[Q] after factory reset, can't transfer files - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

did a factory reset after I was already on Lolli. I couldn't get the WiFi Calling icon to show on the left side of the Notification strip.
I'm thinking I was getting intermittent drops of WiFi Calling, so having the icon back would be helpful to troubleshoot.
All went well. Apps loaded. Phone works, incoming and outgoing. WiFi fine. Icon is there.
But I can't transfer files with either AFT or AirDroid Web, both of which worked just fine earlier today.
I've cleared the cache and delvik. But I'd like to get my docs back on and music.
Tried to repair perms from TWRP, now I'm in a start-up loop.
Fastboot flashed stock recovery then fastboot flashed ota.zip. Waiting for start-up, but never saw the green progress bar.
Am I soft bricked again?

had to go back from scratch. pita.
and no apps auto restore from Play. more pita.
But still can't flash twrp.
error: cannot load 'twrp.zip'
seems I've "lost" root. WTF?

I kept at it and for some reason, I finally got thru.
But I have no idea what was different or what caused the issue, since I don't believe I was changing my methods.

[Q] a problem after installed new ROM (Froyo 2.2)

I installed it yesterday via Kies. after finished, it told me to reboot then I did, When I turned on the phone, it just started as normal with flashing S logo.
10-15 seconds later the screen turned black and the menu and back buttons lights on with a vibration sometimes.
I just cant use 3 buttons to get into any modes or use CMD to get into it. I just bought it last week and never installed any ROMS in it.
Any help, please?
I've had some issues after Kies upgrade... my apps kept crashing and not responding. I think I even had the same problem like you. All I did is a factory reset. Go to Settings -> Privacy and under Personal Data you'll find Factory data reset. Try it. Be carefull before doing a factory reset, try backup your data (phonebook, contacts, messages etc.) Hope it helps
I cant even get into the phone. got stuck at the logo..
the phone will auto reboot... how come you have to reboot it yourself?

Captivate gets stuck with black screen after booting. No response to anything

Phone: Samsung Captivate I-896, with AT&T stock Android 2.2 flashed to it. Rooted and unlocked.
Action: Deleted some *.odex files from Root/Data/App, following a guide to get around the "out of space" message while trying to install software. Cleared Delviks cache directory.
Problem: First restart after above actions(which didn't resolve the out of space message issue), phone shows start-up animations, gets stuck with black screen. Left like this overnight, nothing happens. Vibrates every 50 seconds or so. Respons to hardware Vol+ press with the home/back/menu backlight. Otherwise, no response to anything, black screen(backlight on). Does not receive phone calls. I do not know for sure if the action listed above is the one that caused this situation, but I assume so since it was the last action taken before the issue appeared.
Solutions attempted: Tried every possible permutation/combination of buttons/usb cable/etc/ restarts etc. listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858765&page=1, except Jig. The phone would not go into recovery or DL mode.
Question.
Am I correct in assuming that forcing the phone into recovery mode and reflashing a new system(or reflashing the old one) is the only way to get the phone to work again?
There is no way to "soft-reset" the phone, with all settings reverted back to stock, if it does not boot up completely?

Sounds pretty accurate. You'll have to get a jig to get in download mode, flash stock Odin KK4 to fix w/e happened during your testing.
Thanks Bwolf. I just tried ADB console on a different computer and it connects to the device just fine in spite of black screen. I guess I had one thing right, USB DEBUGGING enabled before this whole deal.
Question: is there any way I can restore the phone using the console without wiping everything?

Make a backup with ADB.
Once that's done, push download mode with it and get Odin KK4 (without bootloaders). You'll have to start from there to fix w/e went wrong.
You don't have to wipe your sd doing so but you will lose your apps and such. If you backed up your phone with your Play Store account, it will re-download your apps as you're done booting up.
To get back up where you were, grab Corn Kernel, flash it with Odin 1.87 and then follow the full instructions of the ROM you wanna use.

NEED HELP - Android gone black

Moto X 2014: unrooted with bootloader unlocked. It's running Stock 5.1 and I haven't messed with anything on it. I gave it to my Dad after a few months of using it, so I factory reset it and gave it to him, 2 weeks later he tells me it has stopped working. It boots up normally, but from then on it is black, I can access minor parts of the OS such as the power off menu, the camera (by shaking) and Moto Display, but everything else doesn't work. I have never seen anything like this before, and I am well accustomed to flashing custom ROMs and rooting Android. If it comes down to it I will factory reset it or flash stock, but I can't even plug it into my PC and retrieve any files. Anyone have any idea whats gone wrong?
I have attached a video demonstrating what's happened to help diagnose the problem.

