Nexus 5 is the official phone for Royal Carribean - Nexus 5 General

photographers. Every one of the guys taking pictures for Royal Carribean was using this setup. It was pretty cool seeing all these nexus 5's around the ship. Can anyone with some camera insight give us an idea of how they are using the phone in conjuction with the camera?

Not a photographer and have no real knowledge of professional cameras, etc.
However it looks like he's using an OTG cable. I use one to pair my PS3 controller to my phone. My guess is they used it to instantly touch up / upload any photos that they took.
Edit: Anyone know what's mounted above the phone?

Above the phone is the card reader for when passengers want their photo taken. It associates the card with the picture and adds o the passengers database for viewing.

basically they using the N5 as a portable mini tablet...
they may use it as a viewfinder
they could backup pics to it
upload them
edit them
maybe even GPS tag them

I guess it is a combination of all said beforehand, card reader to read passenger cards, viewfinder (I got the same for my Canon), upload to cloud of pictures (got the same as WiFi SDcard), remote shutter etc.

And if anyone was wondering I took that picture with my moto x + qx100.

The only thing we can say for sure is they're not using it to actually take the photographs - ZING!

I use the same set up when I am on the road with my Canon 550D. You take a mini USB cable and attach it to the camera. Aftwerds to attach the USB 2.0 end to a USB OTG with a micro USB connection to go into the phone. Download DSLR controller by chainfire and presto you have the equivalent to a laptop on your phone. You can view pictures, send them to phone storage and FULLY control the camera remotely. And it provides a live view of what the camera sees. It goes as far as to letting you time lapse. Its an awesome app and worth the money. The card reader is obviously for selling the photos. Many photographers are using it now and so are waiters at restaurants here in nyc

The only thing I was not able to control was the flash compensation. Do you know how to do it?
If not I guess I have to send Chainfire a feature request lol
Except for that, money well spent on that app, I use it preferably when I am shooting cars for FORMAT67 and Hashiriay.net. I take several pictures with a polarization filter and merge them together in PS. When I use my L-Lenses, I sometimes move the tripod when I push the shutter. Not with that app anymore. I also have a 550D so it makes a nice viewfinder too.

Seems like a decent price, even though the device could use a better screen, bluetooth, and hdmi out. I grabbed a rain check while I think about a possible new toy...
Saw this on Engadget yesterday. The thing doesn't do portrait mode, doesn't have an accelerometer, and almost all signs point to the touch screen being resistive rather than capacitive. Still, for $150 I could slap some velcro on the back and on my cabinets and use it to follow recipes when cooking.

Huh. I spoke with tech support yesterday and they said it didn't support portrait. But we were also talking about the lack of an accelerometer so they might have just meant it didn't automatically flip.
Well I talked to them again today, and I dont get the warm and fuzzy feeling about the answers, but here is what "Ari" had to say:
Ari: unit has options for a prtrait and mode
Ari: headphone jack should be 3.5mm
Ari: unit has a camera
Ari: it has a usb slot for file transfers
Ari: 800mgz for prcessors
Ari: it should be able to charge with the usb also
Ari: it should have a calibrate command also
Ari: and program similar for the android market
Ari: it is using an android 2.1 program
Ari: i apologize this is just a new device and not all program alternatives and specifications has not fully been established
Ari: it is supposed to be out end of the week
Ari: and by august
Ari: i'm basing that from the manual sent to me

They're just reselling the hardware I'm guessing. No way a Florida company could make this cheaper than China can.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
mistakes happen. how do people forget to take thier vitamins in the morning? how do people forget there coffee mug on the roof of thier car?

Well, that's good to hear. Really all I'd ever want one for is reading in bed, surfing the web while on the couch and most importantly, following recipes online without having to print them. Velcro that thing to the cabinet and we're golden.
Can you post some pics of the device from different angles? I'm curious how thick it is and where the ports are.
Seems my local store has a few in stock here, so I'm swinging by on my way home to grab one. Ill report back what I can about the device later tonight or tomorrow morning. Supposed firmware update released tomorrow.

Use HD2 as Dash Cam

Do you guys know how to use the HD2 as a Dash Cam? I know there are some car docks for the Touch Pro and the Nexus One and you can end up using the phones camera as a Dash Cam (like a police one) and you can record some cool stuff you see while driving.
Try BRODIT-car holder for HD2. It´s the most flexible solution and You can move it in any position for recording. I have it in my car, on my motorcycle and in my microlight airplane for recording vids ....................

