did you find a way to fix it? (factory reset, re-calibration, etc)?
I'm going to try a factory reset soon and see if that fixes it. I just wanted to post about it in this forum just in case it's more common than I thought. Here's a video on it.
Stop slapping '#gate' at every little thing.
Please. Just stop.
This is not happening to me, it's just a defective unit.
doesn't happen on mine
It's hardly a common issue. This makes the whole "gate" thing even more embarrassing.
It's clearly just a defective unit. Likely a faulty wacom digitizer if it only affects the spen. Any phone can get a faulty touchscreen too.
Good to know this isn't a common thing so far. The Note 4 was just released yesterday in the US so I wasn't sure if it was an issue specific to the US variant. There were originally two bands that didn't work on my phone then all of a sudden one of them started working again. Maybe this will go away with time, but I'm still definitely going to do an exchange once I can.
I understand that "Pengate" may be an irritating title, but I wanted to make sure people were aware of this so they check their S Pens right when they get their notes. It's not often that someone uses the S Pen to write on the entire screen so dead spots might go unnoticed for months which would put a lot of people out of the easy exchange period where they could just swap out their phone at the store they bought it from. Dealing with manufacturers for defects always takes way longer than it should so the idea was to help avoid that hassle.
Mine too!
Believe it or not I have the same issue though the area where the pen won't write is different. Also the pen can be quite unresponsive and unreliable at times.
I'll see if there's a fix that comes up or if I also have a defective unit.
Oh no not another "gate" troll thread!
What does "gate" have to do with anything you have written about? it is simply unnecessary.

Thanks for that. I was thinking that I'd accidentally just stumbled on to macrumors.com.
No problem here with my unit. Tried to do a software reset ?

Thanks for the post. I'd definitely get it back to wherever you got yours and see if you can exchange it for a new one. Even if there is a way to fix it I'm still not sure how much I'd trust that it wouldn't happen again sometime shortly after my warranty ran out. Do you have the US version or the international version? I'm wondering if this is just a US version issue.

I'll give you that. "Gate" comes from the Watergate scandal. People are throwing "gate" onto the end of anything they think is a big deal. While this Note 4 issue may not be a big deal (we won't know for another week or so since the US version was just released yesterday), I decided to use "gate" to intentionally draw attention to it. More people would click it and spread the word about a potential issue that most people wouldn't find quickly enough to be able to fix it without going through Samsung. Is it a "cheap" way of spreading the news? Absolutely, I won't disagree with that. But it's spreading the news so people don't end up with the RMA hassle in case this does become a widespread issue with the US version of the Note 4. The US version was only released yesterday and so far 4 people have messaged me saying they have the same issue with their Note 4's only a few hours after posting the video.
I'm sorry for the irritation. I had a feeling some people would get offended by the title, but couldn't think of a better way to spread the news quickly.
No problem with my spen. Did u check ur case? Spen cannot write on the place where magnet is located
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
I had two blind spots on the right side of my Note 4 where the SPEN didn't work.
Reason: My case contains two magnets which interfere with the SPEN.
Remove case, try again, still there?
Return for a replacement.

A local Ebola outbreak is something you want to spread the news of quickly. A potential and yet unproven mobile device defect not so much. You're obviously articulate. I think your title was carefully chosen for the effect it created.
Widespread problems on a device self-identify. Sensationalism just drives hypochondriacs. If this really is a problem of note we'll know soon enough.
SM-N910 L Korean Exynos version here, spen is working fine. Unit is in my possession for two weeks now and no problems whatsoever.
This is not a #gate problem..... hopefully that phone can be exchanged soon.

That's a fair point. This is absolutely a first world problem where the worst effect of people not knowing about this just results in a headache with RMAs. When we compare this to Ebola, world hunger, or the widespread sex trafficking happening all over the US it really makes any tech topic dumb to complain about or quickly spread news about.
Aside from that I just realized another negative effect of using #pengate. Hardcore Apple fans would likely grab that and start making irritating arguments about how Apple makes the best phones in the world because of #pengate. Conversely, hardcore android fans may see this as an attack on android instead of just a heads up.
Next time I find something like this I'll be more careful at picking a tag to spread news quickly. BTW, I appreciate your well articulated arguments against using "gate". You make you point well without needing to be offensive. :good:

Hello all i am new to the sight and to "smartphones" and im thinking about getting the Att tilt. But i have heard mixed reviews on the phone most dealing with battery life and other issues. I also am curious about the touch flo and how to make my screen look like an iphone but i have no idea how to do any of this stuff. So what im looking for is pros and cons about the phone and the best add ons to put on the phone. Please help me im a noob when dealing with smartphones/pda's and i NEED guidance.
sweet. Let me guide you right on up to the search function, right up there ^..
Or use either of the 2 linkings in my signature.
And as to why you should get a tilt, it's simple. Because you want one.
You should not buy a Tilt. You should not buy an iPhone. You should get a tin can and a string.
Rule #1, do not start meaningless threads, especially ones that have been hashed out 1,000 times already. Instead, search and then reply to someone elses "should I get a Tilt or iPhone" thread.

