SAR value - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just browsing reddit and I found an interesting post about our Nexus 6. The phone has a SAR value of 1.56., which is barely under the legal limit of 1.6. For those who do not know, SAR is a measure of the radiation emitted by phones. Was just wondering if anyone knew this, or is worried since our SAR value is high.

my right side of my head glows(im right handed), does that count? :silly:

That's why my left boy has gotten bigger! [emoji13]

The iPhone 6 has a SAR value of 1.58, and the 6 Plus has a rating if 1.59. Comparatively, ours is low!
All about prospective.

ok, im gonna go out on a limb and assume that most people arent bothered.

.... I so do not care. ^^^

Is there a Doctor in the house?! (radiation)

I've never been one to buy into the cancer causing aspect of mobile phones, but after recently seeing the City of San Francisco pass a law requiring cell phones show there radiation output it got me thinking .
How much radiation does the N1 put out? How is that in comparison to other phones? Do smart phones put out higher amounts of radiation?
My biggest concern, and what got me thinking was the fact that until 6 mos. or so ago, I only had the phone near my head on the occasional phone call (duh).
But now I have a Nexus dock that I use as my alarm/bedside clock. This thing sits near my head 7-8 hrs every single night running bluetooth, etc.
Is there legitimate reason for concern?
I realize this should prolly go in the overall General thread, but I'm never up there and I'm mostly curious about the N1's radiation while using the desktop dock.

If you're so worried. Move to a cave dude. Do you know how many "wireless" signals and radio transmissions there are in a city?
23548723958723985729837652983572 to be precise.
Why don't you get a Geiger Counter if you're that paranoid?
wait, every phone goes thru FCC testing and given a SAR's rating, and this info is available for every phone on the market. the nexus was rather low at around 0.7 if i remember. what is this radiation thing that san francisco is asking for? i thought it would be the same thing.
for more info on radiation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_radiation_and_health
list of highest radiation phones:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6602_7-5020357-1.html
FCC says SAR is 0.37 head / 0.74 Body W/Kg for 1gram on GSM.
international standards use 2grams which would make it max at 1.39. The US max is 1.6
geiger meter isnt going to help -_-
what is this radiation thing that san francisco is asking for?

It's just simply a law that will require all retailers to display the amount of radiation each phone emits.

Easy Tiger, I'm not paranoid, just asking a question that I'm sure others have more knowledge about than I do.
And thanks to flybyme's helpful cnet link I found this piece of information:
If you're concerned about limiting your SAR exposure, you can take a few easy steps beyond purchasing a handset with a low SAR. You can text instead placing a voice call, use a speakerphone whenever possible, and carry your phone at least one inch from your body. Some researchers also caution against using your phone in areas with poor coverage since phones emit more radiation when searching for a signal. Children, which have smaller and thinner skulls, should limit cell phone use, and all users, children and adults, should not sleep with an active phone next to their bedside or under their pillow.

plus, dont mobile phones emit the msot radiation when you're in a call?otherwise, when its standby all its doing is jus in the bath of EM waves that we all are in...
Did you not read the study that stated phone radiation actuality reduces the chances of developing Alzheimer's?

Look there's even a picture of the N1 there. Look on PubMed or something for a definitive study.

Oneplus 5 a potential collectors item in the future?

Hi All,
After learning that Oneplus were making the decision to announce and then launcher the (ok it's a nice phone) Oneplus 5T after just 5 months? I've never heard of that happen to a flagship which wasn't a complete failure and had as much going for it as the 5 does?
The Oneplus has pretty much disappeared from all locations where it was available, which means there can't be that many new devices out in the wild anymore if any at all, do you think if kept in decent condition that it could be something of a collectors item in the months / years to come? Maybe going a bit far with the collectors item thing but you know what i mean, like a niche piece of kit that you can't get hold of no more.
Just a thought, because unless people had the money or an upgrade in that time frame, it just wasn't going to be available and now it's gone?
Compared to the 3 and 3T the 5 and 5T are in a unique situation it's a slightly different form factor the finger print is on the front and it retains the capacitive non on screen buttons batterly life is every so slightly better than the 5T.
Everything else is the same so true I can definitely see a few anti 2:1 bezeless phone users prefer the one plus 5 form factor. Although i probably wouldn't go as far as to call it a collector's item. The main blemish on the OnePlus 5 is the jelly phone screen thing aside from that i can see a manufacturer offer both models and both selling reasonably well. With jelly phone screen i think it might skew to the newer phone, it doesn't bother me personally but I know there are people that see the affect all the time and that could get irritating. I on the other hand either don't see it or just got used to it.

