I was trying to do a video call with google hangouts over my wifi and it is extremely bad quality. When I take video with the camera it looks very good so I don't think its a hardware issue. I am assuming it has something to do with the video being too high quality and it being compressed? Is there a fix for this?
Thanks
Yes use your 4G network or upgrade your WiFi speed....... and make sure your entire household isn't on the router, also perhaps the other person has a lower quality device so google matches bit rates so quality is equitable

Did anyone ever try to use video calls with skype/google talk?
I noticed that the video stream the comes from the 2x is always WORSE in resolution that other phones (i tried 1 galaxy S, 2 galaxy wifi players = low end devices) and the resolution is much better. It seems like it's basically half. It's not the connection I'm using since I tried several combos, even with only the lg 2x with active video camera in a call on a 3MBit upload connection it's still the same crap!
Is this because of the lack NEON?
I think its because the front camera is very bad

Check if your screenprotector covers the camera.
Its both the back and front cameras, resolution is way too low and they show EXTREME aliasing
Lg optimus 2 x Front camera 1.3 megapixel for that its Should be good video quality. I tried to skype and it's Showed me gorgeous result.

There have been a few posts that say the call quality is bad.
GSM Arena's review states that calls are loud and clear, but the speakerphone performance is awful.

While everyone is wondering about the display and battery life (two very important qualities in a phone),
can anyone provide details about the CALL quality?
yeah yeah,.... a few weeks ago it was cool hyping the xperia z in reviews....now it seems that bashing it is the new way to go...i've even seen reviews that complain about the too edgy design of the device, and it doesn't feel as good in the hand as the s3 htc one does...
(don't get me wrong, nothing against you, but people should stay cool about all the upcoming news on how bad this and that aspect of the z is...)
Disappointed by the loudspeaker, but "loud and clear" calling is good for me. Don't use speaker really so don't care too much about that.

All they actually say is:
The built-in secondary microphone is used for active noise-cancellation, so calls are loud and clear even in noisy environments.

The way that's phrased makes me wonder if they actually tried making calls with it, or if they are simply noting the fact that it has active noise cancellation.
I've only seen one review that specifically mentions call quality, and it's fairly negative: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z-Review_id3247/page/4
call quality is fine but nothing exceptional. The earpiece is a bit weak for our taste, meaning that you may have some trouble hearing your callers when in noisy locations. Do not expect wonders from the quality – everything will sound quite high and digital. Strangely, the sound that gets transmitted through the microphone of the Xperia Z gets somewhat modulated and appears distorted on the other end of the line. Lowering the volume can help you to remedy this issue, but still, it's something we though was worth mentioning because we haven't encountered it in many other phones.

Here, I've got a 8/10.
But there is no details...
any more opinions?
Call quality (both ends of the call) is excellent, quality and volume are top-notch.
The Z has a "waterproof" main speaker and the output is quite low, so not great when used as a speakerphone. The ZL on the other hand has a freakin amazing speaker - really loud.
I had an HTC One until last Thursday. It had to go back because the camera was defected.
I also noticed the call quality was probably the lowest I've experienced any phone! There was a constant hissing noise which was often louder than the caller, there were popping sounds and other distracting noises. In general. It was terrible.
I have a new HTC One On order and it should be with me this week. I'm hoping that this unit won't suffer the same low call quality as the last.
For those who already own the one how would you describe the call quality?
Absolutely fine for me. Maybe you had a generally defective device?
Best call quality of any phone I've owned, regardless of all the other issues I've had with it

