i bought a south american XT1053 on ebay assuming i could unlock the bootloader. when i got it, it had a nextel sim card ready to be installed. got an at&t one from my carrier and it's on LTE but motorola does not allow unlocking the bootloader. back on ebay it goes...
while i have it i'm happy to look into the bands, though i'd imagine it's the same as the t-mobile xt1053 and the gsm dev edition.
Very strange. According to motorola site all Latin America models have unlockable bootloader. Can you please check supported bands?

How do I check supported bands? All I can find in Settings is that I seem to currently be on LTE band 13.
Yeah, that page might imply all of Latin America can unlock their bootloaders but I certainly can't. Got my OEM unlock code via fastboot, and the unlock site says my device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking. The box it came in clearly says XT1053. The label is in spanish. The SIM card says Nextel. In settings it shows the System version is 139.7.30.ghost_row.NII.en.MX. I think NII is basically Nextel (NII also shows up the motorola site as the carrier for the device it sees I have), a carrier in Mexico.

Maybe my situation is a fluke. Maybe something funky with this device but it sure looks like a regular Mexico Nextel device. The box, it's contents and the device all point to a carrier unlocked Mexico Nextel Moto X. Works fine on AT&T LTE but since I can't unlock the bootloader, the only benefit to me is the lack of carrier branding. FWIW I got mine on ebay from http://www.ebay.com/usr/marisolmachado and he was a great seller. Exactly as described, quick shipping, responsive to all of my questions. Just can't unlock the bootloader (which I didn't ask them about).
Does anybody else have this version?

I have, just bought it this week and was also unable to unlock the bootloader. I had to root with pwnmymoto and supersu... I guess we're on the same boat trying to wait for Motorola owning up or someone creating a bootstrap

Whoa! I just bought the same phone from the same seller! I checked to see his previous auction and it was yours!
I wonder if mine is the same as yours. My system version is 139.7.30.ghost_row.NII.en.MX
No idea what that means. Sure as heck hope we can unlock the bootloader on these. Yeah, he was a great seller, I got mine in two days.
-Collin-
This seller also sells Nextel model. Be aware
Just wanted to add that I just checked and mine is not bootloader unlockable either. I have the same Nextel version as the previous poster. This is very unfortunate and now I question whether we will see the camera update. Or when. Darn, had high hopes for this one.

Just a thought...I tried unlocking the bootloader many times and the motorola site told me I could not...after searching, someone here said that you can't even have spaces in the unlock code...so be very sure that you paste all the numbers and to not leave spaces after them as I did and unlocked fine. BTW I tried like 3 times before and the 4th time I didn't paste the numbers, I just did it manually. Hope that helps.

You have the XT1053 - either the T-Mobile (GSM unlocked) variant, or the GSM Developer edition.
If you look on the back near the bottom, you should see "XT1053" in very small letters. Might need a magnifying glass to make it out.

Sounds like the Dev Edition comes with a black front and should say it on the back as well, so mine must just be the T-Mobile version.

The Developer edition ONLY comes with a black front and white back.
If yours isn't that color, it isn't the DEV edition. No worries though....they are EXACTLY the same device. Only difference: While both can have their bootloaders unlocked for free via Moto's website, only the DEV edition retains its warranty after being unlocked.
Those of you who own Moto X Dev Ed, if you could help me with some info from your devices it may give insight into unlocking the VZW and AT&T Moto X.
If you could, run fastboot oem get_unlock_data and let me know if the first part of the bootloader unlock data before the first # is your IMEI followed by a zero or something else. You don't need to tell me your IMEI of course, just whether or not the first part is your IMEI or your IMEI plus some number and if so, what is the last number? Is it zero?
If it is not the IMEI plus zero, is it the MEID followed by 2 zeros? Or something else?
Again, you don't need to tell me the IMEI or the MEID.
Thanks so much to all who help!!!!!!
You realize that the bootloader has already been bypassed with Sunshine right? AFAIK, it works to unlock any and all current 2013 Moto X models. And a relatively new member asking for IMEI data doesn't seem odd or suspicious at all...

Sunshine works on 4.4.3 and below. It doesn't work on 4.4.4. Jcase said future Sunshine (3.0) wont support Moto X on 4.4.4, and I haven't seen him post that he changed his mind.

Go back and reread my post. I specifically said I don't want anyone's IMEI. I was only asking for the IMEI SV, which from what I can gather is simply the IMEI software version. It doesn't identify the device at all. My IMEI SV is 00 - I posted a screen shot of it.

Thanks, I don't have a SIM card in my Dev Ed so maybe that is why I am seeing that. I will pop a SIM card in the dev ed and see if that changes anything.
Edited - I put an inactive SIM card in my Dev Ed and now I see the MEID, IMEI and ICCID but no IMEI SV. Thanks for your feedback!