They did the same thing with the 3 and the 3t. If any were gonna be collectable it will be the stars wars version or the other limited versions of the device and even then the price will still go down.
As for caliber of device. It is still a mid range device really. Nothing too special.

Lol collectors item yea I know a bit much I did write that btw.
Point I'm making is, the release time was so small, now it's not being made no more, it's not even close to a year.
Any idea how many units were actually made?
A limited edition Zippo only has 250,000 made sometimes less, no how many they sold / made but it's definitely a niche phone now.
I would agree that cellphones don't work like that. When a new model is out, the previous one takes the "second hand status", in which people will be interested in, but only at a super low budget.
Then you have to keep in mind that OnePlus is an "unknown" brand. See all the reviews on specialist websites, all say it's so great but look around you, it's Samsung and Apple, cause people don't read that.
And if we think that OP phones are special for developpement community, also take a look at how people around us don't even change the default wallpaper that their phone had when they turned it on first time
To get back on subject, that's why it's actually terrible that OP releases a flagship so fast, it just kills the value of what we do have in a flash. And there are already rumours of the OP6 coming in march (and any rumour about One Plus phones is nearly always true).
Nice for those * silly * enough to go from 5 to 5T

Mid range??
Maybe we base out caliber of device on something completely different, I personally go by performance and stamina, along with a few other things.
The Oneplus is not mid range, the Snapdragon 600 series devices are mid range, the Oneplus is 100% high tier, price no but performance and hardware yes.

I agree, I'll not be getting the 6, it's HTC for me all day long from now on, unless something groundbreaking comes out, couldn't go for Sammy again, they're dead to me, their OS is just nasty now, doesn't even feel like android no more.
I know what you mean with their release timing, but I think they've overshot it here surely, 5 months? That's insane, and for a device which is over the mid range bracket at £507 with shipping? That's not cheap to only be told that in 5 months it can't be bought no more?
I dunno, I had a thought and thought I'd put it out there, collectors item no ok that was a bit far but definitely a niche product (popularity aside)

Yeah.
And to add to those thoughts, one might buy let's say a Samsung Note 8. It cost twice the price of the OP 5T, but you get the top of your brand of choice for a year. If you try to do that with One Plus phones, that will cost you more than that over the same period.
And your Samsung will probably still have a great resell value...
I like OP phones, but to me, they are really doing a terrible thing to their fans here.
Oh well, let's see how it goes

lol ok so HTC who always make a flag ship device which is always has been comparable in price to Samsung ( I'm assuming that's what you're comparing it to) HTC usually misses a few features out, LG again top tier, again missing things not in others, can't see your point mate.
I know what you're getting at but I disagree wholeheartedly.
The oneplus is anything but a mid range device and in many ways it's superior to flagships like the S8
more ram
more internal memory
faster CPU and better utilisation of said chipset, better use of battery and stamina than the S8 /S8+
dual cameras
fastest charging on the market
Where is the oneplus falling short?
SD slot? water proofing ? stereo speakers ? None of those features makes a high end device.
All of the other OEMs are missing the same things, not to mention that Oneplus listens a lot more than the other OEMs.
edit: anyway, this is moving off topic so I'm leaving this here, plus the topic probably want received how I intended it

it won't but the screen will evolve, the back of the phone had always been by majority unutilised, either way you can be sure that it'll never stay the same, things evolve or people get bored and even if we didn't, companies believe in evolving and ever changing so it'll happen in some way shape or form, hopefully for the better and not just for change.

High radiation level

Saw this article in my Google feed, I think it's worth sharing
https://www.gizchina.com/2019/02/08...ones-emitting-high-radiation-as-per-a-report/
Lol.
I mean I dont use my phone for calling (which is weird), so the radiation level shouldnt be too high for me
And if I am calling someone I always speak to other people on speaker.
I think that they dont care about optimizing the protection because it would cost money.
But what do I really know
I don't worry about it, since I use hands free or BT 99.99% of the time.
Plus, some of those SAR graphs are a bit out of line with reality.
I'm worried as well. Enough to switch to Note 9.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Not too worries. Very small amount if those readings are accurate and there are a hundred of things that could kill me at any moment when I step out of the house.
Is this only for phone calls?
Lol this is funny
You've ever thought of the radiation of lightbulbs and neonlights? Now there's an issue that should make you worry. What about the electronic ignition and injection of your car? You're sitting right next to it!
Or... relax! It's the same radio waves that are surrounding us all day, anywhere you go. Stop the hysteria

I agree.
From the article.
"German certification for environmental friendliness only permits phones with 0.60 or less SAR value. That puts every phone in the above list under a red flag."
That includes the iPhone.
But like a previous poster said.
I rarely keep the phone on my body.
When I'm talking it's usually over BT. Has the OP looked into radiation of BT headsets? Just say'n.
But for my it's BT in the car.
As a kid, I sat in front of CRT televisions.
I used oscilloscopes with CRT displays.
I used old fashioned walkie talkies.
I think there are bigger things to worry about.
Eh, I've lived long enough.
I used my first Motorola cellphone back to 1993. You know the big thing like a brick. At that time, cellphones were mainly to calls. I never felt any uncomfortable at all.
Let it be.

