FAQ:
What is a "bootstack"?
Our devices have a number of partitions that all work together to give us a functioning smartphone. Every time LG releases a new firmware there are certain partitions that get updated (aboot, dbi, laf, modem, rpm, sbl1, tz). This subset of partitions was given the arbitrary label "bootstack" at one point and the term stuck. They have been grouped together here in flashable zips along with a custom recovery and are referenced by their corresponding official LG version code (i.e. 12b, 26a, etc).
NOTE: Though the "modem" and "aboot" (bootloader) partitions are included, these terms are NOT synonymous with bootstack.
Which one should I use?
Please reference your firmware's OP to verify which bootstack version is required. These ALL include the full set of matching partitions. For example, the 27A zip contains the 27A aboot, modem, etc.
My firmware thead mentions loki. Do I need the older aboot/bootloader?
If you are flashing a kernel (or firmware containing a kernel) that hasn't been bumped, you will also need to flash this 12B bootloader zip after. If you aren't sure, you can generally use this as it works with both loki and bump exploits. This may not always be the case, but for now it is. The custom TWRP recovery included in these zips works with both.
What's the difference between bump/loki?
These are the two bootloader security exploits that we have for our device. They are the only reason you are able to flash custom kernels and recoveries in the first place. Discussion of their intricacies is beyond the scope of this thread, but here's a good place to start reading.
How do I get fastboot back?
Some people weren't comfortable with fastboot, so I've left the Download Mode (laf) partition in these. If you want fastboot instead, flash this.

Flashable Bootstack zips:
12B
24A
26A
27A
28A
39A
12B Bootloader - needed for older kernel/boot images (and firmware that contains a kernel) that ONLY support loki.
*All zips include TWRP 2.8.6.3 compiled by @blastagator. Please thank him along with the TWRP team for their work.
**The 39A zip contains the 28A aboot/laf since LG has patched the bump exploit with their L releases.
Flashable Modem zips:
12B
24A
26A
27A
28A
39A
* These zips ONLY contain the modem. If you want all of the corresponding partitions together (highly recommended) you should use the bootstack zips above.
Manual OTA:
Make sure your phone is COMPLETELY stock. Even the slightest change to one file will disrupt the OTA process as these are binary patches, not kdz's. If you are unsure whether any file has been modified, you should KDZ or TOT first.
Copy/paste the following url into your browser while changing the two version numbers in RED to match the patch you wish to apply. The example below downloads a bin file that brings you from 27A to 28A.
https://pvzwmdmcdn.vzw.motive.com/firmware/LG_VS980_27A_TO_28A.bin
*Keep in mind that there may not always be a patch directly to the version you want. For example, to get to 39A, we first had to apply 27A to 28A, then 28A to 39A. Thanks to @JackpotClavin for finding these files.
Change the extension of the file you just downloaded from ".bin" to ".up"
Create a folder in the root of the sdcard on your phone named "SoftwareUpdate" and copy the file into that folder. Using the example above, you would now have a /sdcard/SoftwareUpdate/LG_VS980_27A_TO_28A.up file on your phone.
If you prefer CLI and have root with working adb setup or terminal app on your phone, you can enter the following command from a root shell prompt to start the update process. Otherwise skip to the next step.
Code:
am start -n com.lge.lgfota.permission/.DmcEzUpdateStart
You can also download an app that allows you to launch activities through a GUI, such as Activity Launcher. In this app, select All Activities from the dropdown, scroll down until you find "com.lge.lgfota.permission", and then select DmcEzUpdateStart from there. It may also be hiding under Verizon Hidden Menu or Software Update.
Your phone will reboot on its own and go through the OTA process. If you encounter any errors, it's because you weren't 100% stock, so you will need to kdz/tot first.

UPDATE:
I can confirm that fastboot is still available with the 39A bootloader. Not surprisingly, the bump exploit has been patched.
Bump still works with the 28A bootloader, however.
I think you copy/pasted the wrong links for the "Unofficial firmware". I'm getting a login prompt when trying to access them.

Yeah, I had to go to 27A bootloader to be able to get twrp working (I had to kdz for about the 6th time in the past 2 days ). That sucks that they patched it though.
EDIT:
Damn, I just realized I didn't have to .kdz this last time...lol, oh well.

Thanks for letting me know. The links are correct, but I was hoping that since the folder public it would allow non-registered AFH users to see it as well. I will either move them or just post separate links.
EDIT: Fixed. I just put them in two zips.

Sweet. Did you post you tried the bumped twrp on the 39a and it didn't work. Last time I remember they had to rebuild twrp based on 26a. It might need to be rebuild on 39a sources.

TWRP works, you just need 27A or 28A bootloader (aboot). I also needed a bumped boot.img because I was getting the boot cert. error.
Side question: Are you able to turn your wi-fi radio on/off? I can't get it to turn on.

How about the power button LED, is that working properly, now that you've updated the bootstack?
I haven't tried test rom MicroMod777 provided with the new bootstack, I may just try it to see if wi-fi works.
First I'm going to restore my backup before I made all my changes to see if wi-fi will work.

