[Q] That darn pink tint... - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Just picked up a new Turbo yesterday. It's not my first. I've had one before that had the pink tint in the top half of the screen. It was blatantly obvious and one of the worst cases of it I've seen. The one I picked up yesterday... well, it's there, but it's really subtle. The problem is... I see it. I asked my wife to look to see how nitpicky I was being, and she couldn't see it. She said, "Well I can probably think hard enough and make myself think I'm seeing something" - though she also didn't have her contacts in...
So I'm trying to find out how nitpicky I'm being and if it's worth trying to exchange. I worry I'll walk in and nobody else will see it. I'm also wondering if I was so worried about getting one that had this issue, that I'm "seeing it" when it's hardly there at all, and if I wasn't aware of the problem, I wouldn't notice it... if that makes sense. Here are a few photos from my iPhone 6:

I'm not going to say what part of the screen has it b/c I want someone else to see it without any guidance...

Here's another:

This is the part where I say, "Well my iPhone doesn't see it the same as I do with my eyes..."
Thanks for the feedback.

I'll go ahead and say what I'm seeing - it's along the left side, top to bottom... though in certain situations it's less obvious all the way down. But if you look at the left side then look at the right side, the left almost always looks like there's a subtle shadow.. In real life it has more of a pink hue to it than those photos show.

Try this one - https://www.dropbox.com/s/7fcebwyv67aikbb/Photo Mar 19, 10 17 18 AM.jpg?dl=0
Focus on the bottom section. Then look close on the left (preferably around the text) then go to the far right. Still no difference? Or is it like my wife said... if you try really hard you can make yourself see it? lol
Edit: In all honesty the iPhone doesn't capture it the same as it looks IRL... the screen itself is more yellow (not bad, just typical AMOLED) with my eyes than the iPhone shows as well.

Looks fine to me.

Question - if you're on a light/white screen, and you move the phone around (showing you the screen at different angles), does the look of the screen change at all? Kind of like those old pictures where the picture would actually change when you moved it?

I appreciate your help...
So go to a blank white screen, like a new document or something along those lines. Maybe turn the brightness up a bit. Now move the phone around like it's on a pivot to where you're seeing the screen at different angles to your eyes. When I do that I'm seeing various hues/shadows sort of shift through the screen. Probably completely normal, I just found it interesting.

I dont have my turbo with me. Using nexus 6 currently

According to my eyedropper tool, there is no pink in those pictures.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with those pics.
If I move my phone around as you described, I do see some slight shifts in the color and with text on the screen it seems like the position of the text even moves a fraction of a mm at a certain point at a very sharp angle (far sharper than you would ever actually try to use your phone at). TBH, I think this is expected with any screen sitting below a sheet of glass due to refraction.

Thanks again for the input. With her contacts in today my wife saw it pretty clearly, as did the person in store. So I wasn't crazy, but obviously the phone pictures weren't grabbing it, sorry about that...

It started last night and seems to have got progressively worse.
I think it's time to get it in for a repair and get the leaking left hand bottom corner of my screen done at the same time.

I'm not sure, I can only say we have been on holiday this week and it has been TORRENTIAL rain all week.
But my phone hasn't got that wet at all?!?!?
Also when we returned to our apartment each night it was VERY VERY warm in there. I'm not sure if that's caused the issue or not.
Anyway, I'll ring HTC tomorrow.

Same here, only time I take off my case is to change battery's
I was doing a clutch replacement on my car last Feb and I accidentally got brake cleaner on the back of my G1. If anyone felt or has/had a G1 will know the back has a rubber feel to it almost like the Nexus One. The cleaner was only on for a few seconds and the result was exactly what your picture is showing. It caused it to wrinkle and bubble up. I peeled it away and ended up buying a new cover.
yep, brake cleaner'll do that lol
had you tried to clean the trackball at some point recently?
if so, what did you use so i dont use it lol
I noticed a small raised area on my bottom cover that could be the start of something similar. Did you get a reply from HTC?

I haven'y been able to contact them yet due to the Easter break.
I will be doing it first thing Tuesday.
Hopefully they'll repair it under warranty because to be honest I ave no idea whats happened.
Okay.
Rung HTC today.
Phone is being collected tomorrow and they did not ask if it was unlocked.
They also didn't ask for a CC to charge against.
Fingers crossed.