Skimping everywhere possible.
Sure, there are iPhones in the list but not flagship models. Interesting that there are no Samsung phones listed and also interesting to see the Pixel 3 making an appearance.
Basically the list is full of cheap a$$ hardware.
It may not be a deal breaker but if there are 2 equivalent phones and one has a lower radiation level I will choose it and I think it speaks to the overall quality of the product.
Who needs some tinfoil?

Agree with that, i don't care much about radiation level but seeing it's all the low quality phone that are on the top of the list and mostly samsung phone on the very end, i think it says a lot.
this is weird by the way because i live in poor signal reception area and all the xiaomi, oneplus i had had all a lot of difficulty to connect to the network, when on the other hand most of the samsung i had managed to works much better.

I was recently in a poor signal area in Bali, I had my OP6T and the person I was with had a Note 8, both had the same simcards in them and my OP6T struggled to get any reception whereas the Note 8 was consistently better, still poor but better and at least it was usable usable.
Disappointing really, if we are going to be irradiated we should at least get kiss ass reception.

SAR value

Isn't there anyone a bit worried about the high SAR value(radiation) of the s10?
Looking at the attached link, there are worse phones.
I haven't had any issues with my S8+, which is similar and both are within allowable limits.

Keep in mind that those values are from tests conducted on mice and according to some experts, you would have to keep the phone to your ear 10 hours a day for months to even have a chance of getting harmful radiation.
One warning though, I would keep you mouse off the phone as much a possible because we know how they love to talk.

Non ionizing radiation, yeah not concerned. The only way cellular radiation hurts you is the warning it can cause, and the power levels needed are orders of magnitude larger to appreciably raise your tissues temperature.
I think u guys don't know about the exynos versions... All of them have near the limit values..
European Union - 2.0
US - 1.6
If the numbers bother you then don't buy the phone. It's been deemed safe because those numbers are well below the danger levels. If the phone is taped to your head then you have a problem, if not, the sky isn't falling and the phone is safe.

U act as if u know everything... The radiation levels indicated are not only for head but also body distance from the phone.. So if people play games for hours or put the phone in their pockets for a long time there is bound to be some effect.

But again, it's non-ionizing radiation. You would get more of this type of radiation living close to an airport than having the phone in your pocket.

I was surprised to see this but to my another surprise huawei is doing so good with huawei mate 20 pro with sar value of head:0.40, body:0.96
Even the p30 pro has head:0.67, body:0.99 which is well below the limit. Samsung is just getting greedy their phones have head sar low but body sar is way too high.
Looking forward to s11, note 10, mate 30 pro

I looked at the iPhone 11 a day or so ago and the only one that compared to the P4 is the iPhone 11 Pro which costs $999 not $699. The regular iPhone 11 is big and ugly whereas the Pro version looks great. But that's $200 more than the P4 with very similar specs camera wise, size and performance. I presume that since Apple doesn't allow much modification of the OS or features that 4GB ram will be enough since they tend to optimize pretty well. I say wait a bit before trashing either device or saying one is better than the other. It just came out yesterday by golly.
This is neither a question nor an answer. Also, can we wait a bit before trashing a new device that was just announced? There aren't even any in-depth reviews in the wild.

What.
I think that people cried for many years asking for more RAM in the Pixels.
Now we have extra 2GB of RAM, extra 30Hz display and a 7nm SoC for 90€-100€ less than the Pixel 3. (Pixel 3 was 860€ last week, Pixel 4 is 760€ this week, in Spain Google store).
(I'm not talking about the other features because I just consider they are optional or just even with what we had).
Considering that. the phone is amazing and a decent upgrade for my Pixel 2.
What I can't be happy about is the battery life. I think battery life in Android has been always a ****. I have great battery life (still much worse than 23 months ago) on my Pixel 2 at home. But in another country/city (and specially in an hotel I'm staying) where I work, battery life is much worse. I still can't figure out what's the reason. Signal doesn't seem different. And my phone is telling me this useless info with a system app with no-name which is probably the guilty:
https://imgur.com/a/ySRAtyP
So personally I'm not excited about the Pixel 4, because the Google the Pixel 2 is not delivering a full day of battery where I'm living Monday to Thursday (Zürich), and at home I get more than a day (sometimes I can get 36 hours with at least 3 SoT at home city), but at "work" city I get half of a day no matter if I use the phone or not. It gets crazy.
And I know the Pixel 4 will be fine for 12 months, but will become a problem after that, just like happened with my Pixel 2.

