This might be the first phone I leave stock. I do miss xposed on my htc, but aside from that. I don't see any reason to root. Am I the only one with similar feelings?

So... you have to make changes to the build.xxx file? Are all phones affected by this ram issue? I haven't experienced any issues with apps crashing or lagging.

Honestly other than debloating, I could have left it stock as well.
I have incredibly itchy fingers though If I'm not messing with something that can turn my phone into a paperweight, I'm not having fun. Even the ram management stock wasn't noticeable to me. The Tmobile bloat is horrible, and I love loading ROMs and screwing with stuff I shouldn't be for the sake of the community.
LMT pie, adaway, custom roms, alliance framework, volume warning removal, de bloating, viper4android, etc... Root is always necessary.

You are not missing much by not rooting. Nothing out there anyways. Most bloat can be disabled. No fix for ram issues. Only samsung can fix it if they want.

Agree, you won't miss much by not rooting. I have disabled most of the bloat which are allowed to be disabled. I can switch between apps without any issues. I got a replacement device last week because the previous one will just turn off itself even if the battery is charged. the "new" (Actually is seems refurbished) works well so far. I have repeated the same process on disabling the unwanted apps, turning off wifi calling and VoLTE, screen on auto brightness, all the usual stuff. Battery life is not great, but can last a working day with moderate usage. If you are on the road, and use camera, maps, then battery drains quickly. If t-mobile network is poor where you are( which is a not unusal), battery will drain even quicker.
T version has to many app from stock... Almost 1.5gb of trash stuff.

I semi-bricked my phone and haven't been rooted since bringing it back to life. The only thing I truly miss is AdAway. It's been years since I had to browse the web without an ad blocker and I feel like they've turned up the onslaught ten fold.
Not bad at all.

I wouldn't root either, but I hate ads, ad-away is a must for me. Adguard and all those work when browsing but not in apps. Until then I will stick to 5.0.2 with root. If anyone knows of a alternative for ad blocking like ad-away does, please let me know.
I need root. Few reasons. Debloating, ViperFX and volume button skip mod (whenever we get one)
Also really really hoping official Cyanogenmod makes it to this phone. I miss AOSP with all my heart.

How many % the gpsd task shows in yours? Also is it the G900H?
Mine one lasts for 1 complete day with 4g on most of the time.. Screen time is around 4 to 5 hours
If you're coming here to find a solution then use a program to diagnose the issue like wakelock detector or better battery stats. This post lacks information and does not allow us to help you.
you can try to download wake lock detector or better battery stats from the play store to monitor your battery usage

Your problem might be due to any of these 2 reasons
1 app that uses the network is misbehaving
If this is the case than Uninstalling the misbehaving app.
2 the radio control interface
Sometimes the signal from Tower is not that good in your area so setting the network settings to AUTO mode, the phone keeps switching between GSM, WCDMA AND LTE. try setting your phone to GSM ONLY or WCDMA ONLY. it will most probably solve the issue.
Hahaha. I can't believe to see this post. That's the problem dude. I've 5-6 sot on TW with usage all day long, data all the time. And I got 5 sot on cm. Believe me as heavy user here ?

I think I will go for a LG G3, not even the SGS4 running stock samsung firmware drained the battery this much.

Model: SM-G900H (Sucks not to have the snapdragon)
ROM: KOT49H.G900HXXU1ANG3
Any Recent Changes: No, using the same apps since Nexus 5. I had Nexus 5 then a Note 3 then an S3 mini then a Note then a Nexus 4 then an S4, running the same apps no issue with this.
How often do you use device: I am at work, so I use mostly for whatsapp, and at lunch to check the social networks.
I have great signal from the network, and I always use my phones with everything on except the bluetooth, I have never had this issue. I left the phone one day on stand by, and it only held the battery for 11hours, with 20minutes of on screen use. And the GPSD task was the only one that was using the battery.
What I've done so far:
I turned samsung remote location off
Factory reset
Removed google location services
Disabled all the apps that uses location like twitter or facebook
Turned the GPS off
Root the device and deleted all samsung apps (the ones that can be unisntalled)
Use the GPS on Low battery usage
Disabled the pedometer
Nothing seems to work.
I am not a really Samsung fan, but I was giving a try to the S5 because the water resistant thing, but if my S3 mini can hold up more battery than this device, for me its a crap. More if they make a lot of fun of apple iphone, and the battery life of the S5 is WORST!

