4 Hour Cut Off - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
So i have the note 4 and my gf and i like to fall sleep but after 4 hour the call cuts out is there a way to override this i have rooted my device etc. Were getting her a new Samsung s5 any ideas thanks guys.

I think the first thing I would try is using an app to keep the screen on on both phones and have both phones plugged in. And, definitely no power saver mode or battery saver apps.

Ah, the 4 hour phone calls. I remember those days... Weren't no such thing as a cellphone back then. If I'm on the phone more than 5 minutes these days, there's something wrong!
I believe this is a network feature and if it can be overridden, the carrier would have to do it

^^^^ exactly the way I feel haha

Damn 4hrs at one time to the same person.

Fair use policy?

I remember those days! 8 hour phone calls seemed like minutes!!

I would try google voice and use a google voice number maybe that will keep u on

I haven't been able to find anything official on T-Mobile's site, but you'll see people on other phones (iPhones, Blackberry, etc...) complaining about the 4 hour limit. It's not a device issue, and there's no "block" on your account, it's just the way T-Mobile's network works.
The only thing I can recommend (apart from switching carriers, obviously) is a Hangouts voice call. If you both have Hangouts installed on your phone you can initiate a voice call and have no time limit. Just make sure you're on WiFi (or an unlimited data plan) since it uses data, not minutes.

2 Gig data plan questions

I am coming from Sprint and unlimited data so I have no idea how often I actually went over 2 GB. How easy is it to do with no tethering, but I do plan on using Pandora in my car. Should I use wifi when It is available to alleviate some of the use? Never had to pay attention to data use before.
I can only reference my iphone 3gs data usage answering your question, because I haven't been on and checked mine recently, but I would say definitely use wifi when available (why not? Its super fast!) and about the data usage thing, when I had my iphone in never used wifi and there was only one time I went over 2gigs worth of data in the year I had it, and after heavy usage 24/7. And in can't recount why I did go over either... I would say u really don't have much to worry about unless you tether, thats a whole different ball game i could be wrong though.

Even when AT&T had unlimited data there was a 5gig softcap that would raise suspicions if you went over it....that being said, for nearly a year I used my Blackberry as my sole internet connection on my home desktop (and played Warcraft online constantly) and never went over 5 gigs. I use wifi at home now and I stay well under 2 gigs easily, and I watch YouTube videos and so forth on a regular basis. Just install netcounter from the market and monitor your usage from the beginning of your billing cycle and you'll be surprised at how far 2 gigs will go.

Thanks
Y'all are all so helpful just like the folks over on the XDA Hero CDMA section.
I will say that it's fairly easy to go over 2 gigs...especially if your using Pandora..Which the 2 other posters failed to mention.
I had my Omnia(Verizon) tethered and used in excess of 65 Gigs a billing cycle. And Verizon never complained..lol
Anyway, depending on how much of Pandora you use, the 2 gigs can go rather quick. It's shady that AT&T did that but there gonna do what they want. I'm currently on the 2 gig data trap with 3 lines(BB/G1/Captivate) and I use almost 2 gigs per line(except my not here yet Captivate) and thats with using wifi at work, home, and at my parents, and I still use a crap load of data.
If you don't HAVE to go to AT&T, I'd stay with Sprint..lol..Just my suggestion.
Hope everything works out.
~SMurf
Using the dialer, type in *DATA# and call it. You'll get a text message saying how much data you've used, and when the next bill starts. Do some simple math, and prorate what you've used over a 30 day period, and see where you stand.
At first I was worried about data, but I did that and I wasn't going to even break 1GB. Since then I haven't even thought about it. Currently at ~500 MB with two weeks left on my billing cycle.
I guess it depends also a lot on how much you are on wifi , if you have wifi at home and/or work, i dont think you are going to ever hit the 2 gb cap.
Yea I'm at 183 mb and have 3 days left on my billing cycle. And don't get it twisted, that's from listening to alot of pandora in the car. Notice that guy said "tethered," keyword there. I wonder how much data pandora uses in the monthly 40 hour cap your allowed.

