It happened to me too, the only way is to flash a stock based rom through flashtool, then flash cm11 and then cm12. I suggest you to flash CrystalPA though and wait for a more stable cm12 release. CrystalPA is just the smoothest 4.4.4 rom out there, especially if you love mobile gaming, it has the best ram management!

Pull your battery out. Run the flashtool, click the lightning button and flash in fastboot (the first option) and then select the ftf file for 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 (there's a thread in the development section with the FTF files).
Flash (and leave the boxes as they are ) --> Once it prepares the phone for flashing, it will ask you to to connect the phone in fastboot mode.
DONT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON
Hold the volume down button while plugging in the cable. It should flash.
Let me know if it worked.

fastboot is the second option in my flashtool menu, which should i choose?
ps and should I leave battery out?
THANK YOU DJpeesh,
you saved my day:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
followed your instructions ( 1e option flashmode with battery still removed ) an successfuly flashed phone.
I think it went wrong when I flashed boot.img file from cmw recovery with fastboot from cl when phone was also still connected throw Flashtool.
I use all linux tools (flashtool, adb, fastboot , doomlord-rooting kit)
ps By your opinion, is it still save to follow intructions on the link in my first post to get my xperia zR on latest firmware and have root access?
Jackman17. Try updating through Sony update service and then use vroot (can send you thread link later).
I'm running 4.2.2 and I'm rooted.

Go to C:/Flashtool/drivers
Then instal drivers located there, it worked for me when I first used flastool.

Errm i mean that my phone doesn't stay in flashmode long enough for me to install the drivers into the phone
Well if you have done everything right with flashtool's installation, then you're doing something wrong while flashing.
If you want to flash a new firmware into your phone you must plug-in your device in "normal" mode (not flash mode), then:
1) Execute flashtool
2) select the "flash device" icon
3) select "flashmode" option, click "OK"
4) select firmware you want to flash (make sure which options you want to be checked/unchecked)
5) click on "flash" button
This is when Flastool will ask you to
->Unplug device
->Power off
->Press Vol- button and connect while pressing (this is flash mode)
Give it a try, also read a little bit about Flashtool procedures.
Cheers

Have you tried to connect to pc, and type adb reboot recovery (with adb installed on pc)?
Firstly download and install minimal adb
Download doomlord's adb drivers..
Then if on windows 8
Disable driver signature enforcement and then install the adb drivers in doomlord's thread.
(Fast boot drivers, flashmode drivers and viskan drivers)
Then extract boot.img of your favourite ROM (which has a recovery) and copy paste it in the folder where you installed minimal adb.
First connect the USB cable to the PC.
Restart your phone by hard reset and as soon as it shows Sony logo, keep pressing power button plus volume down.
Now a blue light will be coming.
Then
Hold shift and right click there and open command promt here..
Make sure the blue light is still there in the illumination bar and type in
fastboot flash boot boot.img
This will install a new boot.img which has a recovery
And then restart
Then go into recovery and flash your favourite ROM...
Hope I helped..
This method worked for me many times...

xperia z1 update to lp (flashmode without volume buttons)

EDIT: I'm now rooted + CWM recovery touch installed, so I think I will go for custom rom instead of the official. Thanks XDA for the information, please close thread, if anyone wants some help with this, let me know by PM
Hello All
any ideea if I can update the xperia z1 firmware that I downloaded with xperifirm without having access to flashmode through volume buttons?
I am on stock 4.4.4 firmware, with locked bootloader, without root.
i can enter in fastboot through adb terminal, flashtool detects the phone, drivers are installed.
is it possible to install the xperifirm downloaded firmware like this? or I should just wait for the OTA update?
OR:
since I want to play a little with the phone I was thinking that I could root it / flash custom recovery also but I think those need the buttons to be usable ...
but if you consider that I can manage with just fastboot mode and drivers installed to install cyanogenmod or something like that, please point me to the right tutorial.
P.S. in case you wonder - I won't repair the phone, i will move to z4 when available, but still, I want to have the z1 software updated
thank you all
have a nice day
