[Q] Which Moto X version do I have? - Moto X Q&A

Hey all,
I've searched high and low, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to determine which Moto X version I purchased on Amazon. Here's a screenshot of my about phone page:

You have the XT1053 - either the T-Mobile (GSM unlocked) variant, or the GSM Developer edition.
If you look on the back near the bottom, you should see "XT1053" in very small letters. Might need a magnifying glass to make it out.

Wow, yup, you're right. That is very hard to make out! It did come unlocked, but was not listed as the Developer Edition. Is there an easy way to tell if I have the Developer edition?

Sounds like the Dev Edition comes with a black front and should say it on the back as well, so mine must just be the T-Mobile version.

The Developer edition ONLY comes with a black front and white back.
If yours isn't that color, it isn't the DEV edition. No worries though....they are EXACTLY the same device. Only difference: While both can have their bootloaders unlocked for free via Moto's website, only the DEV edition retains its warranty after being unlocked.

Bootloader Unlock Supported on Verizon?

So, for kicks, I wondered on to the Moto X bootloader unlock page and noticed that VZW was listed as a supported device for unlocking... is that true? Did I miss something? Is it only us poor saps on AT&T that can't unlock???

That is only the Dev Edition for Verizon. The Dev Edition isn't listed as AT&T because it is a GSM version that can be used on any network the uses GSM and the Verizon is CDMA and is used only on the Verizon network.

I believe you. However, there is no * or footnote, notating that unlock works only on the VZW Dev Edition. I am at work and cannot install all those goodies on my work puter, or else I'd be trying just to be trying...
Maybe what I'm saying - can you show the source that says Dev Edition only?
Again, not trolling here, just want to be sure.

A simple Google search would yield the proof you are looking for, but here are several links stating that AT&T and Verizon will not be unlocking the bootloaders for their Moto X variants, but will be offering Dev Editions instead.

Not just their Moto X but all phones. I don't get why people are still surprised or still complain when AT&T or Verizon branded phones don't allow bootloader unlocking, they have made their stance on the issue abundantly clear.

Er, I heard the Rogers version doesn't support AWS, is that true? The whole point of the Dev Edition to me is the lack of branding and pentaband 3G/HSPA as I will be on Wind Mobile (no LTE available). So I kinda of DO need the Dev Edition.

The Rogers version does support AWS with LTE, but not HSPA(which is what you want for Wind) You need the dev edition or tmobile/retail edition if you want to use it with Wind.

Hi! Sorry for digging up an old thread but I'd like to know If you ended up purchasing the developer edition and if it truly is compatible with Wind Mobile. I'm currently in the same situation you were and I can't believe how much confusion there is over the different variants of Moto X available. All the data I've seen suggests the T-mobile and GSM Developer Edition are essentially the same phones with the same pentaband support but every social board I've come across has someone claiming they are not. I trusted my research however and recently jumped on an opportunity to purchase a brand new unopened Developer Edition Moto X for a great deal off ebay only to come across yet another contradicting post but this time on a Canadian board with respect to Wind specifically and now I'm very worried. Can you please confirm the Moto X GSM Developer Edition's compatibility with Wind Mobile?
Thanks
Also, FYI the model number on the box reads 00337NADEV which is what's listed on Motorola's specs sheet for AT&T/T-mobile's GSM Developer Edition while the FCC ID is IHDT56PA2 which corresponds to the XT1053 variant so hopefully everything works out (fingers crossed)

Yes I did, and yes it is! I've had it (XT1053 GSM Dev Edition) for 7 months now, and I use Wind data daily. It works very well. I can even get data at certain spots in the subway (near entrances and at above-ground stations).

I know what you mean. I was in the same situation 7 months ago and I probably even read that same board. I bet that whoever said data didn't work forgot to configure the APN settings. I was without data for almost the entire first day with my X until I realized I had to input the APN settings myself.
I can't confirm or deny the numbers on the box (I lost the box), but it sounds like you did your research well. Unless the eBay seller was deliberately lying to you, you should be good. Congrats on your purchase and don't forget to get a nano SIM! (I got mine for $10 from a Wind retailer.)
Sorry, can't help. Ended up buying Nexus 5. I wish I was in Wind's service area but am not so never looked into that.

