I'm not gonna always use the Hard Drive.
I usually have things on a hard drive that I need and don't transfer to my phone so I could use this..
It's not a 24/7... People should purchase this though as many people are complaining about storage.

Will it handle regular files like text and doc filres or is it just for streaming media?

It'll handle any file not only media.

I best storage solution would be for Google to offer 32 and 64Gb variants.
I can understand their reasoning for not wanting to use sd-cards - and I'm fine with that. I would actually prefer not to use an sd-card myself. That said, if they are going to go down that path, they need to make damn sure that there is adequate on-board storage. Considering storage costs bugger all, it's really quite surprising they are only offering 8Gb and 16Gb variants. 8Gb is just a joke actually!

I know.. this is just a really nice solution.

Seems like overkill....you can install es file explorer which is free and use it to access smb, ftp etc shares to copy, move, stream files from any pc on your local network.

Lol cloud storage would be alot more simple

Does it have a pass through so you can be connected to the internet via wifi while also connected to the Patriot-Gauntlet-Hard-drive setup?

even tough i have not watched the video...i dont think thats any thing new....you could always create symlinks.did you use a diffrent method?

to mount it as /mnt/sdcard so the tab thinks it's his internal sd space

That Might cause Problems later on.You should try symlinking folders..Take the following example.
the USB drive is mounted as /usb(or anything else)
the sdcard is mounted as /sdcard(or anything else)
the game or app path is /usb/xyz(or anything)
using a terminal type ln-s /usb/xyz /sdcard/xyz
this creates a symlink.and is more preferable.

So, I just got myself a 64GB MicroSDXC from SanDisk to use in my Xperia T as storage for some movies. I planned on formatting it in EXT2/EXT3/EXT4 or EXFAT so I can store files bigger than 4GB on this.
But... turns out the Xperia T won't read anything but FAT32. I can use the full capacity just fine and it works perfectly, but you're stuck if you want to load anything bigger than 4GB since FAT32 can't handle it.
Sort of sucks.

It should be able to read them.
Just borrow someones galaxy to format your sd card to ext 4 and try that. It should work.

I used GParted in Linux to format the card from my PC, no dice. I tried EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, NTFS and exFAT. Nothing works. Tried hotplugging and rebooting with the card inserted.
I'm pretty sure the kernel only supports mounting FAT32 SD cards. With FAT32 everything is fine, you can use the full capacity and everything and the phone nicely formats it for you, but I can't live with the 4GB file size limit. Or well, not for the price I paid for the card.
I'm returning the card, doesn't really matter to me, but I absolutely don't get why Sony doesn't implement at least the EXT2/3/4 they use for the internal file system. It's baked into the kernel for sure but it just refuses to mount the SD card with it.

There are init.d scripts that will enable it, and I am sure there is a custom kernel that does enable it.
However, with 4.1 coming in q1 2013 you may want to hang onto that card....

I really don't want to unlock my bootloader or root my phone...
I'm selling the card now, I got it online for way below what they go for in Belgium so I'm actually making a profit anyway. Not that I'm doing it for that, but when I want to I can just get another one around that time (but then I'll test with another card beforehand).

Why are you not for rooting your phone. I'm trying to way up if it's worth doing. And there's also the risk of my tech ability. I would say I'm a rank amateur in the tech department. Any opinions on where I can go to start learning. I have Xperia lt30p. Gratitude to anyone who points me in the right direction.

I've rooted tons of phones before, I'm a software development student and an extreme Android geek, but I like the safe, walled garden I'm in right now. I like what Sony has done with Android and want to keep as much of it intact to be honest.
I've rooted my own phones before too, but I felt I really spent too much time messing with it after doing those things, always tweaking things that really didn't do anything but offer placebo effects. I like not having to worry about that stuff.
And I don't want to risk any sort of warranty loss.

That's exactly what has been holding me back. If I was to root it I don't have any dev skills so would probably end up doing exactly what you explained. Just tweaking for tweaking's sake. But I do want to start understanding what's being said in forums. Some of it goes way over my head. I would like to test the limits of my Xperia t but am a little unsure where to start. How do you feel the Xperia t holds up in the top ranks of smartphones. This is my first Sony smart and I'm fairly happy so far.