Oh then maybe he can wait a little while (say 12 hours) to see if the Iphone2 is coming out.
DOH, still no keyboard or tilt function, which is Uber duber.

be careful doing a Google image search of the word yay at work. There are naughty bits.
I love how one asks a simple question and the rest of the community flames him. These are the types of answers that draws people away. You never know. That one person who you all are beeing so harsh on, might actually be the one to come out with real drivers for the tilt... Doesn't hurt to imagine....
Anyway to his answer: If you live in the USA then I would recommend the tilt. I personally find it the best phone out here but its not reccommended for the average user. The tilt does have a lot of problems though. One of the most noticable one is the camera, which moves tremendesly slow in low light condition but is real good if you have good lighting in your area.
Or you can wait till the new Xperia, Touch Pro to come to the US (which is what I'm doing, and yes I own a Tilt)

Correction: the camera is = to **** with low light. My friends old ass nokia phone from 1943 took a clear cripst picture with low light vs. my "high tech" tilt in the same light. In fact, the picture didn't even exist cause it couldn't autofocus!
I also highly recommend the device. It's pros definitely outweigh its cons. Yes, as said before, the camera isn't good at all with low light. Touchflo just lets you scroll using your fingers and right now it went commercial to FtouchSL. If you want your device to look like the iPhone, look into iFonz.
i recommend you get this phone. i guarantee u wont regret it

you can send you phone to me, i'll flash whatever rom you want.
as far as the op trying to decide whether or not to get a tilt, i love my tilt, in fact i had an issue with it and when att offered me a "better" phone of comperable value(iphone and treo 750) as a replacement, i laughed and told them that if they ever insulted Lucy(my phone) again like that i would switch to t-mobile to get the front facing camera. as long as you have att you will be dissatisfied with them, but the tilt kicks ass. most people look at it and laugh when i tilt the screen up but when you use a phone that can't do that after three months with the tilt it almost hurts inside.
then again it's all a matter of preference, much more freedom with the tilt than the iphone, and if you really want the phone to look like the iphone, REALLY REALLY bad then clilck the link in my sig(my files) and it'll take you to the place to get the home screen and some decent apps to be more iphone-ish. best of luck hope you choose wisely

actually this isn't just about android, the same **** happens in forms about everything from TV series, movie stars to books and video card manufacturers, who knows.
What happens is whenever I make a post about something negative about whatever is discussed in the forum, everyone wants to kill me. I mean what the ****? Nothing is perfect okay? It’s a sad fact of life, learn to accept it?
It would seem to me that many people here tend to think their awesome magical super multitasking gigantic 6.99in. screen octa-core hyper-fast android phone with 35 home screens 126 gadgets, running a different LWP on each homescreen, customized to the last pixel, rooted even before being produced, quad-led flash and 82mp camera with 10x optical zoom and phase-detect autofocus and optical inferred, ultraviolet, x-ray mode, with photon-multiplying night vision, with built-in light saber, smartphone. Is the most perfect phone ever to be conceived since before the Big Bang, never to be seen again, not in this universe, or any other coming after it, or any other parallel to it, by any intelligence, divine or not, alive or not, carbon based or not, organic or mechanical, conscious or not. Not even the all-powerful all-knowing omnipotent omniscient Yahweh can reproduce, or even conceive its intricate design.
It’s just so sad whenever I post something going against such a belief without repeatedly expressing it was definitely caused by my own stupidity and inability to write my own operating system with machine language from the ground up blind folded one handed on a phone, debugging it, and installing it on the very same phone, without any other device or help. It seems that if I don’t do that, I am not allowed to say anything negative about android or people would try to kill me.
I know you have your explanations, you call it the “constructive criticism” standard. Something like, as I understand it, if I wanted to say something bad about android, I better have a solution for it. So if I don’t have a solution we should just sweep it under the rug and never mention it? Why is that? Cuz someone might get upset? I mean how pathetic? Like does your life’s sole purpose depend on the invincibility of the argument of your phone’s perfect design?
Now let me say something more serious. You shouldn’t find your confidence in your phone, or the brand of your motherboard, or the price of your watch, or the horsepower of your car, or the cup size of your girlfriend. Because all these, one day they won’t be there with you, they all diminish with time. So go find something more worthwhile, so you don’t get mad when people convince you that your phone isn’t perfect.
Well, I want to kill you for making a hard to read post.

