so black screens on my phone look like LCD blacks and glow in the darkness. it's extremely noticeable (i'll get some pics soon) and it happens everywhere, not just in android -- the galaxy note 4 splash screen on boot shows the same bright blacks, as do the backgrounds of twrp and download mode. i'm completely perplexed, i could see some kind of android mis-configuration affecting colors in the OS but i cannot understand why it would be happening outside of android at all.
my rom is cmremix 3.3 with 4/22 slim gapps, i've done a full wipe+reinstall to no avail. all screen-related settings in color control and kernel adiutor are set to default.
any ideas??

Flash a few rom and see if it the same. My blacks are black so it might be what the devs used in the rom. Ask the dev what color code he used and see the color wheel what it looks like in other phones if u enter the color code.
BAD ASS NOTE 4
the problem is persistent across ROMs as well. i tried a lollipop touchwiz rom and then a stock firmware through odin, no change.

Is your phone a clone? Most clones come with LCD screens instead of AMOLED.
for real? i got my phone from a t-mobile store and it's been working fine since december. two days ago the screen **** the bed sometime after i clean flashed cmremix 3.3 from 3.1. also, please tell me what kind of fake phone runs custom roms for the original phone.

If you say the phone is an original from the T-Mobile store then my question would be have you ever replaced the screen because of a crack?
My dad cracked his Note 3's screen once and bought a replacement screen from eBay. Little did he know the replacement screen wasn't an OEM replacement. It was a cheap knockoff which caused the screen to look a bit washed out. He never noticed it until I told him.
My first thought is also that you got a clone or a unit with an aftermarket screen, but since you say N4 roms install & run fine, your screen may have just somehow gone bad.
Try odining back to bone stock & see if the issue persists. If it does- warranty exchange.

nope, i replaced the housing but didn't mess with the screen or mobo. this problem didn't arise until weeks after the housing replacement as well so i'm loathe to blame it; i would have to agree with the other posters in this thread who suggested the screen is simply broken. i'll try to contact samsung/t-mobile and then decide if i want to replace it or not.

will a warranty exchange work if i've tripped the knox flag? i restored the stock firmware+recovery through odin last night and still it hasn't gone away.

From what I've heard they don't care 99.5% of the time.

I had to exchange mine for a funky screen too and they didn't say a word about knox. I've never had any trouble getting exchanges on tripped devices, ever. You should be fine, just odin back to stock before you send it back.

ok so these days... i been using RA. alot probably flashing 30 times a day
because of the wifi problem.
the trackball decided to stop working
when i scroll it up it wont work.
scrolling down , left, right works.
(my phone is unlocked) <- i know it avoids the warranty.
so..i decided to take chance and call HTC about warranty
this is what im gonna tell them
that my wifi isnt working
and i didnt find it out till now cause i never used wifi, and used 3G. and recently i canceled my plan and i dont have data plan anymore
so when i tried to use wifi it didntt work , and tell them i already did hard reset and soft reset and even called my router's company and changed the setting of the router and they told me that it has to be the hardware problem of my phone
So, this is my plan
1, call HTC
2, tell them wifi isnt working and its a hardware problem
i have that strange screen touch issuse too when i hold the phone tightly and try to touch the screen it doenst work, and it thinks im touching the bottom of the screen so it goes into menu and dialer when im clicking the middle of the screen, or vibrate cause it thinks im clicking the capacitive button.
3. i'll demand a replacement, and when i send my phone back hopefully it will cover by warranty( i know unlocking the phone avoids the warranty but i know many people have succeded getting replacement eventhough their phone was unlocked)
4. when they receive mine and it turns out its not covered by warranty are they going to charge my 500 dollar.
or find out that my trackball is broke.
what things do that ask? when i call them ? did anyone go through the process? do they require credit card number and all?
bought my phone through craigs about 3 weeks ago i think
lost the number of the seller..( that son of [email protected]#@# told me everything was working when i got it the wifi wasnt working)
EDIT: should i just complain about the screen?
i doubt they're gonna test the wifi and all.
does anyone knows how they inspect their device?
in what awy do i have higher chance getting replacement without issue.
Complain about the screen not working properly which is hardware issue
complain about the wifi <--- could b cause of rooting and messing up idk..
well..i already googled it and trackball isnt covered by warranty..
i have AMOLED screen but..dont really care about if i get SLCD or not..
so just your trackball doesnt work?
just flash everything back to stock recovery partition and all, then call them and say your trackball stopped working

It wont be a problem. I had trackball problems too and got a replacement by the end of the week. They don't care about your bootloader. Try it. It's as painless as possible. Stop worrying.

