Note 4 CM12 Storage - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I flashed a CM12 nightly and it seems my storage is somewhat messed up. I've wiped everything and yet my total space still reads 24.22gb. I know I won't have all of the space, but I would think CM would leave me more total storage space. Help please?

Nah about 6-7gb is reserved for the system. You're fine.

Hmm, I knew that goes for TW but I didn't think CM. Does it just not display the 'system' in storage settings? What are the 6-7gb for?

Yes that's correct it's not shown in cm.
The system partition size can't be changed unless you format and repartition your phone. The 6-7gb is the default amount of space set aside for the system partition in all note 4s.
It's somewhat self explanatory, but it's where your system files & rom are held

Alright thanks, that makes cents. So then basically there will always be the 6-7gb of system storage no matter what? I don't think my Note 3 had this big of a system partition on CM12, though I may be wrong. Just wondering, do all ROMs use the 6-7gb of system? What if I tried an unofficial CM build?

Yeah you can't change the size unfortunately, but no most roms do not take up the entire 6+gb. My note 2 only has something like 4gb system partition. I think because these are bigger devices and the stock roms have more features, the note 4 required a bigger system partition. Now, while zipped, most roms are between 700mb-1.5gb, but once extracted into the system partition they take up quite a bit more space.
Cm roms do take up less space, but you can't really use the remaining system partition space for anything else.
However, it's nice to have extra space on the system partition so you can flash mods and whatnot

Okay, thank you. Really appreciate the detail Just checked my Note 3 and it has 25.64gb of 'Total Space' on CM12. I guess I just never realized it on then. So pretty much all Note 4s, no matter what, have about 6-7gb of reserved space...

[Q] Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions

Is it possible to flash Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions and then flash a Nand backup instead of flashing the rom and starting from scratch???
I'm thinking of using Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions but i dont want to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps and restoring all my setting to what they currently are.
I'm running aospCMod 2.3.3 GB (3/26/'11) on CDMA Hero
thanks for any help and responses!
Restoring your nand backup with standard partitions won't work after creating firerat's custom partitions. I don't think they will, anyway. You can try it. More than likely the nandroid restore won't work (might tell you there's not enough space in one of the partitions) or it won't fully boot, and you'll have to start from scratch.
Titanium Backup makes this process pretty painless, minus the clicking install, install, install... it even saves app settings and preserves Market links.

You can restore a nand backup if the new partitions have enough space. I will do this if I'm shrinking my system partition to accommodate a smaller ROM that I had already flashed. I haven't noticed any issue when doing it. Just follow the steps, and make sure your partitions are in line with what you need.
thanks for your reply!
I'll wait till a new realease of aospCMod is out then i'll try it out.

No problem. I'm running aospCMod. I had my partitions set at 130 10. I set them a bit conservative to allow for all the updates that were coming out. Since we haven't gotten an update since 3/26, and I was suffering serious flash withdrawals, I nanded my 3/26 install, then reflashed new partitions of 90 4, then restored my back up. 90 4 is still a bit conservative, and you can probably go to 72 2 depending on the size of the GAAPs and tweaks you flash with the rom.
Enjoy the mod, the increased data size is incredible.

And just a word of warning make sure you have atleast a class 6 sd card. Someone told me itll work with any class (i had a class 2) and eventually re flashing the MTD boot killed my sd card. Soooo just throwing my 2 cents out there. Its a great method though =]
Sounds like a bad SD card or something, mod has (or shouldn't..) absolutely no effect on your card at all.

Really now? Cause i heard it could effect that.
Which doesnt make sense cause it uses internel space. I guess Partioting would effect it but thats different. Perhaps youre right. Ill look into it =]
The OP of the Firerat thread explains what it does even. Doesn't do anything to the sd card. Or shouldn't. Have used it many times since the summer with absolutely no ill effect.

The first number specifies the size (in MB) to make the system partition. The second number specifies the size (in MB) to make the cache partition. Taking into account the size of all other partitions (bootloader, boot, recovery, misc), any leftover space after that is pushed into the data partition.
So your resulting data partition will be (The default size of the data partition + the size shrunk from the system partition + the size shrunk from the cache partition).
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

So I made a Nand Backup, Flashed FR's Mod 1.5.3 set to 105 5, then restored the Nand and flashed the FR_boot.zip and it WORKED!!!
this is AMAZING... now i have a total of 368MB of internal memory (233MB free)
Thanks for the help guys!!!!
I just joined the firerat bandwagon, it's kinda cool

In your opinion should i leave those number as they are, or isthere a benefit by changing them. Especially if i dont know exactly what changing those numbers would do haha

what i did to determine the numbers was check the size of /system in my latest Nand backup and gave it some extra head room.
i may change it again to a larger number as i feel that i didnt provide enough of this "head room" for /system

cm9 help

i need to resize the partition for cm9. i only have 2.96 GB of space to use of my 32 GB touchpad? I need more than that, i am currently out of space on it. What do i do? important info may be i have tried to install Archlinux ARM twice, and each time it didnt work, but i believe a partition was made. I really do not want to lose progress on games that i have started on the device, or lose any files. How can i resize the partition on the touchpad, or make sure all of the partitions are gone?