I tried taking a photo of it, but it's near impossible to capture. I probably wouldn't have noticed if I didn't look for it after reading the OPs post. If it progresses I'll take one and contact HTC. Right now if I run my fingernail lightly across the front where the bottom half meets the metal frame I can feel a bump on the "teflon." Also when held up to the light and viewed at the proper angle I can see a very small line or crack.
If I posted the photos I doubt many people would be able to see it. Hopefully it stays this way and if it gets worse HTC will fix it.
Update:
Phone was collected Wednesday at 3:30pm.
They rung today to say it had been repaired and had passed final test and will be shipped either today or monday!
Not a bad service at all.
I'm presuming because of the speed they will send a replacement.

Supposedly it's military grade stuff so I bet it wouldn't even affect it. At the very least, I guarantee the effects of what the OP posted would at least be minimized greatly, if not prevented entirely.

LOL! Brake fluid and brake cleaner can look at plastic and it will dissolve. I don't care what grade it is, I promise you it will not hold up to it.
I tried taking some photos under sunlight to capture what could be the start of this problem. They are more difficult to see in the photos than with the eye, so I'm not entirely crazy about this and I'm posting these photos in case this can be used as an early warning sign of a more serious problem for other users. As I mentioned before I probably wouldn't have noticed for quite some time if I hadn't read the OPs post. The darkened spot circled in the photos is raised and can be felt when running my finger along it. When viewed at the proper angle there also appears to be a small crease/crack on the bump.
I had kept my phone in a full phantomskinz before and have since moved to a flexible TPU style case, so there's very little chance of me having bumped it somewhere.
Possible reasons this could be happening? Heat? Moisture? I'm really not sure, but if it turns into a problem like the OPs it could be trouble. Anyone think I should just contact HTC or should I wait and see what becomes of it?

The colours are pretty good, especially the white:
But!!
after some browsing, or benchmark (when the phone is warming a bit)
It gets yellow tint the left side on the screen (maybe not only there, but there is the most recognisable):
I don't find this is a good product from LG.
I hope this is not usual...but personally I'm disappointed :crying:
Looks like the glue spot issues the One X had/still has...
It's to do with how the screen is glued to the LCD.
I really cba going through issues similar to the One X's launch again, that device had a horrendous hardware launch.
Are you in Europe and did you buy this from an EU carrier? If so, it would seem that LG diverted units from Google to go to other vendors. Google actually had to cancel announced plans to sell the Nexus 4 via Playstore in the Netherlands and Belgium at the very last minute because LG couldn't deliver units. I suspect LG's reputation isn't going to be helped by the disastrous launch of this phone. Google deserves to share the criticism too. (There's a rumor that LG delivered only 5,000 units to Google, but then rumors aren't substantiated and it may well be false. However, the UK Playstore sold out in under an hour and the US Playstore was sold out in under a half and hour so it sounds like there weren't a lot of phones available.)
Yeah this definitely looks like the issue that one x had with their launch. Not good!
Christ almighty, this phone is Frankenstein resurrected. How many things went wrong/are wrong again!? I can't keep track anymore. Worst f-cking phone EVER. Sucks it looks so good though.

If you press down on the screen (on the yellow patch as if reviving a dead pixel), does the yellow patch disfigure? Could be some glue that hasn't set in properly yet...leave it overnight and see if it disappears
Well, if it's after the benchmarks, it means it either got so hot that physically damaged lcd, or just helped glue to evaporate faster than it should. I suggest not pushing it for the first few days cpu wise, let everything dry out as much as possible naturally.

On the section 3.5 of Screen section of the French review from frandroid.com here :
http://www.frandroid.com/test/116648_test-du-nexus-4/2/#3
You can see photos of the yellow tint. The text translated from French :
"After some testing, we noticed a weird behavior of the screen on a white background. A blue light escapes from the top of the screen. Moreover, a yellow spot appears. It's sometimes difficult to notice at first sight. Knowing the hardware we have is final, this is very worrisome."
I think it's the same like sony xperia-s screen.

Can you be more specific? Brightness level, which direction your tilting it, whole screen/part of screen etc
All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone
Just went to att store and it seems their display device also have the similar issue but a bit less. Maybe NY last phone, HTC one x, and retina mbp have made me too sensitive for such color changes..

Started the RMA process, hopefully the new phone would work better. I am surprised at the small number of screen complaints about this phone, since samsung's amoled has always had a huge problem with screen consistency.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

Yea, I would be very happy if my screen is the same as the one I saw in ATT store, where there''s still some yellow tint, but it's lighter and much harder to notice, even in full brightness. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Edit: Seems like i have gotten a defective device (screen issue)..

