[Q] Could you help me on getting LTE? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
This is Naomi. I got a unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 4 from T-Mo.
However, I did copied the right LTE APN setting from a AT&T LG G2 [Locked]. I cannot get any LTE connection since Dec.
Here's my chatting history with AT&T customer service.
Thank you for your patience! Your AT&T Representative will be with you shortly.
Welcome! You are now chatting with 'Joseph Belcher'
Naomi Minami: Hi, Joseph.
Naomi Minami: This is Naomi
Joseph Belcher: Hello, Naomi. I see that you need help resetting your connection with AT&T services
Naomi Minami: Yes.
Joseph Belcher: I can definitely assist you with that
Joseph Belcher: What is going on?
Naomi Minami: I've troubleshooted about it 4 times.
Joseph Belcher: Are you not getting a connection at all?
Naomi Minami: To me, I can't get LTE connection since Dec.
Naomi Minami: Another line can't get data since Nov.
Joseph Belcher: Are you able to get 4G
Naomi Minami: I was busy in Nov, so...
Naomi Minami: H+
Joseph Belcher: That is 4G
Naomi Minami: And.... 0.8Mbps Downlink
Naomi Minami: I'm talking 'bout LTE
Naomi Minami: And 0.8.......
Naomi Minami: I'm pulling down 37 Mbps from T-Mo
Naomi Minami: And this thing happened since Dec. 01
Joseph Belcher: Alright. I just wanted to make sure it was the LTE or the whole data connection.
Joseph Belcher: Is your phone from T-Mobile?
Naomi Minami: And when I was in Japan, I could get decent 105Mpsish
Naomi Minami: Unlocked
Naomi Minami: Factory unlocked
Joseph Belcher: Okay.
Naomi Minami: Started using it since Oct.
Naomi Minami: Was able to get LTE through Nov. and Oct.
Naomi Minami: So...
Naomi Minami: Do NOT tell me LTE is not capable or not guaranteed .
Joseph Belcher: Okay. Did anyone ever explain to you about unlocking a phone from a different carrier and using with us?
Naomi Minami: YES
Naomi Minami: I DID get LTE.
Naomi Minami: I went to a store and they talked 'bout it.
Naomi Minami: Cuz you folks reject unlocking my LG G2
Joseph Belcher: Right. I am just trying to say that we do not guarantee that you will have LTE all the time. But I will still look and make sure that everything is looked at to make sure
Naomi Minami: I do travel a lot with my prof.
Naomi Minami: Well, yeah. Not all the time..
Naomi Minami: I used to have LTE all the time back in Oct. and Nov.
Naomi Minami: Now......
Joseph Belcher: Right. I am looking into this
Naomi Minami: MMK.
Naomi Minami: Thank you.
Joseph Belcher: It looks like there was a case created yesterday about this issue and the expected resolution date is December 16, 2014 in the evening
Naomi Minami: =_____=
Naomi Minami: Man..
Naomi Minami: Could you please simply reset my data connection at first
Joseph Belcher: I can do that.
Naomi Minami: I'll give it a shot before I drop into the store again.
Joseph Belcher: You do not need to go into the store. There is a case filed for this issue. it will be take care of. The store cannot help you anyway
Naomi Minami: Otherwise I'll gather my friends to transfer 'bout 30 lines in our Dept. of ECE from AT&T to T-Mobile a real quick.
Naomi Minami: That's what I'm talking 'bout
Naomi Minami: Again, thank you, I appreciate it!
Joseph Belcher: The store is not a Technical Support place unless you go to a DSC. Then it is
Joseph Belcher: Is your number the one that ends in ____?
Naomi Minami: Yes.
Joseph Belcher: Thank you
Naomi Minami: _____________
Joseph Belcher: Thank you
Naomi Minami: And I'm the holder right seating in front of the computer and talking to you.
Joseph Belcher: I understand
Joseph Belcher: *understand
Joseph Belcher: Will you turn your phone off for me
Naomi Minami: Sure!
Naomi Minami: Off now
Joseph Belcher: Thank you
Joseph Belcher: Sweet
Naomi Minami: I simply swapped out the battery
Joseph Belcher: That works
Joseph Belcher: Alright. Turn the phone back on
Naomi Minami: Booting
Joseph Belcher: Alright
Naomi Minami: Should I turn on my data?
Joseph Belcher: Yes
Naomi Minami: Cool... No signal now
Naomi Minami: lol
Joseph Belcher: It will take a minute
Naomi Minami: Clarift that got the same AT&T LTE apn from AT&T phone. Now on 3G not even HSPA+
Naomi Minami: Haha..........
Joseph Belcher: I am going to check and see if the towers in your area are okay
Naomi Minami: Cool, another AT&T HTC m8 is getting LTE right nect to me.
Naomi Minami: 02115
Naomi Minami: HTC M8: 8.1Mbps Down
Naomi Minami: I got 0.2Mbps
Naomi Minami: loooool
Naomi Minami: T-Mobile : 41MBps.
Naomi Minami: Ping is 60 only
Joseph Belcher: The tower that you are connection only has a 3G connection. And most of the towers around you are 3G there is one that is H+
Naomi Minami: Okay, now H+
Naomi Minami: AT&T : 6MBps
Naomi Minami: Again, HSPA+ is 3.5G, not LTE
Naomi Minami: I'm a student majoring in Electrical Computer Engineering and Computer Science
Naomi Minami: So, do NOT simply copy and paste your answer
Joseph Belcher: The two closest towers next to you. One is 3G and one has a LTE. It is possible that you are not connecting to the one with the LTE
Naomi Minami: The HTC M8 right next to me got LTE
Joseph Belcher: Right. That phone may be connected to the other tower.
Naomi Minami: YEAH, please gimme the authorization to get into that tower
Naomi Minami: We're all postpaid users
Naomi Minami: All activated and registered in Champaign, IL
Joseph Belcher: I do not have that power. No one does. It is whatever your phone connects to. You can keep restarting your phone and see if it connects to the
Joseph Belcher: LTE
Naomi Minami: MMK, I got the record of our chatting history. I do obtain previous one as well
Naomi Minami: Cool, if that's your only response.
Naomi Minami: MMK, I got it.
Joseph Belcher: Plus your have a case filed for this problem and there will be a resolution on the 16th
Naomi Minami: .....
Joseph Belcher: The only thing you can try is getting a new SIM card for the phone and see if that will help it get to get the LTE connection
Naomi Minami: I do understand that you folks got more customers, but, at least, I'm okay with a slower speed since last year, Verizon tossed us to 3G
Naomi Minami: And this year, I got 0.2Mish
Naomi Minami: That's not cool anymore.
Naomi Minami: We're paying for reliable service.
Naomi Minami: And trustworthy customer service
Naomi Minami: And.......
So, what I should do now?
Any suggestions?
Thank you folks!
Best regards,
Naomi

