Screen Stays Off When Receiving Calls - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 32GB Nexus 6 T-Mobile version with an AT&T sim. It's stock ROM LRX22C and not rooted.
When receiving phone calls sometimes the phone screen does not come on. I can hear the ringer and the phone vibrates, but the screen will not turn on. I have to push the power button, unlock the phone, and then answer the call. Other times the ringer doesn't ring, and the phone only vibrates, with the screen off also. I've already shut off Ambient Display as that was causing my phone to reboot and shut down.
Any other thoughts or solutions?

Only happened to me because glass screen protector was interfering with proximity sensor. Removed it and never happened again. Unsure if that is your problem...

Yeah I figured it has to do with the proximity sensor but I don't use a screen protector.

Anyone else with this issue?

Yea, I've had the same issue happening from time to time. Also stock and not rooted. I do have a glass screen protector, but always have and never had this problem before.

This issue doesn't happen not only with tempered glass but also with normal screen guards too (sometimes). If you're not using screen protector, the I assume that there's some issue with proximity sensor

[Q] Unable to unlock screen while call in progress.

Hi All,
I have a sim free One and the problem i have is I am unable to unlock the screen while a call is in progress. I can press the power button to turn the screen on but if I try to unlock the screen , it goes off again so I am pretty stuck with a phone unusable during a call. I ll have to tell the person on the other end to disconnect in order that I can access the phone again, I cant use speaker phone while making notes or reading out from the phone.
Should I send this back please?
Thanks in advance.
Sounds like something is covering the proximity sensor. You got a case or screen protector on it that might be covering that?

I dont have a case neither do I have a screen protector on.
Have you installed any brightness mods or anything like that which mught be misbehaving?
Or any programs which have functions for customising the brightness, power etc?
If no, then it sounds like your proximity sensor might be a bit over sensitive, and firing off all the time thinking it's next to your head.

proximity sensor issues? att varient

Anyone notice their proximity sensor is very flaky?
The screen will not shut off when I close my wallet cover over it. It will shut off when I start talking on the phone, but then will not "wake" when I move it away to hang up. I actually couldnt find anyway to wake it up so i just waited until the other side hung up (it was a recorded msg).
Any ideas? I may just shut off the proximity sensor and wait till I can swap it in store. Of course this was right after i installed a tempered glass screen .... would that impact it at all??thx!

It seems that certain brands of tempered glass screen protectors are causing the same issue that you describe.

My tempered glass has a cutout for the 2 sensors on the left, are there any sensors on the right of the speaker? My proximity sensor also is not working. I will probably return my tempered glass also if this is the case...
This is happening to me and I don't have a screen protector. It's really getting annoying.
I'm having issues as well.... Not using any screen protector or whatsoever...
Yeh same here.. Looks like the sensor is maybe too sensitive. Hope sw can fix this.
+1 for the issue.
Cannot hang up after a call because the screen is black. Have to push the power button to wake it up first.
No screen protector.

I just restored a backup of the original rom and the problem went away. So it's probably an issue with cm. Was on cm nightly from 01-13-2014
Did you try going to settings , accessibility , power button ends call, toggle that on and off.
After completing the above mentioned step. Reboot your phone and try making a call. I hope the issue get resolved.
I tried this step on an unrooted phone, which was recieved just yesterday.
I got this fix from some other thread.
Is there a way to turn off proximity sensor without rooting? Looked through setting and must have missed it. Thanks in advance.
Still having this issue as well. I tried toggling the power button option then restarting my phone, it seems to help for a very short period of time (few hours maybe). I have tried several different screen protectors, the most recent ones having a cut out for the sensor and there is a decent gap between the two. Reloaded my phone several times and installed 5.0.1
The sensor doesn't really work to turn on the display when I go to pickup the phone and is spotty when making a call. In the first minute or so of the call, I can take the phone away from my head and it will register, illuminating the screen, after that it stops working.
I can't understand how it could be the screen protector at this point, it's no where close to obstructing the sensor.
Guess it's time to send this thing back. I must be nuts because I keep trying this power button suggestion and it just doesn't work for me longer than a few hours.
Same here, using a plastic rinkage screen protector no bubbles in it and the edge falls a good few MM from the sensor.
CM12 nightly builds still do it I'm on the 2/19th build with Franco kernel.
Best solution is get rid of the junk and get a Note 4. Mine is such a crap phone. It doesn't even do anything special except be big.
Hi,
Just to tell that I've got this pb since I installed the Spigen crystal protection, not even a tempered glass.
Before that I still had the original cheap film you get when you unbox, with the white corner.. the crystal is really nicer but it screws the sensor...
I believe it is software related. I have a tempered glass screen protector that does not cover the proximity sensor. I have noticed that about 60% of the time the screen does not turn back on when I move the phone away from my head. It seems to happen more when the phone call is longer than one minute. I also had a tempered glass protector that covered the sensor and had the same behavior. I did use an app to test the proximity sensor and with both screen protectors it worked 100% of the time using the app.

