I was talking to one of my buddies here at work who is also an Android Freak like myself and we were discussing about how Google and LG can sell such a device packing what it does for $299 or $349.
It's seems like it has really beautiful build quality also, while Samsung sells a plastic dual core S3 with half the RAM, lower resolution screen for double the price!
Don't get me wrong, I am both happy and sad that the phone is so damn cheap. Glad because it is so dirt cheap that I can buy it as a backup phone to my Note 2 and just not worry about it falling and breaking or whatever. Replacing just the LCD on my Note 2 would probably pay for the whole Nexus 4!
Sad because since it is so cheap, it almost gives me the impression that it's some kind of gophone, pay as you go device. You know, a disposable phone. Something any 13 year old who mows lawns on the weekends can afford. Also judging by the comments and anticipation in this forum, those are most likely the majority of buyers. 13 year old geeks. =)
To me the device lost something special, exclusivity.
When I first picked up my Note 2, everybody at work was in awe and were ready to go purchase one immediately.
Then I told them how much I paid, $690 off contract and they all had sticker shock. Only one other fella at my work has a Note 2 besides me now, and that's my boss. The device feels special to me.
I know this post seems a bit ridiculous, but that's something that is bugging me a little about the device. What do you guys think? A little something inside kinda wish Google priced this device similar to the Galaxy Nexus. I think it would have been more special to me. Am I crazy?

Just because people are excited, you're assuming they're 13? Right...
... and imo, the price does not make it any less exclusive.
You could always buy two and strap them back-to-back for that "cachet" feel?
In any case, mainstream smartphones, like all technology, will always be getting less exclusive. If exclusivity is of import, the Tag Heuer Android phones look quite sharp, but probably will be behind on the OS curve...
Setting aside the ridiculousness of caring about exclusivity, your work colleagues likely got sticker-shock because they don't know much about the cellphone market. I'm sure they don't think of the iPhone as an "exclusive" device, and yet it's in the same range as the Note 2 off-contract. The Nexus 4 may not be a monetarily exclusive device, but it's still going to have limited sales due to the number of people who are informed enough about their options to pick one up.

Front-to-front. The back's the best-looking part, after all; and the part that displays the ever-important logos.
You should realize that there are people outside of XDA who don't even know that this phone exists.
You say less exclusive... I say more support.
How many people actually know what a Nexus phone even is? I don't know anyone who does. They don't really advertise and come to think of it, I've never seen anyone with a Nexus (any of them).
No, it makes it lighter on my wallet. I don't care how many other people have it as long as I do.

[13 yr old comment]If you want to feel special, maybe get it from the TMo store or import it. [/13 yr old comment]
The price is being subsidized. Just making it easier to reach more people. This way el goog can make even more money with mobile ad revenue.

Which is why we shouldn't worry about the phone being out of stock. Hopefully the stock outweighs the demand.
If having exclusivity means paying $1000 dollars, I'll take a less exclusive phone any day for $350
You think $500+ phones are exclusive? You'll find more Note 2s and iPhones than N4.
That said, the more the N4s out there, the more accessories there will be for it. And thats always a good thing.

Perhaps. Google may keep production low for the first wave after watching previous launches. There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about the popularity of this phone due to the lack of LTE, expandable storage, and maybe inadequate battery. Those of us looking to buy the phone can only hope that it is either not that popular or that Google didn't lower production.

You know what I got from reading this? That you need to feel special/better than your friends. That's no reason to jack up the price of a phone.
Tell you what, I'll buy mine, then sell it to you for $859.99, that'll really blow your colleagues out of the water! Or how about avoiding the faux pas of bragging about how much money you spent on a cell phone. Hell, if anything I'll be showing my friends this phone and telling them how cheap it was. Look at this thing, it's awesome, and cost half the price of your NoteII!

