Hey there, I've been searching for hours but can't seem to find the method to unlock the bootloader of Motorola MOTO X (XT1097) 2nd gen (AT&T) running android version 5.1.1
Update: I managed to root (temporarily) with kingroo v 8.4.1. To do so all you have to do is factory restore moto x and then without activating Google ID do following
1) try root with king root which will fail, no need to panic.
2) clear cache of King root and then run it again.
Voila you've achieved temporary root permissions.

Try motorola bootloader unlock site which is probably not possible but worth a try, else search sunshine bootloader thread support moto x 2014..
I've tried that already, in vain. Kingroot and sunshine thingy seems to works. Too bad it is not free :crying: I wish it was free.
You can check the status in fastboot

Bootloader is locked I've checked. But that's not the problem here, now the problem is sunshine, it's not free to use

Hey guys I'm new to rooting my moto x. I have a White Moto X on sprint running 4.4.2
Boot loader=Locked (I can unlock it)
Can anybody point me in the right direction to rooting my moto? Thanks. Any links would be helpful
Sent from my XT1056 using XDA Free mobile app
you have to unlock your bootloader first , install a custom recovery and then flash the supersu file in order to root it.
bootloader unlock : https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
custom recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/recovery-unlocked-twrp-2-6-3-1-android-t2534850 or this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/xt10xx-philz-touch-t2612149 and then flash the supersu file . Google if you are confused and correct me if i am wrong. All the best and happy Flashing

Too much work, just click on the first sticky thread in the General section.
Hello
I recently bought a Moto X (European version) and I would like to have the Xposed framework on it. To do that I need to have root access as I understand it. To gain root access I need to unlock the bootloader, or do I? I have read a couple of threads where an unlocked bootloader wasn't needed to root the phone, there was apparently some sort of exploit to forgo that. I'm wondering if that is possible with the Android 4.4.4 and European version combo?
I appreciate your time and help!
Best regards
ArticHood
Yes you need an unlocked bootloader to Root 4.4.4.
See the one stop shop for Root in the general section, right near the top. ?

With 4.4.2, the vulnerability/exploit used to disable write protection on the 2013 X was patched and no longer works.
With 4.4.4, the vulnerability/exploit used to root phones with a locked bootloader has been patched.
With 4.4.4, the only way to root and disable write protection is to unlock the bootloader.
Link to Moto X unlocked bootloader?

Hello everybody. I'm looking to re-root my moto x. I currently have a Sprint Moto X running Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat. I have my boot loader unlocked and I have prior experience to rooting. I've been looking for a while now and I can't find a thread showing a 4.4.4 root method. Any links or guides would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
If you are bootloader unlocked just flash a recovery in fastboot and then flash the current SU zip from chainfire's website.
Thank you sir. Much appreciated. Didn't know if it was like the old jellybean method but apparently it is. Thanks for the advice
Yep, no problem. It's the same no matter what version you are on.

Were you able to get this done? I'm thinking about updating to 4.4.4 but want to have root as well. I'm on the Dev Edition for Verizon.

With a VZW Dev X, just get the bootloader unlock from Moto's site, use it to unlock the bootloader, and you can always root.
Heck, since moto gives out the bootloader for your phone, you could even update, then get/use the unlock code, and root at any time.
Hey everyone! I just wanted to know how to root my phone; Moto X 2013 running on stock 5.1. Never rooted my phone before. Can someone please provide me with links and sources on how to root my phone?
Thanks in advance.
A little search would have easily given an answer to your query.
Anyway, what is the status of your phone's boot loader? Locked or unlocked?

There are no methods to root a 5.1 firmware with a locked bootloader.
However, you can unlock the boot loader nd then root 5.1 (voids warranty in some areas).

Won't the bootloader be updated when I got the OTA 5.1 update? That's why I wanted an updated way to Unlock and Root my Moto X XT1052.
P.S. I'm not going to downgrade or anything.

XT1052 is eligible for the official unlock bootloader program by Motorola. Hence you can request for the key. If you unlocked the boot loader with the key obtained from Motorola, you are safe to UPGRADE to future updates from Motorola and you can root it. (Applies to 5.1 update as well )

Simiar scenario here as well. Flashed 2.8.6.0 via mfastboot, went into recovery getting the android distress logo with "no command" message.
Tried with a lower version of TWRP, but it seems those aren't compatible with 5.1

Hey does anyone know if or when the moto x 2014 will get its bootloader officially unlocked by Motorola. Was researching on the site and it seems as though Verizon models are getting their bootloaders officially unlocked. Since they said the carrier models aren't getting marshmallow they could at least unlock our bootloaders so wencan get root and flash some roms. Or if anyone knows how to get it done unofficially..... I'm all ears. Thanks
I'm unlocked on Verizon, but att I don't know if or when. If you haven't upgraded above 5.0 you can root with mofo and unlock with sunshine.

That's the thing, motorola never announced that verizon got it. It just magically started to work when someone tried to unlock his bootloader then they told all of us. There is no way to know if it will ever be able to be unlocked. But everyone can keep trying, maybe one day it will work.

Don't know of a way outside of unlock code from moto then. If you can gain root (at least temp root) sunshine will still unlock it. But haven't seen anybody figure it out yet for 5.1. Maybe keep an eye on kingroot see if they've got it yet.

I've tried this already almost 20 times. Rooting via king Root won't get past 56% every time. Getting failure again and again and again.

Clear the cache of the app after it fails. Read the thread. It is random how it works...but it does.