Seems like a nice solution. I was wondering about that as well.
Especially since I live in a city in which many drivers bump your car and just leave. Having a camera in the car while you are gone is priceless.
Will make the handling of such ... bums ... that just leave after they hit your car easier!
Slight problem with your idea tomthemd, probably the first crash you hear after leaving your car, will be the sound of a car window, when your phone was stolen, and no picture of thief as no phone.
Yeah, lol leaving the phone on the dash as an evidence gathering device - not gonna last long. lol I was hoping to use it whenever I see something cool while driving (accidents, show that I was late cause there was traffic, accidents..) I have a police scanner so having this would be awesome to show friends.

Portable webcam?

So as we are all aware, the captivate does not have a front facing camera. This doesn't bother me considering I never video chat. However, that may not be the same case for others. I was thinking today, computers and laptops have plugin webcams for USB ports. Why not smartphones? It could plug right into the top of the phone via the micro USB port and be the size of something like a wireless mouse receiver for a laptop. Could something like this physically be done? I know people who could do the physical part of the work like make the actual prototype, but would any coding/scripting need to be done inside the phone? I think it something alot of people want/need and could be profitable if successful. Share your opinions. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum or is a prepost...

I think if people are going to have to carry around a separate piece of equipment for video chat, they may as well not worry about software and just use one of those mirror attachments I have seen out there. Then you'd have a 5 MP FFC instead of a 1.3 MP one like most FFCs.
I for one would like that feature. It will be a while before I can upgrade again to a newer phone that has video chat and such. I don't know coding and such but I couldn't see why someone couldn't create an app that can be installed with said hardware if one was made. I too think something like that would be awesome. I can't see why if one can be added onto a laptop ( that doesn't already have one) with the added program files why something like that wouldn't work here.
I wouldn't mind carrying a extra bit of hardware with me. I mean I already bring with me an extra battery charger and my bluetooth and wired headsets. It wouldn't be something that would be used all the time. Another feature that our cpativates are lacking that could be added is a led light for when using the webcam. I have thought about making a case or something that has a led light that can (at least) run off a seperate battery and have a switch to turn on the light. But if something could. E done with a webcam that has a light also ( possibly a swivel webcam that rotates so you can either use it for video chat or as a seperate video camera) then you could have the led light turn on when needed for the camera or video functions. Good luck and make millions$. I am sure something like that could be a big seller for even cross platforms for phones that do not have video webcam/ chat or at least for all the android phones that don't.

Sounds like we should start a bounty. I'd love to be able to attach a MIDI controller.
The camera really would not need to be that big. If you look at the size of the camera night now its basically as big as a shirt button. I was thinking if you used something like a JIG but with a small camera on top it really should be no bigger then a quarter. Personally I be willing to pay maybe $100 for a little plug in video camera like that.
I would really like to see something like what the Motorola Atrix has going on with the ability to connect to a computer a basically have the Android OS running as separate OS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWIe8wQBqS0&hd=1
That would be a great idea.... But its probably done, just some product marketing guy needs to say ok sell it....
Cause doesn't the new google laptop have a webcam? That webcam piece is the size of strip of gum usually. Just need the connector and done.
I would much rather have some sort of small mirror/prism attachment that would piggy-back on the top of the phone, feeding my image into the already existing image into the camera.
Heck,
would sitting in front of a mirror and using skype/qik work?

Nexus 7 and a Nikon D300

I know there has been plenty said about the Nexus 7 and using a USB OTG cable for extra storage but I thought I'd mention my success of hooking up my Nikon D300. I had ordered a USB OTG cable from ebay (r.ebay.com/zf1p7D) before my Nexus arrived. Tonight I plugged the three things together and as soon as I turned the camera on the gallery appeared, all ready for the photos to be imported.
Fantastic, basic photo processing on the go, still can't match Lightroom but I can take this solution with me
Hmmm i wonder if my D3100 can do this Thanks for the heads up!

Does USB OTG work on the nexus 7 without root?
EDIT: Just read up on this, so apparently Nexus 7 does not support USB OTG, but it will support USB Host. Does this mean I won't be able to plug in SD-Cards with the USB OTG cable but I will be able to connect keyboards, mouse, or even cameras like your Nikon?

I don't think you need root to use USB HOST. All you need is the adapter cable. Only if you want to use the N7 to open up storage devices, you will need to have root.
All that I've done getting the contents of my D300 in the gallery was done on a fresh out of the box Nexus 7. No rooting.