You know there will be those that now say.. only 6GB? We need 8! lol As for battery in various locations I have found the same and I'm not sure why either. I can be on my wifi or even on LTE in my home town but when I spend some time in NYC the battery drops like crazy. One of these days I'll do a dump and send it off to Better BS to analyze. But for now I just plug it in for a few minutes somewhere when I can get to my USB C connector. It's rare that over a 15 or 16 hour period I'd lose full battery.
But you say that your new P4 will last a year with acceptable battery. Why is that a problem if you're getting a P5 in October of 2020? You are right?

Well, the only problem with that. Is that I like to buy things that last. Example: My Pixel 2 will go for my lady... She's a proud user of a Nexus 5X, so this will be a hell of an upgrade. The Nexus 5X will go to my mother, which barely uses a phone.
So this is why I care about Pixels lasting as much as possible.
(I'll probably replace Pixel 2 battery life with a new one next year, giving up the water resistance).
Also I'm not sure I'll get the 5.. with the new pricing, maybe yes. If it goes back to the old pricing. I'll stick with the Pixel 4, at least 2 years.
I'm sure we put a Custom ROM in any Pixel, without many "AI" stuff etc, and we will probably get great battery life.
Last time I tried this....was a month ago (to install a Kernel with wireguard support, because I wanted to try VPN when travelling) but then google pay stopped working....And I don't have time for Magisk, root and all that (or maybe I don't like putting to many hacks on it). So that was the only day I did 2 factory resets in a day LOL spent the entire afternoon / evening.
As for battery, the main issue is that I'm staying in a hotel where I don't know wtf is going on but my battery drains like crazy...Today I'm trying Airplane mode + WiFi. (Yesterday I had to disable/clear/forcestop Chrome because something was leeching battery, even if it was disabled, probably SystemWebView).
Next week I'll try completely airplane mode.

Soooo get one of those devices? Why complain about one you haven't even tried because of what you perceive based on specs?

I looked at the iPhone 11 a day or so ago and the only one that compared to the P4 is the iPhone 11 Pro which costs $999 not $699. The regular iPhone 11 is big and ugly whereas the Pro version looks great. But that's $200 more than the P4 with very similar specs camera wise, size and performance. I presume that since Apple doesn't allow much modification of the OS or features that 4GB ram will be enough since they tend to optimize pretty well. Ugly to whom? The iPhone XR outsold the iPhone XS and XS max and both those phones look like the 11 pro/pro max from the front. The XR looks just like the 11 from the front and will outsold the others again so it’s seems like ppl don’t find it that ugly.
The 11 pro being $200 more than the pixel 4 is 1000% a better buy than the pixel 4. Battery life is fantastic, so are the cameras and they are more versatile. The pixel 4 is a terrible buy.

Do you need to wait for a device to be out to scrutinize it? Since when? Usually iPhone users are the gullible ones to spend lots of money on a device that doesn’t offer equal value. You’re ok spending $800 plus tax on a device that has a tiny battery and is clearly inferior to other offerings at the same price or cheaper?

Uhhh..... yeah. That is a dumb question I’m sorry to say that. Ok let me give you an example so you can realize how dumb that is. Let’s say google announces a pixel 4 with a 2200 mah battery, a snapdragon 845 and a single camera for $999. You mean to tell me I’d have to wait to have the device in hand in order to have an opinion about it? Do you realize how stupid that sounds? Since when cant we have an opinion based on specs?

Ok this thread is a waste of valuable energy. The op is trolling us. Let's not give it oxygen. Outta here for good. Do the same.

I think you missed the point. Why are you complaining about the device instead of simply choosing one of the other options?

I didn’t miss the point. HAs it occurred to you that maybe I was anticipating the pixel 4 and was very disappointed after the announcement? Which is why I’m sharing my thoughts here. Even if I wasn’t, last I check I’m entitled to express my opinion.

