Any Custom ROMs able to rival Touchwiz features? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have my eye on the Note 4 but I still don't like Touchwiz and prefer to run Android 5 or Cyanogen when it becomes available. I'm afraid I'll lose a lot of the features you'd only get through Touchwiz such as:
1) Fingerprint reader
2) S Pen functionality and apps
3) Use of the health sensors
For those of you who had a Note 3 and ran on custom ROMs did you miss any of the features above?

You forgot "no wifi calling", "no ir remote not working", "very inferior camera/camcorder",
"most of the smart features don't work" and many other features/options don't work or
inferior compared to Touchwiz roms.

Two of the things you are asking about are embedded in touchwiz framework, and the other one, spen...I wont really call it spen functionality but there are apps you can use with your spen (like any other stylus can). Those same can be used on touchwiz.
Hope that answers your question!

The IR blaster still works, you just need a 3'rd party app. (At least if its anything like my Galaxy S5). I hated Samsung's app for the IR blaster so I downloaded another one. To answer OP's question, its a drivers issue. That being said, there are some GREAT touchwiz based roms for my S5 that have stripped down bloatware and replaced the launcher. You can still get a great experience with touchwiz features, as long as you are willing to do some tweaking. In my experience, the Samsung phones get the most custom roms of any devices.

Wow. It's worse than I thought. I guess the best option to have the best of both worlds is just keep Touchwiz and get a different launcher if I want to change up the home screen.
Problem with that is, it will still be Touchwiz underneath..

Exactly. I never understood the reasoning for putting that crap CM on a Note device - especially the 4. What's the point? Buy a Nexus or some other inferior device.

What's the point. Either you like TW or you don't. I run Nova Prime on my Note 4 simply because I want more screen real estate. I prefer the underlying features of TW to any other launcher out and would prefer ANYTHING to stock Android or CM.

Aren't there custom TW roms that have little lag? I seen a Note 3 one, that's the only problem with TW in my opinion

1. To wait for AOSP and actually use this beastly processor
2. Because we waited for the Nexus 6 and it was never announced, until 1 day after the Note 4 came home with me.
I love your Minions Rom, had it on my note 3 for a long while .

Yes, that's the best idea, just get a good launcher from the play store.
I use the Next Launcher 3D, most people don't want to shell out $15
for a launcher but I did and found it to be excellent.
But there are plenty of free and almost free launchers that you can
download/install from the play store and many of them are very good.
(all of them a lot better than any touchwiz launcher)
Good luck!

I remember the G1. That phone lagged. And by lag I mean press the Contacts icon and 5 seconds later it starts to open.
I wouldn't call what TW does lag. I'd call it at most at half a hiccup.

Perhaps some people will need to setup a "dual boot" system,
one being touchwiz and the other for cm/aosp. LOL

Yea I guess i do mean s4. Boy it's been a while haha.

What you want is a looks customizable, slimmed down and streamlined stable touchwiz based Rom... plenty will be made with the line up of promised developers. Be patient.
You take away touchwiz, you take away note specific features. They are irreversibly intertwined. Personally I love a debloated and tweaked touchwiz rom... but on the Note 4 I don't even see the need yet on stock touchwiz with bloatware "disabled", if you don't like the looks, get a launcher/customizable home.

I have a nexus 7 and stock Android bores me. I actually like Touchwiz and the "vomit inducing colors", that some people complain so much about.
I have no need to rom my S4.