Good luck getting people to read all that. Why don't you sum it up
BAD ASS NOTE 4

I read it all.
If you have have another AT&T SIM, try that in your phone and see what happens.

Post your APN settings and state what ROM you're using. Also post verification that you've been able to pull LTE on the exact same SIM in another phone by using the LTE Discovery app and comparing results of the app between phones. Report back what bands are being reported. If one phone pulls LTE on that SIM and another doesn't I'm not sure what AT&T can do about that.

You could follow their directions. Give them until Dec 16 when they promised to have it resolved. Then, follow up. You could also get the new sim or return the phone as defective. But it's unreasonable to insist that a tech guy on the phone connect you to a specific tower. Keep your expectations within the realm of the real world. Less frustration that way.

We can fix this easy. I got a few secrets for you.
1.) Use the below APN:
Name: AT&T LTE
APN: pta
Proxy: ~Not set~
Port: 80
Username: ~Not set~
Password: ~Not set~
Server: ~Not set~
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type:
APN type: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet
2.) Once you switch the that APN let it settle in for 10 min or so, then use the below app.

Nyc lte? (at&t)

Hey guys, has AT&T's LTE gone live in NYC yet? I keep reading things about their lte being "prematurely activated" on sunday, but Im not sure if this was for a breif testing or they are saying its up and full blown running.
I am about 20 miles from NYC and was really hoping to pick up the LTE signal when it goes live. Any thoughts? Am i too far away to pick up the signal anyway?
I am in NYC and all i see is 4G, no LTE...