Didn't knew we could change to ART in the S5! Already rebooting to ART, I hope this give me at least 14 hours of battery life! :good: Thanks.

Definitely some app misbehaving there. I never switch anything of - sync, wifi, GPS always on. On average 6-7 hours screen time. If doing low cpu tasks like reading a book I have got to 12 hours screen.
Worth doing a root and see what the problem is.

I know it's my decision to do or not .
Honestly , I think it became more a habit than a necessity for most users.
1. First reason
After many years of owning latest smartphones I know very well which application I cannot live without. So after using pathed versions - for a (long) test purpose - just bought them. So - no need to root from this point.
2. Second reason
Stock UI. Been trying many ROM's with good or bad results and realised that there are never ideal custom soft for your mobile. They caused always some kind of trouble. Maybe the reason is I'm getting older and have no time to dig into system, but lately I decided to stick to preinstalled firmware and as the only modification - to change unuseful Galaxy launcher on similar Galaxy one from Play store. So again - no root needed.
And yes - I got my Note4 rooted. There are two reasons I did this:
1. To get a possibility to add any application shortcut to the bar on the right side. I know I can jump between applications by using the task touch button on the left side but I love to use the bar on the right. Much easier for me.
2. To get access to my SD card. From this point root will be always needed I'm afraid.

I've rooted every android phone I have.. The note 3 took me about 8 months of non root use before I rooted to try custom ROMs.. They were great but not essential.
The note 4 running stock no root seems to be rock solid. Produces good enough performance to run anything with ease I chuck at it.. I like root apps. But deem non of them essential in my daily use of my phone. So in my opinion. This phone right now doesn't need root.

Ive been rooting all my phones the xouple of years and tried allmost every rom. Now i have my note 4 since yesterday but i dont feel the need to root it. Its just fast the way it came with touchwiz. And for the first time i dont disturb the touchwiz it just works on this beast.
So in my opinion i shouldnt root it to make it faster.
Only thing is i cant greenify facebook becouse its a stock app. Does somebody know how i can greenify it ??
Yes

It depends on what you are doing with your phone. If you use mobile banking I recommend you DO NOT use root if so use as much protection as you can. With root you basically control anything - change design, control behavior of you device, control it's CPU and GPU, using different ROMs and more.
I've rooted my S4 and with awesome tools on XDA I was able to revert it and with USB jig make it totally unroot without any evidence of change.
It probably will be on Note 4 however Know could be problem.
I use root, I've SuperSU Pro and also I use Eset Antivirus. Mainly I use Xposed and fantastic X-Note ROM. Also what I love about ROOT is backup - simpy in recovery like TWRP.
Anyway it still depends on you what you wanna do with your phone. You can live without it in stock but at least Android 4.4.4. in Note 4 with Stock ROM is pretty junk on RAM.
Just a personal preference. I specifically root all my devices for two main reasons.
1 adware programs
2 hotspot
Those 2 reasons usually are the only 2 for me. The warranty thing i feel like it doesnt matter for me. I use to keep the sprint insurance on my phones and if i had a prob i could just take it and and get a replacement or repair. Sprint hasnt ever told me they wouldnt fool with my phone because it was rooted. I just bring it in with stock software and most of them dont even know what root is. I swap around phones so much now i just dropped the insurance all together because i figured i was paying 130 dollars a year with the rate increase and i wasnt benefiting from it. I hardly ever use any kind of hotspot and sprint makes u pay 20 dollars extra a month. I dont think i use it enough to justify paying that. I can go 6 months easy without using it. Its just those few and far between cases where it comes in handy.
My 2 cents
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
I didn't root my Note 1 or the Sony Z Ultra but I've been looking into rooting the Note 4 due to the phone interface being far too large for the size of the phone screen, the Z Ultra was correctly scaled to suit the larger screen so it made the Note 4 feel very cramped in comparison. I've used the adb trick I found on this forum to adjust the DPI without root which largely works well, it mucks up most of the Samsung applications which is fine as they can be replaced aside from the stock camera application which is meant to get the best out of the camera. The only solution seems to be to root it and set custom application specific dpi's although I'm not finding the misaligned camera screen too much of an issue.

