Just switched to a Moto X Pure from Nexus 5 and noticed some odd behavior. Not sure if there is something wrong with my phone or what.
- Phone arrived with 4.4.4 and I noticed the old Messaging App and Email client still installed.
- Quickly updated to Lollipop with latest App updates and old Messaging/Email Client is still there (seem to recall these disappear upon proper update)
- Unable to add Exchange based email accounts to the Gmail client (option doesn't exist)
- Get random errors/complaints about Google Services while in Gmail client account setup
At this point I became uncomfortable with things and figured it was some order of events. After wipe/reset, flashing back to 4.4.4 and upgrading to 5.0 in various ways I was still left with the same problem. Finally, I sideloaded the latest Exchange Services to got things working. I shouldn't have to do that. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you still have the old Email client and Messaging apps on your phone?
Really want to like this phone as I'm looking for a pure android experience on a reasonably sized phone. (grr Nexus 6). Don't really want to go back to my N5
No, there is nothing wrong with your phone. The "old" apps are still there - though the standard mail app should have a new look. Orange with Google´s Material Design.
And: As you did you need to sideload the exchange services for the Gmail app - if you wish to use THIS app with an exchange account. The "old" overhauled mail app got exchange support built in, works out of the box. Use that one in case you don't want to sideload anything.

Thank you sir. I was able to confirm the same with another MX14 user. I think it kinda sucks, but oh well. Appreciate the reply
I installed the exchange services app and then added my work email account but i am having problems with syncing. I keep getting syncing errors and new emails are not loading correctly.
Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.
Rick
Well, Exchange seems to be working for me now. What I had to do was install an older version of the GMail app (one of the 5.00 releases) and then it automatically updated later to the latest Gmail release but is still working.
So, steps I took were:
1) Install Exchange Services 6.5 update first
2) Installed Gmail 5.0 (1569867)
3) Later updated to latest Gmail version 5.0.1 (1642443)

Just went to Cognition 2.3b8 (froyo), mostly because I dont know any better and that appeared to be the most bug-free Froyo ROM for Captivate.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it so far, except that I cannot get Exchange email setup for work. I enter the same settings that I used in Eclair, but get the following error:
"Setup Could Not Finish. Unable to connect server".
The fully thing about that is, if I change my username or password to be wrong, I get an "incorrect username/password" error, which tells me that it is actually connecting to the server but something more subtle is wrong.
We do use Exchange 10 at work and I did attempt the solution posed by this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821297
Nothing....same problem. Anybody else have experience with this? Any fix or suggestions floating around?
Thx!
Nick
I had the same problem. I ended up using "Improved Email" from the market - it looks a lot like the stock email app but has a few enhancements (and is free). Turned out (I think) that my corporate exchange server needed security settings that stock email didn't have (and acknowledged as such). Try that app or check out one of the other email apps if you prefer.
FYI - from my research I think this is a known issue with 2.2 and was fixed with 2.2.1.

Good to know - thx for the info Now I need to find a good basic 2.2.1 rom that isnt hacked to heck. Thats another post about that tho
Tried "Improved Email" but it didnt work either. Totally stumped our IT guys until I admitted it wasn't the standard Captivate ROM. They suggested I tried a program called Touchdown. It works but looks like total crap.
Oh well
I had a same problem when I flashed w/ Darky... I reflashed it and set up the email before I Ti restore... When Ti back up, unselect email restore... It works fine now... f
Just flashed to cog 3.0 and everything is working!
Slightly different exchange issue
I also recently took the plunge and flashed Cognition 2.3b8 (using the ODIN, one-click-download, master clear, ROM manager method). When setting up Exchange afterwards, I get the following error when trying to connect to the server:
Steup could not finish. This server requires security features your phone does not support.
Same result when trying to use the "Improved Email" app. I just re-flashed back to stock with ODIN and then installed Cognition 3.04, and I got the same error message when trying to connect to the Exchange Server with the stock app.
I know it's not the login credential--if I change them around I get a different error message telling me that I am using the incorrect username/password combination. I have also tried to set up the Exchange account before and after doing the Ti restore.
Has anyone else seen this particular error message with the Cog ROMs? Thanks in advance.
Hello,
There hasn't been a lot of action on this thread recently, but I just fixed my issue and I wanted to post it for people's reference.
Some background. Since the last post, I updated to Cog 3.04 and fixed my Android ID, both in the hopes of fixing the Exchange issue. They did not. At the suggestion of a friend, I tried installing Touchdown, a third party mail app made specifically to work with MS Exchange. It was in fact able to sync with the Exchange server, and I now have my work email, contacts, and calender on my cappy. Some complaints:
- No integration with stock calendar app (as near as I can tell)
- Pay version is $20, which is a little pricey (I'm working with the 30-trial version for now)
Other than that, it seems like a pretty slick app, probably an overall improvement over the stock mail app, but I'll have to play around with it in the coming days to have more of an opinion there. One improvement I noticed immediately: I can move messages between personal folders using Touchdown, which I was not able to do with the stock app. On a side note, Exchange contacts, unlike the calender, integrated just fine with the phone contacts.
In summary, I have no clue why this mail application succeeded in syncing with my company's Exchange server when the stock app could not. However, I wanted to get this out there as an option if anyone else is having similar issues after updating their Captivate to some flavor of 2.2.
Is anyone else here on 2.3.6 with their Note (Rooted and CWM Kernel also) having problems with Exchange email?
I use a hosted exchange provider for my email, and have seen this issue before with Samsung (and some HTC) devices where Exchange Activesync just doesn't seem to work. I had this issue before with an AT&T Galaxy Tab I had tried a different ROM on to enable the phone radio in the Tab. It would never sync email, but the stock ROM would.
I know the account was added to the Note correctly, because I didn't get any error messages during setup, and I also got the prompt to confirm the security configuration change (to allow remote wipe, etc). The device also shows up correctly in the mobile device listing in Outlook Web Access in my account.
Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this, and what you did to fix it? Not really interested in a 3rd-party mail client like Touchdown, etc. Would prefer to use native apps.
Thanks, please advise.

