[Q] Questions coming from the original G LTE model - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have the original G - the LTE version (XT1045) in the US. Has anybody else come from the original G and regretted it? So far it looks like the 2014 G will have a better camera and better speakers, but worse battery life, and no LTE (compared to the G I have) - LTE isn't a HUGE deal as HSPA+ is solid. 5.1 is about to hit my G, but it will likely never get M. The 2014 G is already on 5.1, right? And I'm sure it will get M. And it looks like the 2014 G is actually larger than the 2014 X?
I guess my main question is surrounding the tradeoffs - are the bigger screen, better camera (how much better really?) worth the trade off of lesser battery life (if true?) and a less one-hand-friendly size? A good camera IS important to me, but so is battery life and ease of use.
My other question is there are two models of the 2014 G on Amazon - a global GSM and US GSM. I don't care about T-Mobile as I'll always be on either Cricket or AT&T b/c I need the coverage, so I'm wondering if the global GSM gets more love from Moto than the US GSM, as it will work fine on AT&T/Cricket.
Thanks for any info!

I don't have huge hands and I can easily hold it. It seemed a little slick so I picked up a Tudia silicon sleeve for a few bucks on Amazon and it looks like part of the phone. Plus it gives a little lip around the front protecting the screen a little more. I actually purchased a Moto G, kept it one day and exchanged it. I don't regret it a minute. I use my phone a good deal, but normally charge it overnight only. I wouldn't day the global version gets any more love. If you're only going to use it in the states, then I'd prefer the US version. I do have mine rooted and running a custom ROM, so I can tweak the battery life a good deal. I don't really know about stock battery life since I unlocked it almost as soon as I got it. It does have a pretty good camera though.

Moto X XT1053

In a lil bit of a dilemma here...
Have a S4 on the 4.4.2 update (Safe Strapped to Hyperdrive) and have a older Tmobile Moto X XT1053 (I am on new LTE ATT plan) that I unlocked the bootloader a while back on. (was my GF's) She got a new work phone and the Moto X has been sitting.... I like my S4 but I think the Moto X has a lil better battery and possibly Signal strength on the radios.
S4 Pros:
Removable battery
SD slot
Screen Res
Cons:
Safestrap (limited roms)
Moto X Pros:
Unlocked Bootloader
Great Battery
Better signal
Moto X Cons:
Limited roms
Sealed battery
Thoughts? I need to sell one of these to make some $$$ back.

I give my vote to Moto X. I really like that phone. I even don't need custom roms, I am sitting now on Krypton and very happy.
That phone is small, powerfull and very nice looking.
P.S. Now I have Moto X. Didn't use S4. Don't like samsung :silly:

Fair enough! I expect these types of responses.
I assume most will be MOTO X based because this was posted in the MOTO X forum.
You'll get more money selling the S4.
I had an S3 and Note 2 before my Moto X, the difference in performance is night and day. Limited ROMs on the Moto X is a non-issue because it's so good stock, and even better with Xposed. I haven't even bothered trying any of the custom AOSP-based ROMs because there are always bugs that have to be fixed, I'd rather try the stock-based custom ROMs. Tried them all on my Note 2 but always ended up on Beans' TW-based ROM, which is why I haven't bothered trying any of the AOSP/CM-based ROMs.
How is the batt life on the moto X with the custom roms? sometime i Tether/GPS (plugged in usually thne) alot so I need something that will last a while.
Thank guys!
My sister switched from her s4 to a moto x (after I showed her mine) and she couldn't be happier. The s4 has better specs and therefore may be more future proof, however I personally prefer the smaller size and shape of the moto x. Not to mention with their optimized hardware and stock android the performance was way better on the moto. Its faster than the touchwiz bloated s4. Everyone in this forum would probably say moto x haha. However if you care about the higher res or bigger screen ( I don't) OR if you care about the significantly better camera, stick with the s4. And you honestly shouldn't need custom roms... Xposed and Gravity box has pretty much all of the features you may need or want.
I recently read an article where is said the MOTO X had one of the better radios performance also. even though they are all almost equal Qualcomm Chipsets.. hmm..
Motorola has always been one of the best in terms of radio performance.
From my experience, actually with the devices in my home where signal is lousy all around....
The X is quite good. Slightly better than the N5. On par with my M8 and a friends iPhone 6. And better than every Samsung that's entered my house. Lol

Droid turbo or moto x 2014?

