The covering on the bottom of the z1 (Loudspeaker/microphone) area got removed. Now it looks like my phone is no longer water proof. Where can I get that covering? Will be covered under warranty? I've used my z1 for over a year...

It is waterproof. You can take it to a Sony service center and wait for them to repair it (should take about two weeks) and pay for the privilege, or get the cover from Witrigs, AliExpress, etc and do it yourself.

Thank you so much for the info, my speaker grill was loose for quite some time and came off a week ago. Good to know it's only a 2 dollar replacement. I understand the phone is still waterproof without the grill? Thanks once again, also the person who posted the link.

Yes, you don't need to worry about the water resistance: it's still water resistant without the grill. Mine was dropped into water, washed etc many times without the damned grill while I waited for the replacement to come from China.
This is one of the issues with the Z1, its build quality isn't top notch. Mine lost the grill and the power button ring in less than 18 months.

My power button is REALLY squishy. I'm scared. Using gravitybox to preserve it right now....no servicing in India
Thanks everyone! I ordered a loupspeaker mesh online. I'm not sure how to fix the new one as the exposed area has a lot of dust and may have lost it's adhesive ability altogether. Any info on how I can fix it myself?
I think they usually come with an adhesive tape already attached..so should just be able to peel the back off and stick it on.

Hello,
A few days ago I noticed a black spot on all my pictures. I feared the worst and thought I had a faulty camera sensor. But then the black spot started to move when I shook my phone....
Doing some research seems to confirm it's dust under my lens...
Did anyone else get the same problem?
I didn't take the extended warranty from Docomo. So I suppose I am screwed?
I doubt I can take the phone apart to clean it myself without completely ruining the waterproof aspect of it?
I think the phone has a 2 year warranty so you don't need the extended warranty to claim.
Phil
Yeah I have that issue, but my dust seems to be a bit harder to move. A bit surprised by it. Also initially thought it was a sensor issue, but then it disappeared after a couple of weeks and got replaced by two much smaller dots. A bit weird but I'm not too fussed about it.
Attached some shots before the dust, during the dust, and after the dust.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2
Yes was about to say that it will not be dirt, indeed dust is more obvious
Just for everyone's info:
I brought the phone back to the docomo shop, they said they would open it up and clean it.
If the insides of the case would have been bent (from sitting on it or dropping it) and that would have caused the dust to enter, they would have charged me 5000 JPY (around 50 USD) to repair it. Apparently that wasn't the case.
So they cleaned my lens, and they still put a new case on my phone. Which is great, cause my case was chipped. They also renewed my screen or at least the sony protectors on it, because all microscratches are gone! All for the exact cost of free.
All in all, I got pretty lucky. Just had to live with an LG Optimus LTE for 1 week, damn torture if you come from the xperia z

Sigh...
I can resist looking at hot girls, but if they are too hot, I will have to give in eventually. Therefor I'm hot girl resistant and not hot girl proof.
Maybe you will understand it this way. Being resistant to something doesn't mean that you're immune to it.
I always have my phone in my pockets without cases, but am surprised that this happened with this phone which is marketed as water resistant and dust ... "proof".
Few weeks ago it seems that some dust got on the CCD, and it's quite apparent in pictures. Anyone had similar issues ? (see attached picture) Basically all pictures I take are pretty bad because there is clear black dots that have covered the CCD. The dots move around every few days... unfortunately. But it seems that they will not move off the CCD.
I"m guessing this must of happened in factory, and it's moving around inside the phone. The water resistance is still quite stellar.
If it happened in the factory, then return it to Sony. I think for this instance it'll be a free replacement.

I've the same problem too. 2 big spots that look like flies, I only noticed it the other day when taking a picture against a white wall :cyclops:
Don't know what to do...
I'm not sure if they can test if the flaps and things were breached by dust like they can with water. So surely it'd be a free replacement?

Would love a free replacement, but bought it 2nd hand, (maybe third?), does the warranty still stand then?
Warranty is tied to the phone not the purchaser so should be, yeah. Tweet them, email them or call them to clarify.

It has been discussed many times..
For some it is because of a heat issue.. That makes the glue go loose and dust comes in..
I have gotten mine repaired.. No problems anymore

Well the phone will be going back for "repairs" which is good.
However I did ask specifically if rooting the phone voids the warranty, and it does. So time to go back to stock (how?), will post back with the results in 14 business days.
The longer I'm having this phone, the more disillusioned I am becoming with it.
I sold my iPhone 5 in September and 'upgraded' to the Z1...
Yet despite needing initial time to get over the pathetic viewing angles, I developed a real fondness for the phone...
But that honeymoon period soon ended... Two weeks later the phone had proven that it was the biggest scratch magnet I ever owned. The perfectly hard wearing Dragontrail glass is covered by a super scratch prone ASF, the aluminium frame has lots of ugly scuff marks on it despite taking great care of the phone and only keeping it in a soft pocket - alone - and today the grille bubbled up and came off the speaker at the bottom.
By the way it is nothing but a piece of cut out mesh, fabric essentially, that has been glued down with what seems to have become really tacky glue. Clearly not water resistant as it's advertised.
I've put it back but it wouldn't stick. I really need to send it in for a warranty repair but I'm leaving Europe for 5 months on Monday so I can't!
So the Z1 is a poorly constructed phone made to appear as if it is of a premium build quality and Sony did not build it to look good in a month, or two or 12 down the line let alone two years.
Who in their right mind ok'd the ASF what a hideous idea?!
Anyway I digress, has anybody else's speaker grille come off or bubbled up?

