Basically my questions are simple, I tried Googling quite extensively but cannot find a comprehensive answer.
Moto X Motomaker vs the Moto X Developer Edition pro and cons...
Here is what I think I know
Motomaker (MM from this point forward) is how you make it, has 16 and 32gb models and comes with a locked bootloader that must be unlocked to flash a ROM or change the fancy things like battery icons and the framework mods. Must wait for verizon to push updates to you at their own rate.. let me know if i'm wrong..
Developer Edition (DE from this for forward) is only 2 tone black and white and only available in 32gb. Bootloader is unlocked stock, can flash roms, change framework, custom apps, mod and tethering, android updates available whenever Google releases them or just come to XDA and find a leak.
I'm wondering if getting the DE is going to be worth the cost and if i comes BLANK with no Verizon bloat on-board. can i still use active notification and camera gesture etc if i flash a ROM?
I understand that the idea flashing a ROM is to get as close as humanly possible to stock android which it already is.
I'm going to be purchasing tomorrow so if you are all out there a timely response would be awesome!
On a side note I'm getting this phone to replace an S4 thats limping along with Safestrap and a Nexus Launcher.

If you want to run latest versions of android as soon as possible, Developer Edition might not be the ticket. As you can see already, carriers have started to push out kitkat earlier than motorola itself.

I'm in the same boat. I think the idea of the Moto X is great especially since it's getting the updates in a timely manner. I wonder though if the Developer Edition would be any different. Just because it's a Developer Edition doesn't mean it's a Google Play Edition meaning it will probably only receive the update when the Moto Maker X gets an update. That being the case (if I'm correct). Should I purchase the Developer Edition over the Motor Maker X. The only thing I would need to do is wifi tether since I am still on unlimited data and use it daily.
I have the Verizon Dev edition, and the only reason why I got it was so that I can unlock it and root it. With Dev editions you can only get white. If you want to unlock and root and are on AT&T or Verizon, then get the Dev edition, otherwise just get the Moto Maker edition.

What have you done with your Dev Edition Moto X that you couldn't have done with the Moto Maker Version? And I'm asking what have you done, not what you plan on doing. Given the opportunity to do it all over again would you get the Dev Edition again or would you get a Moto Maker version?
Got the Dev edition and have not even unlocked the bootloader. Its that good . was thinking about it to install viper audio mod but have not yet

I have unlocked and rooted my phone, I have installed Xposed and Gravity Box, and Greenify. I also plan on changing the bootloader, but have not found one I liked.
I believe you can root the Moto X without unlocking the bootloader, but from what I understand it is a headache when OTAs come through and there are chances of it bricking the phone. Since I was able to unlock the bootloader, I was able to flash TWRP and flash SU. And I don't have to worry about OTAs screwing up my phone.
But I need to stress this, do not spend the extra money on Dev edition if you are not on Verizon or AT&T, the Moto Xs from Motomaker can be unlocked.
The only added bonus the Dev edition brings is that unlocking it does not void the warranty which is nice because there can be cases which arise when it is a manufacture defect which the warranty would cover and it is nice to have that protection. But if you unlock a non Dev edition, it will void the warranty.
I personally would go with the Dev edition. There is always bound to be something I want to do to it. Plus future proofing

I did not unlock the bootloader until last week, which is also when I finally got time to unlock it and root the phone. But the change in warranty policy was a nice push.
I recommend unlocking and rooting your phone, I really missed Greenify and Titanium Backup. It might be a placebo effect or being on break last week I didn't use the phone as I normally do, but Greenify really helped the battery life. I went almost 22 hrs and about 2 hrs of screen time with no recharge couple times, using (Snapchat, Chrome, Reddit News, SMS, Hangouts, Phone, Plume, Maps, CBS Sports) heavily. Hopefully when I go back to normal usage this occurs again.
I should have been thinking about this a lot sooner than tonight. I'm leaning towards the Moto Maker edition for the obvious reasons of the color options. All I need is root the main thing I care about is tethering. And if I'm not mistaken there are apps on the market that will allow me to do that without root. I currently have a rooted Verizon Galaxy Note 3 and the only thing I use root for is tethering.
I went for the developer edition. I think it is worth the money..

"flagship product" - Motomaker is advertised, Dev edition is not known to all.
"Investment in quality products" - they are both the same phone.

I'm planning to buy the Moto X today. I live in Asia/Middle East. Will the T-Mobile Off contract version work? Because i want to customize my phone through moto maker. I know LTE most likely most wont work, but my main concern is will it detect any sim and 3g data should work. Thanks for the help in advance.

yes t-mobile is sim unlocked and 3g should work.
I'm going to get flamed for this but I'm getting irritated with Verizon or Motorola on how long this is taking. The 4.4 update took 4 weeks max and was a big update and this "minor" update has taken 2 months.....I don't understand what the hold up is. I bought this phone off contract because I wanted a phone that would receive updates relatively quickly and based my decision on the fast update to KitKat. I know there are a few Moto people here.....any insight on the delay? I do understand this is minor....just like being up to date. Okay...everyone yell at me for asking about this .
I'm used to updates taking 6-12 months, so I'm not complaining. It hasn't been that long since the last update.