Have you tried the directions for adding partition size for the CM7 mod?
You will loose everything but if you use a back up program like titanium backup you can back up all you data from games and restore it when you are done!
I used the cm7 size partition on my touch pad and i have 8gigs for android now. The size is just a file you flash. The one i used was for a 2 gig increase and i flashed it 4 times.

Never heard of this. Could you elaborate?

where that 7 gigs of space going

Hello Everyone
I rooted and already have my phone the way I want it but I've noticed that when you do the full wipe
theres like 7 gigs of space missing. I was wondering if anyone was able to at least get most of their space back when they wipe the phone
if so how can i do it?
I currently running the Rage Rom thinking of going back to Ecliptic ONE
and i have TWRP recovery
any ideas will be appretiated thanks

how much space you supposed to have after the full wipe?
I recently did a full wipe and it was like 6.x gigs right off the bat. It boggles the mind, considering there are phones out there that have only that much total capacity.
Wtf htc.
Does anyone know how much space AOSP roms take? I'm switching once the installer comes out.

AOSP ROMs are typically around 120-150 Megs zipped, sense ROM go.from 700 to a little over 900 MB's zipped.

Right, but I'm asking for how much CM takes after installation and clean wipe. I'm not sure how compression works, so this may be wrong, but if I set up a proportion (I'm almost sure you can't do that), CM comes to 1.5 gigs installed (205meg for 10.2 zipped), which seems more reasonable.
It really sucks that I have to keep clearing out stuff because I start with only like 25 gigs of space rather than 31.5.
Can somebody who has 10.2 installed comment?
if its off a fresh boot, it's because of all the apps that prolly installed to the internal sd got erased, thats why you had more space, and still have your files and stuff

I (tried to) delete ALL data from my phone and it was still 7 gigs.
Got this explanation from another site.
The 32GB are in 1000Byte = 1KB Logic, and the 25GB should be in Binary Logic, so 1024Byte = 1KB. which gives at first a "loss" of about 2GB: 32GB = 29,8023GiB
the rest of the space is mostly the android system, reserved space for cache etc... one small part will be the journal of the ext file sytstem which is used instead of yaffs. So arround 200-400MB i think will be covered by the ext journal.
you have the same problem with harddisks too. The firms write it in decimal logic but the operating system does it in binary. Some Operating Systems nowadays also write the correct GiB or MiB or KiB but not all...[\quote]

use a file explorer and go back as far as you can. Check /data/media. if you've ever flashed a 4.2 rom it moves all your files around and it gets confusing.
If that doesn't find it, download Diskusage. it could help you out.

23gb of 32 gb?

Yes, the OS and any other files you add take up space. Most seem to have a bit over 24gb out of the box.

lol of course i did! but not by 9gb! 3 or 4 was what it was on my nexus 5 with kitkat but a 9gb difference is huge! plus i guess i never used twrp before eaither and those backups take up to 3 gb after like 4 or 5 different backups and a few videos i ran out of space. never had that happen to me before on my nexus 5
Actually you should have 25.98GBs. You need to format cache and user data to regain it. Might as well just flash all to a clean slate.

Formatting any device usually consumes 10% of the rated unformatted space. Been like that forever. This is a proportion not a set value
Beyond that ART cache takes up twice the space that Calvin does in exchange for higher speed. Been known since ART was available to play with on KK

I just formatted cache and userdata when I had 23GBs, but I've also flashed all other partitions since. For whatever reason it's some weird glitch. I would just wipe cache and userdata and check it out. I know it a big pain to keep having to download everything over and over.

[Q] Internal Storage Missing 4GB

I am missing roughly 3 to 4GB of space on my internal storage. Long story short -- flashed cm11.0_golden.nova.20141127.ODIN_TWRP the first couple of tries it failed mainly due to me not knowing how to enter into recovery mode. After about 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and all was well. Then I notice a large chunk of my internal storage is missing. I enter recovery mode and format all internal storage. I gain a few hundred MB. I cannot see those missing GB of space at all. My best guess is that those first few unsuccessful attempts at flashing the rom are still there in the internal storage taking the space I am missing. Is there any way to repartition the internal storage? I have used all of the methods available to me with TWRP and have had no success in gaining that storage back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guessing you have S3 mini soo i have same "issue" it's actually the phone itself takes around 3-4 GB i have usable 4.64 gb and i have 8GB model.
So is this just the normal amount of space taken up by the system? And yes mine is an 8GB model also.
Yes guys it's normal if you have 4GB.
4GB for system and 4GB for user
When i look at how much storage total it lists 4.72GB. For available space it shows 4.27GB. Will the 4GB taken up by the system not be shown? I just figured that it would list close to 8GB total with X amount taken by system. Im pretty sure this is how it was before I flashed the phone.

Could it be the missing 4GB is the partition of the system? I am using stock ROM also can only access about 4GB for saving files and apps. Maybe the CM11 itself using 4GB for OS process and pre-installed/bloatware apps? Just my guest.
You can try to reach the missing space using 3rd party apps such as XDA File Manager. BUT, I wont dare to do anything to the 'hidden files', as I know it could damage your system. That's why they made it invisible to normal/average user (like me). Unless you know what and which files to be played with.