If you stream a lot of 3G it is easy to go over, especially video.
Go to att.com/myandroid to check data usage. Also, 3G Watchdog app will keep track of your data usage.
That said, my friend had his iPhone 4 for a couple months and uses it quite a bit at work (always switches on wifi at home) and he never even passed 1GB.
I used 7gb of data last month on my captivate, (unlimited data ftw).
But damn bro, would you have waited a little longer, you could have gotten the EPIC XD
Well, presumably he could return his phone and retun to Sprint for the Epic 4g (Sprint's Galaxy S variant on the off chance you don't know), so long as he's in his 30 day return window. If I wasn't grandfathered in on unlimited, I probably would have held out and jumped ship to Sprint when the Epic lands.
Looking at my current data usage in the AT&T app, I will probably hit 1GB this month. I don't think I've done more than 3 hours of streaming radio, but I just flash JH2 and re-install all my apps over 3G, plus I installed the Asphalt 5 demo which includes a separate in-game 102mb data install, so that would explain my usage. I could see occasionally hitting 2GB, though I'm having trouble imaging how you would hit 7gigs in a month unless you were downloading/streaming several podcasts over 3G. I think my podcasts are 150-200mb daily, so I suppose it's possible. But it would be much faster to use wi-fi, so eh...

10 dollars more a month for the same ****ty CDMA coverage, no thanks. There isn't any 4G here.

[Q] Is my phone really defective

im gonna take my thrill back today and get a new one! I am having trouble with the battery as many people are but I dont know if it is worse than others. I unhooked it a few minutes ago and it went from 99 percent down to 90 in about 3-4 minutes and down to 80 in another 10 minutes and im not even sure what is running in the background because I thought I had an app killer installed. anyway the other problem is that I cannot get an internet connection at all unless I am on wifi. I have unlimited data and should be able to use programs like facebook even at the university but I cannot. Does anyone think I am doing the right thing by returning the phone? sorry about the long rant
Sounds like you have a bad battery. When I first got my Nexus S I had the same problem replaced that battery through att and it has been fine ever since. Also I have noticed that some task killers cant remember witch ones in specific hurt battery life. I would take it back for a new one may as well replace the whole device if you can.

The data thing definitely sounds like a bug. The battery on the other hand is normal on some new Thrills. After a week or so it should settle in and battery life gets better over time.

Yeah, if you first got the phone it takes a few cycles before battery starts to improve. But it seems pretty bad, i would return it since you have the oppurtunity.

Thank you for the replies, I have had this phone for about 3 weeks and I keep it plugged in at night through usb but I also have to connect it for a few hours in the daytime as well. I havent had a chance to return it but I may do so today although the wifi issue seems to be working now. maybe the At&t Network was down?

A note on the battery issue? What's the signal strength like where you live? The data signal in my house is so bad that if I forget to turn wifi on after getting home from work my battery will drain close to 40% over night. My wife's Captivate does the same thing. If the signal is weak the phone will constantly poll for a stronger signal.
All that aside I would definitely still take advantage and seek a replacement while its free. If you still have issues atleadt you'll know its something correctable and not the phone.

Question about reception

I recently (last week) got the HTC One coming from the HTC LTE and notice that it seems like every few minutes I lose network connectivity. More specifically when listening to streaming music. Even if the phone is stationary and doesn't matter what part of town (Kansas City), that I have where the music stops and buffers. Also had dropped a call on a road that I never had issues with phone calls before.
The phone was rooted, and took it to the Sprint store and they told me that the towers in town were all flaky (bad thing to say about their network), and that they didn't have a method of testing the radio. That night that I took it to the Sprint store, the girlfriend tried to call me and didn't receive the call and she sent me 3 texts that actually showed up while the CSR was holding the phone, showing that it was delayed by 2 hours. They did a profile update (think honestly they just wanted me out the door).
So I used the RUU to flash back to 100% stock once I got home to ensure it wasn't something that I did rooting the phone. Having done that, over the last few days still having the network buffering issues (didn't have that with my old phone), and haven't had any delayed texts (that I know of).
Question is do you believe them at the store that it is a wide are Sprint tower issue, or that it could be my phone? Don't want to wait too long, and end up with a refurbished one either (someone else's problem phone). Is anyone else having the same type of issues that might be able to be fixed with a software flash????
Thanks in advance!
I know lately I've been having dropped calls a lot. Two tonight actually with decent signal. Idk if it's my replacement phone or a rom I flashed.
Sort of tough to figure out which it could be.

