Okay so I am confused... I have a Telus XT1097, There is a xt1097 sold in the US as well as XT1095 (PE from motomaker) Mexico and Brazil also have XT1097 both have been updated OTA. In the US everyone but AT&T have been updated, Canada has yet to see an update but what is the difference between all these phones? Is it sim lock (Telus) or sim lock and boot loader lock (also Telus but unlock able) It would seem that other than region, they should all be equal no?
The hardware in the XT1095 and XT1097 is identical between all models/variations. The firmware is what is different between them. Motorola calls the true "pure" version the XT1095, all of the carrier branded models are the XT1097. Each of the carrier branded models has unique programming for the country, provider etc. The sim lock and bootloader lock are selected by the provider and then Motorola programs the phones to match what they want(well the bootloader lock is handled by a master server but the providers still determine if it will be allowed or not).

That is not true, as I have a brazilian XT1097 bought directly from Motorola and it has no carrier brand or bloatware.
As far as I know, the difference between the Brazilian XT1097 "bought directly from Motorola" and the XT1095 "Pure Edition" are the 4G bands it uses, as both have unlockable bootloaders.

I didn't say they had to have carrier bloatware or branding. In your case it is an XT1097 because it has still been customized for your country - custom modem files to enable only the bands needed in your country. The hardware is still the same.

Surely the modem hardware differs between the various models. I think there must be at least 4 different variations.

Thanks for the information. I am in Canada (on Telus) so that means that I am able to buy the pure edition direct from Motorola.com/us (I have an american PO Box) and will be able to take full advantage of TELUS LTE as long as I flash telus radio?

You won't be able to flash the telus radio and don't need to, the stock radio/modem will work just fine with Telus LTE across the country. I also replied on HF.

i bought a south american XT1053 on ebay assuming i could unlock the bootloader. when i got it, it had a nextel sim card ready to be installed. got an at&t one from my carrier and it's on LTE but motorola does not allow unlocking the bootloader. back on ebay it goes...
while i have it i'm happy to look into the bands, though i'd imagine it's the same as the t-mobile xt1053 and the gsm dev edition.
Very strange. According to motorola site all Latin America models have unlockable bootloader. Can you please check supported bands?

How do I check supported bands? All I can find in Settings is that I seem to currently be on LTE band 13.
Yeah, that page might imply all of Latin America can unlock their bootloaders but I certainly can't. Got my OEM unlock code via fastboot, and the unlock site says my device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking. The box it came in clearly says XT1053. The label is in spanish. The SIM card says Nextel. In settings it shows the System version is 139.7.30.ghost_row.NII.en.MX. I think NII is basically Nextel (NII also shows up the motorola site as the carrier for the device it sees I have), a carrier in Mexico.

Maybe my situation is a fluke. Maybe something funky with this device but it sure looks like a regular Mexico Nextel device. The box, it's contents and the device all point to a carrier unlocked Mexico Nextel Moto X. Works fine on AT&T LTE but since I can't unlock the bootloader, the only benefit to me is the lack of carrier branding. FWIW I got mine on ebay from http://www.ebay.com/usr/marisolmachado and he was a great seller. Exactly as described, quick shipping, responsive to all of my questions. Just can't unlock the bootloader (which I didn't ask them about).

This seller also sells Nextel model. Be aware
Just wanted to add that I just checked and mine is not bootloader unlockable either. I have the same Nextel version as the previous poster. This is very unfortunate and now I question whether we will see the camera update. Or when. Darn, had high hopes for this one.

Just a thought...I tried unlocking the bootloader many times and the motorola site told me I could not...after searching, someone here said that you can't even have spaces in the unlock code...so be very sure that you paste all the numbers and to not leave spaces after them as I did and unlocked fine. BTW I tried like 3 times before and the 4th time I didn't paste the numbers, I just did it manually. Hope that helps.

I found an XT1053 on eBay with a spanish user manual. Bought it assuming the bootloader would be unlockable on the motorola site but I was wrong. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215 lists the supported devices but "Latin America" doesn't get too specific.
Anyone know how we can determine which devices can be bootloader unlocked? I'd hate to go through this again. Maybe I should have just spent the extra $100 for a t-mobile version... I sure do like the lack of carrier branding on this device.
A better way to answer would be:

Sadly, it's not that simple. This is not an AT&T (XT1058) or Verizon (XT1060) but an XT1053. I believe it's a Nextel Moto X. It has a spanish manual, defaulted to spanish when setting it up, has an unused SIM card that says Nextel.
It was not able to be bootloader unlocked on the motorola site.

Cool. I thought I saw it with a T-Mobile logo on the back somewhere online but I could certainly be mistaken. There are no carrier apps installed on the T-Mobile version?
I think I'll just resell this one and buy the tmo or dev edition new straight from Motorola. Don't want to mess with eBay over and over trying to get one whose bootloader can be unlocked. I thought it was "not AT&T or Verizon" too but now I see that's not the case and it may just be a north american-centric view of the situation...

double check, but I'm 99% sure. they weren't even selling it in stores or on their own website as far as I know. no physical branding or software I'm pretty sure.
I'm looking to buy a used Moto X, and am trying to figure out which Moto X's receive updates from Motorola and not a carrier. I need a GSM phone and will be using a TMobile or AT&T MVNO in the US. I don't trust the carriers to continue pushing out Motorola's updates, so I'd rather just get them from Motorola directly.
My understanding is that the new dev versions and the retail, full-priced versions from Motorola will get updates. How do I identify those on the secondary market? Is it as simple as - if the back doesn't have a carrier logo, it gets updates from Motorola? Should I only be looking for an XT1053 and not an XT1058?
Looked in the FAQs and searched, but couldn't find an answer.
Thanks!
I could be wrong, but I don't think any of them get the update OTA straight from motorola. Even the dev and unlocked GSM's roms are labeled as T-Mobile retail. However, if you have one of those devices and an unlocked bootloader, you can download the system images straight from moto's website and easily install the updates yourself. So either version works in your case. The only difference is that you lose your warranty if you don't have a dev edition.