You make a thread titled "Android is not perfect" and don't give a single reason why it's not perfect. Instead you go insulting those who use the operating system (Which I would hardly call constructive criticism). Yes most of us realize that Android is not perfect. Software will never be perfect. There will always be better and more things to add. Now I agree with you in that some people take the specs of their phone way too seriously but that is not the majority of users.
P.S. It's not just Android people that will get mad if you start insulting. If you go to an Ubuntu forum and telling them that Linux is crap, they will yell at you. Same with an iPhone forum.

I was disappointed to find the Play store broken and then the Nexus 4 sold out when it reappeared on the day of it's "launch".
Probably not as disappointed as the people who did place an order and then didn't get their phone and are still waiting though.
With no idea of when it's coming back into stock and the busiest shopping day of the year in the US tomorrow, the Nexus 4 is going to lose the traction in the media and minds of the public that it had.
If the rumors about no stock until December are true, a lot of people will buy something else. As it is, there are already new handsets appearing (like the HTC Droid DNA) and if we see similar shortages and a similar clusterf*** on the sales and fulfillment side of things, getting phones before Xmas could well be doubtful, certainly getting a defective phone could mean no chance of a return/replacement if being purchase for a Christmas present.
I had to laugh when many of the Android blogs are leading with a story about the official N4 bumper case... and the comments to those articles are full of anger from Google customers still waiting for the phone, never mind the case.
When do you call this "launch" more of a failure to launch?
As far as I am concerned, it's a FAIL.
I guess it depends on who's looking at it,right?

It's easy to sell anything out if you only have a tiny number of them
And with no system for taking orders, no information of when new stock is arriving and in some cases no shipping date for people who did manage to order, I'd say a lot of that demand could trickle away.
They are certainly making Apple look good.
Another useless thread.... It is what it is. Starting another thread isn't going to fix anything.

If you can let us know how many Google had for sale that would be nice, as I take it you have the exact stock numbers to back that statement up.
The Nexus 4 is a marketing win for Google and the Android brand. Whether we get to use or like the phone is besides the point. Reviews of the glass sealed phone have been written and published. Done. On to the next Nexus phone for Google.

Why would I need the exact stock numbers? I just stated that when you introduce very few devices into the channel, it's easy to sell out and create the impression of big sales.
Apple have been doing this for years.
Did it take Google by surprise? That a phone they've been pushing... sorry... leaking, for 2 months and got blanket press coverage - which was then sold at an abnormally low price - sold out quickly.
Man, that is such a surprise! And after the Nexus 7 as well!
The big surprise is that 10 days later they still haven't got any more stock and are about to enter the run up to Christmas, with, yes, you guessed it, no stock and no word on when they will have stock.
I recommended the Nexus 4 to three friends, one of whom dropped their iPhone 4 into water at the end of last month and was looking for a replacement. They won't wait for ever and that guy went out and bought an iPhone 4S yesterday.

I have my N4 and the failure began on the 13th when Google didn't ship on a first come basis.
The failure continued with Google's refusal to acknowledge customer's complaints and did not relay correct information to support.
I understand how a big launch works and I understand **** happens, but Google's ignoring of the issues and leaving support to fend for themselves by lying does nothing but harm the reputation of the company and hurts the consumer.
I know I will think twice about ordering from the Play store again, I didn't learn my lesson with the N7.
Love this phone !!!

I would be, because as I mentioned above, I recommended this phone to other people.
Almost normal people.
You know - the kind of people who don't sit next to their browser hitting the refresh button 20 times a minute.
It's quite normal to sell out of a new device at launch. It's less normal to then have no stock for 10 days and no information.
(Although I grant you, it's quite normal for Google to not give information).
Sold out. Good phone. Therefore not a failure imo.
Samsung please increase the frequency of the PWM to such values that the amplitude don't drops to zero.
Just make all the same as in the samsung amoled displays of Fly IQ444 Diamond 2 Quattro and Motorola Razr HD, and lg amoled displays of lg G Flex.
This flickering is harmful to the eyes (especially at low light). It appears at 70% (and below) brightness

and, he NEVER wants to contact any phone mfg. himself with these "problems", he expects them to come HERE and respond to him...Geez....

DisplayMate makes the equipment used to test displays of all kinds across industries. They do exhaustive tests on smartphone displays and the Note 4's is the reigning champ. Even outperforming both iP6's.
Here's their evaluation. Everyone can draw their own conclusions.

