Quick question on if phone is rootable - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am very sorry if I am posting this in the wrong thread. My question is I am planning on buying a blue AT&T unlocked m7 from eBay. But I want to be sure that I will have the option to root/unlock boot loader for the GPE 5.0 if wanted. Is every GSM M7 able to? not sure if there is something special about it being blue.
Is there anyway to tell if I can or not?
Thank you so much!

If it's at&t Unlocking the bootloader shouldn't be a problem. You can do it at www.htcdev.com
To convert to GPE requires s-off which depending on the devices current firmware may cost extra. As you may need to use sunshine to s-off which costs $25. There are free exploits but non guarantee s-off on newer firmwares.
There are only 2 types of HTC one I know of that can't be unlocked and that's Verizon and GPE.

[Q] S-off

Do I unlock my bootloader using HTC.com website or should I wait for a developer to create a S-Off method? do we really need S-Off?

S-Off doesn't really have much use on this phone. Since it's Qualcomm, kernels can be flashed in recovery anyway, and the only real reason for S-Off would be to downgrade to previous firmwares.

so if I use HTC.com to unlock it, I will be able to flash roms and stuff from recovery as normally I do with my HTC 4G LTE ?(been doing it with the EVO and EVO 3D also)
i think the s-off method is preferable above HTCdev.
Warranty wise that is.
if you are s-off you won't be registered @ HTC for having unlocked your bootloader and thus reduced your warranty...

what if you don't want htc to know that you are rooting your phone for warranty purposes
any way of doing this? anyone working on s-off?
No idea if the phone has had a chance to reach anyone outside of the EU (and slow roll out even over here.)
I'm guessing that when the phone is in the hands of a lot more people the race will be on to be the 1st to deliver s-off.
Until there's a desperate need for me to flash an updated radio or maybe a bootloader I don't appear to need it though.

Until there has been worldwide release of the phone I doubt anybody will of even started work on it. I'd assume we might heard word of it about June time? Regarding people working on it that is.

Google Edition?

Not sure which thread I'm supposed to be in for the Google edition of the One, does it matter? I mean as long as it's a GSM variant I should be able to go from ATT, TMO and the original One threads and use the ROMs, right?
Correct. Stay away from 4.4 ROM unless you have soff

I haven't owned an HTC device for a while, but getting S-Off isn't too difficult with the One is it? I know with the Google Edition, it's already unlocked, but thats just bootloader?

[Q] Help for International M7

Hi,
I have a noob question, and I'm sorry that this not where i should post
I have an International HTC One M7 (4.4.2 and Sense 6). Since HTC is committed to provide OTAs for Android L, which I don't want to miss. But I want my phone to be S-Off and Unlocked bootloader. I've read a post saying that we are still eligible for OTAs if we have stock recovery, stock rom. So I just want to Unlock my bootloader and S-Off, thats it I dont want to install any recovery or flash any roms. I only want this because, i will be frank, i need that pan360 feature in my camera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU28g9yxzN4) as you can see at 14:45 in the linked video. So what should I do? And unlocking bootloader, getting s-off and relocking the bootloader qualifies us to get OTAs? how exactly does the HTCs OTAs check in my phone before it decides whether im eligible for OTA or not.
Thanks in advance!

Ok unlocking your boot loader and getting soff will have nothing to do with getting the app. That may rely on being rooted which will mean ugly will need to flash something. To be honest I wouldn't count on an ota before there is a flashable zip built from source.

You mean, we dont need an OTA since side loading is already available even before the OTA reaches the devices?? If YES then does rooting enable side loading?

Most of the time yes. There is a built ROM from source within a matter of hours if not before most get the OTA. No rooting doesn't enable it. Just unlocked bootloader. Maybe soff depending on if there is a new radio.
And to be honest with all the issues with OTA I never advise using them.
Also looking at the video. You would have to flash a rom to get what you want anyway.

Yeah, doesnt it look cool That rom in the video is from Elegancia which is discontinued now! And is it advisable to unlock your bootloader using HTC Dev? I hear if we do that using htc dev, you will never be able to get the OTAs or am i being paranoid? (considering your suggestion of OTAs being problematic )

To be honest I stopped using gas sense 5 min after I got the device. I am one of the old school that remembers Sense before Android and think HTC killed it.
Yes you can use HTC dev to unlock the bootloader. I wish advise hitting up the device forum and reading up
Oh and on a side note. HTC comment about the L release was targeting the GPE version of the device. Not the sense version.

Two more questions
1) How does putting a LOCKED message after unlocking the bootloader in the boot page helps? Most of the people are concerned about changing that message from UNLOCKED to LOCKED.
2) And will there be any problem if I just Unlock the bootloader and S-Off and continue using the Stock ROM from HTC that i have? I may root the device later, but keeping it like that could harm the device in any manner?

To be honest They worry about it because if HTC sees that you unlocked your bootloader then your warranty is voided. While This is something most accept as a price you pay for modding your device, Some dont want to accept the responsability and try to commit fraud but altering the bootloader to relocked status.
no there should be no problem with just doing that. But to be honest there is no point until your ready to take it further.

Thanks a lot for your answers I shall look for info in other threads and try to contribute. And HTC has committed to provide all the updates for a new device for 2 years, and the leaks from llabfooter on twitter show that L will also be released for other HTC one series models

HTC One M7 Carrier branded Unlocked?

Hi, I bought a my HTC one m7 from Amazon US and it turns out the phone was not Factory Unlocked but a phone from puerto rico that was Unlocked with a Carrier unlock code or something like that, the phone came in a sealed box which is why IDK wtf happened, anyways
I was trying to update my rom from the HTC website and it didnt let me because It said I had the wrong model, so I contacted HTC support and they told me what I wrote first.
So my question here is, I cant return the phone because I bought shipping outside the us but it was from Amazon (I have prime). Can I convert my BRANDED phone to factory unlocked or something? I cant upgrade to lollipop because apparently the carrier this phone had is not upgrading it.
Thanks.

Yes you can convert it but it will require S-OFF
Once s-off is achieved, you have to change your CID number, might also require to change the MID number and then you are good to flash an unbranded RUU.
Ok, are there any risks involving S-OFF? Like bricking, or something else? Cant I just get a rom of lollipop and flash it? Or I specifically need a ROM for my carrier?
What happens if you force flash a factory unlocked rom into a branded phone?
Thanks

S-OFF disable all protection of the phone enabling you to flash any partition of the phone so yes there are high risks of bricking if you don't know what you are doing.

Yes you can unlock the bootloader, flash twrp recovery and then flash a custom lollipop rom like maximusHD, Nusenseven, insert coin... Some custom roms qill require to update the firmware to a 7.xx.xxx.x version. I'm personally using insert coin 7.0.7 and it works great.
Code:

You can't. S-ON will prevent to flash any RUU (stock rom) that is not intended for your phone (not for your cid/mid).