If you want to be able to use your phone on multiple carriers, definitely buy the XT1053.
The XT1053 comes bootloader-unlockable and sim-unlocked. If you buy the XT1058 AT&T variant, the bootloader cannot be unlocked (unless you are lucky enough to get a code from the china middleman), and the phones are SIM-Locked to AT&T (unusable on T-Mobile). Some have reported success getting a SIM-Unlock code from online sellers, but others have reported that they tried all of the online sellers and none of the unlock codes work.
If you want a phone that will 100% be usable on any GSM carrier, buy the XT1053.
All variants should [eventually] receive the updates.
Don't know about XT1053 but I got the XT1052 and it came with unlock-able bootloader too, and of course all GSM SIM cards are working.

In addition to what That Ain't Falco!!! said..
The ATT XT1058 doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS(1700/2100mhz). When T-Mobile first launched their HSPA/HSPA+ network that is the frequency they used. While they are working to upgrade and re-farm their 1900Mhz spectrum to HSPA/HSPA+, in areas where they haven't yet completed that, the XT1058 would only get EDGE when using it on T-Mobile
While the GSM Unlocked XT1053 is sim unlocked out of the box and bootloader unlockable, unlocking the bootloader does void the warranty. The Dev Edition XT1053 can't be customized (comes as 32gig, black face, woven white back, silver accents and says Dev Edition on the back), but unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty. But in reality, the hardware "inside" is exactly the same, and they use the same roms/updates.
If you want to root, its easiest/best if you can unlock the bootloader.
Great answers, guys. Thanks a ton for taking the time. I'm definitely going to look for the XT1053.
The only thread I see is for the Sprint version. Is there a thread for the XT1053? I am using Consumer Cellular (uses the ATT network.)
Will be traveling to Canada next month and would like to have the phone available if the cost is reasonable (Consumer Cellular advises to leave the phone off when out of the country due to high roaming costs, $1-$3/minute). Are the Ebay providers typically reliable?

Is there any "fine print" at the bottom on the back? If so, that would say the model number. As @samwathegreat said, every XT1053 we've seen so far has been SIM UNlocked right out of the box.
And if your carrier is using ATT's network, are you sure its not an XT1058? If its an XT1058 then, yes its likely sim locked. In that case either your carrier would need to give you the SIM unlock code (aka network unlock), or you'd have to buy it from a 3rd party seller.
(The XT1058 supports one or two LTE frequencies that ATT uses which the XT1053 doesn't).

I can partially answer that. the xt1050 is a device sold by 'regional carriers'. for example, I have an xt1050 but which was sold by alltel. there are other xt1050 models sold by Inland Cellular, Illinois Valley Cellular etc. Basically the xt1050 was the model sold by very small cellular companies. I can't vouch for other models besides the one i have but my alltel xt1050 was able to be unlocked officially via moto website. I was also able to install twrp on it.
But it gets more complex. There are apparently different firmware versions for each different xt1050 model. see this page here https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/94927/p/30,6720,8696 (under ACG Regional Carriers). Now what, if anything, is different between the different firmware numbers... I've no idea.
Finally, according to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56803257&postcount=60 the xt1050 actually shares the same fcc number as the xt1060. This is pretty much all the info I've gathered.

I have found that XT1060 means Verizon carrier - read it from a thread on somewhere of the 4rum.
I am owning that one using out of the US and everyting works fine for me now.
Rooting is just like playing around with the Rom there is nothing else.
A custom rom lacks Moto features, such as: active display, spotty, etc - a big dÃappointment!
Android L is pretty good with material design, but that is the only thing.

All Verizon LTE phones come SIM unlocked, meaning that they work fine on GSM carriers. The only problem that might show up is that LTE bands will likely not match, meaning the device is limited to HSPA+.
As for which is easier to root, the Verizon one will not be easy to root unless it's a developer edition. The XT1050 might be easily rootable, but there may be trouble using it on GSM carriers. It is not the ATT version of the X, rather it is the version used for smaller regional US carriers. The ATT version of the X is the XT1058 (also the version number for the Rogers Canada model). If I remember right, there are a few threads of people having problems SIM unlocking the XT1050 to use with carriers other than US Cellular (but you might need to search that info out).

Yes, I am referring to x1058, respectivelly At&T, I have no knowledge over a 1060, as the supplier only does 1058 and the Verizon one. With that being said, and by you marking Verizon bootloader unlockable, I guess I have no choice but to go with the AT&T and get a sunrise right after. ****e!
ps/ The dealer does infact says the Verizon one comes sim unlocked, but still the lack of customizability renders it rather unattractive in my mind!

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The XT1060 is the Verizon Moto X model number, the XT1050 is not. I believe the XT1050, which is used for regional carriers, has CDMA capabilities like the Verizon model (again, the XT1060). If it's still on 4.4.2, the Verizon model can be unlocked via Sunshine as well, but your best bet for compatibility is the AT&T 1058, since it has the widest range of LTE bands. Good luck!