If you want it for gmail, try this.
Go to Email - entre gmail credential - select manual setup - select exchange active sync - keep user ID n PW as it is n add m.google.com in server field, finish setup with rest of as per your desire
Thanks, but I am not interested in Gmail. I have already added a secondary gmail account and it works just fine.
I am trying to get a true Exchange (Corporate, of sorts) email account working. It kinda acts like it wants to work (I am seeing some Exchange calendar entries) but no emails or contacts yet... <sigh>

Mine is working fine. It sync my email with the exchange server. Im using Rocket ROM.
Using exchange exclusively also (hosted server) never had a problem. I tried with stock, then 2 different cooked roms. All worked perfectly. Am on latest rocky now.

Exchange email pushed OK, but calendar push never
Outlook email is pushed correct, but calendar never. Which application do you use for view/sync exchange calendar ?
My default email account works, but whenever I try to enter in a new email account, I get the following message:
"Unfortunately, email has stopped."
I am using Dynamic Kat Rom and have rooted the device using the standard instructions included for room, including installing TowelRoot, BusyBox, SafeStrap, etc.
I've searched everywhere for similar issues, and what I've read is that My Magazine has to be installed and running, which I do have, and I enabled it.
Here are the details on my phone:
SAMSUNG-SM-N900A
Android 4.4.2
Baseband N900AUCUCNC2
Hardware version REV0.3
I have to solve this or I'm going to have to go back to stock, which I hated because the bloatware had me looking at a loading icon for 5m every time I opened email. Ironically, the phone is massively faster now but I can't get my other gmail or my work exchange emails on it.
Minor side issue, I am seeing a green check mark in folders for app icons instead of the normal app icons (which I can see when I look at all apps, and it's random on the app - most have their normal icon, some do not).
So I've been working on this some and have successfully added new Google email accounts by adding Google accounts to the main account. Yay!
What I can not do is add a Microsoft Exchange email (my most important need). I get the error listed above about the email not working.
I can launch the My Magazine that was apparently an issue for others and the email app. It runs and gets information, so I don't think its that (unless there is something else I have to check relative to that, but I cant find the original thread discussion that others refer to sometimes in other threads).
Happy to report after monkeying around with every setting imaginable, I've got it to work now.

Hi guys,
I have an AT&T N6 and I'm trying to get my company exchange account setup on it. I'm able to successfully but when it goes to sync it just constantly force closes. Anyone else seen this?
No one else?
Hi,
Same problem here, Gmail started a crash report after trying to sync-loop like crazy with exchange, I had to use "Nine - Exchange ActiveSync" which fortunately works fine (I was using that app with my previous phone).
Nine is pretty awesome..... Just wish stock one would work to have everything in one spot. Oh well, I'm sure it will get fixed soon. At least I hope ?
Hi,
I received a gmail update yesterday, and now it' works fine, but I went back to nine because the gmail app doesn't have a unified inbox folder (I have a lot of folders in my exchange email lol)
What version of Exchange are you connecting to?
I have two Office 365 Exchange accounts on my phone, no bubbles no troubles.
you asked OP or me? , I am very sure that's in my case it's exchange 2010 (since I'm the server admin...)
anyways with the new Gmail, ver 5.0.1 (1618411), it's works fine and doesn't "force close-crash-loop" anymore.

Had the same issue and switched to Nine. Now that it's fixed I don't think I'm going back. Nine is just so much better.
I had this same issues with my nexus the other night. Constantly force closed. Got so bad the power button and screen were unresponsive.

Running a stock pre-rooted rom with locked bootloader (yes i tried stock as well). And have a problem with exchange. I have added an exchange account but it doesn't pull my calendar, and i'm often told that exchange services have stopped working. If i go into accounts and do a manual update, it sometimes stops duo to " exchange services have[...]" and sometimes it updates fine. But when i open google cal there's no exchange info..
This worked in kitkat, but since the L update i've not been able to get it to work.
Any suggestions ?

I have not been able to send Exchange mail since upgrading to Lollipop. Fortunately I have a cloud mailbox, so Outlook for Android works for me.
I may look at the Exchange problem again once they get the Xposed bootloop issue solved.
My gmail works fine as well, but exchange keeps crashing. I was told that each brand can build their own exchange app, so it would seem that the sony exchange app is bad.
I use the regular 'email' app in Lollipop for Exchange, seems to work fine.
It can be policies that your Exchange server is pushing to your phone.
Outlook.com works fine on my personal phone.
I've seen some more reports from Exchange-services misbehaving in the Lollipop build, specially (but not only) people upgrading from .690 to .726.
Factory reset helped in those cases.