[Q] Nexus turns screen off when receiving a call CM12.1

Hi Everyone,
Whenever I'm on my phone, my screen turns off the moment before its starts vibrating for a phone call, and it takes approximately 6-7 seconds for it to turn back on. This did not happen on stock software, but has been happening since CM12 and still occurs on CM12.1. I don't think its my proximity sensor as this does not happen during a call, only when receiving a call.

I am having the exact same problem. I thought it was the proximity sensor due to the fact that I recently had my broken screen replaced. I can use the volume key mod to end a call but cannot pick up a call. Very discouraging..
Yes, can confirm on nightly 01052015, but apparently it's a stock issue as well: htt ps://product forums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/nexus-6/mIRwBP4Hx_Y%5B1-25%5D
Do you have a screen protector on your screen as well? I found out that for me tapping on the proximity sensor wakes up the screen with a bit of luck.

I do have a screen protector on but its no where close to the sensors/camera. This issue only occurs when I'm in CM12/12.1. I have the double tap screen wake feature turned off. I gotta press the power button twice and wait for a few seconds for it to work.

Proximity sensor issue

I'm having the proximity sensor issue on my N6. As in, the screen turns off when I put the phone up to my face, then won't turn back on.
I don't a case or a screen protector (read some places that that was the cause of the issue).
I've enabled 'Power button ends call', which fixed it for some people, but not for me.
It's been doing it for a while now. I just manually flashed to Marshmallow hoping that would fix it, but no go.
Any ideas?
What happened with this in the end?
I'm having the same issue. I reboot my phone as a fix, but it's a pain.
No screen protector.
I'm starting to wonder if it's a hardware issue and sending it back for a replacement.

Proximity sensor/screen issue during calls?

I am running the latest a stock debloated 6.0 rom from tupac4u right now and having some issue during phone calls. For me I make or receive a call and my display will turn off even before putting the phone to my face. However, getting the screen on during a call is a bit hard to do as pressing the power button doesn't turn the screen on(sometimes have to press it 3 times to get it on). Anyway to fix this, or to disable this? Thank you
Using a screen protector? If yes, it may be blocking the proximity sensor, which is located just to the left of the top speaker grill.
In another thread I'm being told it's a bug with marshmallow. How accurate is that? And yes I am using a screen protector. I'm just not sure where the proximity sensor is so I can adjust accordingly?

I do not use shell or film and have the problem for a long time. Tried everything but nothing helps you get used to it.
Knowing isuses since 5.1 and the sensor is on the top left of the earpiece
Yeah i took a light to find where it was. I have a tempered protector. Tried to use a knife to adjust it, but broke the screen protector. Oh well I'll just skip one cup of tea this week. If I go with a regular screen protector(one of those cheap $1 ones will that still cause issues?
Yup, the oversensitive proximity sensor issue started after 5.1 arrived. I too had a tempered glass covering the proximity sensor and it was working fine when I was on 5.0/5.0.2. I had to remove the tempered glass and get a new one which doesn't cover proximity sensor to fix this problem.
Did the same thing. Got a regular screen protector right now for a cheap, until I can find a tempered model that doesn't cover the proximity sensor.