I was lazy about rooting my Note 4 for a while but as soon as I did I realized I should not have waited as long as I did. There is some really solid, stable, streamlined ROMs available right now. The lag on stock is not as noticeable until you've rooted and installed a custom ROM. Now I can truly say the 4 is a beast.
touchwiz has no lag on stock. turn off window transition animator in dev options in stock settings and your lag will disappear.

I think that's what most knowledgeable people do when setting up a new TW phone. The LOL is because that doesn't eliminate the lag that is there. There is so much discussion about this all over, I don't really want to start it all over again here.
Hey guys, G-925A user here. Can anyone please tell me if I'm the only one experiencing slowness, freezing and overall glitchiness on my s6 edge?
I mean this thing has 3gb of ram right? It should breeze through multitasking, but it just crawls. My g2 and g3 were waaay faster and never froze up as much as this thing does.
Is it touchwiz? Att bloatware? I'm rooted and using titanium backup to freeze as much bloatware as I could find. But it still doesn't work as well or as fast as I believe a phone with these specs should.
Looking for ideas from the community here, should I try cleanrom? Has anyone experienced similar issues and fixed with custom rom?
Thanks in advance guys!!

I have the same phone on ATT. I don't have any freezing or reboots, but after about 2 days without restarting, it gets super slow.
I have used several debloated roms and they help a lot. The S6 partial memory fix helps a little bit, but the phone slows down more in the long term (restarts always help helps).
same experience here. memory fix only lasts so long. phone comes down to a crawl so badly that sometimes i think the phone completely locked up. happens during texting, using FB...pretty much everything. it's starting to get annoying. i love this phone but this is horrible.
Same here. So frustrating. Happened to me the other day that I needed driving directions. My wife pulled out her iphone 5s and asked siri. She had turn by turn before I could even load the gmaps screen. She laughed at me. It hurt. =(
Do a factory reset - it worked WONDERS for me, ever since, my Edge has been super smooth. It's painful, I know, but the thing was so laggy for me I wanted to chuck it hard against a brick wall. Now it's back to what it originally promised! I suspect doing it every 3-4 months is probably going to be a requirements for power users...

Unfortunately that is the norm. Hopefully AT&T will get around to releasing 5.1.1 since the latest update (on T-Mobile, for example) seems to address most of the issues we see like the lag, and battery drain.
Although some of the blame is due to Android 5.0.x, it is primarily Samsung since I have other phones still on 5.0.x (ASUS ZenFone 2, HTC One M9) that do not suffer from the lag.
AT&T bloatware
I think this is due to the mandatory AT&T updates that are pushed on to our devices, because there is a noticeable decrease in performance after OTA updates from AT&T:crying:
Seems like I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. It's sad that this device performs so badly.
I think I'd like to unroot it and actually install the OTA updates, just to see if it works faster. Does anyone know a simple guide to unrooting?
The funny part is that benchmarks still show high scores.

thought i would add something here. I have since sold my 925a and bought a 920t to have ability to use twrp and unlocked bootloader. (insert big middle finger to at&t here). i have installed xtrestolite and have to say the phone runs so much fast than my edge on att with frozen bloatware ever did. no real freezing during multi-tasking, camera still opens quite quick. I mean so much of an improvement, so I would have to say it's got do do with att/carrier software that ruin the customer experience for us. good luck to you all out there. now the wait for xposed begins...
I went the other way. I had a 920t and gave it to my Dad. Picked up a 925a for myself. I'd do anything to have the speed of my original s6 back. I love the edge, but geez does this thing lag.
I gave in and flashed the original os. The device runs significantly better. It seems the themes from Samsung slowed down my phone and caused a lot of issues with the dialer app.