I don't see anything wrong of a 13 year old can save up and purchase this device, it allows a younger audience to own a modern smartphone without the hefty price tag. Exclusivity to one type of group (in this case being age) isn't somthing company's want for their products, and if they lure in the younger users with the low price tag, that means more marketshare for them. The nexus 4 isn't a fashion item like more popular phones such as the iPhone, or even the galaxy s3, it's made for contract free or value plan customers who want a fast phone for a reasonable price.
Lol I think this thread should be closed. =/
Who cares? Does it matter if the phone is not as "exclusive" as you would like?
It's an amazing phone at a great price, it will further push the Android ecosystem.
If you want exclusive, stick with foreign imports of obscure devices.

XD I just did few minutes ago.
I pre-ordered an 8.4 and it's due to ship September 23. I've been salivating over the Tab S ever since the WiFi models dropped a couple of months ago. Just a few more days and the wait is finally over!
I just pre ordered after playing with the tab s 8.4 at bestbuy... Excited!!!
I don't understand "Pre-ordering"
So let me get this straight. Manufacturers want us to pay now for something they are not even selling yet. They want to take our money now but not actually give us anything for it until later. All for the "privilege" of owning it a few days before other people. Does that about sum it up?
I fully understand why the manufacturers like this arrangement. Get the money now and deliver later makes great sense for them. To me though, it makes absolutely no sense for the consumer.
Every time I watch the iSheep line up outside an Apple Store I think: "So what? Are they going to run out? Actually they might if you feel you must have one the first day (though I fail to see the practical advantage of that - they will keep making them after all). If I wait until next week will I not be able to buy one (hint: Yes I will be able to buy one next week)? Will they say, no you did not pre-order or stand in line all night so you don't get one?" I sort of doubt that will happen. They will still want my money next week. In fact, wait a little longer (for anything that's not an "i" product) and the price will actually go down.

If you continually wait for a lower price or the new device that's just around the corner, you'll never own anything. I pre-ordered because I could. I've been waiting for an LTE Galaxy Tab S ever since the WiFi models launched 3 months ago. I pre-ordered so that I can save myself the 20 minute drive to my closest AT&T corporate store and instead have my tablet shipped to my house and have it a couple of days early. There is no premium to be paid for pre-ordering. Sure, you're giving them money before you get the device, but there's no risk there. You'll get your device.

Or you could just get it from Amazon with (typically) free two day shipping. No 20 minute drive required and (also typically) notably cheaper than getting the device elsewhere. For example, a Verizon Galaxy s5 phone is currently $199 with contract direct from Verizon but $79.99 on Amazon.

You can't buy the AT&T version on Amazon right now, nor will you until some 3rd party seller decides to sell them. Sometimes they're cheaper, sometimes they aren't. There are sellers on Amazon selling the international LTE models, but those are useless to me because they don't work with US LTE bands. What works for you works for you. Pre-ordering works for me. All good.
Also, your example of the VZW Galaxy S5 is pointless in my situation because I don't buy devices on contract. Amazon doesn't compete on full retail price.

They actually don't get the money until the item ships just like any other purchase. You're only reserving a device or place in line if you will. I have to admit thou I enjoy the "privilege" of owning a few days early as most on this site do.

So, do you have it in hand yet? How bad is the ATT bloat? Samsung bloat is bad enough (I have a Note 10 with a load disabled), but the tablets are nice. I'm waiting on the Nexus 9 for comparison, but interested in an ~8" tab by the end of the year.

Anyone receive their AT&T model yet? Does it have the Snapdragon or Exynos processor?
Mine is due Saturday (tomorrow). Will report back once I get it. I was able to verify that the Sprint Tab S 10.5 has a Snapdragon, though.
It seems like only Sprint/Verizon got the Snapdragon. AT&T lists the Exynos Octa on their website.
Damn.
Got mine yesterday. Can't wait for it to be rooted. It is a quadcore. Not the octocore.
EDIT: I was wrong it is Octo

well...the POSSIBLE good news is that the current root method SHOULD still work with the gsm version as well as my SuperSamsung rom. So which ever one of u brave souls will be bold enough to test that please report back with your results....i'm assuming that the phone is disabled which means no calls on the ATT tab as it always is with every other samsung device? If so then i have created a modem thread which MAY help us out with that so once again whoever attempts to root would also need to flash that (link below)....if either of u guys locate an odin package for the ATT version (sprint/verizon too but for other purposes) then PLEASE provide me a link oh and if ANYONE figued out how to get this tablet to flash with heimdall a lil help would DEFINITELY be appreciated. Hopefully we wont run into locked bootloaders on the SM-T707A (could one of u please confirm if this is the correct/exact model number)...if i find out that flashing the brazillian radio will in fact enable voice with LTE bands then i will throw my T705 in the bushes in a heartbeat