Start by reading the all in one thread in the Q&A section.
You will not void any warranty by rooting as you can always revert back to factory settings by flashing a stock ftf and no one will know.
Furthermore you can do more than just placebo tweaks, like remove bloatware and change the look of your phone by adding new systemui.apk mods. Take a look in the theme and app section

You had the same idea as me. I purchased a MicroSD card today, although it was only 8GB. I can confirm that anything other than Fat32 is not readable by the Xperia T running stock ICS.
I'm splitting the HD movies into two parts as a short-term workaround.
Further to the above, I can confirm that splitting the movie files using Split and Concat on a Mac (or Hjsplit on Windows), produces files which play fine in VLC player and MX player. The downside is that you have to navigate to the file using a file browser, for example, Astro and select play as video file and select your choice of player.
Not a very elegant solution, but allows Fat32 to be used and movie files larger than 4GB to be transferred and played.

Wrong! I've got an EXT3/4 formatted 64gb card in my Xperia T and have about 45gb of data on it at the mo, and all of which is accessible. As Greg has already suggested, and I formatted mine using a Samsung Galaxy Note, but you could probably use any latest generation Galaxy!
There are at least 2 other threads discussing this (SD capacity and format). People really should use the search function - and they are probably in the Q & A thread.
Oh and I'm stock ROM, with nothing unlocked.

Are you sure it's ext3/ext4? Can you put files over 4GB on your SD? I formatted the card directly from GParted on my PC and tried about every file system there is and really only FAT32 was recognized.

Not absolutely sure but I had to use an ext3/4 mounting tool to get readonly access when I inserted the card directly into my Windows PC. (not being able to get read/write access I tend to just connect the phone to the PC these days though.)
I've got a couple of > 4gb movies on the card and they seem to be playing fine.

N7 with 147 Gb internal memory, thanks to multiboot

Tassadar released his amazing app, multiboot v3 yesterday, which among other things provides usb booting support. Today, I installed rasbeanjelly on my external hdd. I now have 147 gigs of internal memory in android.
I just thought I would share this, as i believe it is the largest internal memory on an N7 to date. Thanks again to Tassadar for multiboot. No more worrying about space.

That's pretty cool but carrying around a HDD just to use the tab is pretty counter-intuitive.

Than this is not for you. It is not physically internal, but from a software standpoint, it is indeed internal. You dont have to carry it around, because i also bave two more + ubuntu installed on the device itself. This is for when i am "docked". It works well also because I made a modified otg cable that is about 6 feet long, and the hdd cord is 3 feet. That, and my hdd attatches to the back of my case.

It really is. I keep 2 android and one ubuntun installation on the device itself, and one android and one ubuntu on the external hdd. I test alot of apps and beta test others, and never have to worry about crashing my os. I jist test everything on one of my extras. If it crashes, i just boot back to internal. Also handy for big games and having 10-20 movies and thousands of songs accessible whenever I want them. My external is very small physically, so no big deal there.

On memory size, it is overkill. That was the point, as this started as a test to see if it could be done. The hdd will be split into 3 partitions. One android, one ubuntu and one collective storage to be shared across them all. The handy thing is, there are three nexus 7 in my house. I can boot the same os from any of them, by just plugging the hdd in. No transferring backups, no flashing. Just plug, boot and done. All my stuff and settings, just as they were on the other.

What is the 500 Gb formatted with? Mine was picky with fat32 and ntfs. Once I formatted to ext4, it took right away. I would bet it will work for you too. Hope you get it going!
Edit: You also need an hdd with external power supply. Mine did not, so I had to splice a 5 volt supply into the usb cord. Works perfectly.

On the external hdd, an android rom installed even faster than flashing straight to the n7. Rasbeanjelly installed in about 6 seconds, and gapps about the same. Ubuntu took 10 minutes from flash to desktop ready. Format your hdd to ext4 and give it a shot. The speed is actually pretty shocking. A regular usb 2.0 pendrive would take forever to install to. The hdd is lightning fast. I will make a video and upload to youtube of an android installing to the hdd later tonight.

So also if I try to format my pen drive in ext4 nothing changes and I've to switch to HDD to obtain your installation time, right?

Correct. The hdd has a much higher i/o speed capability. The 2.0 pen drive is very slow.

