This is NOT about banding, horizontal lines, or blurry edges.
This is about the shade of white changing when looking at a white screen. (Market, white webpage, reddit, xda forums, etc).
Here is a video link showing the issue:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-mVWkBK41I
Symptoms:
When viewing white screen and scrolling up/down, notice a small, subtle change in the shade of the predominant color. (From a grey white to a lighter grey white, etc)
Steps to reproduce:
1. Turn brightness low for best results (automatic settings off)
2. Use phone in dark place for best results
3. Go to a page with lots of white/light colors for the background, (xda forums is a good example)
4. Just go about your business and read comments as you're scrolling down.
5. Notice a small change in shade/tint/hue every 5-20 seconds.
Notes:
1. I've tried to turn brightness very high to see if this countered the problem: Fail
2. I've tried turning on automatic brightness: Fail
3. I've tried mixed settings with automatic brightness, auto adjust screen power: Fail
4. I've tried to play with the phone in a well lit setting: Fail
---All of the tested conditions above, I was still able to see the change of shade
Questions:
1. Is this a hardware or software problem?
2. I've read that some people who have experienced this exchanged their unit. Did it fix the problem?
3. I heard reports of running the dead pixel app for 20 minutes might fix this issue. Any thoughts?
4. For those who never noticed the problem, could you try the steps above and see if it happens?
The reason that this is a problem is that it strains the eye. In ocular terms, adaptation is the eye's ability to adjust to various levels of dark and light. So when this change of shade occurs my eyes have to readjust to that shade, but it occurs so often that my eye is agitated from having to adjust over and over.
I have a few days left to send this unit back overseas (/sigh) so I'm trying to get as much info as I can here before I take the next step.
Thanks.
Update
Just upgraded to XXKL7.
I heard some users report that this issue is less visible and/or gone due to update.
I will test this more thoroughly tonight and report back.
Prior to the update I emailed the vendor, with screen shots. Still waiting for a response to see what their position is.
Here are the screen shots if interested
Image 2.1 - opened market
Image 2.2 - scrolled down a little, notice red tint
Image 2.3 - scrolled down more, notice tint went back to normal
Any other users that have this shade problem, please reply here if the newest update has fixed or alleviated your issues^^.
I reported it straight away. The hue change has gone with the update. It is not there any more.

Thanks for the response. I'm excited to hear the news.
Just to be double sure, have you tried with screen filter(app) on?
During my testing, using the screen filter showed the change of shades more convincingly than not.
Could I request of you to try it?
On another note, drawing on the s memo seems like the shades are changing a little bit. I'll keep that in mind for testing.
Confirmed gone on kl7 here too!

another update
Issue is definitely not gone after the update for me.
It has become more subtle than before but still apparent and annoying on the eyes.
Still waiting for response from vendor. Will update again then.
I have the same problem, in fact I've already commented on your youtube video before seeing this post. I have a video of my own up. The problem I have is my item is all packaged up ready for RMA. I don't know if I should try KL7 or not.
Strange. Mine and a few others its definitely gone. No more changes at all

I'm gonna try KL7 on mine now. I have obvious tinting which I doubt it will fix. I'll report back the moment it's done.

Out of curiosity where did you buy your phones? Just about to flash KL7 now and I'll report back. Mine was bought from Expansys, shipped from France.

Okay guys. I updated to KL7. Still massive changes in hue in the screen. I'll be sending the phone back on the 3rd so when I receive a replacement I'll let the OP know whether it helped.
I had the same issue, but in my case just turning off the automatic brightness fixed it.

Good to see im not the only one with problems. I got mine from expansys korean site shipped from hong kong. I heard they have horrible customer service. Sent an email about 5 days ago and no response.
You could try calling them. I'm fairly sure my phone came with a Korean ROM on it. Mine goes back on the third. Are you in Korea yourself?
Upgrading to KL7 made the issue go away for me as well.

