The phone alone shouldn't do that by that much. Do you have a lot of other things connecting by wifi such as printers, pc's, etc? The only thing I could think of besides that is a very old router with high latency or a poor internet connection.

Question on range of Wifi on Note?

Just wondering if anyone else notices poor range with the wifi on the Note? I switched from an iPhone and noticed the range on the Note doesn't seem as good.
Otherwise, loving the Note!

it's not only the Note I would suffice as being weak on WIFI... all android phones have some wifi issues.. e.g. always saying "Obtaining WiFi address..." and etc.
it's not the device that is actually having the issue rather it is how Android is implemented. Between any other OS, windows, symbian, IOS, blackberry OS... android seemed too far distant in managing Wifi capabilities and reception. I know this for the fact that when I had my E7 before, I used to connect to public wifi hotspots without any issue at all. Simulating it back on my S2, and on my Note... it takes some considerable time before my device would connect to the hotspot.
Again bud, nothing to worry about.. your not alone on this... this issue (on my end though) happens only if my note scans public hotspots first time.,and takes really a couple of minutes to connect to the said wifi connection....sometimes even the connection fails.. and I have to reconnect again... but eventually it will connect (it would say 'connected').
So cheerup... to sum it up again, its not your device.. but the OS itself that needs some revisions from Google itself.
Don't forget to hit 'Thanks' if I've helped you someway or the other.

I don't think the OP was asking about why it takes long to connect to wifi. They want an explanation of why it won't stay connected when he is a far distance from his router. My suggestion is to check the settings that are best for the Note hardware and adjust your router settings accordingly. If you still have a problem then it will be something that is obstructing the signal of the router. I had the same problems with my Linksys router until I adjusted the settings to fit my devices better.

If you look in a bigger spectrum bud, you will see that WIFI connection AND issues have always been one of the perennial issues in android. Not just with the Note, but includes the Moto Droid, Vibrant and even the htc one X as well. The OP states that he is using the same wifi connection on his Iphone and he doesnt have that issue at all. Only on his Note. So on my understanding on what you say.. How could it be a router setting or an 'obstruction on the signal of his router' if and if he can connect perfectly fine on his Iphone? given the two phones on 1 wifi infastructure.. only his Note fails.. the Iphone doesn't. What's your take on that?
@OP
anyway, You can try to see if you can download and run this app from playstore.. it's called Wifi fixer. Download that and see how your poor wifi range connection fares.
Cheers.

Great, thanks for the suggestion - downloading and will try it out! :good:
Just a followup: Tried wifi-fixer but didn't seem to help address the range issue, but thanks again for the suggestion. Any other ideas to resolve?
As for the poor wifi range for the note this is a noticeable issue we all encounter in compare to other mobiles vendors now i even have my access point over my bed and still not got full signal , for the lag in authentication and connecting time i found that playing with diffrent types of wifi encryptions on ur router or accesspoint side will solve this issue, i have no problems in that.

So is this a hardware issue? I've played with various roms (criskelo, kingdroid, rocket, stock, etc) and they all seem to have the same range issues. Just curious.

try latest modem, buffer tweak for build.prop, try wifi high performance widgets.
then you will realize that it drink more juice when you increase the performance, it wont be able to beat intel's wifi(4-5bars) or linksys wifi(2-3bars), but at least you will see 1-2bars.

HTC One wi-fi keeps resetting my DLink DIR-655 router.

Every ten or fifteen minutes when using the phone the router will reset. So I don’t just lose the wi-fi on the phone I lose my desktop internet connection. I have the latest firmware (1.35NA) for hardware version A4. ???
Someone suggested the power hog mode in the phones wi-fi settings but that no help.
Same issue with me? Any help is appreciated.

I guess were just SOL. I’ve looked around on the net and the HTC One X and S had Wi-Fi issues also. This seems like kinda a big deal. Are they going to fix it or whenever you go someplace with a certain brand or router your just screwed?
I’ve had my router for some time now and none of mine or any of my friend’s laptops or phones or printers caused a problem. I was really hoping this One was the one but I guess it is getting returned.
Hackers?! Who needs em, I just walk around with my HTC phone and reboot routers.
Spent some hours with Sprint and HTC but they say they have never heard of the issue and just want to replace the phone.
Been looking around some more and it looks like the other ‘One’ models had Wi-Fi issues as well. I’ve tried some suggestions. Disabling WISH and QOS on the router seems to have made the dropout less frequent but there are still fits of them. Others also said to use WPA and not WPA2 and try a different Cipher but you should not have to do this just to get a new phone working. No other device has had an issue with my router or its settings. I guess I’m the only one though. Maybe no one uses router at home with encryption and passwords just free or open hotspots.
I also have this problem and the only fix i found for it was to set my router to use wireless G only, something with wireless N was causing the reboots on my router..btw i i have a dlink extreme N router...hope this helps u