Why don't you provide some more scientific evidence rather than just posting some random youtube videos (measurements, etc.)? I have never seen an amoled flicker myself so measurements would be great. And I really don't understand what scientific basis you have for saying that any sort of flicker is harmful for the eyes.
maybe if he actually OWNED these devices, his posts would be more credible, but he just posts crap he gleans of the internet, and tried to represent it as actual fact..
not worth bothering with him any more, he is just a troll

Can you explain to us poor dumb slobs what this means to the average person? Maybe state your case of why you think this is a bad thing? I was under the impression that all lights flicker - alternating current and all that.

Thanks! But how would that affect the battery life? I also don't think it is a large enough problem for most people, as none other than yourself and maybe a few others have reported any problems (think it is basically the same as seeing rainbows on DLP projectors; some see it, some don't).
Also, if the x-axis on that graph is in ms (milliseconds), it is obvious that at worst the display is turned off for 2ms (1/500th of a second), and that is way beyond what a normal human being would be able to notice.
Oh, and I would also like to see a comparison to other displays as most LCDs these days have LED backlights that also flicker; doubt the guys over at Oculus would have picked an amoled display if the flicker was that bad.

When there is a total damping to zero it is harmful to the eyes. In the long reading on the average and low brightness appears eye fatigue. Over time can be reduced eyesight. Perhaps there is an impact on the brain and psyche.

I wrote the mods about you too. You pick random findings from questionable sources then post them without context solely for the purpose of antagonizing people and goading them in to arguments. You've been run out of every thread you've done that in because it's pretty transparent.
The reason I referenced DisplayMate is that with their mastery of display science if what you posted was in any way relevant they would have certainly caught it. They are credible to me. You are not.
Useless thread is that, but let's hope Samsung will see this thread......................................................................
Until then, Thread Closed.
Hello,
I need help. This probably sounds ridiculous, but its actually a very heavy subject between me and my girlfriend. Its the cause of endless fights between us, and inspires an every-looming lack of trust she has in me. And it honestly feels like theres NOTHING i can even do about it, because i sincerely do not have an answer for her questions, nor do i even know how to explain the things shes seeing in my phone. Im not an android guy, and shes not exactly a tech person period...which makes this even more frustrating. But anyways, i'll move on...
So heres the gist of it, and some rough examples.
My gf will pick up my phone, and start going thru it. (Which isnt a problem, i have nothing to hide) And she'll use these 3rd party apps to look at/look for APK files, and **** like that, and these apps she uses tell her these apps were 'user' installed (as opposed to preinstalled or whatever), and then she asks me where i downloaded those thing from. And before i go any further i should explain, that for some reason, she flips out if she thinks i installed an app from anywhere other than Google Play Store...and God honest truth yall, i do NOT. I think she trips out because she sees me use Github and stuff on my laptop (i use linux) and she sees i can put pretty much any program from any source on any device... and that for some reason makes her feel like im being sneaky, or doing malicious things. -_- But anyways, she sees this stuff, and accuses me from downloading it from other places besides GooglePlay, and i swear to her i dont, and it causes HUGE issues yall.. like major. I dont get it, because first off, even if i DID, who the **** cares? I dont see why it even matters to her. But Secondly, she accouses me of lying to her about the source of such stupid apps, like "Google Play Services"...thats the most recent one... and she makes me so god damn mad because i didnt even download it, and more importantly didnt download it from another source...its maddening.
We've had other areas of focus before too... like several times shes tripped out when she decided to look at app permissions of everything in my phone and began wondering why everything has such extreme permissions and such...and somehow i feel like she thought i was doing something to spy on her or monitor what shes was doing..and yea, that was a fun time. And sometimes i dont even have an answer period...Like she'll ask about an app and when i see it im like "i never downloaded that", or "i dont remember even putting that on my phone".... but then she thinks im lying (which once again i find so maddening) or hiding **** from her, and as usual we fight and we fight. And it was seriously an app that i DID NOT download. And sometimes i think its maybe like a feature of another app, or if its a file shes looking at it may be a dependency of some sort...but more often than not i cant explain it..and that doesnt ever end well.
Im seriously at the end of my patience..i love her to death, but i cant keep fighting with her day after day over such DUMB ****, especially when i didnt do a single thing shes accusing me of.
Sorry this is so long. But i guess my questions are:
1. How can i better identify the source of an app/file/program, so she can see that I didnt download it from some random source trying to be sneaky.
2. How can I explain various apps or programs in my phone (some have had icons, and others havent.. and the ones without have only madae her feel like im trying to hide it from her) that i didnt put there, and show her what they are, what they're for, or how they got there?
3. Is there a way to PROVE that i dont download apps from other places other than Google Play Store and LG's store thingy? Please...I think this is by far the most crucial question.
Thank you to anyone who bothered reading all of this. And thank you to anyone who takes the time to help me with this. This whole thing is crazy, and honestly heart breaking. Its the worst feeling in the world to be so adamantly called a liar when in fact you've done nothing of the things you're being accused of.
solution to your troubles should be:
I love you and I trust you, and you do the same.
so don't spy at my phone like I don't do the same to yours.
you don't know how/why some apps that you have installed haven't been downloaded from google play store, but you don't give a fluck? good choice. she should never have seen those stuff on your device, it's nothing that matters to her.
if she forces you do give an answer, it may be because she lacks of trust in you. or worse.. she'll do [she's doing?] to you what she accuses you to do to her.
This isnt normal man. I'm 38 and dated many girls. This is kinda extreme. If she goes crazy at apps that might be side loaded vs from Google than what else will she flip out about. An hour late from traffic, had to work overtime and so on.
@deadman.zr0day, your post sounds like a letter that should be sent to Dear Amy and not a technical forum. Your relationship needs more help than just dealing with your phone.
As far as your phone, have you considered adding or changing your pin code, using face lock or, a finger print so that your girlfriend can't just open your phone any time she feels like it?
lol strange story. you can date with everyone
Sounds like your girlfriend has been hacked and somebody is tapping that. They been running all kinds of deep root kits in her and now the virus in her mind has her thinking her malicious activity is about to be exposed. Get out while you can guy. End the end its always about your financial information(&self worth). get out now.