Its happened once only to me, the screen changed to deep red, i restarted phone and its never come back.
Just to add to it, with brightness set to minimum and automatic disabled its not really any signs of hue change at all, im on rom kka and the only thing i do notice on sites that dont have white pages, like xdas creamy colour, is a bit of flickering when i scroll down.
I dont think its a hardware issue, if the problem can go away after flashing diff roms then it must be software, saying that, i was running Darkynote when it happened.
Problem is there are two of us here that have flashed a lot of ROMs, including KL7, and also tried everything everyone has suggested but we're still seeing the problems. It might be a software problem for some but so far it's looking like hardware problems for us.
I have a very similar issue. Change of hue (red, sometimes greenish) every 5-20 sec on white/grey background.
Auto brithness and auto screen adjustement doesn't change anything.
More visible on lower brightness setting but still there on highest.
Running KKA firmware until KL7 is proposed OTA here in france.
Crossing fingers that it's software... I would just hate to ship it back for servicing.

I'll be calling them today. Yes I'm currently in Korea. Expanysys Korea has their own warranty provider in Korea supposedly, with a free 3 month warranty extendable to 1 year for a price.
I'm really contemplating if I should root and try throwing on some custom roms to see if this issue is fixed. But I'm pretty noobish with all this.
Cheers and happy new year everyone!
Update:
Since expansys hasn't sent me a reply via email yet I FINALLY got a hold of expansys by phone.
Supposedly they claimed that Samsung told them that they will not fix this problem even though it's a known issue (I can't even trust that expansys even contacted samsung). But after Expansys looking at my screenshots they offered me an exchange. I'm going to get a full refund instead.
So I'll be returning the note tomorrow. After some thought, I'm going back to my S2. The Note is a beautiful phone, but I don't think it fits my life style.
Thank you everyone in the XDA note forums. I wish you the best with your note. I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.
Happy New Year
PS. Never ordering from expansys again.
Happy New Year to you too.
My phone should reach Expansys in France today. I really hope they replace it without me having to provide screenshots, the only thing I have is a video showing it very subtly changing colours. They did ask for screenshots but I told them it was almost impossible to capture it. I don't know if I should ask for a refund or replacement.

I'm extremely curious if CM9 has an answer to this issue =]. Any volunteers?
Hi there i was wondering is there anyway to adjust the colors of your screen with a excutable script?
I only wanna use the color red for my screen for battery saving on my i9000.
I wanna do this with a swipe up motion on my launcher so it has to be a excutable script are something XD.
Is there a terminal command that adjusts the screen colors for the i9000.
Im using slim bean 3.0 and im a noob with android and linux but if someone could give me a good direction it would be helpfull.
Sorry for the bad english XD
thanks in advance
Wow... that is NOT a good idea... it will be hard to see and read the texts, and it WON'T save ANY battery, cause if you use only red, the whole screen will be red... no point of using it then :/
I,m sorry to disappoint you T.T

I don't think you understand any of the science behind it and can't be bothered explaining it so here is a brief summary.
- Red is the lowest wavelength colour, uses least energy
- Disabling all colour channels except Red results in +66% power conservation from screen
- Whole screen won't be red, it will just be reproduced using varying grades of red. Yes text will be harder to read but that isn't an issue since you can just turn it off if you need or change the colour channel
In the past I have used the Chainfire3D app which uses its own GPU drivers on your device. It has an option called "Night mode" that allows you turn off colour channels and stuff resulting in massive battery gains. I used to use it with GB and am unsure if it works with ICS/JB. Make a backup and give it a go, post back with results please.

Yes, I used to have swipe up gesture on my launcher enable red night mode. It's quite convenient.

Do you know the reason behind the bootloops and whether or not Chainfire is going to/currently updating the software?
It was accectly what i was looking for awesome but it gives me a bootloop with JB
Just got my Z yesterday and when I took pictures at night or in dark areas, there's a lot of vertical noise on the screen. Like those you see on old crt tv/monitors. The resulting pics however turn out fine. But it's really irritating because it makes it difficult to see what you're talkin.
Screenshots attached. Anyone else having this issue?
PS: Post the same issue at Sony forum as well.
Edit: The problem only appears on the camera interface. There's no problem with the picture itself.
Tech radar gave the camera a horrible review shame as I was going to buy it but now will wait till 15th.

reviewers gave the camera a good rating, as in, it wasnt excellent, but wasnt bad either.
i heard it performs the same as last gen 8mp shooters :S
you may have a faulty unit, try to get a hold of a friend's unit and see if you can reproduce the result

Really no idea why it doesn't have this. It is so terrible in dark places. I was with some friends trying to take a picture of my friends at night. Every picture was blurred to **** because nothing was in focus. I tried to take like 10 pictures. My friend beside me with a GS3 only needed to take one picture because it does that flash-focus.