You probably froze/disabled an app you shouldn't have. The system is stalling because of this.
I am a VZW user by necessity (coverage) and I like the specs of the Note 5 (Processor, RAM, and S-Pen). Knowing that Root access is not possible (at least for now) on VZW and ATT, I am trying to determine what is possible with the Note 5 on these carriers.
Without root access is it possible to get rid of "Bloatware" on the Note 5?
Can Bloatware (or any apps youu don't want) be "disabled" from running if they cannot be removed? Or does this also require Root access?
Thank you in advance.
Yes.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563
With that app, it is not free but well worth the 2 bucks, I have all the vzw/samsung crap and more disabled on my device and loving the batterylife/speed.

With that app, it is not free but well worth the 2 bucks, I have all the vzw/samsung crap and more disabled on my device and loving the batterylife/speed.

Thanks so much for the reply and the link!
Does this app work with phones that cannot obtain root like Verizon and ATT Note 5's? I would gladly pay for an app that would do this.
Yes

How much of a performance gain to you gain after using the app? Is it noticeable? Do you know if that apps are actually prevented from starting up or are the icons just hidden from the launcher?

Yes, they are disabled completely it seems, no longer on the application list or anything. As for the gain, I'm not sure it's really that measurable the phone is already so fast, mostly I see improved battery life.
Note 5
I don't find the performance noticeably different before and after debloating.
Battery is (a little, not a lot) better, but performance seems the same to me.
My antutu scores went from 67,000 to 69,000 after debloating. Not earth shattering. I'm very sensitive to lag and stutters and seems slightly faster to me. But I'm still surprised at how fast the phone is with all the bloat!

Here's where you notice the difference.

Doe you notice RAM management issues?
Have any of you experienced the aggressive RAM management issues some are reporting? Where any more than four or five apps in the background result in apps being closed out when new applications are started? Some people say it is very frustrating while others don't see any signs of it. The problem can be solved with the edit of a "prop" file but root is required and VZW version cannot get root.
Downloading software now. Updates coming up in a bit
Ram usage went from 86% to 75%

always nice to get an update. about to install, need to quick charge first. I had wifi-calling on all night, hence my battery was at 1% when i woke up. which brings me to my next point: i hope this update fixes the cell-standby bug. I don't think I'll use video calling much if it means my battery life tanks due to enabled VoLTE. It's been reported, on other S6 variants that got this "latest TW" update, that RAM management is better, so i'm looking forward to that possibility. hopefully the experts here will check out all the minute code details regarding RAM and let us know if RAM management is the same or not.

Just curious, why do you use clean master instead of smart manager? Aren't they the same thing?

I honestly don't know. I often wonder if these apps actually work as advertised.

Also T-Mobile Advanced messaging through the stock app
My battery life seems to be a bit better with this update.
I just plugged phone into smartswitch and saw the update. 50% through right now. Wonder what's up with it, and hopefully battery life is a little better. I'm pretty sure being an avid user as I am, and the apps that I run don't help.... But, my s4 got better battery then this phone does =/ I'm also probably going to have to get a replacement, because my camera is all wonky, and making weird noises.. All in all, I'm fairly disappointed with the way Samsung rolled this phone out. I'm trying to stick with Samsung, but they are making it very hard.
anywhere to get the file? i'm rooted so no ota update for me...
Memory management still sucks balls. Everything else in the update is legit though. Seems like there is more bloat than ever.
Got Wifi issue! It won't connect or either too slow, though wifi signal is good.

Yeah DHA values remain the same. More bloat as well. So far no cell standby drain while on VOLTE though.
I have yet to check the WiFi cell standby battery drain