Reason why because people are going to hard brick the frigging devices, all unlockable boot loader firmware will be sent out first to see how things go, at that point moto will send out Verizon and at&t firmware and watch all the hard bricks that happen, hope I'm wrong .

Well, that's a reasonable explanation . Why are they messing with the bootloader with every update? I think it was you that posted in another thread about PM'ing this info rather than posting it on an open thread? If you don't mind I'd appreciate your explanation on this..If it's not a hassle PM'ing me with the info you have would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
The first update was a special occasion. Verizon never pushes crap out that fast. Money changed hands to get the first X and G updates through carriers ASAP is my guess. The carriers also got burned by the 4.4 exchange bugs which have probably been causing thousands of customer service calls and returns.
We're on a more normal schedule now, although still faster than Samsung or HTC as there is little to modify. Expect Verizon to be last with a 3-6 month delay for updates. Sunday will be 2 months since 4.4.2 pushed to the nexus 5. I would still be (pleasantly) surprised if we saw it before March or even April.
If you bought this phone thinking every update would be within weeks I'll remind you than a single data point does not make a trend.

Verizon and at&t have locked boot loader on their consumer version, we all know about slapmymoto and all the root hacks, so does moto. The reason why the eliminated boot loader downgrade is due to slapmymoto, no other reason to do it. Just my thoughts . Moto left the vulnerability in the 4.4 upgrade , well its gone now so it should decrease hard bricks in theory but there's always someone who wants to stick a square peg in a round hole

I'm pretty sure downgrading the bootloader hasn't been possible on many recent moto phones. I agree that it's likely to prevent exploits, but it's not something new or unique to the X
Having just received my Verizon Dev Ed only a week or so ago, it updated to 4.4 almost immediately. What's better about 4.4.2?
We should also stress that some people have the update. Motorola is known for doing "Soak Tests" which, is a good idea. For production devices even if you HAVE all the specs on the device and drivers and such with the source code for them so as a developer you can go and in really look at everything... Takes time to not only make sure it works with the device on a basic level (compiles, boots, phone calls, etc..) there is the fact that bugs crop up and I have read a lot of things about it being pulled because of devices being locked - that of course has to be solved and since each device comes with a bootloader for the carrier it is on (unless I'm wrong in that since Sprint uses the 1060 as well and has the update) I would imagine Verizon is being cautious and giving it extra time. Perhaps Verizon noticed some bugs and the other carriers said to release and work on a fix later and Verizon said - no, fix it first.
I know it is hard to think of Verizon as a 'good guy' like that but it is possible, last thing they need is another phone update the kills devices - they've played that game before.
Anyway, just my two cents worth. I think it is being tested and tweaked before release.
Comparing this to the fact that my Galaxy Note 8.0 (which has no carrier cruft) still is on v4.2.2 and has been since October, so... I'm pretty happy with waiting a few months knowing that they'll get it out to me for the Moto X.

My question exactly. I bet most people who harp about updates don't even know what the changes are. I have 4.4.2 on my N7 and I can't tell a difference in performance compared to 4.4. Most of the changes are camera related for the N5 and N7 which doesn't affect the Moto x's camera since it's updates come from the play store.

Verizon customer complaining about slow updates? Surprise surprise. Dude there are phones on Verizon right now that are still on 4.1-4.3 I'd relax and thank my lucky stars Motorola is only taking months instead of years.
If fast updates were so important you should have gotten a developer edition. I've had 4.4.2 for at least a week now and I had most of the 4.4 bugs fixed months ago

Developer Editions don't get updates any faster than non-DE versions. The carriers still have to release the updates. I have a VZW DE, and I do not have 4.4.2 yet.
You do realize that you can install it yourself right? There are images all over the place now.

I don't think there are Verizon/xt1060 4.4.2 images available yet. There are 4.4 images readily available though,

I understand I can flash the system image from another service provider. Everything I've come across is a sbf file....I can't flash just system from that can I? My last two phones have been from Samsung so I'm not too familiar with this stuff yet.

I highly discourage you from doing this. There have been several people bricking by flashing the wrong thing. I almost bricked mine, but was able to save it. Then I had to spend 2 hours on the phone with Verizon because something I flashed made my phone show up as a non-Verizon device and temporarily blacklisted it. It now registers as a test device in Verizon's system, and I don't know what the implications of that is if I try to sell it later to someone else.
It was absolutely not worth it and I should have waited for my carrier to officially release an upgrade. I'm sure some here will disagree with me, but I'm telling you from personal experience.