OK this is what I was doing. My original idea of buying the USB OTG cable was for controlling the camera from the tablet. So last night I visited the play store and installed a free version of the application (search for Nikon in the store). Once I had cabled everything together and before I had started the application I turned the camera on. When I did the the Nexus sprang into life, opening the gallery. I thought it was something I knocked so I backed out from the gallery and turned the camera off to try again. I did it again and realized it wasn't me. At first a new folder for the cameras photos didn't appear but I did notice that the access light on the camera was flashing like crazy. Then after a few seconds a new folder appeared showing all my cameras photos ready to be imported. I thought it might have been something to do with the application I had installed so I uninstalled that and everything still worked.
Hope this helps.
Edit: my kids got ahold my nexus again.

I know it works for my canon. And it's awesome. You get all the controls on your nexus screen, and you can see basically what the output will be before taking a picture.

Haha damn, too bad my 5D cant do any of that. Full frame fun makes up for it though >.>
Just wondering, when you plugged in your D300, what mode was it set to? Theres usually a setting on the camera for what to do with USB (act as storage device or connect to printer). Might be why your D300 worked so easily while the other guy's D3100 didnt work at all.
I'm glad you bumped this thread. I finally got my otg cable and am happy/plesently surprised that my d3100 does work with my n7 tablet. I shoot in raw format so I use a special app to view the photos. The stock gallery app does show the camera and a download icon but because of the format it is unable to do it.

REVIEW samDock the Apple to Android converter cable with VIDEO SLIDESHOW!

Today we’re looking at the samDock
Click here to see the original review and you'll also find links to purchase.
The samDock is an adapter cable that let's you use Samsung's latest Android phones like the Note 2 with Apple's 30 pin connector to charge or play audio.
Main advantage: affordable, long length, works by simply plugging it in
Main concern: NONE
Unique features: You can use android devices on Apple docks!!!
I've personally wanted a product like this for years, but it just didn't exist. It seems so simple, there are adapters for everything why not one that adapts Apple's useless proprietary connector to work with the much more universal micro USB standard? The good news is that the wait is over, the bad news is that most people don't care at this point unfortunately. We've seen the wide scale adoption of Bluetooth and things like DLNA, Wifi Direct, and mirrorlink. That means that Apple's stranglehold on the accessory market gets weaker and weaker by the day. For a time, it was the law of the land that all of the coolest docking solutions were Apple exclusive. That's just where the money was, so that's where the effort went.
Nowadays wires are a nuisance and wireless is nearly standard. Bluetooth is everywhere and it's in everything. The great news for those of you that dropped your hard earned money on some sort of Apple capable dock is that this is an extremely affordable solution. If you need to use your Note 2 or most any other Galaxy device with an Apple 30 pin dock it's as simple as plugging this wire in. For some phones that's all it takes and you're done. Others will have to go into your settings and enable Audio Output Mode. You'll just check the box that says, "use external speakers when device is docked.” That's all it takes though. Docks big and small, portable or built in. You'll pass through high quality audio and you even retain the ability to charge your devices.
The cable itself is 24” long, 2 feet is long enough to do plenty without feeling tethered to a dock. It comes in black instead of the apple standard white which is a nice little touch of defiance. It worked with every dock that I tested as well as simply attaching it to an apple charging cable. It will work with the Galaxy S 3 and 4 as well as the Note 1 and 2.
Thank you again to CableJive for supplying their product for review.
Alternatives: none that I've seen
How much: 24.95 each at CableJive.com
Is it worth buying: For under thirty dollars, it's worth buying it to just throw it in your bag on the off chance that you find yourself at a friend's house and you need to arrange some last minute karaoke with an iPod alarm clock.

agreed! 100%!
Another point, people have invested a lot of money into Apple accessories and can take advantage of using it with android phone. But the whole beauty of apple gadgets was docking integration without any need for cables or devices laying on the side. This solution does work, but you kill the look of the setup by not being able to dock your smartphone.

are you guys talking about the very start of every video? The opening with the choir type voices? That's from an everclear song.
Otherwise, for every product reviewed, I pick a song that has something to do with the product or it's name. It's just a fun little touch. So this is the samDOCK so the song is hickory dickory DOCK, which is a child's nursery rhyme. It's just a goofy little added touch and you can always mute and just look at the pictures if the music is bugging you. I was this close to doing a death metal cover of hickory dickory dock but I couldn't find a clear enough recording.
now that I think of it there were a bit of children's songs, they just fit really well. I reviewed a wireless charging dock the other day and I used the song, "I've got no strings" from Pinocchio. "I've got no strings, to hold me down" no wires, wireless charging, you get it. Just a fun little touch.
They aren't always kids songs.
Lol I really think everyone is giving you a hard time because that zip thing you reviewed was just stupid.
I mean really guys no one is forcing you to watch the slideshow, you can always mute and listen to whatever you want if you want to setethe pictures.