Hey guys, I'm interested in upgrading my phone. I love my moto g and I'm undecided BTW these two phones. Which one would you go with?
I know the turbo has better specs in every department than the X, but I love the style and customizable options of the X.
I would probably go with 32gb storage.
Moto X unless you really want the extra battery life. My dad got the Turbo. It's a very nice phone, but not quite as smooth, attractive, or comfortable.
Yeah, that's my biggest issue with the turbo... Its not as sleek.
I'm only concerned with the whole specs thing... The turbo clearly has better specs than the Moto x. But then again that's not everything. I'm concerned when it comes to "futureproofing"
The "better" specs are meaningless when you're pushing almost twice as many pixels.
X all the way. I was in same boat. So glad I chose to build a custom X on Moto Maker. That Turbo is just so damn ugly. And those buttons, dont even get me started. Good Luck!
Hahaha the capacitive buttons or the volume/ power buttons?
Any of you guys experiencing problems with lollipop?
I returned my turbo and bought the moto x. Besides battery life, I think the moto x has fewer issues. But I get a full day out of a charge, so ho hum. I bought the turbo day 1 and went through 4 replacements before giving up. Having Lollipop already is an added bonus. However volte is not yet enabled.
The Turbo is slick, but I think the Moto X is a better designed phone. Aside from the fact that it looks better, it is also built better, with better materials. The Turbo has better specs, but they don't translate to better performance, with that unnecessarily high resolution screen being the culprit. The only thing that the Turbo does better is battery life, but considering the X can still make it through a full day no problem, I don't think it's worth getting the Turbo for that point alone. The X is the best phone ever made, IMO, so that is what I recommend.
I tested the Turbo and Moto X side by side for a week. I really wanted to like the Turbo because of the better specs but it didn't work out that way. WiFi connectivity was much better on the X. 4G speeds tested using speed test.net were noticeably better on the X. The X just feels way better in your hand. Battery life on the X was sufficient so not a real factor for me. For overall user experience the Moto X is a great phone

New Device - Anyone updated?

Has any heavy Droid Turbo user updated to the S6 or LG G4? I am getting a little tired of my Turbo screen - seems the new screens have some much more resolution.
Resolution is the same.. its just the Samsung screen is much much brighter
Color saturation and brightness are the difference. If you are bored of the screen on your Turbo, you might be difficult to please. Also, reports indicate that battery life with the S6 is dismal due to software issues. For me, the Turbo, as with the Droid MAXX series before, always comes down to battery life. It still tops the competition.

One thing I LOVE about my Moto Maxx (same hardware as the Droid Turbo) is the 3900 mAh battery. Oh my goodness. Coming from two Nexus phones (Google is always skimpy with the batteries), it's been fantastic. The 5.2" Quark phones (Droid Turbo/Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx) have LARGER batteries than the 5.96" Motorola Nexus 6.
I'm not always looking for a place to plug in.
All manufacturers should do that. Just put in a bigger battery!
I notice for the just-announced Galaxy S6 "Active", Samsung has decided to put in a 3500 mAh battery instead of the 2550 mAh they put in the Galaxy S6. THAT small size was very strange. The 2015 5.1" 1440p S6 (2550 mAh) has a SMALLER battery than the 2014 5.1" 1080p Galaxy S5 (2800 mAh). What was Samsung thinking?
______
I just won an AT&T LG G4. Pre-release marketing campaign and I got lucky. $699 retail value. Company says it will arrive first two weeks of August. I'm seriously thinking about selling it on eBay and keeping my Moto Maxx...
The only thing Motorola could have done to make the Moto Maxx better was rear camera OIS like they put in the Nexus 6. They knew how to do it, but didn't. They put everything else in... Qi wireless, turbo charging, 1440p, 3GB RAM, multiple carrier LTE capability, and huge BATTERY.
AT&T just announced a Galaxy S6 Active with a 3500 mAh battery...

I love my turbo - I am just going to stick with it until the next Moto comes out
I came to the Turbo from a Note 4. The Samsung has the best screen out there, but not by much. It is fast, and it takes a MicroSD card and you can remove the battery. Touchwhiz has been toned down on the lollipop OTA.
That said, a family member needed a new phone and didn't have the money to spend on an upgrade, so I paid it for her and took the new phone and gave her the Note 4.
I got the Turbo. Game up a little screen size and the SD slot, but the internals are the same, the phone is very well built, gets insane battery life(The Note 4 was no slouch either), and it is water repellent, which matters to me when riding in the summer and I get caught out in a rain storm...
If not for the damned lollipop update taking forever, this would be nearly the perfect phone...