Tried my girlfriends phone using Tune-In listening to the same channel and her phone does the same thing. She also have the HTC One. Just wonder if power management is just too tight and not enough processor to keep the stream going. Full bars in a 4G area and still buffers. Even when sitting still in my house!
Just very frustrating!
Mine was doing it too. Dial ##72786# and reset network settings. The phone will reboot and go through the hands free activation... After that I have not had any issues... FYI, I'm actually a tech at a corporate sprint store, and I'm surprised by how many reps don't know that ##code. The network being flaky is a real thing because of network vision upgrades taking large sections of our footprint offline for upgrades, although I can understand that it hardly instills confidence in our customers... However it is not a catch all for what could be a hardware issue.

I've had similar issues in Overland Park and Lenexa lately. I did the reset mentioned above and it helped somewhat. About the same time my wife began having issues with her iPhone 5 so I think there is a network component as well.

Well, still having the issue after driving to Wisconsin. Dropped streaming music, and while using GPS app, get lost and now in coverage area messages. Made the trip many times before and honestly NEVER have had an area where I lost service.
Decided to not take no for an answer and took my phone to the local corporate Sprint store and the lady said well, nothing we can do about it. I said nothing? She said that they don't have LTE here and now way of truly testing the phone. I asked there was no other test that they could run?
She responded that they could run some really basic tests but it probably wouldn't show up (i.e. she wanted me to go away and not waste their time testing the phone). But stuck to my guns and left it with them for an hour.
When I returned, she made sure that she was the one that there to tell me the results, which according to her that the phone "once" failed a particular test, kind of hinting that it passed it other times.
She said that the phone should be in today, coming via UPS. I told her that that if it wasn't in today that I wouldn't' be in the area due to leaving for another part of the state then heading back to the KC area (this was last Monday) and they didn't have the HTC One in stock which she said no, they didn't carry it.
Then as I was leaving she asked if I was get a survey call, if I would rate my visit with them as a 4...
Going to throw a fit if they give me a refurbished phone since I have had the phone less than a month and had problems from day one.
Data Loss During 3G/4G Change
I experience the same thing in the Minneapolis St. Paul area. I drive a lot for work and as I'm driving and the phone switches between towers I loose data connectivity completely for 30-40-60 seconds, sometimes more. I can sit there and watch the 3G/4G indicator go from lit up to dark during the switchover. It's really frustrating if you're using a data app like music streaming. I initially thought it was only happening when switching between 3G and 4G towers, but lately I've noticed it also happens between 3G towers, although 3G/4G is definitely worse.
I hope this is not a phone issue and is only a temporary tower upgrade issue.
Do you have EVDO enabled?
*#*#4636*# I think. Then change the data preferences.

I work in Minnetonka and experience the same issues while stationary! I'll be sitting and poof signal lost, haven't moved an inch.
Unfortunately I've only picked up 4G while driving, but I will try repeating your results on my next drive to work.
In general it seems like this phone doesn't receive the best signal.

Interesting. We have a 4G tower near us in Shorewood. I think the tower is around Hwy 5 and Powers Blvd in Chanhassen. Once I lock into the 4G tower I'm fine - it doesn't drop data, but it always drops it when switching between 3G and 4G. Last night I was driving to Jordan for a meeting and watched it all the way down. Not bad switching from 3G to 3G towers, but as soon as I hit the 4G tower signal in Jordan I lost signal. After watching it closer I noticed that the data indicator sometimes goes away completely on the phone, and when that happens it's like a minute or two before it restarts.
I'm going to put in a request for technical assistance from Sprint and see what they have to say about it. Maybe this is just the way the system and phone works since 3G and 4G are so different, but I sure hope not. It's annoying.

Any problems?

Mine was up and running for about an hour and the screen shut off while typing out a text and plugged in. Can't get it to respond to anything now. Plus the camera lens on the back was getting pretty warm when it charges now.