Not trying to give you a hard time by any means, it's honestly meant as constructive criticism! I am truthfully trying to be helpful, nothing else! You may not care though, and if what your doing is working for you then I suppose there's no need to change it. I just think your videos would be more professional without some of the music in them, that's all. I did watch many of your YouTube videos! Trying to help out because the more views the better for you. Like the NeatDesk Scanner, that song is just awful! Whether it goes with the product being reviewed or not, I find it very annoying. For the video showing the Otterbox Defender and Seidio Convert cases for the Note 2, I actually really like the song choice! That said though, I still think the video would appear more professional with out the song. Now for the Phillips Hue video, that's a great song choice!! No, not something that I would listen to in my car, but it's like elevator music, simple music with no lyrics. That is very fitting for your videos, and doesn't distract attention from the video whatsoever!! See, I'm not basing this off of what I like or want to hear, just telling you what I think comes off as being more professional. Of course, this is just my opinion. You may not even care what I think or what I have to say. I'm just trying to give you a viewer's perspective, that's all.
Now on to this product! This is something I really need!! My tool chest/box has a CD player and 2 6x9 speakers built in to it! This was one of the selling points to me, not the only one as this tool chest has many unique features not found in any other tool chest, but one of the selling points nonetheless. Coming out of a little slot in the top area of the tool chest/box once the lid has been opened, there is a cable that is tied in to the stereo system in the tool chest. It has an Apple connection on the end of it . Isn't that big of deal, as the CD player also has a 3.5 mm auxiliary jack on it, so I can just use that. I would like to be able to shut the little door that covers the CD player while I'm working though (also has a remote for it), and can't do that with an auxiliary cable sticking out. I do have a 4th Gen iPod Touch 32GB. The remote also allows me to skip songs when it's hooked up through the Apple cable, which is a very nice function!! Obviously the remote can't do anything with my phone, except adjust volume, when it's hooked up through the auxiliary cable. With this adapter/converter you posted here, it would give me the same functionality of my phone as I currently have with my iPod!!
Honestly, using my iPod in the tool chest is basically the only reason I haven't sold it yet! Getting this adapter would be awesome for me! Thank you for taking the time to make this review, and especially for sharing it with this community!! It's greatly appreciated!!

Glad I dont own any Apple docks!
Well,
Got one today and I've now tried 3 docks and it works on none. I've flashed back to stock ROM in case it wasn't compatible with ProBAM.
Not having a bit of it. Money down the drain.

...So this is the samDOCK so the song is hickory dickory DOCK, which is a child's nursery rhyme. It's just a goofy little added touch...
the other day and I used the song, "I've got no strings" from Pinocchio. "I've got no strings, to hold me down" ...

We gave feedback to hopefully help you improve the reception of your videos.
If you don't want the feedback or use it in anyway, don't expect fanfare and trumpets for future works.
But nah, listen to the guy that didn't bother to watch or even attempt to watch your work.
Best of luck amigo.

I like to pick out a song that hints to the product in a some way. I don't give hints in the description and sometimes it's harder to figure out why I'd choose a certain song. It's a little side game and people have contacted me saying that it makes them happy to figure it out. I could just find generic background music, but I'm trying to put in a bit more effort than that. Please mute it if it upsets you.
I've seen some adapters similar to this on ebay for cheap. Not sure if they'll allow data(music is the only thing I want) to pass through though. Anyone try one of the adaptors from ebay or similar? Less than $10, so they're super cheap, but even still I don't wanna through ANY money at them if they'll only charge...

Hi
I'm thinking about creating something along the lines of Grace Digital GDI GSD8200 - in my option would be - (Bose sounddock => cablejive /samDock/ => iGRIP Universal Micro USB Charging Dock ) - mounted on the top of my Bose and use it for my Samsung Galaxy phone
My question is - if micro usb plug from samDock will work with the iGRIP charging dock ? (charging and sound signal) or any micro usb charging dock

Or any charging docs ?
