how to
safe mode
safe_mode_androidAndroid is a relatively stable mobile operating system, but every now and then, performance issues arise. Safe mode is a great tool that you can use to troubleshoot these issues. Safe mode boots your phone running only the apps that came with the phone – that means no third-party apps. Therefore, if your phone runs without an issue when you’re in safe mode, it’s a pretty good bet that the problem isn’t system related, and instead a third party app you downloaded.
Click through the break to see how you can enable safe mode to test if it’s a system problem or a third-party problem.
Unfortunately, not all phones have the same method to enter safe mode. Most Jelly Bean devices use the first method below, but some devices with older versions of Android and some newer devices (like the Galaxy S 4 and HTC One) use the alternate method further down the page.
Method 1 (most Jelly Bean devices)
1. Hold down the physical power button on your device.
2. Long-press the “Power off” option that appears.
device_options_safe_mode
3. A dialog box asking you if you want to reboot to safe mode may pop up. Tap OK.
(Note: If the box doesn’t appear, go on to the alternate method.)

4. When the phone reboots, you should see a “Safe Mode” watermark at the botom left of the screen, to let you know that you are in fact in safe mode.

Alternate Method (some older versions of Android and some Jelly Bean phones)
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Once your phone is off, turn it on by pressing the power button.
3. As your phone is booting, hold down both the volume up and volume down buttons (yes, both) and keep them held.
4. Once your phone has booted, you should see a “Safe Mode” watermark at the botom left of the screen, to let you know that you are in fact in safe mode.
Note: If the alternate method also doesn’t work, you can try holding down menu instead of volume up and down while booting.
In safe mode, while you can’t use third party apps, you can uninstall them. So if your phone is giving you problems as bad as freezing and not letting you uninstall apps, you can uninstall the problem app/apps in safe mode. In addition, if you need to, you can backup your data or factory reset your device in safe mode .
To exit safe mode, you just restart your device as you normally would.
Happy troubleshooting!
it helped me i hope it helps you if your looking for a solution besides a full wipe
None worked. Anyone else

Hello all,
Maybe that will be a bit helpful, I've discovered SAFE MODE.
When I changed back shell in one of mine HTC Raiders, I left protecting tape on side buttons,
what means they were pushed-in all the time during powering up.
I was a bit surprised when watermark SAFE MODE came up in bottom left corner of my screen.
1. Pull battery out the phone.
2. Press power button and in the same time press and hold both volume buttons.
3. Hold both volume buttons down till you will see your home screen.
4. To exit SAFE MODE normally reboot phone.
I do not know what we can do in that mode yet.
But I think is hidden mode.
see screenshots.
Yeah I got this too on my att vivid I am confused as to what this actually is for
Edit: I am also on 4.0.3 ics
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I've used Safe Mode on other Android devices to uninstall apps that were causing force close loops (you know, boot the device, app force closes, restarts, force closes, never letting you get past a force close box). All it does is boot the phone without launching third-party apps.

hi guys found a little secret reboot into safe mode option in stock 4.3
if you hold power button until the power off option appears then hold your finger on shut down and rotate the screen to horizontal , it switches to saying:
"reboot into safe mode? all apps disabled until rebooted again"
nice little trick to determined if your apps are causing lag.:good:

Fixed that for ya.
You don't need to rotate screen, just hold/tap a text a little bit longer.

Hi, chismay...
There are a few half secret undocumented key presses in Android... and you've just stumbled upon one of 'em. Though you can skip the rotate screen part of it.
Two others that I know of, which are sort of half known...
Long press the Home Button in any app, and it will bring up a circular Google Button, swipe up to this button, and it fires up Google Search/Google Now. Very useful if, whilst in the middle of Temple Run, you want to Google the nearest pizza delivery service.
If you have the AOSP browser installed... in the browser, long press on the Back Button, and it brings up the Bookmarks/History/Saved Pages screen. This seems to work on any Android device running the AOSP browser. Sadly, however, it doesn't work with Chrome.
--------------------------------
If I remember correctly, Safe Mode was introduced with Jellybean 4.1. I became aware of it, quite accidentally, whilst running a Custom Jellybean 4.1.2 ROM on my Advent Vega about a year ago.
It's very useful, as you say, for identifying and then uninstalling potentially rogue apps, that might be interfering with the normal running of the tablet... as all user installed apps are temporarily suspended.
The only problem with it is, upon rebooting your tablet again normally, you tend to loose your widget placements... which can be a bit of a nuisance if you have several widgets, and each one has to be re-configured again afterwards. Very time consuming.
Although it's never happened to me, a rogue app could theoretically prevent the tablet from booting properly. In such a scenario, you can access Safe Mode from a fully shut down state, as follows...
QUOTE: "From a cold start boot (press & release Power button), wait 2 seconds after the B&W Google (bootloader) splash screen appears, then press and hold Vol-Down button until the normal OS boot is fully completed (lock screen or home screen appears)."

