SuperSU already installed - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know why SuperSU is already installed on my Moto X PE? Came from the factory like that.

Sounds like you got sent a refurb/used phone. I'd call Motorola.

From Motomaker? Sounds fishy. I added a screenshot so you can see it. It doesn't appear in the app drawer, only as a system app, so it's not really rooted. Just the app is installed.

People do send back motomaker phones... What do you think motorola does with them? Again, I'd call them. SuperSU most definitely should not be preinstalled.

Sells them as refurbs, since you can't (legally) sell a phone as new if it's been in the hands of an end user.

I think the app auto installed when you logged into your google account.

I'm not saying they did it intentionally, just maybe that it slipped through the cracks.

Don't forget Motorola is a Chinese company now, and there is no illegal thing there. Everything is legal.

Did it come with Kit Kat or Lollipop out of the box? I got mine yesterday and it was still Kit Kat and a friend got his Monday, also Kit Kat. Both MotoMaker Pure Editions.

It came with KitKat out of the box. It also auto update itself after a factory reset. I don't care that it's there, I just thought it was strange. I went ahead and rooted it anyway, so it doesn't matter anymore.

I agree. I factory reset my device and SuperSU pro was installed from the play store during app refresh on a non rooted phone.

The place where he posted the screenshot from does not just show system apps. OP, are you able to uninstall the app through Settings -> Apps? That would tell you if it was installed as a system app or not.

No I was not. The uninstall option was not available. That's how I knew it was a system app.

Well, my concern then would be what someone could have done with root access. In theory they could have installed other applications, like potentially a keylogger.
I personally would get a replacement if my phone was really rooted when I received it.

I never said it was rooted, only that SuperSU was already installed. Anyone can install SuperSU from the Play Store, but it's useless without the SuperSU binary that goes along with it. I just thought it was an intersting find.

Not as a system app they can't. The phone either had to have been rooted at some point or it was flashed from a custom recovery. You can't install an app from the play store as a system app without root.

Right, this is what I meant. If it's installed as a system app then it is clear evidence that someone modified the system partition on your phone. That would concern me, personally.

Oh yeah good point... I hadn't thought about that. Now I am worried. I did perform a full reset, perhaps I should do a system wipe and reflash the stock img?

Yeah... it hadn't bothered me until this point. I'll be contacting Motorola today. Might be moot now since I'm legitimately rooted and unlocked, but I do still have a warranty.

I don't think he is saying that we shouldn't root our phones because companies disapprove. I think he is saying, don't root your phone if you want that particular app to work without issue....
I'm curious to know how the app checks whether the device is rooted. I see similar behavior with the new Android Market on my rooted Nook Color; Movies just don't show up, but I don't get a SuperUser request, or anything indicating the app is checking for the ability to gain root.

Are you sure its rooted? Rooted? Rooted?
I bet that the app can scan the installed apps and check for SU. I would check the permissions of the app and see if there is anything odd. If your running CM7 i thought a little while back they introduced the ability to block permissions for apps. Might start there.

[Q] My Xperia TX came pre-installed with SU?

Just found out today that that my xperia tx came pre-installed with SU app. I tried opening it and
Said "no su binaries installed..."
Has my phone been modified/rooted?
Should I ask for a replacement unit?
Can you uninstall the app? That app doesn't usually come pre installed so it sounds like it's either second hand or been tinkered with. Any other indications of modifications? If the su asp can't be uninstalled that means that somebody rooted and upgraded, lost their rooting ability and traded it in? Check for defects to make sure it's ship shape and factory reset to be on the safe side!

Hi, thanks for the info. I wouldn't want to try uninstalling it first as I would lose the evidence before showing
It to the retail store. Can you give me other ways to confirm whether my device has been tampered?

I mean super su app (android with cape logo)
Should I be alarmed?
Yes, super su suggests to me that it had indeed been rooted. what's the firmware on it? Don't uninstall it, just check if you can in the Sony launcher. If it says it's a system app and can't be uninstalled then it has been rooted. Anything else there that doesn't look stock?

Factory reset not working.. Ideas?

I'm rooted (VZW) and use most of the Xposed modules. I woke up this morning and tried to use touchless controls. Didn't work so I did some investigating. Noticed it was turned off so I turned it on. Didn't work. Rebooted then noticed that reboots turned touchless control off. I tried Google now and while it worked, I didn't hear the usual sound that plays once it's acknowledged "Google". From there I noticed I had no sound whatsoever. Bluetooth was on. I turned it off, sound came back but not touchless controls.
Last night I remembered trying to install themed Google keyboards. While it worked, it took uninstalling the stock Google keyboard, installing the one from Google play, uninstalling Google play version, then installing the themed apk. I had since backed up all my apps, meaning I've written over the stock keyboard. Now I don't really think this would effect touchless controls, since I can't seem to fix them, I figured I'd factory reset and see what happened. Unfortunately, it doesn't work through settings. Just reboots my phone. Any ideas? I've yet to try it through a stock recovery or something similar. I've yet to find answers on how that works on this phone (actually haven't searched yet).

If you rooted using PwnMyMoto then it has overwritten the stock recovery. Basically it writes an Android system without write protection on the recovery partition when you root. You will have to flash stock recovery back and then a factory reset will work.

I've searched for a possible cause for the touchless controls issue but to no avail. Have you heard anyone having these issues?

Excuse me for butting in. I've been checking out some threads for the Moto X on both the Q&A and General boards for some time and your the first person that has written about such an issue as far as I've seen. Very strange. Hopefully that factory reset works in your favor.

Please, butt in! I'm hoping to avoid going to stock recovery. Which I'm assuming requires unrooting. I was also having sound issues. No sound until I went into settings and went through ring tones. None would work, no sound. Until I cleared settings from recents and then went back into it and tried again. Then it would work. I began deleting all root apps. It was a module within Xposed. Not sure which but now sound works as it should. I've since deleted all root apps but still haven't fixed touchless controls. It almost seems as if the microphone for touchless isn't working? Aren't there two microphones on this device?

So you've removed Xposed and all modules? Have you rebooted the system since removing them? If I were in your position, I would want to completely unroot and start fresh because if it's a problem with the microphone, it's covered under warranty and you need to get a replacement.
You can follow this tutorial to return to stock, just make sure you download the correct version for your phone. If you're familiar with adb and fastboot, it may be easier to just fastboot flash recovery and system and that should return you to 100% stock unrooted.

Yes, rebooted so much thought I was going to wear out the power button lol. I've switched to my G2 to prepare to go to stock on the X. Was just hoping to avoid going to the VZW store, I really hate dealing those people. Loathe it.
I'm familiar with adb. Just need a good internet connection. I have to use hotspot for internet where I live and while we have TWRP on the G2, no bypass on wireless tether. I thought about trying the method I used on the X but I'm not savvy enough to know if that'll break something. .bak isn't always a sure thing.
Did you have a link to the stock file? I can search it but it looked like in your post you had it.
Edit: all these new phones forgot about the S4. There's my hotspot.
Thanks for help bro

You probably can't uninstall the app if it is in /system until you are S-OFF. But you can flash a stock ROM with it removed with an unlocked bootloader + custom recovery.

Yes /system is still write protected. Most ROMs will have all this bloatware removed.
Also unlock bootloader, then root and use your favorite app to freeze them until then.

Yes I suppose, Google apps and services doesn't affected by device system changes, it's "cloud" stored.

Rooting only gives you more permission to modify the system settings, it doesn't have any affect on apps.

In Malaysia, yes. Once you root, there's no centre that accepts free service if you root.
However, it's vary by country, some still accept some are not.