I tend to agree mostly because I enjoy having the option. TW has really stepped it up since the Gingerbread version that came stock on the S2. I tend to go back and forth between TW and AOSP. A great option.
The Nexus 7 is a great device. I run JellyBeer because I like tabletui on my tablet. I tend to do less modding now on that device because I play a ton of games on it. I'd rather it just be stable.
I will say this I brought a TW device because I like TW. People buy a TW device and complain about TW I'm like why not just buy a pure Google device instead of flashing a rom to get that pure Google experience.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
It's great we have options. I say whatever floats your boat. But like E, I bought a TW device because I wanted one. My wife had an S3 and I had HTC's. I did all the techie stuff on her phone and grew to like the interface. It's a refreshing change for me being a long time Sense user. And I've been very pleased with it so far. But it's nice to know I can always switch if I get bored with TW.
The device itself, no. There will be near-perfect ports for the TW devices already out there. But if I had the choice of buying either of them at the same price, I'd go with the GPe. I don't use most of Samsung's pre-loaded features.

I've enjoyed the TW experience and why give up features for the pure android experience?
I came from HTC Sense and pure Android with all the roms I found for my Evo3d, so TW is new to me. I love TW! To me they all do the same crap. I do love all the settings, options and gadgets from TW so I prefer it for now. The only reason I tried non sense roms was for Jellybean and increase speed. With my S4 I don't need any more speed plus I love the funs stuff that came with the phone so I don't see myself installing a different rom unless its the next Android version. Whats the next Android version to come out? Apple Pie or something like that?
The only time I used an aosp rom for a long period was on my hero. I actually preferred sense over aosp and now I am really enjoying tw. I must admit I do notice some lag at times, but no more than any other phone I've had. Also, this is the longest I've ever gone without rooting a phone. I'm considering rooting now just to get rid of some of the bloat I never use.

I've always liked the dark aosp roms and paranoid android but this is the first touch wiz phone I've like the tw on because of the extra features.

If someone can get the tw camera ported, that would be sick.
Finally I find people that like touch wiz. As a fellow liker of tw it was sad being in a minority of one
Vanilla may be nice in some aspects, but it gets boring quick. I don't know what specifically, but there were things I couldn't do on vanilla that I could do on touchwiz. I don't know of any, off hand, that I couldn't do in tw but could in vanilla. I don't know if it is an issue now but it used to be that a Bluetooth program, or the emulator program, wouldn't work with a Nintendo controller if it had touchwiz. Haven't used it lately so I don't know if they fixed that. The Dev said that touchwiz wasn't compatible at the time. This was the time of the nexus s 4g.

Sprint doesn't have any pure Google devices.
I'm not a fan of the vomit inducing colors on asop. The lack of ability to customize the phone the way you want without having to resort to play store apps or asop roms is annoying. The horrible camera and phone app reminds me of pre froyo. Settings menu lacks the options to customize and requires too many "clicks" deep into menus to get what you want.

I regularly switch between TW & AOSP. I like them both for different reasons and I change as the mood suits me. I'll say this though - I waited longer to flash an AOSP rom on this phone than I have on any other phone in something like 2-3 years. And that covers a whole lot of phones. Samsung has done great things with TW and I'm legitimately baffled by all the hatred it gets.

I bought this phone for the hardware, and SUPER AMOLED, 5 inch screen. The extras mean nothing to me. I like the snappiness of AOSP/GE. Once you flash CM10.1, you cant' go back to TouchWiz. It just doesn't look right.
Until stock android gets better features, no. Google needs to come up with some cool features like LGs quick memo, floating apps, or video overlay, or Samsung's dual window mode, and pop out video. It's features like that, that actually enhance the android experience. App switching ≠ multitasking anymore. What's the point of all these quad core phones if we don't get use out of them?
Another main thing is google needs to stop giving CDMA users the cold shoulder. Even if Pure devices were worth it, they wouldn't be worth switching companies for.

Cyanogen/AOSP is pure android without all the unnecessary graphics, designs and bloat from Samsung.
Minimal design = stronger processor strength.
Plus, pure stock Android is just better.

Because Note devices have the top of the line and updated processors. In other words, fastest/strongest processors on the market at the time of release.
You will never see the full capacity of this processor until you're on Pure Android.