This requires a degree of precision timing, but it does work on the Nexus 7... and is very similar to how I access Safe Mode on my Samsung Galaxy S3, as the long press on the Power Off option doesn't work as it does on the Nexus 7.
Anyway... just some thoughts.

cool i didnt know about the safe reboot from complete shut down, good to know:good:
I went to the beach recently with the Xperia Z1 C6903, and after coming back from the beach, the camera on the phone keeps on opening by itself.
I then decided to reboot my phone, through using the power off, turning it back on method, only to discover my phone is now in "safe mode", which disabled me from using my third party apps.
I then proceeded to search the web for a solution; using the clear cache (volume up + power button), and the red button inside the sim card slot, to which none of them worked.
After this, the phone sometimes cannot operate correctly, as the power button is sometimes disabled (as well as the volume down button). The power button issue can be fixed through the red button inside the sim card, however the volume down button does not seem to work.
I tried factory reset, nothing seemed to have happen apart from me losing all my data and apps.
I tried to flash the stock rom, which I have in place on my phone atm, again, through flashtool, but did not seem to get an answer as safe mode is still on, and the volume down button seems to be dead.
Upon further investigation, I realised that the camera function is also affected by the safe mode, as the camera cannot focus on objects, and the camera button on the Z1 is working, but cannot take a picture (can semi-press and use camera's flash via this way).
I am now leaving my phone to dry, assuming that there is still water inside the phone which is preventing the normal function of the volume down button as well as the camera (and sometimes the power) button.
If anyone has a solution, please respond, and :fingers-crossed: I may have this fixed without going to the Sony service store.
Never take phone to beach...Salt +metal= you know the combo
Try to flash full FTF to see if the software is the problems or just open the phone
Or send it to Sony..........
Shutdown the normal way, then turn on.
Safe mode will disappear.
Never heard that the phone were stuck in safe mode even after a full wipe.
i have the exact same issue ,is there any solution please ?
Same exact problem
I have exactly the same problem, if there is any way to help please post it.
uPlease help,
I just tried to root my Asus memo pad 7 (Not HD) but it installed or activated a Demo Mode so a pop up message appears every time I block the tablet, and unistalls everything, everytime I reboot the tablet. I tried to wipe data but unsuccessful.
I got frustrated trying to find a solution.
Hey there. This is a common issue and it was already addressed, but I will try to answer anyway:
Once you activated the Demo mode, you'll have to get out of it by pressing the back button for more than 10 seconds. It will ask a password and you should enter 741603. After this, the device will reset itself to factory settings and you will loose everything. You cannot avoid this factory reset once you've activated the Demo mode.
To root the device, get the RootZenFone v1.4.6.4r from here. Install the app and follow the instructions exactly like they are written:
1. Forget the WiFi network you're connected on and shut down WiFi.
2. Open the app.
3. Read all the stuff. Twice.
4. Press the Root me (or whatever) button. The Demo mode will activate, but don't panic, it is normal. If you proceed with caution and don't do any stupid thing, it will work.
5. Wait 10 seconds (count to 10 using "one thousand" or "mississippi").
6. Reboot the device (long press the power button and select reboot).
Good luck!
I have same problem but i don't know when I must press back button. I try it on home screen but nothing happened
I has it it on my memo 8 gnu I don't know how to remove it
I have upgraded my Asus 176CX to Android 5.0. Although I like the new version, the responses inside the applications (and mainly simple games) is not good. The start time of the applications is 2-3 times slower than the older and slower Asus MemoPad 7 HD!
Any ideas how to fix that?
Mine too. Have you tried factory reset without automatic restore?
I did it and now it's much faster, almost as much as before the update. The game's still stuttering quite a bit but not as laggy as before.
The main problem I have is the screen seems to have lower contrast than in 4.4.2 and sometimes the colour just goes washed out and then return to normal. Especially when switching apps. But sometimes it just does that for no obvious reason.
Also the amount of bloatware just went through the roof and I can't disable or delete them like before.
To anyone passing by: Hold on for a bit. As far as I'm concern the only good thing I can find in this update is native support of USB Audio.
What do you mean by "Automatic Restore"?
Also, after the factory reset, how did you re-installed the apps? I don't want to loose my data, I have some apps (not just games), like for example my Lufthansa app with all my data and Boarding Passes etc that I really need.
The bloatware is a lot. I cannot disable most of it. One of the good things: The backup application.
In Backup & reset you'll have 2 choices called
- Back up my data
- Automatic restore - which will restore your apps along with settings after factory reset. But to be sure that it deletes all files that might cause the device to slow down I'll disable it.
And yes, after factory reset with this option disable you will have to reinstall all your apps and all your data will be gone. So make sure you back up everything you need before doing it.
WARNING: If you have important data like boarding pass in your airliner app then I wouldn't suggest you do the factory reset because even if you enable both "backup my data" and "automatic restore" there's still some risk that data in some apps might not come back.
Back to the issue of device slowing down, another way to fix it is format cache partition. This is the safest way to fix the problem without losing all your data, apps or any settings but I really can't find a way to do it.
Edit: Found it!
Here's how you do it:
- Turn off your device.
- Hold down "volume down" then press power button until it turns on.... at this point continue holding the volume down button.
- After you enter fastboot mode, release the volume down button.
- Use volume up or down to navigate the menu, select "RECOVERY" then press power to choose.
- It will show the belly up droid, don't panic.
- Press volume up and power simultaneously, hold them down for about a second then release them. If this doesn't work try holding down a bit longer. You will get in to recovery menu.
- Use volume up or down to navigate the menu, select "wipe cache partition" then press power to choose.
- Wait until it says "Cache wipe complete." on the bottom of the screen.
- Choose "reboot system now".
Try this first and if it doesn't fix your problem I'm afraid you'll have to factory reset your tablet.