Straight talk nexus 4

I got n4 today.I have straight talk with my nexus 4. I already had att sim. I got average speed of 5mb down and 1-.1.5 up. I know tmobile is suppose to be faster hpsa+ network. I've been with tmobile and att the speeds where i live and they are close to same for me. I bought tmobile sim just to see. I averaging 12-14 mb down and 2-3.5 mb up. I would recommend if go straight talk route get tmobile if you can. Check your coverage but tmobile is faster I live in a medium size market.

How u get a Straight Talk T-Mobile micro sim card??
Im on straight talk att and it works for what I need. T mobile really doesn't have anything out side of the interstate here in Kentucky.
Don't see that changing anytime soon.

T-Mobile has a better HSDPA network in urban areas, but based on many years with both carriers it is safe to say AT&T has a wider 3G coverage and better signal penetration in buildings.
I'm on Straight Talk using At&t sim and will be trying T-Mobile sim next.
Only complaint that I've had is once in a while I get an "access forbidden "message while using the web. I've researched it and have found no answer.

That sounds like a reason not to sign up with Solavei at all, not a reason to sign up with them quickly.
Also there's the fact that it's a pyramid scheme.
Dumb question here....
By trying out T-Mobile with Straight Talk and the N4 ... after cutting the SIM card it will automatically enable up to HSPA 42 speeds?(based on network connection)

Make sure your APN settings are correct, and then yes, you should get HSPA 42 when in available areas.
I've been on ST on my Atrix for a few months and don't have any complaints. TMobile's coverage map only shows 2g in my area or I would give that a try. Data speeds aren't the best but the money I save over ATT is incredible. I usually pull 2.5-3.5 mbps down and 1.0-1.5 mbps up. Speedtests can be a little funky because ST proxies all traffic through Chicago.
I'm also using straight talk and until last night, my speeds were just horrible ( 0.25 Mbps ) but then I called them an they reset my data settings. Now I pull between 2mb -5 mbps. :winning:

Remove the proxy from your APN. Solves this and for most it seems like the chance of throttling goes down.

I've been using straight talk AT&T with a T-Mobile phone, so Ive only been getting EDGE for the last 2 months. Anything will be an upgrade for me hahaha
Been using ST with a TMobile sim. Just checked the coverage for AT&T and found out they actually have 3g and 4g in my area! Just placed an order for an AT&T sim!
On tmobile i get 20 mbs in atlanta so tmobile rocks here.

Does AT&T not have up to 42HSPA? On ST?
Toggle airplane mode instead of reboot. You can also leave Proxy blank.
AT&T does not have HSPA+ 42 in their network.
Um, if you want prepaid on T-Mobile, why not just get their prepaid plan? Its only 100 minutes, but you also get 3 GB more data for only $30 a month

T-Mobile LTE Spotted in Brooklyn, NY!

Set APN for LTE along with other options and got it in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.
The network icon says "4G", 19Mb down, 8Mb up.I'm on CM10.1
Just an FYI for my Brooklyn people
Thanks for letting us know. A lot of LTE networks are being flipped on so we've made a specific thread for it here

AT&T data speeds Nexus 5

I was wondering what kind of data speeds are being seen by nexus 5 devices on AT&T LTE data network.
I've included an image of my speed test result, usually around that mark with full bars, drops down to between 8-15 Mbps when on 2-3 bar.
located in the central valley, California
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
That's about the speeds I reach here in Philadelphia suburbs. Unfortunately though in downtown no matter how many bars I have speed drops drastically, possibly due to amount of people with cell phones and buildings.
I rarely drop to 3g but when I its around 4-5mbps download which is considerably better than what I had with Verizon in Philadelphia.
I usually get between 6 and 10 in Salem Oregon
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 2
Coming from an S4
I get pretty close to the same speeds.. I get horrible service at home with the N5, usually 1-2 bars, and average 8MB down, 7 up. Signal strength was better on my S4. In an area where signal is good, I've reached 60MB numerous times...