The question to ask her is, why is of such a great concern?
I don't think you can really prove that you aren't downloading apps from unknown sources. You can show her that the option to download from Unknown sources is not checked, but there are many system files and apps that run as processes that keep the OS stable, similar to a desktop operating system. I'm sure you know that that when you check on one of those apps that don't have an icon you get a message that says that it may cause the device to malfunction, become unstable or may cause other apps to stop functioning. As comical as your post is, cyber security and relationship fidelity are serious issues. I'd like to know what transpires from all of this. I hope you keep us posted.
Everything will be fine with a few bottles of wine! Cheers

To answer your three questions:
In settings, Apps, App Info, you can click an app and under App details, it will show where the app came from.
Most system apps don't have icons. You can tell you didn't put them there because you won't be able to uninstall them.
You would have to go through each one to see where it came from using the info from Question 1.
Now that that's out of the way, RUN!! Run away like your life depended on it. I don't like talking bad about another man's girl, but she crazy!
(Apparently crazy girlfriend was just doing a Youtube parody, who knew!)

Oh boy. Your story can be a best-selling netflix movie!
Why don't you try a tracking app on your both devices so that anyone of you gives (and receives) all the phone activities to (from) the other?
Ooops, this needs mutual trust which is not the case... Sorry
Honestly, I'm reluctant to give any technical advice that would enable her behavior. Her behavior is a HUGE red flag and can often act as a precursor for greater abuse. You should talk to her about respecting privacy and the importance of trust in the relationship. Perhaps this article will help: Don't Use Software To Spy On Your Spouse.
If, for some reason, you feel the need to indulge her paranoia, you could do a few things:
Open up Google Play Store. Go to My Apps. If, indeed, you're only installed apps from the Play Store, then they will be listed there. One thing to note: they're listed in a bizarre order. It's not quite chronological and not alphabetical, so you'll have to really scroll through that list to find it. Also note: This lists EVERY app you've ever downloaded, not just the ones currently on your phone.
If it's essential to her that you prove your innocence (and again, from your account it sounds as though she is being WAY over-the-top about this) then perhaps she's benefit from some of the info here: How To Tell If Your Partner Is Spying On You
Again: Her behavior demonstrates a huge lack of trust in you and your relationship, and should be seen as a big bright red flag.
I think that the best solution for this problem is to forget about a smartphone and buy a phone with buttons without any google and apple stores. Or you can tell your girl that if you want to spy on her phone you must install some apps on her phone as I've read here https://celltrackingapps.com/spy-on-girlfriends-text-messages-free/. If you have so many problems that is based on such simple things, why do you live together. I think that this story must be solved right now because this psychosis will grow in the future.
Dude, I would break up with her instantly. LMAO, she will tell me which apps to install and which services to use. F that. She knows nothing about phones. I've been flashin' custom ROMs since 2014 while she used daddy's iPhones. Jesus Christ.
I imagined that I was in your situation, added a bit of spice to it xD. No offense to you and your gf.
Ditch her, fast. Jealousy only gets worse.
