[Q] Icons aren't sharp, issue with display? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Nexus 6 and it's really nice, but the icons on the Google Now Launcher aren't that sharp, especially when compared to the Nexus 5. These are all Google apps and they're slightly fuzzy, especially noticeable on the edges, easier to see when looking a little closer to the display. Is anyone else seeing this? Could it be an issue with the display? Text and images look okay inside an app, it's mainly an issue with icons on the homescreen.
Also, the display seems really over saturated, I know it's AMOLED but I didn't expect the colours to be so saturated.

Coming from the G3 they don't look as sharp. Could be the Now launcher

its not the nexus 6 displays fault. its the fault of the developers who made those icons, for not using higher resolution images. the n6 screen is of a higher resolution, with lower resolution icons on the screen, that are larger in size than on the n5. what do you expect? of course they will look worse. the icons won't magically apear in higher resolution.

I'm talking about any apps, including the Google apps. Guess that's Google's fault for not using higher resolution icons for the N6 then?

Thanks for the reply, glad to know I'm not going insane. Just tried out Nova launcher and the icons look a lot sharper than they do with the Google Now Launcher. So it's software and not hardware, hoping a future update will correct the issue.

use any launcher, itll be the same. its not a n6 issue, its an issue with the resolution and size of the icons. you want them to look better? get root access and change the dpi of the screen. itll make the icons smaller, and they will look better.

Or use Nova Launcher (and probably Apex has it too) and change the icon size to be a bit smaller. That will stretch them less so they look sharper. You can go as much as +/- 20% in Nova.

[Q] Milestone: limited color display abilities?

Lately I've noticed that my Milestone has some problems with displaying colors.
I have attached the screenshot of my home, where you can see terrible transitions between similar hues.
lso, there is wallpaper file attached, which seems to be okay to me.
Is it common with those screens or it's just my Milestone?
my milestone does the same :/ could it be that it does not have 16 million colors?
24 bit images on a 16 bit display will cause the banding you see.

i find it weird that no reviews mentions this or even the specifications sheet, :/ the desire has an 24 bit display?
That's what I thought, pretty much.
Still, it being not mentioned is strange, as it seems to be fairly serious issue. Unless it's possible to convert images with no quality loss visible on the screen.
The proper term is dither, in cyanogen you can enable surface dithering in cyanogen mod settings > performance which should improve image quality at the cost of performance. Not sure about other roms.

im curious to know about the display used in the droid 2 and droid x, the htc desire, are they using a 24 bit display now?
The Droid/Milestone does have a 24-bit display: http://www.displaymate.com/Motorola_Droid_ShootOut.htm
In fact, the Droid 2 uses the same LCD.
That gradient problem with your image is probably caused by several problems:
1. The picture is not a true 24-bit image.
2. Google's Gallery is limited to 16-bit!
The Milestone/Droid has one of the finest LCDs on the market, and if it had not been so expensive when it was first released in Canada ($600!), I would have bought it in a heartbeat, despite the locked bootloader.
EDIT: I've just examined the photo on my 24-bit Aquos, and it looks perfectly smooth, so the problem is being caused by Android 2.1. FroYo's Gallery is also limited to 16-bit.
So what gallery could I use to put wallpapers on?
Flikie does pretty much the same, as it uses Froyo gallery.
Well, it seems that application named Wallpaper Set and Save (find it in market, it's free) is the easy way out.
This app lets you set the 24-bit wallpaper keeping the desired quality, more or less.
Though, it may make Launcher Pro FC a couple of times right after setting the new wallpaper, then it works flawlessly.

Yeah, I agree. Apparently, Samsung's Galaxy S Gallery is a bit better. Not truly 24-bit, but the Galaxy S adds improved dithering. The Galaxy S, with all of the hype about SAMOLED, is not even a real 24-bit display You Milestone/Droid/Droid 2 folks have the best Android screen, IMO.

320Dpi to 240Dpi

so my note has 320dpi native, what happens when i change it to 240dpi?
are there any advantages?Disadvantages?
This is being discussed on a separate thread, bit I think it is a good idea for a thread of its own.
I tried it, and the screen is much larger. That means most things in the screen are much smaller. It appears to make most launchers smoother as well.
I find it too small for my tired old eyes, but if your sight is good, I think it is a marvellous idea. It basically becomes a miniature tablet, and most apps seem to take advantage of that.
The stock phone dialer seems to be one of the very few TW apps that does not resize. TW also does not allow more cols and rows (IIRC), so it would be best to use another launcher, and perhaps Go Dialer.

Actually the thread is here, so this is a duplicate:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487309
you see more stuff in most apps for example in settings you see more options at once. most launchers do ok as long as you adjust rows columns although sometimes widgets look weird
i run darkyrom at 240dpi only. nothing is to small for me to read and everything but s-memo seems to work perfectly *you get some weird lines, just color over it with a white and go on with drawing .
i run adw ex launcher with 10x10 homescreen layout and 7 icon dockbar.
It´s so EASY!
It´s easy: Everbody who is interested in this, should definitly give it a shot. Get DPI Changer from the market for free and try it out yourself. There es nothing (again: nothing!) that will happen to your phone, you are always able to go back to 320 again without ANY issues.
The only one thing everbody has to do before is to install another launcher (I can fully recommend Go Launcher (ex), IMAO it´s the smoothest for our Gnote) just for that one reason: Damned TouchWiz doesn´t scale correctly.
Try it out folks, deside for yourself, it´s worth it!
just modify the build.prop density to 240. The default 320 is too big and it pains the eye after many usages!
there are a couple ways of doing it
the 2 above and also an app called "Rom Toolbox" which i recommend more then the others because it also gives you alot more options for different things other then DPI aswell.
Can someone upload 2 screenshots with both resolution please?