I get about 30mpbs down in middle GA. Not too bad.
Atlanta during rush hour traffic a free days ago.
Orlando, FL here and I've been getting terrible speeds. Less than 4 down with 3+ bars. One time I was getting full bars LTE and I was getting like 0.5mbps down. I'm about ready to switch to T-Mobile.

anything over 2mbps with decent ping is honestly plenty fast for me.
Currently 12-13 in center of Silicon Valley - 2-3 in the suburbs of the same. I've called ATT to be sure I'm provisioned on the correct APN and plan for LTE.
What's sucked is that ATT has obviously either turned off or not built out capacity in more heavily residential areas in SV, perhaps with the assumption that people just use wifi at home. I'd had a solid 23 at work and 18 in the suburbs first few months of 2014.
Just for grins, here are the settings I got from ATT about a year ago:

do the speedtest and then immediately load XDA.
it might be an XDA problem. XDA does not use much badnwidth

I will say that using Orlando's server seems to give very inaccurate speeds. When i use that server i get around 15-17 .
I usually use Maccleny* when i do my tests here in FL. (** not sure how it is exactly spelled)
Best speed I've ever gotten on AT&T. Went to the store and copied the apn in the nexus6.

Sprint Spark network

Ok, so another question. I live in a Sprint Spark network coverage area. Since I have a Nexus 6, it does not have that little spinning sun icon which shows Sprint Spark. I know these phones are "tri-band" which is 25/26/41.
Is LTE 25 and Spark 41 ? What is 26 band ? Or does Sprint Spark tie in all these data bands (and shut off voice) ?
It's ambiguous as to how Sprint Spark network works. I assume once you hit data, it toggles between 25/26/41 rather than 25+26+41. I called Sprint and talk to many different reps about this issue and they are totally clueless. LOL.

Band 26 is 800mhz and is for building penetration
Band 25 is 1900mhz and is for general LTE ( in some areas there are actually 2x Band 25 carriers)
Band 41 is 2500mhz and is where the speed of sprint network comes into play ( in most areas there are 2x Band 41 carriers)
On sprint the Nexus 6 will only connect to one of these 3 bands or CDMA for voice. Cannot do simultanious voice and data.
Generally the network will put you on the band that is least congested and you are able to actually connect to.
I suggest you visit s4gru.com if you really want to learn about and understand the sprint network.

Thanks for the info. That is helpful. Why can the phone not connect to CDMA for voice, then using one of the 3 bands simultaneously for data ? How does this differ from the old set up where you could use LTE and voice simultaneously ?
I don't remember the name of the chip that enables this, but it was removed from Sprint phones years ago. The last phone (that I know of) that was capable of doing it was the Samsung GS3 and the HTC Evo 4G LTE. Not sure if the HTC One M7 could do it, too....
Anyway...Sprint has to deploy Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for us to use phone and Data simultaneously again. There are workarounds (Hangouts caller, for example), but it drops if you get a phone call. Also, I haven't found a way to direct phone calls to Hangouts, versus the default phone route.

you could do the sprint/google voice integration and always use the hangouts dialer. it messes with SMS a little, but other than that it works fine.

If you want to keep track of what band your connected to then snag this app. Typically I am on Band 25 or 41 indoors and band 41 consistently outdoors. That is the Indianapolis area though, your results will vary depending on where you are.

Thanks. Its funny that you mentioned Indianapolis. I actually used to live in Indianapolis until early 2014. I worked downtown near the Indian's stadium off Washington St and lived near Castleton Square Mall. I've noticed 41 connects in LA County, however; in Orange County it seems to be spotty despite the Sprint Spark map showing total coverage. Is all of Indianapolis full integrated into 41 now and the surrounding areas (Avon, Carmel, Greenwood), or just within the 465 loop ?
Pretty much all of it is Band 41 carrier aggregation. For us nexus 6 users that just means we get two band 41 carriers to use. Newer phones can actually combine them together for faster speeds. I have to go pretty far out of the city to lose 41. I'm in my bedroom on my phone typing this and B41 is connected. I live in Noblesville.

So you don't connect to 26? That band is just there to help building penetration? My connection right now says 1xRTT and eHRPD? Is this 3G?