update #2 nov-30 2010
got my replacement from HTC it looks like they sent me a brand new spanking phone
no dusts under the screen, no scratches what so ever, everything works perfectly
, and it looks have it has new parts(which means SLCD)
my old nexus one had dark grey-ish trackball and this one have white-ish light trackball. it looks like the notification light is brighter.
is going to send my old nexus one tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
hopefully they wont charge me.
will update soon
So they send you the replacement first? When u send ur old one do they fix it or do u keep the replacement. The vibrate on mine is screwed up so im thinking of sending it also

When u call them, you have 2 choices, you can either do swap or do repair
in my case i did swap. they will require your credit card number
and you will have $530, pending on your credit card, you have to send it back your old n1 if you want the charge to be dropped
or you can just send your n1,which will take longer..
Rather than creating another thread for a similar issue...I am having issues with my power button. Sometimes it takes about 5 tries to get the screen to come on.
My question is, are they swapping with N1's or does the AT&T version get something else? I have heard about someone receiving a Captivate instead and I do not want a branded / locked phone.

just a question, why do people dislike the SLCD version vs the AMOLED? Isnt SLCD better with battery life and easier to see in sunlight?

AMOLED produces more vibrant and richer colors and SLCD creates a sharper picture and a warmer tone,
as far as i know amoled is a little bit better in sunlight, not by much. Its not the screen but its how htc makes thier glass.its like glossy and stuff)
and no amoled have better battery life

I was one of the impatient people that tried to cancel their order for the developer edition (sent an email) and ran out on Friday morning and bought the ATT version. The next I noticed that orders were being shipped (mine being one of them). Long story short, I rented the ATT one for the $35 restocking fee for the weekend and now have my dev. edition in my hands.
I noticed one person mention a yellow tint to thier screen, and when I compared my phone to the ATT, sure enough it was very apparent. I have heard and come up with a few reasons why looking around online. I want to get your thoughts on what is causing this, if it will go away and if you can see it in yours. With that said I compared to my wife's S3 and it is still a load better than her screen in every way.
1. The phone was just recently built and the glue is still drying - not sure if I buy that one but it is a theory
2. Defective screens - could be, but I would think that would be easy to spot in any quality control process... no dead pixels that I can see (or stuck) but a uniform yellow tint across the entire screen
3. Could it be the ATT software tweaks that make thier's whiter? I almost feels like the "temperature" of the screen has just shifted toward a yellow / warm. Could this be the default screen settings and ATT actually did something GOOD to the phone rather than just installing apps, etc. Do they even have this ability?
Either way - I am going to keep the developer phone. If it is glue it will dry, if it is defective I will wait for stock to build up and exchange with LetsTalk, and if it is something ATT did, I will wait for a custom ROM to allow me to configure the settings.
Curious to everyone else's thoughts... and if they notice the same thing (or are able to compare to T-Mobile, etc)

Well I'm not owning a HTC phone, but I had a yellow tint issue with my Xperia S(it happened to the fresh new ones, just after it was launched, some said the same thing you said at 1. (glue still drying), but the effects are still visible now, and the phone is 1 year old already. So, it may be something similar here. I am sorry for not being able to confirm as I don't have the phone, but I'm giving some info...

The Dev edition is Warmer while the ATT is cooler. I can clearly see the difference. I'll have to compare the dev edition when it arrives tom to the T-mobile version.
I have an AT&T version and a 32GB unlocked and the color temperature of the 32GB unlocked is definitely a little warmer. I don't have any professional instruments so I can't measure the white point and tell you whether the AT&T version is too cold or the unlocked version is too warm, but honestly, if I didn't put them side by side, I don't think I would have noticed.
As to the cause, it could be simple device to device variance. Maybe some AT&T versions have a warmer color temperature as well. Or maybe the AT&T is using a panel from a different manufacturer. Or it could be the firmware. The AT&T version is running 1.26 and the unlocked version is on 1.29 with a slightly newer kernel. Maybe the warmer temperature is part of the newer software and the AT&T version will be that way too when it gets the update. Who knows.
I got the 32 gb unlocked today and it looks cooler like the att version in the pictures
There was a thread posted before talking about how the htc one may have different screen manufacturer's. So some may have a Samsung screen, other sharp etc etc.

Last night my phone got a text and when I took it out my pocket the screen would not turn on. It was just blank. The buttons next to the home button still light up and the LED light still flashes. Vibrate still works etc. I took the battery out and out it back in... nope the screen is buggered. It has no water damage and it hasn't been dropped etc.
Just thought I would post this in case anyone has any similar problems.
I'm so angry If I'm being honest... my phone store wouldn't even send it away for me... they asked me to phone customer services and pack it and send it away myself. I have exams etc so its something I refused to do. Thankfully another store helped me out but I have never been so angry at a combination of companies. I have already spend £100 up front for the phone. Now I have no phone and apparently there is none in stock so I'll have to wait until they are ready. Not even given a replacement.