^USA LTE & TALK THREAD
I don't think that CDMA has anything to do with it. I think it's more a question of size. The 10.5" LTE Tab S has a Snapdragon while the 8.4" LTE Tab S retains the Exynos. Why? I have no clue. An easy way to see if I'm right would be to see what T-Mobile's 10.5 has when it launches. If it too has a Snapdragon, then I think it's safe to say it's based on size.
So, I upgraded to a Sprint LGG4 on Aug 1st, 2015...1.5 months ago. I'm starting to not like the phone due to spit screen issues and tons of bad press about the issues on the internet. I really wish I would have picked the Galaxy Note 5! Now it looks like my options to exchange are limited to "Pay Big Bucks!" and get a Note 5! I don't want to have to sell the farm to exchange. I am stuck in a 2 year lease agreement with Sprint. So what do you guys think? Try the G4 replacement process with my Sprint TEP or pay the piper and upgrade to Note 5?
You are stuck in the lease right? You can't even pay off the lease from what understand. Why not just use your TEP, that's why you have it, right?
sadly, you cant swap a device with sprint based on "bad press".
if your device is exhibiting the known issue bugs, then sure, you can get swapped into another G4.

cool. most of the issues seem to be hardware based. hopefully that is something LG will fix in future builds of device. that being said, if its not selling a lot, they may just play the wait and see if it fails game.
i am disappointed in the lack of support for both HTC and LG in the sprint forums, but then again, sprint hasn't been stellar with their service for a while now and i think the forums are showing that. even the once crazy samsung forums seem to be a bit vacant.

Yeah, Sprint is "low over head" but they hold their own. Service is decent in my area and I don't have to mortgage my first born for a good plan! I just wish all carriers would loosen the reigns a little and let these powerful phones 'breathe!' Also, 14 days isn't long enough to see if a phone is right for me...and now they don't care if I am unhappy because they have me trapped for 23 more months! LOL! When companies finally realize that treating a customer like a king is better business, this will be a great world!

People are WAY too caught up with being LOCKED in for 24 months.
I just swapped M9 to G4. It will cost me about $100.00-$150.00 to switch. Buy on Ebay and Sell on Ebay (or swappa).
If you want to change carriers. Many will pay early termination.
The only thing you are losing is the discount you got on the phone. Which you can resell.
You could say switch to a T-Mobile S6 probably for $99.00, T-Mobile pays termination and sell your G4 for $350.00. You'd be ahead of the game.
So nobody is handcuffed to anything.
I do agree 14 days is too short. I think if you buy through Amazon you might get 30 days.
I did indeed! Seemed like a good idea at the time! I wanted a low monthly price...they offered loyalty discount so I pay like $8 per month compared to the $30 per month for the Note 5...I don't really need an old phone after 2 years so returning the phone after 2 years was no problem either. I'm ok with the lease, just wish it was a little more flexible!
I was pretty impressed with the release notes yesterday. Ive been nothing but happy with my N6 (got it new since it came out), but ive got the new phone itch lol.
Also since im on Project Fi, they were offering the VR gear for free (most likely would not have bought it on my own, just my personal opinion). So ive got my order in for an XL. We shall see how that goes.
imo I think it is really pricy. Cant justify myself spending so much for a pixel. beside that I think my n6 and n5 is still usable at least till the next pixel release.
No Pixel for me. Not going to pay that kind of money for a phone. I got my N6 just a year ago and it is still working perfect. If i buy a new phone then I will spent no more then 400 euro on it.