The biggest advantage is that you can see more in the screen. Especially useful with context menu, browser, various apps and so on.
First 240 Dpi images

Thanks drgopoos... 240 looks more like a phone, and 320 looks more like a mini tablet... One question, does dpi is the same as ppi?
I see my iPhone 4svis 330 ppi the Gnex is 320ppi and the note is 236... does that mean the resolution is lower?

It means that the screen has less physical pixels per inch, so it can be same resolution as a smaller screen that has bigger ppi.
Which means that even tho u have less ppi on the gnote, you still have more resolution than the other phones cause of the size of the gnote's screen.
Ppl say dpi for screens but the correct term is indeed ppi. dpi is for printers.
Does the CriskeloRom can also change to DPI or not ? need depend on the launcher or not ?

What is the best DPI for our Note

Hi folks!
I was just wondering what is the best DPI settings for our note without hindering usability.
I would like a general opinion.

i run gingerbread at 240dpi, and ICS alpha at 213dpi
seem to be the best ones for each android version
160dpi on GB and well on ICS makes everything a little bit to small
240dpi is perfect due to 90% of phones being stock at this.
*s-memo does mess up on any dpi not 320dpi so remember that
213dpi on ICS brings out full tablet mode but keeps the screen readable
Where can i find info on this ics alpha? id love to give it a shot.

KNOWN BUGS
Bluetooth is unstable. Don't rely on it just yet
Battery Usage doesn't work.
MTP Mode does not work. You need to push/pull files via adb
Camera doesn't work. Will be that way until we can get our hands on a ICS
leak for the Galaxy Note
Best regards

I've set mine to 240, and loving it. I think it's the best setup for usability and aesthetic for the Gnote. I don't think I would ever go back to the default DPI after switching it to 240.
240
From my experience 240 is by far the best. It is too small for me, but I have poor eyesight (one of the main reasons for buying the Note). For most people it should be fairly easy to adjust too, I would think.

cmon guys... DPI? that's for printers...
The correct term for screens is PPI, and, it's a physical characteristic of the screen, it's impossible to change a screen's PPI after it's manufactured.
The 320dpi, 240dpi thing that you talk about and which android refers to as lcd density internally is like a virtual pitch, the spacing between each pixel displayed on the screen.
That's why when you decrease the spacing between each pixel from 320 to 240 for example you get much more spacing on the screen cause more pixels fits on the screen.
So a more correct term than DPI or PPI is PITCH. (which isn't also 100% correct cause you can't also change pitch of a screen as it is fixed, but it's like a virtual pitch setting that we can change to "fool" the OS into displaying things as if the phone had a different screen installed)

There are so many advantages to rooting. Imagine running your very own Windows PC without admin rights? That what carriers, and even vendors like Samsung, are trying to force on us. It's BS.

The point is that using a correct term to name something is sometimes not bad at all
[/OT]
Even though lowering the "virtual density" to 240 will allow for more real estate on the display, I am not totally sure that the need to consult an ophalmologist won't increase likewise after that.
It is looking good when you take a snapshot though.

Nah, i think we'll continue with the term "DPI" (Dots Per Inch) But you're right, there's a huge difference between DPI and PPI, but that's not the case since no one has used the term "PPI" here.

[Q] Pixelated Screen Resolutions?

This may just be me being dumb, but I feel as if the display on the Moto X isnt very sharp. I know its a 1080p display, but it doesnt look super sharp. I can see some of the outer pixels of some of my apps, yes if I am trying to look for said pixels, but It doesnt look crisp regardless. Also, a question about the wallpapers, I have many high resolution wallpapers I would love to use, but when I set them as a wallpaper, they look terrible. I understand the phone dimensions are not the same as the picture and that cropping and zooming in is needed, but it just looks more worse than what it should be (after going into the gallery and actually blowing up the picture myself. How do you guys feel about the Moto X's screen? Love it? Hate it? Suggestions for my wallpaper problems?

I just set my background in a similar fashion and the picture looks great. It had to crop the picture as well (since the picture was 16:9) and it still looked good. I just went through a few of my apps and looked very closely to see if there was any visible and I see a kind of grainy film over the whole screen that doesn't move with scrolling. Its hard to describe, it almost looks like a picture taken at too high of an ISO. Never noticed it until I was looking.

Firefox font blurry

Hi,
the current firefox for android seems to be quite nice in regard to add-ons and UI, but sadly the font often looks a little bit ugly and blurry when compared to Chrome/Opera or basically any other App on my Fire. Are there any tweaks to address this problem?

I can't explain why you'd be seeing this only in Firefox but not other apps. But in my experience, this just isn't a very good display. Anything with fine detail (like text) looks blurry to me. Plus the pixels are not sized evenly.
yeah, it's a little bit weird, if you compare only a single screenshot there isn't that much difference at first, but if you look closely, the font rendering in FF just isn't as clean, for example this little gray areas below the a and the e are really disturbing and add up to a much less clean picture

I don't use FF but one thing you can try is to switch to a dpi of 213. The howto is mentioned in other threads.

Changing DPI won't alter screen characteristics, especially w.r.t. 'blurry' images, but you may like the effect better.

thx, I've installed UI Tuner and played around with it a little bit. There is an interesting option "per app settings", but it doesn't seem to work for me. Changing the dpi system wide does work and the font looks a little bit nicer, but the overall experience isn't that great IMHO as it just looks like a blown up smartphone with the phone UI and a pretty large font that still looks worse than in other browsers - I guess I'll stick with Opera, it isn't that bad after all (sometimes it takes a little bit too long to start on the fire, but I like the UI better than Chromes and it syncs with my Opera-Account)