So I've had the HTC One for about 10 days now, and I have to say that it has by far the best call quality of any phone I have ever owned (and that's a lot of phones).
As an example, I was in a busy shopping center the other day, near a children's play area, and took a call, so was expecting the usual complaints from the other side about the screaming in the background, but when I questioned the other party, they said that the could hear the background noise but it was not distracting.
By comparison, I took a call from a colleague with an iPhone 5 last week, and had to ask them why they were talking to me while playing with their children (the screams were deafening!), but it turned out that their daughter was in another room already. The background suppression on the One seems to work very well.
My mother is hard of hearing and calling her on a mobile was previously fraught with difficulties, but she has mentioned how much clearer I sound when calling her now.
I have not experienced any hissing, clicks or other interference.
I'm also impressed with the call quality in poor areas. I was a little concerned that the One was showing poorer reception at home that my previous HTC Sensation. Experiences on that phone had shown that it was difficult to make or receive calls in specific places in the house, but using the One in the same locations suffers no degradation.
The same effect can be seen when using the One with a variable signal for example on a train; places where calls would drop with other phones are now accessible.
My classmate had got the phone and I have used it, the call quality is great.
Just reinforcing what everybody else is saying, call quality is brilliant for me to.

ive had numerous HTC handsets and this is by far the best call quality so far:good:
Thanks for your replies. The unit I sent back must have been dodgy in the camera and phone department!
Looking forward to the new one this week.
I was wondering how everyone else's experience with moto x call quality on Sprint (i'm in Northern Illinois). For me, it has been somewhat poor as I callers can sound somewhat distorted and I can hear what sounds like hissing in the background. Overall, I would say the call quality is worse than it was with my Galaxy S2. Furthermore, I know it's not a bad earpiece because if I use Groove IP then the calls sound perfect. Again, just wondering what other Sprint customers experiences have been like.
Mines my Moto X sometimes sounds bad during calls and sometimes people can't hear me when I'm talking

I have experienced that also. I live around north shore. Call quality has great when i got the phone but it seems that it got worse.

I'm using a Fido (Rogers) Moto X, call quality sounds muffled compared to my HTC One X and tweaking it a bit using Volume+ (requires root) helps a bit, I would assume Sprint's firmware might need some work.
call quality on sprint w/ Moto X
Call quality is horrible with my Moto X on Sprint in Boise, ID. I don't know if its the device or the network. And it seems like it got worst in the last month or so. When I first got my motorola X, phone call quality was not excellent but it was better than now. There is a hissing Noise in the Background When Using Handset when someone is talking on the other end. My wife has an iphone 5 and it does not do that so it makes me think its not the network. But I went into the local sprint store and tried one of their display moto x phones and its doing the same thing. Do all Moto X phones do this? I get the hissing noise when I use the handset to my ear and when I'm using and ear-bud as well therefor I don't think its a defective speaker in my phone, probably a software issue.
I have this phone from yesterday and I have notice that voice quality during phone calls is very poor :/
People in their phones also told me that them hear me not good.
Cheaper phones have better phonecall quality like this one. Im very dissapointed
Didn't notice that. I'm coming from Galaxy S10e and my voice quality is the same. Only hands free mode is not as good as on the S10e.

Yes, VoLTE is supported here. (Vodafone, Germany)
In my case, i must hold phone straight to the mouth then people who talking with say the call quality is ok. When I tilt the phone away from my mouth just a little bit, then everybody tell me they feel like I'm speaking through the material or or was in a swimming pool and they hardly hear me. In my opinion this is software problem, cause people from asus forum says when use whatsapp or messenger call quality is ok. I didn't test this yet but probably do this. I think the solution will be to find good alternative app for gsm calling.
The latest update for the phone addressed this issue for me. I now have much better quality on my end.
Do you guys still facing issue with call quality after the latest update..looking forward to buy once its launched here..curious to know
Also hows the call quality with VoLTE ?
The voice quality issue seem to be fixed, at leaast on my side after that update rolled out
And in terms of VoLTE and VoWiFi I am super satisfied. I use my phone much at work and people are happy with the quality, as I've been asking them how it is

Thank you for the reply..Much appreciated..waiting eagerly for the launch here
I've hesitated to buy this phone since launch, but now I have it and call quality isn't an issue even without VoLTE on the 30.11.51.67 update.
I still have an issue with call quality. I am in the UAE so no volte or HD voice available. It sounds way worse than my OnePlus 6