I agree with you. IMO (<- take note of that before anyone gets butt hurt.) I think "some" people don't realize how much TW has improved. It's pretty awesome on the Note 4 and for those who like TW can definitely tell how far it has come.
CM is boring and IMO it takes away from the Notes DNA of what makes a Note a Note. If I just cared about having the best piece of hardware with a big screen, I'd still want something pleasing to look at than a black and white movie.
Like I've said earlier....
...and it's nice to be able to drive a McLaren P1 and do the 1/4 mile in 9 seconds as oppose to driving a gutted Honda Civic fully modded with no interior w/ a welded roll cage and helment running 9's in the 1/4. Chicks dig luxury, performance and comfort..."
IMO for anyone wanting CM, they should just the Nexus 6 or an iphone LOL. The fact remains that the new TW is very efficient and there are enough customizations you can do with wanam/xpose to be able to enjoy all the benefits of CM or not, depending on your style and preference. I am confident to give CM a run for its money on AnTuTu along with other benchmarks, because the truth is, with TW already running 50K+ on stock kernel, anything above this wouldn't really be noticeable if at all. Heck even anything below that wouldn't really make a difference in the real world with normal usage. Therefore, although all this doesn't really matter, I think it'll be fun to explore the close race between TW and CM. I'm game for it....bring it on. There won't be a big enough gap to even make CM justifiable IMO. Plus, the girl will want to ride in my car, not the gutted honda civic. Be a gentleman, and treat her like a lady. LOL j/k.
At the end of the day, it's your phone and you can do whatever the heck your heart desires. :highfive:
Bottom line, just be happy to know that you own the best darn device available and enjoy!

I really want to try that Ron but I need Unlimited tethering so I don't think
That rom supports it
the great thing about Cyanogen for our phone will be that will open the doors for all sorts of AOSP roms; Cyanogen mod is a very stripped down version of AOSP, but there are fantastic AOSP roms out there, (SlimRom, ParaNoidAndroid,AOKP) are a few that come to mind, and, they come with mods and fixes that bring ALOT of the stuff you get on the stock TouchWiz roms, just with different software; and, regardless of what anyone says, NO touchwiz rom will be as light, swift, slick and fast as an AOSP rom.
I too would be curious to see how this phone would scream with an AOSP rom, and I'm sure it wont be long till a few of them start showing up; but, usually Cyanogen Mod will be the first one that gets ported for a newly released phone..

WiFi Tether Router, from the playstore works flawlessly.
I use it daily.
FireKatv3 is insane...
I've mentioned in another post where I would much rather use a 3rd party tethering app over a baked in one any day. More setting options....therefore, with me even if a ROM had it baked in, I wouldn't be using it anyway.

Yes it'll be screaming fast, no denying that. But unlike before where there was a huge gap between asop roms vs stock tw....from my crazy smooth experience so far with the newly refined TW (thanks to FireKatv3), that gap has closed a lot.
It's nice to finally be able to go fast and in luxury without sacrificing luxury for performance like before.
Most people buy the note for the note experience to enjoy the luxury that it offers while being equipped with a v12 monster.
IMO, Why buy a Bentley just to strip it of its luxury? Why not just downgrade and buy a Nexus 6? Answer? Because even in this scenerio the N4 is still better. Fair enough.
A stripped down Bently (asop) is obviously going to be faster than the one (stock) still having its hand stitched leather seats that does weigh a ton. But, thanks to a highly refined ROM like FireKatv3, that v12 beast is tuned to provide more power to balance out the power to weight ratio, while still being naturally aspirated. That's impressive.
All credit to Mega (the dev) of FireKatv3, but I'm pretty darn happy about my experience so far running on stock kernel and hitting 50k+. Now regardless of any opinions on benchmarks and real world experience, the fact remains that my real world experience is more than enough to justify my 50k+ bench score.
I've yet to see any other ROM do that.
So I'll see yall asop'ers at the drag strip and give you a run for the money. It'll be good fun. [emoji106]

Its subjective. We like the N6. S6 users probably prefer that. Get what you want, not what we tell you.