Took mine into the local AT&T store and was told that they weren't going to have any in stock until tomorrow. Seems odd as they go on sale tomorrow, but whatever. What pissed me off was when they said that they couldn't hold one for me and that it would be on a first come, first served basis. I pre-ordered the damn thing a month ago. Pretty sure I am first. After expressing that he said he would give my name to his manager to "try" and hold one. The store is going to have a pretty loud mess on their hands if i can't get my hands on one.

facing same issue camera lens on back getting warm even when not on charge. For some operations getting blank screen as if it is not responding but so far so good.
Completely drained battery and recharged to 100% it took exactly 2 hours.

Then they simply call the police to escort you out the store. Trust me, we've done it plenty of times before. Customer service is the only department that conforms to demands when someone is yelling at them. In store, we say we're gonna get the manager and happily walk to the back and call the police. Then we come back out right as the police show up so we can wave goodbye. And its first come first serve. Placing a pre-order a month ago doesn't give you priority in-store. Just fyi.

I wont yell and scream. I have a little more class and sophistication than that. I will however chew ass into a manager of what I perceive as a bad business practices. If at&t can't take of customers that have already given them money for a product that is defective, then I have an issue.
If its a warranty claim within 14 days (which it obviously is) then they should replace in store just bring the original box and everything in it so they have no excuse.

Who else here is on Republic Wireless?

I'm curious how many of my fellow XDA members have the Moto X on Republic Wireless?
I've been on Republic Wireless for about 3 weeks now on the $10/month plan (talk and text on cell, data on wifi only) and so far it works great for my situation. My typical day is spent at the office on wifi and then at home on wifi. I actually think the wifi calling voice quality is better than the cell voice quality. I was hesitant to be on the sprint network, but so far coverage has been great. We'll see how it is when I travel. One thing I did discover today is that the google maps navigation works if you start on wifi and then leave wifi coverage, even with no data connection it will continue to work. I am happy about this because I thought the navigation was one thing I was giving up by running on the $10/month plan. I've also discovered that if you absolutely need a data connection when you are out and about you can often find a wifi hotspot at many restaurants, stores, etc which has been convenient.
I came from a Nexus 5 on a monthly unlimited plan at net10 paying $45/month so my expectation going into this was that it would not be worth an extra $35/month savings to lose cell data, and honestly I figured I would send the phone back, but I've since sold my Nexus 5 and am sticking with Republic.
Cons:
MMS currently only works when sending to Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-mobile (can't send or receive to my wife's phone on Net10)
MMS doesn't work from the new hangouts messaging app, have to send and receive from the old stock messaging app
Android 4.3 instead of 4.4- and I assume they will always be a few months behind on updating to new versions of android since they have to modify the rom to make it work with their system
installing custom ROMs is still highly experimental
Pros:
$10/month for a smartphone- you can't beat that!
Root and Xposed Framework compatible
Wifi calling in places where you might normally have poor cell reception
Ability to switch between the different plans 2x per month and they pro-rate your bill for the days you are on a more expensive plan
Helps keep me off my phone when I'm out with my family
Helps keep me off my phone when I am driving
Referral program- refer your friends and they save $19 on their first month and you save $19 on your bill. Here's my link http://referrals.republicwireless.com/a/clk/25Tx5j
If you are using Republic what are you liking/not liking about the service? How long have you been on it? Tips or pointers you might have?
Don't worry about the sprint network. Republic phones can roam on verizon networks. That is the only reason I purchased one for my wife. She is on the 10 buck plan which is about 12.75 a month with taxes. Sprint data speeds are horrible here and I could never go back to phone as small as the moto x unless they stop making larger phones . However, the moto x is a very very nice phone.
I don't like the locked bootloader and the gsm bands are locked and cannot be unlocked. However, I guess republic has to protect their investment. However, I have to admit that it is pretty much stock android and you can disable almost any app without root which is really nice.
Anyway enjoy your phone and there are some threads already on this subject around here on xda. Folks have rooted the device and there is a restore to stock rom out also.
Later.
I am currently on the 3G $25 a month plan with the Moto X. Its been ok, cell handoff is decent although it gets really confused sometimes. Starbucks wifi, even if I have it not connected will cause issues because it constantly tries to connect/send the call through it but fails. Thats particularly annoying if your getting an important call and happen to be in a restaurant near a Starbucks. I have had other issues when just trying to send regular txts and being connected to an unstable wifi connection. The phone just keeps trying to send through wifi but fails to even send the txt rather then using the cellular network.
Honestly I just keep wifi off half the time because I get tired of the failed calls/txts even though sprints 3G (more like 2G) is terribly slow. Still it works and for $25 a month it cant be beat. I am on the fringe of Sprints 4G network though (literally 10 miles away from solid coverage) so I'm hoping they expand into my market soon. My exposure to sprints 4G/LTE network has been pretty positive, with some very competitive speeds.
I am on the $25 dollar plan with RW. I have found a few issues, but nothing that is terribly broken. When on the fringe of WiFi, I will sometimes have a text sent multiple times. I have been told that texts have been received in up to ten duplicates. Another problem is when the phone is connected to WiFi and has the cell radio disabled. The phone will temporarily disconnect from the RW servers or not respond to RW servers and a call will be missed because it was routed to cell, even though my cell radio is disabled. The result is that the person calling me is sent straight to voicemail.
Yeah so far I have only been on the $10/month plan. I will see how that fares the first time I go out of town- no data might be really annoying.
Does RW roam to Verizon's network for data too, or only for talk and text?
Just a general question. Would you say Republic wireless pros outway the cons?
I think it's worth it for people who are able to be on wifi coverage most of the day. The alternative for me would be a monthly unlimited plan at net10 for $45/month which means any phone I want and 2.5gb per month of data. The extra $35/month savings at RW is worth it for me, but if I was going to have to be on the $25/month plan and only save $15 to $20/month I'm not quite sure it would be worth it. Make sense?
I'm on the $10 plan. I think if Verizon would have let me use my Bionic without data, I would have stayed there. I love having a smartphone, but needed to save money, so I got the Moto X the day they released it for sale on RW. I don't leave the house much, and decided I could wait to get home to read emails and check Facebook. I got NavFree for offline navigation, but haven't really tried it out. So far, I'm VERY happy with RW, and the huge savings, and I love the phone.