If you search the forum here for "black screen" it has happened to other people as well on stock 5.1. Supposedly the fix is a factory reset.

Ok, It was just really surprising thats all. I will factory reset then. Thanks
I am having the exact same issue. Have you had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a few people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I couldn't retreive any data from the phone, I can confirm however that a factory reset does fix the issue. The Android automatic backup does work in the broken state so I did manage to restore my settings and apps. But the internal sd card was wiped upon factory reseting. Just an idea of the top of my head: Try running adb backup and see if that works, and then unlocking the bootloader, flashing twrp, restoring the backup, and finally transfering the internal sd card data to a mounted drive using twrp. Thats just a stab in the dark and i dont have the phone on me to test it. Give it a try and lets hope Motorola will fix this bug soon.
Ok, thanks. I did try adb backup, but adb won't recognize the device when it's "booted" & sitting at the blank screen, and the stock recovery doesn't give full adb access. I'm currently looking into the various data recovery options to maybe pull some stuff off after reseting. It's really only a few files that I need, so maybe that will work?

Unfortunately the internal SD card mounts using MTP and not like a flash drive, so using the usual methods through Windows to recover wont work. However you could try and restore your internal sd card using this solution: http://goo.gl/OKdV14
As for accessing adb through recovery, you could try this method: http://goo.gl/5T7bhq
Hopefully one of these methods should work, so you can at least recover some of your files.
I had the same problem today. I tried to backup a twrp backup I have made few weeks ago but I still had the black screen. The only solution is to factory reset...
Happily I could have saved my data when I was on TWRP. Anyone knows how to restore sms from the data I have saved ?

XT1068 stock fw fde trouble

Hi,
I've got XT1068, updated to 6.0 Marshmallow. In the past, I got it FDE (full disk encrypted).
Few days ago I unlocked my bootloader to gain root access on my phone using http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/simplified-modifying-boot-img-t3317605
everything went as expected, but by unlocking it wiped all userdata, so I wanted to re-encrypt the phone (and the external SD especially). But now, encryption fails, telling me "encryption fails, you have to reset your phone" each time I start the encryption, ending in a userdata-wipe.
So I thought about going back to stock fw.
After locking the bootloader and applying stock 6.0 FW, I tried again to encrypt the phone, but I am still unable to do so.
Can someone help me giving some suggestions, how I can fix that behavior and (mainly) how to get some errors/debug shown?
When selecting "encrypt now", the green android symbol with black background is shown for 5seconds, then the phone reboots, shows the bootscreen with the M, then it restarts again (after ~30minute) and shows after another 20seconds the message that something went wrong encrypting.
Ok it seems that I found out the problem in my case by myself.
Instead of using mfastboot.exe -w to delete the data and cache partition, I used recovery mode to delete userdata. I did it twice, since the first run, returns some errors.
After reset, I started the phone and got the fresh-install screen. I skipped mobile and wifi networking and did not entered google account details. Then I restarted the phone and waited for ~5minutes and tried to encrypt - everything works. Everytime I started encryption without waiting for some time it failed.
I hope I can save someone else some time, since factory reset takes ~15minutes each time you do it.

Bad looking brick. Device stops and keeps restarting at recovery screen.

So... I found my old XT890 laying around in my house and i decided to pick it up to see if it works.
I turned it on and immediately appeared an OTA update, so i went there and downloaded it.
When i installed it, the phone restarted and is now looping on the recovery screen (Android system recovery <3e>). I tried factory resetting it, wiping every data to see if it solved anything, but it didn't work.
I can make it to the fastboot menu by using the volume keys, but no option actually seems to work, only "Switch console [NULL: null]" that changes to "Switch console [default: ttyMFD3]". Wondering if that does a thing.
I've tried some solutions from threads here, but none of them seem to work on my phone. RSD Lite looks like it cannot recognize anything, and drivers and "unbrickers" does not work on me too. (Am I doing something wrong?)
Is my phone recoverable? It's the second time I update a phone via OTA and it loops on the recovery menu.
Facing a similar issue, death by OTA update, did you find a solution?