Use superglue. The grill has nothing to do with the waterproofness.
It will still be under warranty when you get back. Send it then?
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
I can't superglue it back as it now has a kink in it... And just looks bad.
A warranty repair it is then when I come back. Thanks for the advice anyhow.
As long as my waterproofing is not affected I'm gonna live with it.
But yes I am fundamentally disappointed with some of the materials used to make this phone... and at the top of my list is the ASF with the logo baked in...
This is just yet another thing...

Didn't somebody's silver ring around the power button also just fall off? These things shouldn't happen...

My speaker grill just started pealing off. Noticed when it got caught on something.
Does this actually affect whether it's waterproof or not? I'm imagining not, as it's just a thin piece of plastic, either way I'll be more careful with the phone now.
Mine isn't under warranty because I've had it so long, and it's rooted too...

@corydor13 @Johann_London
I've noticed today, that my speaker grill is a bit "wobbly" which means that if I put my finger on it I can move it a bit to the left and right and also up and down. I'm not sure if it was there from the beginning (I have the phone since September) but I doubt it. Is this "normal" or already considered a case for warranty?
I'm afraid now the grill might come off soon! I have a case on the phone and always have it alone in one pocket and handle it with care so that shouldn't be the cause.
What did you do? Sent it in under warranty?!

That's basically how the problem started for me.
After a while of trying to keep it on, I got annoyed with the fact that it kept falling off, so just left it off.
Haven't sent it back for repairs or anything as I don't see the point.
It's been soaked since and doesn't have any problems..(yet).
So it is still waterproof? But even if so, it's very disappointing that this happens after only 9 months and without the grill it looks ugly, like it was used for ten years.
I also have that strange, squeaky vibration motor sound. I can live with the former, but both defects combined are almost too much.
I'm going to talk with the Sony chat tomorrow and see what they'll say.

It's not a problem, they used a cheap glue to stick that grill under the phone and in time, hot temperatures and maybe water, the glue just lost his consistency. Try to keep it on or just apply some drop of good glue and do not close the speaker (LOL)
BTW, I can move mine too but until stay there I do not touch it.
I'm going to post this thing that happen to me yesterday I think I was the only one and I found this, yesterday I saw how my grille can move and I was like , I take great care of the phone, doesn't have scratches of any type, and now this.... I will try to remove it very very careful and apply some kind of glue I have, and see what happen
A little too late to this thread, but just posting my own experience. The little speaker mesh literally fell off of my Xperia Ray. After it comes off, you can not hear anything on the speaker phone when talking to someone and Music, although loud comes with very high frequencies. To fix this, you take black electrical tape, cut just a small part and stick it over the plastic, then use a clear plastic tape to cover that along the bottom. The sound is not like the original but still works better than no mesh. The in-Call volume of these phones is a major disappointment. You are right, the build quality of most android phones is junk. What the Android world needs badly is the iPhone build quality.
Well I'm back with some things to say, some friends I know seem that doesnt have this problem at all, weird, after some time I finally removed the grille it was just holded with strong by a very small side, I try glue that have a color like orange/brown (I dont remember the brand) it work ok but just for 2 weeks, after that it starts to move again, so now I try a Gel glue and it seems that work excellent, it doesn't move at all, with the other glue it holds, but it can move a little, seems that this glue is the solution, and it says in the boxx is water resistant so, better for me, I have to say that you have to ve very careful because a little drop in the mic and nobody will hear you again, the same for the speaker, so far I dont have problems :victory: so if you found a gel based glue in a little stick, try it if you have this problem

Hi
Does anyone know where I can buy this part (black botton cover)?
I have tried to find a place that sells it and I could not find one.
However, I replace the screen on my phone (Xperia Z1s C6916) about three months ago, and only ripped the flex cable connecting the audio jack and sensor. When I did that, I bought a screen that was already connected to a frame. However, I forgot to transfer the mesh covering the speaker. I did not know it was just a mesh piece on the outside until now... I took the phone apart, yet again, ripped the flex cable connecting the microphone... Why are parts for this thing so expensive!?