not to take this slightly off topic, but i have never had any good luck with dlink routers and wireless devices in general. i thought comcast was to blame for all of my internet issues, but they were all solved when i switched router brands.
not saying the phone and router shouldn't play nice, i just think the dlink brand of routers in general has these issues. cisco/linksys and even asus have worked a lot better for me. i own the dir-655 and that thing has never been able to handle wireless traffic without dropping connections constantly (to laptops, apple and lenovo, to tablets, nexus and ipad, to phones, iphones and a variety of android devices)
Yeah..im actually planning on picking up a linksys router this weekend

If the router resets, it's a router issue, it shouldn't do that, whatever bad signals are sent to it, especially if you have remote management turned off
Lol I thought my DI-655 was defected and now I see this thread
Changed to Linksys E2500 and problem solved.

You’re are not wrong but I don’t see lots of people saying that the DIR-655’s 802.11n don’t work. I do see lots of people with HTC One, One X, and so on with Wi-Fi issues. The DIR-655 has been out for a while with no more firmware updates. No other devices have this issue and I had the DNA for a time and used it on the same router without issue. Just got a message from DLink and they just act like HTC. Have you tried other 802.11n devices it must be the phone that is at fault.

Well I've never had this happen with any of the many Wi-Fi devices I've had. I even had the DNA for a time a few months ago and it did not do this. I know the feeling when you come to the conclusion that one brand sucks but I’ve found that they all can have issues. I’ve been reading up on new routers and seems like Asus has issues, even read a review where they had dropped connections. Maybe they were in a bad spot. Maybe one too many of my neighbors is clogging up the Wi-Fi now. ??? I just know this is the only device that has done this and as usual all the manufactures involved just point fingers.
D-Link sadly makes unremarkable garbage. I have found that most residential router models are very bad....
I now use commercial grade Mikrotik routers that cost less than the Residential routers. The Mikrotik router NEVER goes down.... I have an up time that is 1.6 years and that was its installation date. I probably should update the firmware, but why reboot it.... It's working fine.
Models like this one RB/751U-2HnD are great.
***Beware nontechnical users will have no clue how to use it.
I have been having the same problem. WiFi drops every ten minutes or so. The router doesn't reset though, I just lose signal and have to turn WiFi off on the phone and turn it back on again I know the WiFi still works because my husband had it working on his iPhone at the same time mine drops. I've only had the phone since today and I need to have WiFi work because I don't get a good signal at my work. There gas to be done sort if software fix for this problembecause I see a lot of posts about this same issue.

Well I've-
Set the phone for Best Wi-Fi performance, uses more power.
Disabled WISH & QOS.
Restarted the phone and router a few times.
Today I'm trying:
Set the phone to 2.4GHz only.
Set a DHCP reservation for the TCP/IP address.
The next step would be to use 802.11g only.
Yeah...tried just about everything also, and sadly Wireless G only was the only thing that worked....

That's lame but I don't get why my HTC DNA did not seem to mind the DIR-655. Did you try to re-flash the router? Going to 802.11g only takes me down to 20MBPS from 27 with 802.11n.
Hello, I am having the same problem but with a DLink DGL-4500 router, its really annoying
Yep, tried reflashing firmware and restoring to factory defaults, still sno go...yeah the drop in speed really suck, really noticeable when streaming vids

I could not tell the difference. With N only setup and everything at auto it would just show 55-65 Mbps in the router status. I forced the transmission rate and channel width to the highest settings and while the Mbps on the router status page would then show 130-150Mbps it was still just as slow. The Wi-Fi analyzer on the phone still showed a 65 Mbps connection. ???

Wifi performance

I'm curious how your wifi is performing because i'm getting pretty bad wifi reception and starting to think it's maybe a hardware fault.
On my old phone (One X) i'm getting full bars and a link speed of 72Mbps allmost everywhere in my livingroom.
On the One mini i have never had 72Mbps (max 54 and mostly 26 or lower) and frequently loose wifi connection in my house where the One X easally maintains a strong connection.
The same is with the bleutooth connection. When streaming music I only have to touch the top of the right corner and things start to stutter.
What is your experience? Please let me know so I know if i have to send it for repair.

