[Q] How to root my phone [on stock 5.1] - Moto X Q&A

Hey everyone! I just wanted to know how to root my phone; Moto X 2013 running on stock 5.1. Never rooted my phone before. Can someone please provide me with links and sources on how to root my phone?
Thanks in advance.

A little search would have easily given an answer to your query.
Anyway, what is the status of your phone's boot loader? Locked or unlocked?

There are no methods to root a 5.1 firmware with a locked bootloader.
However, you can unlock the boot loader nd then root 5.1 (voids warranty in some areas).

Won't the bootloader be updated when I got the OTA 5.1 update? That's why I wanted an updated way to Unlock and Root my Moto X XT1052.
P.S. I'm not going to downgrade or anything.

XT1052 is eligible for the official unlock bootloader program by Motorola. Hence you can request for the key. If you unlocked the boot loader with the key obtained from Motorola, you are safe to UPGRADE to future updates from Motorola and you can root it. (Applies to 5.1 update as well )

Simiar scenario here as well. Flashed 2.8.6.0 via mfastboot, went into recovery getting the android distress logo with "no command" message.
Tried with a lower version of TWRP, but it seems those aren't compatible with 5.1

Exactly why I opened this thread. I've seen people posting about this issue on Reddit. So hey, let's ask people have a knowledge on this base.

[Q] Root the European Version MOTO X XT1052?

Hey guys, has anybody achieved root on the spanking new XT1052 the European variant of the Moto X?
I tried getting the bootloader unlocked from Moto support site and apparently the device was not up for bootloader unlocking.. Bumer
Would the XT1053 root methods work? I'm a semi Noob so I'd rather ask before I do something stupid.
Thanks in advance people.
I believe that phone shipped with version 4.4.2, which means the only way to gain root(at this time) is by unlocking the bootloader.

Once you unlock the bootloader how do you gain root?
I had no problems unlocking my XT1052. Are you sure you put the string together correctly?

Flash a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) via fastboot and then flash SuperSu zip. There are numerous guides how to do this exactly.
Thats the thing, i get the unlocking data when i paste it in the required feild to get an email to unlock the bootloader, it says my bootloader is not qualified for unlocking?

I checked the info thread but it didn't say if the process worked for 4.4.2, I found out once bootloader is unlocked you can flash as needed. Thanks for the response!
All the guides about installing custom recovery after unlocking the bootloader posted here are for 4.4. Are they applicable to 4.4.2 also?

AT&T Moto X - 4.4.4 - Root & Unlock Boot loader?

Is there any root method that will work for an at&t moto x running on 4.4.4 and unlock bootloader? Or am i stuck running stock?
Enjoy stock, you're stuck. Unless you find a bootloader unlock code.
Next time search, this question has been answered too many times already.
Always read the stickies... Like this one from the general section,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2826159
?
What the hell.. c'mon man it's been like 10 years... still not a method.
You may have found some threads on here that recommend Sunshine, a $25 app that you can download (link below). The developers say that it may work for some users that are on 4.4.4. Try it. It will confirm for you whether it will unlock before you pay. It successfully worked for me when I was on 4.2.2. Good luck.

Your bootloader is UNlocked? If so, just flash TWRP recovery, reboot-bootloader, go into TWRP and it should prompt you to root. If not, install SuperSU zip from TWRP.
Now, if your bootloader is still LOCKED, then you are stuck. Sunshine has not worked on ATT XT1058 that has 4.4.4 on it. (and before you ask... no, you can't safely/successfully downgrade all parts of the X in order to use Sunshine).
As for how long its been... As android matures, there are less and less bugs and vulnerabilities to exploit/hack to gain root access if you can't unlock the bootloader. The number of people capable of finding them dwindles too.

I had it unlocked already. To root it I followed the steps on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fzih8xkki0. It's an old video but it worked for me. I just had to get an updated version of SuperSu and TWRP recovery. That's all.

Unlocked bootloader for at&t moto x 2014

Hey does anyone know if or when the moto x 2014 will get its bootloader officially unlocked by Motorola. Was researching on the site and it seems as though Verizon models are getting their bootloaders officially unlocked. Since they said the carrier models aren't getting marshmallow they could at least unlock our bootloaders so wencan get root and flash some roms. Or if anyone knows how to get it done unofficially..... I'm all ears. Thanks
I'm unlocked on Verizon, but att I don't know if or when. If you haven't upgraded above 5.0 you can root with mofo and unlock with sunshine.

That's the thing, motorola never announced that verizon got it. It just magically started to work when someone tried to unlock his bootloader then they told all of us. There is no way to know if it will ever be able to be unlocked. But everyone can keep trying, maybe one day it will work.

Don't know of a way outside of unlock code from moto then. If you can gain root (at least temp root) sunshine will still unlock it. But haven't seen anybody figure it out yet for 5.1. Maybe keep an eye on kingroot see if they've got it yet.

I've tried this already almost 20 times. Rooting via king Root won't get past 56% every time. Getting failure again and again and again.

Clear the cache of the app after it fails. Read the thread. It is random how it works...but it does.

Moto X 2nd Generation Bootloader unlock

Hey there, I've been searching for hours but can't seem to find the method to unlock the bootloader of Motorola MOTO X (XT1097) 2nd gen (AT&T) running android version 5.1.1
Update: I managed to root (temporarily) with kingroo v 8.4.1. To do so all you have to do is factory restore moto x and then without activating Google ID do following
1) try root with king root which will fail, no need to panic.
2) clear cache of King root and then run it again.
Voila you've achieved temporary root permissions.

Try motorola bootloader unlock site which is probably not possible but worth a try, else search sunshine bootloader thread support moto x 2014..
I've tried that already, in vain. Kingroot and sunshine thingy seems to works. Too bad it is not free :crying: I wish it was free.