Mine fell off yesterday. I bought mine in September. I'm glad the water proofing hasn't been affected by it (going by others' accounts, I'm too chicken to try it myself.) I was really upset cause I bought it only for the waterproofing and the other features were a plus. I'll super glue it then. India is getting too hot, the glue melted off.
Yeah mine fell off too, it's been off for a while now.
My USB flap fell off too, though it was probably my own fault over using it without care. So I guess mine isn't waterproof any more ? :victory:
Since my frame is bent and my back glass is broken I really have to replace them as the dust got between back glass and the camera rendering camera with flash useless.
I'm thinking about replacing it myself, but I'm worried if it's still going to be waterproof after I replace it.
Have any of you guys replaced the back glass by yourself? How's the waterproofness after you did that?
Water resistence will be gone for sure and back glass wont stick for long.time to time you have to push it back.
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm talking about replacing it. Both bent frame and back glass. Have you done this?
No, they will keep the water-proof capablility of the phone. First they will replace the back, remove all the old glue and rubber gasket then replace all with new glue, etc...then use high compression machine press the back cover tight to the glue. Atleast that is the process of replace back cover in my local Sony center, not sure it's applied to all....And after repair they will allow you to put the phone into water to test...
FFS
My adhesive on the back just completely stopped holding the back glass. I can take it out by shaking the device a bit or even by picking it up. I'll be sending it for the repairs...
No more Z1 development, really.

Yeah. The worst thing is that I have to ship the phone on my own. I mean wrapping, talking with DHL and stuff like that to get it to authorised sony service ... -_-
Good thing is that although I'll pay a lot for the replacement of the frame and the back it will be waterproof again.
I'll send it in this weekend or at the begging of the next week.
If anyone would be interested in the state of my Z1 then here's what's wrong with it:
USB flap fell off again.
Back glass is broken
Main frame is bent
Middle frame is cracked
To fix it I'd have to buy:
Glue for middle frame, main frame
Back glass
USB flap
Middle frame
I'll propably fix it myself becaus the cost of doing this in the service would be propably as high as a new Z1. Too bad I'm not rich so I can't buy those parts yet.
If anyone is interested then I finally made pictures of my phone. At least the screen and the electronic hardware is allright.

I only had Xperia Play apart from Z1, flashed xperia S just few days ago, lol ^^
I didn't test it myself, but if you buy a genuine back glass assembly (that includes glue, you can buy this from, for example www.witrigs.com) and replace it properly, wait a week or so for the glue to align and stick properly it should still be waterproof. I did replace almost every part of my Z1, that is camera, back microphone, back glass - 2 times, minijack with proximity sensor, battery, main frame with all the buttons and flaps, speaker mesh and propably something else I don't really remember anymore. It doesn't matter anyway, what matters here is that if you replace middle frame - take close attention to the speaker mesh hole - the one from a phone has some sort of a gasket there, whereas the replacement one - doesn't and you can't really buy it separately. I bought the middle frame assembly from witrigs and it was also missing that gasket. Also, speaker mesh from witrigs is different from the one that was in the phone. These parts render my phone not waterproof anymore and I don't think you can buy replacements for it that would still make the phone waterproof, even if replaced with surgically perfect precision.
TL;DR
Back glass assembly (complete genuine replacement part with glue, nfc, camera etc. already on it) replacement, if done properly, may not cause your phone to lose it's waterproofness. At least from my experience.
Replacing main frame and speaker mesh, even new genuine will void it. Not because there were some mistakes in replacing them, they simply don't have all of the elements that the parts originally shipped with a new phone have. Replacing them will definitely remove its waterproofness. (with all parts from witrigs.com, that is very trusted to ship genuine, new replacement parts.
Just posting this so people googling around could find the answer.

I have read lots of threads and comments on the Internet regarding screen cracking on the z3c but most are dating back to early 2015.
As I am now considering buying a Z3C does anyone know if improvements have been made by Sony to address these issues for the 2016 models?
Thanks for any comments.
Nothing has changed. On the bright side, replacing said-glass is very cheap and easy to do. On the minus-side. Say bye-bye to any form of water-resistance. This long with the Z3C: I've grown to accept this phone won't be water-resistant unless I use a case because the seals and IP-68 rating is only for fresh-water and the rating completely depends on the ability of flap-seals and sealant of the back cover to to do its job. I hope I can convince you to disregard water-resistance factor in your purchase. Notably because Sony won't cover any repairs if the damage is a result of water-damage(personal experience). That way, you can swap back glass covers as you please. They go for like $2.
My z3c screens right top corner today unglued. Lasted for about 8 months since purchase, without case, without any water interference. Still under warranty, sending it for repair.

Thanks for the reply, if I understand you correctly replacing the back glass is not a big issue and is cheap, but what about the front screen? I did have a quick search around the net and it looks quite complicated and expensive to replace the front one.
Have you done the front one yourself?
Thanks.

I service my own phones often enough to kind of say that replacing your own front screen is easy to do if you're starting out with this phoneYou take out the front-screen the same way you take apart the back screen.. As long as your motherboard components are in good condition like the USB Port, antenna, SIM/MicroSD slots, and the battery(cause this is glued very well to the motheboard), nearly everything on the Z3 Compact is expendable and easily replaceable.

I've been using Z3C (15W33) since early september and this phone has really rough life. I mean working in very hard conditions (very cold outside > pretty warm inside the house) and I never really cared about it even when I know there are problems with the glass. Also I have a custom s-line case and that's the only protection... I dropped the phone twice or three times...
but it's still running pretty nice and there are no signs of any damage, the glass is more than OK