I had a similar issue with my first S4. It randomly rebooted numerous times and I had it for a little under a day. I took it back the next day and swapped out my white S4 with a black one and all has been well thus far. My buddy also had an issue with his screen as well. He went to put a case on it and the screen flickered and died. He too had to get a replacement. Your situation is a little more drastic but it seems we aren't the only ones with screen issues.

It is ridiculous that the screens are faulty in the first place but if they could just give me a new one like yours I would have been as happy as larry. Did you lose all the apps etc you had downloaded? I bought ice age and everything =/
apparently my phone company only replaces new items within 7 days. If my screen broke tonight instead of last night I would not have been given a replacement and would have got a "re-furbished" one. ARRRHHHH I would have torn the place down if they had said that to me!
I've had got mine 4/29 and have had no issue except for that lag when to much crap is open in the background.

I had my phone for about 2 days and I noticed that the screen would flicker. Since it was my first Amoled I just figured it was something I would have to get used too. Well the flicker started to get worse and even made it difficult to read anything on the phone. So I took it into sprint and told them I wanted a new one, not some returned or beat up phone.
There was a problem with the screen after all and they did give me a new in box phone. Haven't had an issue since. With any new product it just seems you might get lucky.
Is there any fix for the auto-brightness glitch yet?
I want my screen very bright all the time, but it still dims when I'm in a dark room even if autobrightness is off.

I've emailed Samsung a few times over this issue and they want me to return the phone for analysis. They can't tell me whether it's a hardware or software problem.
This is my second s6 edge and they both have the same problem. Might just sell it.
It's such a shame because it's a great phone apart from it's almost brilliant screen.

Hi, yes I've seen that but he never posted any proof!
This is my first AMOLED device, and probably my last. I got my nexus 6 a few weeks ago and have been using it moderately. Screen brightness never went above 50%. I already have a very noticeable burn on the bottom bar. Unfortunately have no warranty so I cant return it. Very disappointed. Didnt expect to find such a problem on such a great device. Is there a way to fix it? How bad can this get in the future? I would appreciate someone with such an experience to give me some advice.
If you don't mind and still have warranty, send it to Motorola.
What I got was just like new in a retail box.
I described my experience including video at the end of the page here
http://androidforums.com/threads/screen-burn-in.883020/page-5
I noticed it the first time I looked (with gray screen) which was after I had the phone about a month. I've now had the phone 6+ months and situation is the same...Only noticeable when I look carefully with the right background. So my concern level now is much less than when I first noticed it.
I don't bother with the app you set up to age/burn your nav bar at full brightness for awhile to even things out. I do occasionally run chrome inverted in order to give a crude dark theme (good for battery) which has the extra benefit of aging/burning the nav bar area that doesn't usually age...helps to even things out

Well as long as the current quality doesnt deteriorate, I could live with it. But considering the amount of burn in just one month, Im skeptical about it in the long run.

I have had my device for over a year and no burn in whats so ever. Not even a little bit. Makes me wonder what your moderate use is.
So the device is used, if you've got no warranty?
@JonesL: He likely did buy used. The warranty only applies to the original purchaser, thus no warranty.

They didn't require me any proof for the replacement.
Now Motorola is a part of Lenovo, so not sure.
I'm sure. The fact Motorola is owned by Lenovo is just as irrelevant now as when they were owned by Google. The piece of paper that spells out the warranty terms and conditions is what applies here, and that warranty does not transfer with the device when the device is sold to a second user by the first. If they processed a replacement for you, that was kind of them.
I bought mine new the month it came out and mine has burn also.. I have the 6p,note5,v10, but I swap out this phone for the 6p every now and then.. Point being it's not used much and still has burn in
All amoled screens should be used wisely, because over time the parties held most heated they become prone to yellow, while the share held duller, like the navbar and statusbar, will stay with the most "cool colors".
The solution is simple: use the EXTENDED DESKTOP mode SINCE THE FIRST DAY (present in almost all the custom rom).
In this way, in the time, the display deteriorates evenly , and no one pays attention!
Maybe after one year or two we have to change a bit the colors and make them cooler.
sad to say but i also have the burn in now.. got my shamu last october and its noticeable when you flash a rom and during initial set up where whites are pretty present and the gray part on the nav bar and status bar is so obvious with some hints on the clock, wifi symbols and signal and on the navbar some back home and recents button shadows present... too bad..
Now it is too late .... But if it is still under warranty should replace you display...
If with new display follow the advice since day one, you never have a problem!
Sorry for my english.....