I've had Samsung phone since the vibrant came out. They are by their own right an excellent device if you can tolerate TW. Now I don't think I'll be going back.
IMO; go N6!!
I had the S4 and it has some feature that I do miss. The air gestures mostly.
I had an n6, switched to the s6, then a month later back to the n6.
The s6 was a solid phone, looks amazing and smooth as hell, my fav phone ive ever owned
But eventually i missed the big screen of the nexus and the bigger battery. I was charging the s6 about 2 times a day, and i got tired of it. Also i missed being able to customize my phone, but the stock s6 isnt bad at all so i didnt miss it too much.
Overall id say go with the n6 cause the battery life on the s6 will get annoying after a while.
Me personally i probably wouldve stayed on the s6 if they had a bigger battery.

What would it matter to you? It wouldn't / shouldn't change your view. If you want an S6, get it. Its a completely different phone. Generally people go for Nexus devices because they're the complete opposite of Samsung devices.
Make your own decision.

To be honest, I've looked through all the phones I could get that are the latest and greatest (Except iPhones) And I got stuck, N6 or S6? Some things are better on N6 some are better on S6 and thats why im stumped, Price DOES NOT matter to me because of my contact I have, but I really need to know what people perfer, as of now I think I want a N6 because I hate TouchWiz, but either way they'll both end up on some rom like CyanogenMod 12.1... I also dont really care for the look or feel because I'll be getting a case anywhere, so It really comes down to specs, battery life, software(on N6), and stuff like that,
Also: Is it true what N6 (and all Nexus's) get updates before the Samsungs?
Thanks for all the help! - Ket

Camera. S6 camera is so damn beautiful
And the design is sexxy
Also the screen is the best screen ive ever seen on any smartphone, and has better viewing in sunlight.
The s6 performs better stock as well. Gaming on the n6 for has been mediocre, but with a custom kernel that problem goes away. The s6 performs top notch out of the box, no customizing needed.

Ill answer this as well so i can get my post count up...lol
If you want cm12, n6 is best. Cm12 likely wont come for the s6 anytime soon, if ever because of the type of processor used.
And yes, n6 get updates before any other phone.
So it looks like you need an n6

Here's the deal here, Samsung put a blocker on many things the flashaholic loves..they have their Knox, warranty void when rooted, don't share sources for things like camera HAL, and if you're unlucky enough not get an exynos version, no sources for that either.
If custom AOSP roms is your thing, nexus hands down...
Other than that list which pros mean most to you and see which has the most.

Sounds to me like an easy decision, but only.you can make itm
I had S3, note 3 and note 4 until 2 weeks ago when I decided to give N6 a try. I love big screens and now can not go back to none stock android. It's just an Awsome experience.
Yes, S6 is a beautiful and great phone. But after having a 6 inch screen, any phone with screen less than 5.7 feels like a child's toy to me.

I apologise in advance for being pedantic, you're going to hate me
You can't say "none stock" as a comparison to other phones. Stock means unmodified as in, how it left the factory, shipped and is "in Stock". I think what you meant was "None vanilla". The Nexus 6 has Vanilla Android as stock. But All phones have a "stock" OS, whether it is vanilla or otherwise. Touchwiz is Stock on a Samsung. You can install Vanilla too (AOSP).
I know it's only a minor inaccuracy and I'm being pedantic by bringing it up, but since people quite regularly confuse Vanilla and Stock as synonyms, it does confuse noobs here when different people mean different things when they say stock - so it's best to use it correctly
So yeah, The official ROM for every phone is a Stock ROM. Custom ROMs can either be based on the stock ROM for that phone or on AOSP, which would be a Vanilla Android ROM.
(Sorry)

No worries. I completely agree with you on Stock vs Vanilla. I stand corrected. So, yes, I am loving "vanilla" android and nexus 6 is a great hardware to complement that.