If there's a situation where the HTC One fails to focus cos of low light, I don't see how anything the S3 takes to be even usable, unless you mean flash-focus AND flash and not just flash-focus and take the image as is.

Basically HTC have cocked it up a little. They've assumed the sensor is more capable than it actually is.
The majority of phone cams will use the flash to light an extremely dark scene so that it can set the focus for when it triggers the flash full strength to take the picture.

LG Camera and Infinite focus works ok. Also in HTC camera app, if its completely dark room, just hold the button down to take pic til it clicks and then let go. First picture out when you load up the camera software should come out pretty well focused.
Secondly, if you're taking pictures in completely dark rooms, there's something wrong with you (I do this too, just waiting for an app to put a scary pic and a loud sound on resulting picture as a scary joke lol)

The One does this too, the flash lights up once before the picture is taken to focus, then turns off, then flashes, unfortunately the software is buggy and it's not always focused.

well i was at a concert, with some buddies, and the place was dark, dark enough were the camera could not see. i tried to shoot a pic of my buddies and every single pic came out blurry, it was really embarrassing, a brand new 500 dollar phone cant take a pic in a dark room.:crying: lol
I'm having the exact same problems. Photos during the day are amazing, but in dark areas it's a major problem!
My SGS3 went "flllaasshhhh" (while focusing), then "flash" again when it actually took the picture.
My HTC One does not do that initial "flllaasshhhh" while it focuses. It only flashes when it takes the picture, and 95% of the time the resulting picture is blurry.
See FULL size example here: http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/1126/a8lg.jpg
:silly:
The attached image is re-sized .... loses the blurriness.
Hey, long time xperia user here from Z -> z1 -> z2 -> Z3
Right now using my Z3 with out any issues but kind of broke atm. Get a best deal to sell my Z3 & the Z3 compact is considerably cheap in my part of the world.
So, would you guys recommend me to switch to Z3 compact or go to other brand which offers rich features like this. What are the drawbacks in the compact design? performance wise will the z3 compact match with Z2?
Thank you.
Z3 is nice, but mine had some serious GPS issues. Everything else was perfect.

Yes. No overheating, a true killer battery, great size and a pretty decent camera if you know how to use manual mode.

I still regret buying the black one everytime i look at the white one. White looks the most premium among all the variants (My opinion) . I'm still happy with my black one though. You can go for orange or green too if you want unique colours

I agree with previous posts. No overheating, the battery is great, the camera is brilliant (in manual mode), and everything works (mostly) without issue - whatever problems I have had the answers have been readily available here on these forums.
Regarding colour then I had an orange phone, which looked pink in my clear case. After the lanyard hole sprung a leak in a glass of water (as a result from taking a bunch of photos the previous day in a freezing/frozen river) I changed to a black phone and I am not regretting the switch in colour; though a green one would have been nice because then the chances of grabbing the wrong phone from a table would lessen.
Now I stay away from subzero underwater photography and all is well.
Thank you everyone for sharing your opinion :good:

I set the camera to 15.5MP. The focus is on multi and also the metering. The WB I change depending on the lighting and the I tend to have the EV a tick or two below center.
When you have the time you should try and take a bunch of photos of the same subject while changing the WB and EV between shots.
I generally have the ISO on auto but you should play with that as well but the ISO only goes to 800 if you set it manually in any other mode than 8MP, but 8MP allows for 3200 ISO (the full 12800 ISO is ONLY available on Superior-auto)
The manual mode always remembers your last settings.
Hope this helps.
P.s. Here is a Ladybug larva that I photographed with the Z3C (resized because it is attached)
Now i am tempted to go the other way, and trade in my Z3C for a Z3, reason being, my eyes are starting to get old, and a bigger screen will help me out. Decisions Decisions