1440x2560 on a 5.2" screen (565 PPI) isn't good enough for you??
I dunno guys, but I'm not able to see much difference between my Droid MAXX (5.0" 720p) and Moto MAXX (5.2" 1440p) when it comes to the pixel density. On stock, the Turbo's warm colors were a bit annoying, but that's something I adjusted in CM12.1 just fine (setting under LiveDisplay 95% to R, 95% to G, 100% to B) and the colors are nicely colder.
I am getting the g4 tomorrow because I had to switch to T-Mobile unfortunately in terms of having unlimited data and what not. I have been fed up with the turbo not receiving lollipop for the longest time. The advanced hd calling bs is wack because in reality if you think about it, the Verizon g2, htc m7, s4 and what not didn't have it at all as well and have been updated to lollipop with no problem way before this phone has even when being promised asap the update. It's been a well good use with the turbo for all this time, exceptional battery life, but didn't like the heating issues it has after using for about 20 mins doing normal browsing on social media and browser.

Let us know how the G4 compares.
I plan on sticking with the Turbo (actually Moto Maxx) until the flagship phones are out with the Snapdragon 820...assuming the 820 doesn't have issues like the 810.

I surely will let all of you know how it stacks up. I might miss the droid turbo because of the battery life, but lg g4 reigns supreme because of the extra battery and super high capacity micro sd expansion.
Having played with the Nexus for several days now, I am glad that I switched. The screen is larger and a tad nicer, and running unmodified Lollipop really is nice for a change. It;s fast, fluid, etc... Easily unlocked and rooted, you get to play with developer previews, etc... It just works really well.
What I miss? Battery life and the gestures, but battery life is still solid and gestures like waving your hand over it... It's nice, but it isn't a deal breaker for me... Overall I think I got the better phone.

That's good news! I'm glad you are much more satisfied with the nexus, I too was going to get it but its too big for me, plus for me the camera is a crucial feature on a smartphone. I ended up getting the g4 and waiting for it to be delivered today at my house.

The G4 is supposed to be really nice. I went Nexus because I am always getting pissed off that I can't unlock the phone, or updates take forever, etc... I always regret not getting the Nexus or DE phone...
I got the Turbo without even thinking. I just assumed that it had Lollipop... Got annoyed when I saw that it didn't, and started thinking, do I want to be locked into this phone for the next year or two?
I looked at the G4, the S6 and the Nexus and went with the Nexus, while my fiance went with the S6
Ended up getting the lg g4 since I moved to tmobile

Moto X 2014 or Moto Play

Hey guys,
After a year of exploring Windows Phone i am coming back to android.
I just love the looks of Moto X 2014 bamboo edition and I am skeptical wether it would be a wise move, or just buy Moto Play.
The size and the bamboo, just make me love this phone, buy would you say is a good buy or just buy the Play which should be better in many aspects, although no bamboo and bigger size, that I don't like.
I have both. Honestly it's a hard call for me. Bouncing back and forth between devices, they both have their strong points. If size is your concern, then go with the 2014. Battery? XPlay. Premium feel? 2014. Camera? XPlay. Speed? They are around the same, though the XPlay has micro lags time to time. Expansion? XPlay. IR sensors? 2014. In some regards, the 3rd generation G performs better than the XPlay. Really it all boils down to what your explicit needs are.
Ok thanks. Do you really feel that camera improved that much?

Low light it still isn't as good as the g4, and s6, but overall, I find it worlds better. I'm not doing anything crazy, but overall I find it to be a marked improvement over the 2014.
The phone overall doesn't have that same feel of speed, but I'm not sure if that's something that will be fixed with kernel optimizations. Why exactly is it that you want a Moto device vs from another manufacturer?
great thanks,
i always liked Moto, from my Moto MIlestone.
LG: i tried LG G2 but i had a horrible experience with their customer service and sold all devices i had at home (tv, soundbar etc). Samsung and Sony, i dont like their interface. Huawei, i hate their interface. I love Stock Android, but Nexus is way too big...
This is my story, and that is why i tried Windows for about a year now, cause i wanted someting different...