I to agree with the previous poster, as you said you came from a Sammy product, forget and throw all the past experience with Sammy out the window. Moto is a totally different beast. Wait till your sbf firmware is available and flash that. I have seen to many know it alls royally screw their brand new moto's up. Patience soon all will be for told , I can see in the not so distance future the 4.4.2 update

So I just picked up a Moto x after having owned a Galaxy nexus for about a year and a half. So there are a few things that currently bother me, and seems like there are no fixes to date.
Moto X (2013), Verizon with unlimited data, OS 4.4.4, non-dev edition, bootloader locked and no root access.
1. There are no solutions to unlock the bootloader as of today.
2. There are no solutions to root and ROM.
3. I cannot use the native hotspot tether feature on my unlimited plan. Has anyone tried the clockworkmod paid tether app ($5) or any other tether app? Can I USB tether from my phone to my Nexus 7 or another phone?
4. Can I somehow remove (unlikely) or at least hide the bloatware?
My browsing of the moto x forums has basically told me that I'm stuck with some upgraded hardware and some highly restricted software comapred to my last phone. I'm very much enjoying the phone and it's new intricacies that my galaxy nexus didn't offer, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I believe you are SoL on bootloader unlock/root so 1-3 are out I believe. 4 you can go into settings>apps>disable for the ones you don't want to see.

For #1 you are correct. With the NON-Developer Edition Verizon Moto X (XT1060), the bootloader is locked. Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes for Verizon, ATT and Republic Wireless. Your only option at this point would be IF the China Middleman starts responding again, to buy a code from him.
With a locked bootloader there is no root, and no way to disable write protection when on 4.4.4. Past root exploits don't work. For #2 and #3, they require an unlocked bootloader.
For #4. Some of the bloat can be "disabled" via Settings -> Apps -> All... open the app you want, and see if the Disable button is there. 3rd party apps to FREEZE wont work because you are not rooted and write protection is still enabled.
Thanks for confirming my findings. I'm a bit disappointed, since I still have unlimited data. The tethering is the main issue that absolutely makes me loathe Verizon.
On a sidenote, I've never handled the developer version of the VZN moto x. Does it still have the Motorola features, such as active display, etc?

The Dev edition and retail/moto maker variants are exactly the same software and roms.
The dev edition is only available as black front, woven white back that says "developer edition" on it, with silver accents (camera ring and buttons), 32 gig, and Moto provides the boot loader unlock code and it doesn't void the warranty.
The Moto maker is fully customizable, and Moto doesn't give the unlock code for verizon.
Thanks for the help guys! Unfortunately, I might have to jump ship to another phone that will allow me to tether. I feel like I have no control over the phone without root access, which I've always had for the past 3 years since having my first smartphone.
It's quite sad, since I actually love the rest of the phone...
Perhaps the new Nexus 6 or Droid Turbo, or watch swappa. Com for an unlocked version of the X

The S3 is a terrible downgrade... IMHO. My M8 went in for service and they lent me an S3....was just awful. Lol
Of course it wasn't rooted... But still awful. Feels and looks cheap. Slow. Just terrible. Should have got them to loan me a Sim for my S2...prefer it to the S3.
Yeah I already know the s3 is a step down from the moto x... I'm loving the moto so much! It just fails to do a few critical things the I've grown to need... Tether being the biggie.
I'm looking at a local rooted and bootloader unlocked s3. Hopefully that will prove my expectations wrong
Posting this from my new (to me) gs3. It indeed has an unlocked bootloader, and the previous owner already has cm11 loaded onto it. It's pretty snappy so far, and in enjoying it. So glad I don't need to put up with touchwiz!
Anyhow, I really miss active display already... And the motion activated camera launch[emoji22]
Hey everyone so I took the jump yesterday and ordered my new moto x from republic wireless the 1st gen not the 2nd. Just curious besides getting accessories for it. What software things should I do to it in terms of rooting. Not sure what version it will come with but is rooting going to be necessary for the device seeing as it's pretty stock android. I always rooted my Samsung galaxy devices or HTC devices to rid them of bloat, and my nexus 5 to use Franco kernel to tweak color profile. Sorry if this was answered before I'm just excited and want to make sure I get the best experience out of my new phone.

I recently picked up a X1060 Verizon Dev Edition (running an AT&T Sim Card) and I recently rooted and installed the Epsilon Project 4.4.4 Rom on it. Battery life improved a ton over stock. All the Verizon and barely used Google Apps were removed which saved space and RAM. I'm waiting for a stable Lollipop Rom right now.
If your device comes with 4.4.4, you won't be able to Root. Since you can't unlock the bootloader officially, and Sunshine won't work, cause you can't temp root 4.4.4 to use Sunshine.
If you get a lower Android version.... Then you'll need Sunshine to unlock the bootloader, for $25. Then you're all set to Root. See the one stop shop root thread sticky in general for details. ?

I still haven't receive the 5.1 update and I am getting anxious, since 5.0 runs fairly slowly on the moto x, and I really look forward to the speed boost offered by 5.1. But will there be a delay for updates because I am in Canada? And also a lot of people have got the 5.1 update already, is it still in a soak test process? Please let me know, I literally checks the update every hour lol.

Still on a soak test the second one actually for our 1095..... Things have slowed down considerably.....
Sure wish google would have kept Motorola It could have been like Nokia and windows, rock solid Nexus like phones lol.