Great news for you then, so I hope you enjoy your Oneplus or iPhone and it brings you joy. Bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out
That's the same thread as many others, with the same complaint as many others.
If you don't like don't buy it.
And please, close the thread

Sensitive fanboy? Says the iPhone user on an Android site slagging an Android phone off like a very sensitive fanboy.
Sorry but you posted your negative view of the pixel phone in the Help section. How was that a request for help or an answer to someones need for help. In what way was your post productive to the help section? Honestly, I think they should charge you storage fees for keeping this thread on here. What was the point of your post?

How is it not productive? This is putting things in perspective. The thread goes left when you sensitive clowns feel some type of way because the phone isn’t praised to your liking. Had I opened this thread and said the pixel 4 will be amazing you wouldn’t have any issues with it of course. But because I criticize it because it is absolutely warranted, you guys getinyour feelings because you take it as a personal attack. It isn’t, it’s me criticizing the phone for the asking price because it’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s not trolling but you guys translate it as trolling because again, I’m not praising what you wanna buy. Well tough sh*t, I don’t praise products that I feel are a total robbery. If you wanna be objective and give your opinion on why you think $800 for that 2800 mah battery and all the sensors is worth it then by all means let’s discuss it. If you gonna get in your feelings then too bad for you.

This thread has been moved to the Pixel 4 General subforum, as it's a discussion. The Help/Q&A subforum isn't the right place for this, since you're not looking for help.
Also, some light thread cleaning; a few posts have been deleted. I'm allowing the thread for now, because as said, everyone can have an opinion. However, XDA Forum Rules exist for a reason. Knock off the flaming/disrespect and language. Keep it civil and clean; you can all express opinions without the need for degrading others. That goes for everyone.

Productive, like going to Apple store to complain they don't sell Android phones productive? In that case way productive!
As for sensitive clowns, sorry but you seem very sensitive to the fact we will not validate your delicate ego and agree that Google should immediately listen to your evaluation and action on it immediately. I'm going to get the phone but I have not created a thread on here telling everyone I love the phone and everyone must buy it. And I have not posted a thread on Apple/iPhone site saying why I hate the iPhone and that's why I'm not getting it. You just created a thread to complain about a product because it didn't suit your needs. Funny first reply was to paraphrase, "your choice, goodbye" and here we are. You seem to be taking it very personal that we don't agree with you and respond as if being attacked, as shown by the rebuff "Well tough sh*t, I don’t praise products that I feel are a total robbery".
Let's wind this up. I don't take it personally that you don't like the phone. I've ordered it, and your views had no influence on that decision. I have not defended the phone, I have merely raised the point that your post has no value to the help section for the rest of the members. As for the attempt to validate the reason for starting the thread, I think there is more to the phone than battery and sensors for $800. I didn't buy it for the battery, and my Pixel 2 lasts all day for me so it won't be a problem. I do sometimes have to use the phone screen when driving so the motion sense tech will be a great benefit there like the new cars have the touchless systems. Is it productive to go to a website and review a product you've never used?
Anyway so that I can convey to you how much I am not offended or upset or feel under attack, I sign off here and will leave the thread to the people who are upset. I hope you find the phone you want, and if you still need to vent about how much you hate this phone you can continue your diatribe here in hopes someone gives a f__k and is happy to stroke your ego.
I hope you find the right phone for you. Goodbye, I won't let the door hit me on the way out.

That’s a dumb example “complain to the Apple store that they don’t sell android phones”... how does that relate to this thread exactly? You must have missed the part where I said I was interested in this phone but it fell short. Red herring
No the sensitive ones are you guys that can’t stomach a smartphone scrutiny. That is crazy, it’s just a phone it’s not like I’m attacking your family or something.
Honestly I’m offended by google. I’m offended because I was highly anticipating this phone and it is such a let down. And I do feel insulted by google thinking they can pull a fast one on me by offering such stingy specs at that price. I find it offensive seriously.
Historically speaking, android users have always been smart with their purchase, definitely smarter than iPhone users imo. We like to have all the bells and whistles at a reasonable price. This year, the pixel 4 is the total opposite of that. It has some bells here and there but again, that battery size with that price tag is just crazy. It’s just not acceptable for me. If it is to you then more power to you, obviously I have no say or power in your or anyone else’s decision. But I always thought I’d android users were smarter with our purchase, seems like it’s a thing of the past.
I’m ordering a oneplus 7T tomorrow soon as the orders go live and I’m very excited about. I think it offers the best bang for the buck. Enjoy your pixel 4, it’s your money and your decision.
Is it productive for me to go to a website and review a product I’ve never use? That’s the wrong question to ask. Here’s a more fitting one, If a company unveils a product, do I get to express my opinion on it before having the device in hand? Or I must absolutely have the device in hand before being able to give an opinion on it?