Hi,
I tested both and ended sending back the play and keeping the x 2014, here are the reasons:
- got the x 2014 32 gb on an amazon deal for 299 euros against the 350 for the play
- the play was just too big for me, 5,2 inches is the biggest I can deal with
- the play's buttons felt way too cheap, they were loose and rattled all the time, for me that was not acceptable
- the play hasn't got gyroscope (no photosphere pictures) or IR sensors, and waving at the phone to turn it on is really comfortable
- the x 2014 feels much sturdier
- the x 2014 is snappier, I could notice the microlags on the play
Battery life is much better on the play, but now I carry an external battery with me just in case. The camera is also better, but the one from the x 2014 isn't that bad. The play has a SD card slot but 32 GB is enough for my use. The play display is fine, but so is the x 2014's.
If storage, battery life and camera is important for you and you are OK with the size go for the play.
So there it is, hope it helped!

so after playing with both phones, i am feeling that Moto X Play is way to big for me, and i dont feel that i have a special phone in my hand, whereas i had this feeling with Moto X 2014.
i just wish there was a phone like Moto X 2014 out there in the market, with a better camera, external sd card, and slightly better battery.
Now i am searching for another brand, and maybe i will leave Motorola because of this.

HTC One m8 or M9.
In terms of speed, HTC M8 and Moto X are tie as far as I can tell. HTC One M8 is way prettier than Moto and feels better in hand than moto.
So I would say M8 > Moto X 2014.
M9 is almost identical to m8 except chips and camera.
Lots of people say M9> M8 . But considering the price, I love m8 better.
From my hands on experience with all major Android phones, the overall best one in 2014 is M8.
2015 best phone hands down to S6/S6 edge. It blows everything else away. And yes, the new touchwiz is NOT slow at all.

It's 2017 - is the Moto X (2014) still recommended?

I've the chance to buy probably BNDS / BNIB units at the same cost as say more recent MT6737M/ Snapdragon 435 even MT6795 units with microsd, 64bit support.
I'm tempted by having the snapdragon 801 at a low cost but is it too late now expecially with the lack of 64bit support or does its raw power still relevant?
What would you do?
Moto X was a great device in its era. Even today I still praise it for the most compact device with a 5,2 inch screen. I can operate it easily with one hand. But,in today's standart,it's an outdated device. You got plenty devices with better specs and prices to choose. The most complaint with Moto X in my opinion is the battery life. I own a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and comparing both is so pathetic. Battery endurance in Redmi Note 4 is so much better. If Moto X is the device with 4000 mah battery, I think it's still countable. With custom ROM,Moto X is still fast and fluid. I prefer using Moto X daily than my RN4X coz the design fits perfectly in my pocket.

I don't even know how to root it to get sunshine. Kingroot doesnt work and sunshine says the firmware isnt compatible.
Absolutely......................................not. Look I love my X 2014 but it was a flawed device when it came out and that didn't let it age well. The camera and battery were terrible when it came out, now they are down right garbage in comparison to mid rangers. The screen was average when it came out, now it's terrible in comparison. The lack of fingerprint sensor might not seem like a big deal but until you use it, you don't know what your missing. The phone is still smooth but how long until developers move on. The design in my opinion was still one of the best, a classic for sure. It's just not worth it.
Get a Moto G5 Plus or similar, they are under 200 sales.
Battery is too bad nowadays even if performance is alright, if you absolutely must go Moto then get the G5 Plus
Thanks for your feedback , a few questions to keep this going if you dont mind ...

This is disappointing -- 1 factor that makes me consider this is (since i had no real life experience with it) -- that the AMOLED screen and camera would still be competent to comparable models.

OK, if while considering all the above I add the relative context that in my area if available the G5 plus is 200USD, while the Moto X would be 110USD bnew, would that make it more appealing?
I've had mine for 2 years, and still loving it. I bought it in a carrier store for 400 Canadian Dollars. Since I can only buy phones in a store at full retail price, my choices are somewhat limited. I still can't find a "better" phone at $500 CAD. My Moto X 2014 is running the latest Android perfectly with 2GB RAM, and will run Android 8.0 Oreo (custom ROMs). The only consideration is band support, as it may not support the latest and fastest LTE bands used by some carriers nowadays. Also, this phone has NFC, some lower priced new phones may not.
The things I would be looking for in a new phone: longer battery life, latest LTE bands support, and maybe a bigger screen, like 5.5+ inch.
I just got that phone about 3 days ago... It is just amazing..remember.. It was a flagship.. Soft/hdw integratiom are perfect. Even with low battery and 2 gb of ram.. It's more worthy than several mid ranges phone mentioned. Besides, you get plenty of development for at least one more year.. Go for it!