That's great news! Thanks I'll be sure to check the APN settings also. Hopefully this thread clears up the situation for anyone else. I've been eyeing this device for a long time very excited to finally have one. How are the data speeds on Wind? I read they just recently finished upgrading all their towers to the HSPA+ standard and are now working on rolling out dual carrier HSPA+ also . Will be interesting to see how it fairs against Rogers 3G network once I get the phone and how well the Moto X's antenna can pick up Wind's signals

Bummer. The nexus 5 seems like a great device though was seriously considering it but touchless control and active display features of the moto x won me over.
Don't expect LTE speeds obviously, but they are fast enough for everything I do and I never worry about speeds. That includes streaming YouTube and music on my commute.
Anyway, i just did 5 speed tests standing in the same spot. The server was a bigger factor than the network I found. From top to bottom: Start, Teksavvy, Vmedia, Zero fail, Zero fail. All servers were listed as 14km away in "Toronto". I'm pretty sure this app is just computing the distance to downtown and not the actual server...

Have they specifically said its not allowed or have they just not added them to the unlockable database yet? I was told it can take some time for them to add them to the database. Also, the unlocking website had problems yesterday and wouldn't unlock any phones period.

The Motorola website says its supported so I'd post on the official Motorola forum and ask for them to look into it.
I just got my motomaker T-Mobile device and I can't unlock the bootloader. That is the only reason I bought the t-mobile version. I think motorola wants us to be stuck with the stupid black and white device.
Ok I thought it was just me but after reading this thread I know it's not. I just got my motomaker tmobile moto x today and no dice on the bootloader unlock. Got on the phone with Motorola support and they are clueless when it comes to the bootloader. I don't get what the difference would be between a colored one and black/white one that would cause any sort of differentiation on the bootloaders.

They will likely be in two different categories so I'm thinking they just haven't got around to confirming that but I would like to find out before the end of my return window. Support does seem pretty clueless.
different model number?
Can anyone confirm the model number for the T-Mobile MotoMaker version and the Dev Edition version? I thought they were one and the same which is why I went with the MotoMaker version...
T-mobile before motomaker was XT1053 - same as dev edition - and had unlockable bootloader. Is it different now?
Reading the forums at the motorola website it appears the they need to enter each phone into the system manually. I hope it is only a matter of a few days and then I can unlock.

If you haven't done so already, go post on the Motorola forums.
I, for one, will be returning my T-Mobile Moto Maker if I can't unlock the bootloader by the time my return period is up.

[Q] T-Mobile Moto X: can I use it on any GSM carrier?

Hi there!
I am looking to get a Moto X to be used with any GSM carrier in the US and Europe.
(I don't want to root it)
Do I need to buy the Developer Edition or can I also get the No-Contract T-Mobile one (customizable via motomaker)?
Thanks in advance!
The T-mobile is unlocked and good to go, no need to buy the developer edition.

Are you absolutely sure about this? Do you know it for a fact, or have you just read it somewhere?
I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?

I can't verify whether it's SIM locked or not but I have one in my hand and the T-Mobile XT1053 does not have any branding on it. There is no logo on it. There are no T-Mo apps on it either.
It's unlocked. Using it with prepaid at&t.

[Q] T-Mobile GSM Version on ATT

I assume the T-Mobile GSM version is fully compatible with ATT - ie I'll get full speeds for LTE?
It appears to be the same as the developer edition except you get to use Moto Maker (and its not unlocked).
Considering getting back into the Moto X with the sale on the 27th.

I am using the T-Mobile Moto X on AT&T and it works fine.
The only thing is you are missing one of the LTE Bands (Band 5) that AT&T might use, however in my area they aren't using it.
Thanks. I found another thread after I posted that had a fairly lengthy discussion. What I got from that thread was the T-Mobile and Dev Edition are essentially the exact same phone, the software may also be exactly the same. It appears the bootloader can be unlocked. The plus of getting the T-Mobile version is the Moto Maker. The minus seems to be any warranty issues from unlocking the bootloader.

Slightly relevant question: The At&t variant has the At&t logo and the FCC info printed on the bottom back of the phone, but what does the GSM/T-Mobile version have printed?