I was very happy when I realized that Google Maps works without a data signal, you just have to get started from being on wifi, but once you are in the navigation it will continue to work after leaving wifi. It makes sense though because when you are driving often times you will drive through canyons or remote places where there is no cell signal at all and the navigation still works.

I read somewhere that it won't re-route if you don't have data and make a wrong turn our there's a detour. Also read that you can save parts of the map to use offline, but they go on the cache and then disappear if you reboot. Not sure if either are true, but I like the idea of having the NavFree maps on the phone all the time.

You said you can't root. Mine is very much rooting and gravitybox is unbeatable.

I love my MX with GravityBox.... I just did little things with it, but it made my phone cooler.... Changed colors, reduced the nav bar, centered the time w/day of the week. It's fun.

I've been reading through the forums trying to figure out how to root this thing so I can install the xposed framework and gravitybox, I should be able to use this toolkit to root my device right?

I have republic under the 25 dollar a month plan and I love it.
The room I work in is like a bomb shelter so reception is non-existant, but we have wifi everywhere so it's perfect. Overall the Sprint coverage is fine enough in between work and home.
I highly recommend it. Now If only we'd get the Kit Kat update.

That guide worked great! So happy to have quick unlock, pie controls, expanded desktop, battery circle percentage, advanced reboot, and so many other customizable options back in my control! I really thought I was giving this stuff up by switching to RW, happy to see I'm not. Thanks for your help and input guys!

Original post updated to reflect ability to root and install Xposed framework. Thanks for the heads up on what I was missing!
I just switched from a HTC One V on Virgin Mobile to the Moto X on RW! Huuuge upgrade!
As for service... I haven't had any issues yet. I know MMS doesn't work from the hangouts apps, but the is mainly it.
Great phone, low monthly bill. Won't complain.