Before you can flash any rom after this, the boot.img must be bumped first on any rom you want to use. As time passes, you'll probably see all the ROM's bumped. If the rom you want to use is not BUMPED, don't use this.

By the sound of it after this you'll wanna flash your chosen thermally governed twrp, assuming you can update to a non bumped twrp. Is that possible micro, or will flashing different twrp break it?

In the general G2 forum they have CM12 running. The Verizon model still has a few hiccups like no working data, but I know they will have it fixed very soon.

thanks. at least i wasn't the only one without data working on that build
I also made a how to video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxnuenmojmE
Data is working as of the 11/19 build. You just need to turn data roaming on and data will work. You WON'T be roaming even if it shows R you'll still be on LTE/3G whatever is available in your area. Switch roaming to on and either toggle data off/on or reboot your phone and you're good to go.
Has anyone tried putting Verizon's Visual Voicemail on this? It looks like VVM requires being able to intercept sms and Lollipop's "Choose your primary sms app" seems to block vvm from intercepting them. I guess Verizon is going to have to sort this out before they can offer lollipop on any of their devices. Besides that, this rom seems pretty good!
Thanks both for the heads up and the video tutorial. It works fine except for the knock feature, anyone else have a issue? I tried to load the hiddenmenu.apk via recovery and it would not load.

Are you talking about the 27A kernel? If so, you will have issues using other kernels; I think it has something to with the new hd call settings, etc. I tried other kernels as well, and it caused all kinds of issues like the ones you mentioned.
Right now I'm using the stock 27A kernel, but I modified it so my root status shows as "Unrooted" instead of "Rooted".
Does anybody know if the 27a bootstack is compatible with xdabbeb's vs982.5 rom?
EDIT: I'm not very patient so I flashed the modem zip. Worked fine. I have a null in baseband in phone settings, but I'm guessing that's because I didn't flash bootstack (might be rom compatibility also). Data and phone are working fine.
Thanks!

You have to extract the contents of the kdz using the extraction tool that was posted quite a while ago. Extract the .dz file from the .kdz, then from the .dz extract the boot_xxxxxx.bin (the x's are numbers I can't remember ) file, and rename it to boot.img...then you can flash it.

Here's a fast way to do a full factory restore so you can take an ota without erasing your internal storage.
This will not however remove the rooted message for a warrant claim.
Check MD5's before flashing.
Step 1: Flash Flash KK24a System Restore 1st.
Step 2: Flash KK24a Bootstack Restore 2nd.

Yes.....
@MicroMod777, just to make sure before I proceed, I lose my custom recovery (in op), but I'm assuming I maintain root? I've read from others root is kept through 27a, and that Freedom Tools also restores recovery. Am I correct on all? Thank you!

You'll loose root, but root detection is still there. You can use my freedom tools to get custom recovery on 27a.

Excellent, thank @MicroMod777. One more question; after I flash this, I'm unrooted, no custom recovery. If I root the 24a using ioroot25 (but not a custom recovery), will the root maintain through the updates to 27A? I recall reading somewhere on here that it did. Thanks for your work!!

Not really sure, but you can always use Stump Root on 27A. Can take up to 10 minutes for it to root through brute force:

I am pretty sure root maintains with the OTA 27A.
Awesome. This is great for when I gotta go to stock real quick for some fix or something and will real helpful once lollipop is out

Can't do 27a restore as System.img is too big for a zip to be flashed. Its over 2.2gb. Needs to be under 2.1gb for custom recovery to flash it. I can't get it compressed under 2.1gb.

Looks like they may have patched that in twrp recently.
https://github.com/omnirom/android_bootable_recovery/commit/78ab0c5807c17e343cc4fa9af86ea2d787e0e047
Though this could also just be for backups over 2gb... But they split those anyway.

I haven't had to use it on my LP system images. I used 7zip to compress one with zerofree, the other without zerofree, and the difference was around 8MB. I'm assuming LG didn't add too much junk info. this time around.
now that Oreo is available a rooted flashable Oreo zip is possible for those of us that are rooted on 11g?
or is not possible.
anyone can confirm if is even possible with H872
I believe it is. It doesn't matter if it's a flashable zip, you should be able to install the system and kernel image from the Oreo KDZ by extracting it.

We don't have the Oreo kdz, at least I haven't seen it posted to here yet. I'm going to try building the source code, and see what I get though.

Oh, is it OTA only? Perhaps you could have someone take the OTA then dump their system and boot images
First we gotta find "someone". I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I know we need either the ota file, or a kdz to start with. I'm trying to figure it out, but there's little to no documentation.
Found the KDZ! https://lg-firmwares.com/ has it!
it's possible and I already make it. But i have to wait hours til uploaded to gdrive
It's completely doable. I've already done it. Either repack your own or use immns' flashable ZIP.
However, I didn't dirty flash it. I did both a Factory Restore and wiped Data before flashing it. Also, make sure you reflash TWRP to Recovery prior to exiting afterwards.
H872 is same as h872bk?