I think you are confusing "internal" and "on board". Internal is not just memory "inside" the device. Internal also refers to the space in which the operating system is itself installed to and grows within. When booting this particular system, it is entirely on the hdd. It is using no on board space at all.
To be strictly accurate, "internal memory" is any memory which loses its contents upon loss of power (dynamic, ram). So we are both technically wrong. However, the android clearly sees it as internal.

largest SD card HD+ can take

What is the largest size SD card the HD+ can take as of today? I have seen posts talking about 64GB. Just to make sure that is it as far as capacity.
Trying to decide if i should buy the 16GB or 32GB model.
The 32GB model seems to have quite a premium on it on the used market, so it seems the 16GB mpdel and a SD card would be better value.
Next thing is the battery issue. What are the chances that a used HD+ battery will have much, if any, life left in it?
Read an interesting thread here today (been reading about HD+ all day) about a guy who used 2 x Sony batteries. So the batteries can be replaced and those sony batteries will be around for a fair while (new phone model they come out of) so seems the nook can go on and on as far battery replacement goes.
Why a Nook HD+ ? Its the only tablet i can find with no camera other than an IPAD 1. I've given up on the IPAD 1 - much much too much messing around trying to get decent modern apps on it.
My useage is mainly movies, music and ebooks. I think the HD+ is the right choice.

You are better off paying the premium for the 32GB model. Since the device uses an emulated internal SD, the extra space internally is critical. After the system is set up you are left with only an 8GB internal SD on the 16GB model. And most apps will only use the internal SD. Many apps will not even recognize the external SD. And I only have heard of the 64GB card working, don't know about larger.
And the factory battery comes charged at 50% and I would expect a new device to have a good working battery. Used devices could have a bad battery.

Ok thanks for that info - that's really critical to know. Well i already bought the 16GB model and its being sent to the freight consolidator, so too late on that one.
But the next few I buy will be the 32GB model. I intend to buy 3 or 4 and have them all sent in one go. That way i should be able to end up with 1 or 2 that work OK.
I will stick with the 64GB cards - class 4 is what i think i saw mentioned here, so will look for those.

My intended usage is movie viewing, listening to music and reading books. That's pretty much it. I dont expect to use it for browsing or anything else really.
Will Mx player, a music player app and an e-reader work OK in the 8GB left over internally? Media can go on the 64GB Micro SD card, and if i can get OTG working, i can use an SSD drive and/or a USB memory stick.
The only reason i want the Nook HD+ is for media consumption.

If you are not going to be using the SD to run a rom, you do not need to restrict yourself to class 4. I doubt you could find a 64 in class 4 anyway.

You are very correct - cant find a 64GB card in Class 4. Struggling to find a 32GB card in Class 4.
BUT - if i dont plan to run from SD then you say i dont need to restrict to class 4 - so would this one be OK ?

Ultimate goal would be to run Lollipop if i can. I only want to watch movies, listen to music and read books - no need of browsing etc, email and the like as i wont have any wi-fi anyway.

Yes that SD works fine.
CM11 has been know to brick some HD+ devices. I recommend CM10.1.3. It is fast, safe and stable on the HD series. You don't need anything any more advanced than that for what you want to use it for.
I don't know anything about OTG.

Doing extensive deep dive into this...... reading so much its all becoming a blur and will have to re-read it all
From the extensive research i have done it seems every CM ROM has issues. Ver 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 have had users report issues of various types. CM 11 seems to have issues from time to time as does CM12.
Given this, is there any real difference between using 10.3 and 11.x.x ? Fro what i read KitKat 4.4.4 makes better use of resources as an OS and that this helps the HD+ ???
I am just trying to figure out if i should run with 10.3 or an 11 or 12 ROM?
Another question, not that this matters right now but interested to know....... the screen res. Its 1080P. Does it make a difference if i encode video files at 720P for the screen of the HD+ that has native 1080P? I would hate to spend a huge amount of time encoding down to 720P only to find it looks terrible because the native res is 1080P.
I can make my video files so much smaller encoding to 720P rather then 1080P. I would think on a 9" screen it would be little if any visible difference between 1080P and 720P encoded from a Blue Ray ?

video on HD+ looks good at all res.
And I told you CM11 is dangerous because it can brick certain models with the vulnerable chips. Stick with CM10.1.3.

Which are the certain models with vulnerable chips? Always nice to know if the tab you have is vulnerable.

Search the HD+ forum for "trim bug", it will tell you.

FWIW CM11 later releases incorporated fixes that avoid triggering this fatal bug on affected devices.