Guys, its freakin me out , there is a strange cloudy like thick line that appears only on dark grey backgrounds the thick line goes from the very top all the way down to the bottom , dark grey backgrounds like when im using the Resurrection Remix theme,
so the line appears darker than the actual dark grey color, almost looking like blackish and its kind of annoying when i focus my eyes on it , i can clearly see it..
I have purchased my Nexus 6 off amazon in new condition the 349$ 32gig edition, first week it was wonderful.
this screen issue happened after the 2nd week .. and i babied it so i didnt drop it even once. hmm..
so i will give this another week and if the screen issue persists , then i will consider moving on from this beast ..sadly.
here is a picture of the actual problem.

"burn in" occurs when you have an asset on your screen for a long time, like the status bar. Then when you remove the status bar, it can still be seen slightly.
So what have you had on your screen from the top to the bottom for a long time that may have caused burn in? I don't think it is that.

RMA is return manufacturer authorization or something like that, basically return it for replacement. Are you out of warranty or just your location that makes it not feasible? If it runs vertically it sounds like a display defect. Burn in would show up where there is a static element for a long time, like the status bar.
Replacing the display might fix it, but would be costly probably.

appears vertically yes .. **** .. i hate white themes.. i hate the white backgrounds .. now i will be stuck with either full white or full black themes, cause that vertical line is seen on all other type of dark backgrounds .. just on pitch black and white i cant see it ... sad man just sad.
@danarama @akselic guys here is a picture of the actual screen.. so you might check and tell me if it is a screen defect .. that line only is visible on Grey colors .. Dark Grey colors, like the Theme i have on now. check it on the picture.

assembly problem: gap between screen and case

Hi,
I just bought a Pixel 5, but I didn't even have time to start it that I saw a trouble related to assembly: there is a gap between the screen and the body, in the top left corner of the phone. It is not as visible in the image as in the real life, but it is still noticeable, on the top side and on the left side of the device.
Someone has the same trouble? If so, have you contacted Google support, or find another solution ? I'm afraid the phone is not waterproof at all in this condition ...
Thx

Mine looks the same, however it's really hard to notice. More or less have to squint
No problem here. Definitely your phone is not waterproof.
It's a new phone, I wouldn't accept this if I were you.
Let them fix/replace it.
Had the same and even worse with two new pixel 5 phones.
Ok, thanks for your answers. So it is not an isolated case, how can Google let phones leave production lines with visible trouble like this . This is not a £100 product from an unknown brand. I will try to contact Google support.
So there it is. A new #pixelgapgate

It's not isolated but how widespread is it? So far 4 or 5 devices but how many more as the rollout progresses. Hopefully by the time it's released in the US all the European flaws will be flushed out of the pipeline. Hey, no wonder you're getting free headphones.

I just thought of something even more concerning. What if it's a battery swelling issue that's causing it to separate? It could have left the production line looking just fine and during shipping a swelling battery caused it to separate.
Just a thought. Hopefully I'm wrong. ?
No issues or gaps with my sage green pixel 5 after having a proper look.
I have the same problem but it's not as pronounced as OPs. I can already see there is some dust getting caught in the gap. I'll probably contact support tomorrow. It's pretty disappointing because I really like the phone but I'm not going to pay for a flawed product. Thanks for making the thread, at least I know it's not just my phone now. I'd suggest anyone else who has this issue to either get a replacement or a refund because there's no way a phone with a visible gap is IP68.

Maybe hold out and see what support says first. Yours sounds like mine. OP's looks a lot worse than mine.
In fact I need to double check mine again during daylight to be sure it's even thefe

Same with my pixel 5. Biggest gap is on the upper left edge (can). I'm pretty sure it's not waterproof anymore.
There's a slight gap for me but it's uniform around the phone?
Top left corner for me.
Guys, just apply some pressure with your fingers for a minute or so and the adhesive should stick to the screen and close the gap permanently.. probably some manufacturing fault.
I've got a gap at the top and bottom left corner, too.
Already chatted with google and they'll send me a new pixel.
Ordered mine through the google store to germany

This is troublesome but still not widely reported. I keep watching AP and Android Authority for information but all I see are reviews. Hopefully, it was just a bad batch and nothing more. I wouldn't think twice, just return it and replace it.

Problem is then you end up in the OLED Lottery and it's one RMA after another!
On chat with them now. Provided pictures. Currently on hold while they check this further.
I think a uniform gap is the norm to be fair.
Will see what they say.
Edit: if I flag it and they say it's fine, then it causes issues down the line, at least I've flagged it and have a case ID to back me up

Can you snap a quick pic of the gap? I just watched the 3 Youtube reviews posted previously and didn't see a gap although he didn't focus on the sides of the phone. If you have a store nearby with a P5 on display I'd head over there and compare and send it to Google if they try to blow you off.