I have edited my OP since now I know that the issue with my Dev Ed was that I didn't have a SIM card in it.
Could you please run fastboot oem get_unlock_data and let me know if the first part of the bootloader unlock data (BUD) that is returned is your IMEI + 0 or your MEID + 00? Or something else.
Again, I am not asking you for your IMEI or MEID, just whether or not that is what the the first part of the BUD is.
The reason I am asking this is because the first part of the BUD for my retail Moto X is the MEID + 00 but for my dev ed it is IMEI + 0. And for both devices MEID + 00 is not the same as IMEI + 0 since the IMEI is one digit longer and the last digit is not zero.
I am not sure if this is significant or not but if it is consistent it may be. Now that there is a way to query the Motorola bootloader unlock code (BUC) database directly, I am trying to figure out if there is some way to get it to return the BUCs for the non-dev ed Verizon and ATT devices.
This maybe a wild goose chase but if you have the time and could run fastboot oem get_unlock_ data I would appreciate it.

I am but I am a woman, lol!!!!
Just trying to see if there is anything to the bootloader unlock data differences I see b/t my retail Moto X and Dev Ed Moto X. It is probably a wild goose chase, but a poster on the Droid Ultra forum said he was able to get the motorola site to return bootloader unlock codes for some Droid Ultras. None of the droid ultras should be able to be unlocked.
It is looking like the droid ultra guy got lucky and the devices' BUCs were mistakenly in the database. A dev on the DU forum put together a web app that will query the Motorola database directly and I tested it with my Dev Ed so I know the web app works to return a BUC if your device BUC is in the database.
This is the thread if you want to read it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/step-step-guide-how-to-unlock-4-4-4-t3005865
I purchased a BUC for my retail Moto X from one of the Chinese code sellers last spring but now I have a Moto X 2014 and I am desperate to get it unlocked. Doesn't look like it is going to happen though.
I was hoping that more codes would be available to purchase but it look likes that well has run dry. And jcase doesn't want to work on Motorola devices anymore so I was hoping there was some way to manipulate the BUD to get the online database to return the codes. The OP in that thread above really got my hopes up, but it doesn't look like there is a way to do it though

This Moto forum post has plenty of people posting this information with both IMEI and "getvar_all" outputs.
Should be plenty for your research, right?

It doesn't look like it will work. The first steps of the batch file are fastboot oem unlock (unlock bootloader) which I thought the Att model was prevented from doing.
Plus, the author of that post keeps mixing up his Moto X revisions. That is of course unless you really have a 4.7" screen. [emoji1]

my girlfriend is using a 2013 moto-x and it has never recieved Lollipop. so unless its some mismatched mangled version, it's just more wrong info.
since a single mistyped character would render a phone useless, i think i'd skip something from someone with such an error filled description.
first thing i noticed is the date on the article. the 2014 AT&T moto x didn't even have L at that time

I have a Pixel 5 bought on eBay as an "open box". The thing's awake and generally no obvious signs of problems. But... I want to root it and OEM unlock is grey. Grrr...
I did a "reboot bootloader" and... bootloader "locked".
I assumed (silly me) this thing would be carrier agnostic. It's not.
So... What carrier uses GD1YQ? Let me guess... VZW
If it's not VZW or someone equally evil, how do unlock the bootloader?
BTW, V11 is loaded.

If oem unlock is greyed out, you can't unlock the bootloader.
I got that far,. Some of what I've found with Google suggests this isn't cast in concrete.
I rooted a Samsung S7 from Verizon, which means "don't so much as think about it". NTL the Sammy is rooted and has been for I forget how long.
Am I even more locked out with this unit? Again, does anyone have an idea about which carrier, if any, is associated with QD1YQ? If I read it correctly, some carriers will unlock the bootloader if the owner shows up, phone in hand.
The GD1YQ model is the Google Store model. It's carrier agnostic. Yea.
AFAIK the bootloader can't be unlocked. WTF
is there an image flashing tool for pixel similar to ODIN? otherwise probably no way around VZW crap.

Try this:
Don't insert SIM, but connect to WiFi. Skip through the rest of setup. Once at the home screen, open up Phone and dial *#*#CHECKIN#*#* (*#*#2432546#*#*), you should get a notifcation that says "checkin successfull". Let the phone sit for a few minutes, then reboot and see if OEM Unlocking is enabled. If not, leave it connected to WiFi for a while and come back to it later.

Pixel devices are set up quite differently from Samsung; individual partitions are flashed with images, rather than package files. AFAIK bootloader unlock is still required to use Odin, much as it's required to be able to issue flash commands via ADB.