Thanks for responding. I have tried that and it didn't seem te make a differnce.
What kind of link speeds are you getting?
You can check that by tapping on your wifi SSID when you are connected.
Thanks!
According to my phone, 65Mbps

I have sent my device in for repair. I received a new phone and all problems are solved I have steady connection now

moto x pure att WIFI kills data signal

Issue: While connected to my EA6900 (1900 AC) linksys wireless modem my data dies. If I turn off wifi, I am able to call out, (although patchy), get texts, and use android services. As soon as I turn on wifi, these services all seem to shut down. Although sometimes some data is able to eak through.
Background: I am using a Moto x (2014) Pure Edition on the AT&T Network. I have confirmed time and time again that wireless works on my network, I have a full wifi signal and decent LTE signal (unsure how strong -- it shows 2-3 bars). I had this problem initially in 4.4.4 and it persists in 5.0 (I updated to see if that would fix the issue. Previously I had and HTC One with no issues what so ever. Reboots do not fix this issue and ATT has told me it is not their problem.
Hypothesis: I think the Moto X 2014 has problem connecting on the 5ghz (duel band) or AC networks. I have noticed while at work or other locations, I have had no connectivity issues with wifi on. I am pretty sure they are using standard 2.4ghz G and or N connections. I believe that the phone is unable to switch between the range of bands and causes it to lose data connectivity.
Has anyone had this issue or can anyone correct it?
I don't have an ac or 5ghz router so I can't test this. Have you played with the WiFi frequency band under advanced WiFi? You can force connect to 5ghz or 2.4ghz.
You could also turn off ac on the router configuration page to see if you can connect on n.
When I have time I will play around on my network to try and force the connection to different protocols. I have an AC router from EnGenius it's their ESR1200 which is a consumer grade device but pretty nice over all and was a steal at $60 over on Amazon:
http://www.engeniustech.com/home-networking/routers/16742-esr1200
But will try a few options. Right now I have it connected to the 5ghz band w/o issue. I can add I have long encountered issues for Android when moving between wifi networks. It has always been prone to struggling to juggle connections, even when switching nodes on a mono-SSID network. I can trace my issues back to Jelly Bean. But it seems like you are seeing something different.
If I find anything I'll post it soon as time permits, busy week for me at work or I might get lucky and just die in my sleep.
EDIT: For giggles I forced a connection to the 5ghz side and sent some texts as well as a couple calls w/o issue. Was able to receive as well. Mode is .11n of course and a solid 433mbps network connection speed
This is where my hypothesis really dies... I have attempted forcing 2.4 or 5ghz but both failed. The other option is the phone doesnt play nice with the EA6900... which is seemingly supported by the fact that my phone hasnt had any issues while i am connected to my parents house for thankgsiving. They are running 2.4ghz at a blazing 65mbps (i usually average around 400 at my house on my ea6900). Could it be the AC modem? One other thought is chromecast is somehow interfering with my phone. I will need to try removing chromecast when i get home to see if that works, but at this point, i would find it hard to imagine.
This is literally driving me up a wall.
EDIT: So I am at home at it has been running better but just now it has decided to seize up. Showing same info... 2.4ghz 65mpbs same network... full bars.... att shows 3/5 bars but doesnt say LTE or H or anything..just ATT (pretty sure thats normal)

There are a bunch of comments about it overheating and dropping signal repeatedly. I would think about returning it under warranty.

I wanted to blame my router very badly... however i have never experienced any drops on my laptop -- unless my laptop somehow deals with drops better than my phone...

Weird wifi problem

Hello friends.
I am facing a strange problem. My internet speed is much slower than my friends although they use the same wifi.
Are you sure you're not using ADSL internet or something which speeds can fluctuate a lot due to phone line quality or external factors. Speed variations through WAN is nothing special since there's like a million factors in play.

Do you have a dual band router? Maybe the phone connects to 2.4 which per default limits bandwidth to 20MHz unless you've applied the wifi channel bonding which gives your better bandwidth on 2.4GHz.
Or perhaps your router has different SSIDs for 2.4 and 5GHz channel as most consumer product routers without functionality to load balance or for devices to 5GHz band at 80MHz bandwidth and higher speeds.
Now it is working fine.. I adjusted to automatic, previously it is set on 5GHZ. Okay I have query. If I do clear cache constantly say 3 times in a day then it will effect my phone??