Aosp Roms

Hey guys. I searched for some answers but came up empty handed. My question is how come we don't have any aosp Roms yet? Are there any in the works? Is there something particular holding back their development? Just got my note 5 recently and trying to catch up on the development here.

Sadly this is why : http://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-exynos-and-aosp-explained-a-story-of-betrayal/
Even if Samsung opens up it's too late as many of the talented people have long gone. Also with Samsung making TW less bloaty (With built in theme support) and Xposed you really don't need a AOSP rom much anymore.
Thanks for sharing. That's a bummer I looked but didn't come up on that article. I just prefer an aosp rom option. I usually nand my favorite tw and favorite aosp Roms to switch up when I'm bored

The only downside to the Note 5 imho is the ****ty multi tasking/ram issue. I've tried all the build.prop and kernel fixes but non of them seem to work for me. I usually have more than 6 apps running in the background like titanium backup, cool tools, dreamlab, daemon sync,Google Photos and a bunch of other stuff that I NEED and the damn Note 5 keeps on killing them proccesses. I know it's certainly TW doing it as I have the exact same apps running on my LG G Pro 2 and it doesn't randomly kill tasks.
Anyhoo that's just my rant on the only thing I hate about this device, Otherwise I actually like it a lot.
I wish it was that easy. I used my two Jumps this year, first on the g4 which I hated and the second on this. I don't have another till july. But I am thoroughly happy with this phone just wish I had the option to use aosp as it is updated and waiting for Samsung to update is pain staking.

I don't have this issue or I guess it doesn't affect me for what I use my phone for. Not sure

Maybe I'm just a hardcore user as I notice most people don't have their phones as customized and set up as mine. I'm guessing Samsung has optimized the S6/Note5 for 99% of the other normal users who don't multitask much.
download a kernel and lower the lmk

Samsung rom on Nexus 6

Okey guys, please dont kill me for this question, I already know that im going straight to hell for this.
Since this week im a (sometimes) happy nexus 6 owner. Before N6 i had S5, S6 and Note 3. Now i cant get used to the stock rom, it is not made for me and im missing some Samsungcrap like making a folder inside app drawer, seeing on what type of data connection im online, having some lag and out of nowhere reboots, be able to modify haptic feedback sentivity, ****-up knox, be able to reset all recent used apps and other ****ty stuff.
Now i like the hardware of the N6 like the bigass display, stereo speakers, cpu und ze fast charging time.
Oh yeah, back to my question aka TL;DR:
Is there, somewhere in the forbidden dark place of the internet, a Samsung rom for the Nexus 6?
Thank you in advance
Edit: I know that there are some apps that can help me out but i dont want to have tons of apps. I just want to know if there is a Samsung rom.
no, and there wont be.

You should be able to find an installable Touchwiz launcher that will work on the Nexus 6. That's about is close as you'll get. Haptic feedback adjustment is a kernel feature AFAIK, I know most of the ones I have used had that available in Kernel Adiuter under misc controls.
Based on what you say you want, a Samsung Galaxy Note is for you. The Nexus 6 is designed for a pure experience --if that isn't what you want, you should sell it and buy what gives you the things you like about the Nexus (the size) with the interface of the Samsung.
With no disrespect, the Samsung experience is the complete antithesis of why people buy a Nexus. As people buy a Nexus to get away from Samsung's TouchWiz, HTC's Sense, and all of these other overlays, you're just not going to find that sort of thing.

The settings you said are more or less in cyanogenmod, and you can always use a TW launcher. If it's not enough, then you really should by a Samsung phone.
I was a Samsung user for years, I don't have anything really against TW, I never complained about the lag. When the warranty period was over for my Note 3, I've installed cyanogenmod, and never went back. Now I'm running my own pure AOSP rom, experimenting with ideas for modification.
So if you give it some time, you might even get to love the pure Android feeling. But some people can't and there's no shame in going back. The Note 4 n910F has basically the same hardware, the same resolution and almost as big a screen.