I agree, I was a bit surprised at the pricing.
Although, the days of renewing your contract and getting a $200 smart phone are gone. I think every phone company (around me anyways - ATT, VZ, Sprint, Tmobile, ect) are all charging full retail for phones now ($650+)
Its not as bad of a hit having it over 24 month payments and them not charging interest on it.
I'm getting it. Most of the people on here too are. No matter what they say. They will be craving it by xmas.
I preordered a 128GB Pixel XL for $921 to get the free VR headset deal, but I decided to cancel my order a few hours later. I'll wait for some reviews and root confirmation before I drop that kind of dough on something I'll be bored with in a year or less. Hopefully there will be a black Friday sale next month or some holiday deals at the end of the year.
The Pixel looks like a really really nice phone, but being a full time student with no job puts a big crunch on my budget for toys.

Hmm did not know that.
I had them for 10+ years but got tired of paying soooo much for my bill (grandfathered unlim data). When Project Fi was announced, I hopped on. Kept both VZ and Fi for 2-3 months to compared reception in the areas I spent most my time. Fi held up just fine and is LESS THAN HALF of what I was paying big red (just dont get unlim data).
Wonder if they will keep that trend going.

I was tempted to switch to Fi before, but I always had the idea in the back of my mind that someday I might grow tired of Nexus or the new iteration won't be as good (Pixel).
Anyways, if you still have a line on VZW, you can check it out, otherwise you can try to woo a representative into giving you the contract deal
I have no idea what makes anyone believe most people on here will buy the pixel. Literally 95% of the posters have an extremely negative opinion of the device on the threads out there. I would rather buy an iphone than a pixel at those prices. Too many other decent options to consider.

My N6 is way better than that overpriced phones. So no thank you. I'll wait few more months until prices go down and buy an op3 or even a axon 7. Or go adventurous and buy Umi plus. Which is easy sexier looking phone!
So N6 was my last Google phone ever.

The N6 was equally ridiculously overpriced in 2014, so I laughed at the idea of buying it. Besides my Note 3 was only one year old, just reached the age I cared less if the knox flag is 0x1 or not. Also a SD805 upgrade over a SD800 is not an upgrade. And the Note 3 had a better camera.
And a year later I changed my mind.

£400/$500, yes. Current prices, absolutely not. Where do you get "Most of the people on here too are" from? Based on the number of people who say "Wow, that's a very reasonable price" or what?

The price is high, but the constituency here are tech heads. People will groan and grumble, but eventually get it. Provided their is good community support.
When a phone like our N6 starts to lose community support for being old, it's not very gratifying to own.
The only thing that would possibly stop me, if the bootloader was locked down tight with no option to root.
UPDATE: Ok, I did check the price. Pixel XL with 128g is probably about 900+ with tax delivered. Yea, that might push me out.
Anyone else peeved about this? Our reward for pre-ordering...paying $150 more than people who just waited.
Agreed
I vaguely remember samsung did this once a few years back, to many customer's backlash. The phone hasn't even been out a month and they are discounting it almost 25%. That's somewhat a slap in the face to us faithful LG owners. I've owned every g series phone since optimus G, so I know what i'm getting into in terms of residual value, but this is a bit beyond good practice.
This really sucks I just say yesterday where it said $500.00 and free google home. I'm not going to pre-order again I'll just wait and maybe I'll buy something else because $150.00 is a really big difference.
yes,,to quick...call and voice your displeasure even it they cant do anything...it lowers consumer confidence....i mean why would any ever preorder or buy within the first couple of day again.
I decided to talk to T-Mobile about this situation and all I got was sorry but I can't help you Lg prices always come down quickly and I stated not a month later maybe a year. Not worth discussing with them I even told them maybe I need to find another carrier where I can get better deal. All I got out of that is I understand don't want to loose you but it is up to you. No way that I like the answers I got so if I do stay with T-Mobile I will never pre-order another phone from them.
Thats happened to me a few times actually on a few different devices.
I was never upset about it though because i got all the devices launch day and didnt have to wait a month.
$150 is worth getting my hands on day one to me...no problem with it at all.think of it as a premium for getting things first lol.
Now adding in extra giveaways is a different story, people shouldnt be getting extras when they already got a discount on the device.

Annoyed, yes. But... It's the price you pay for early adopters. There should be exclusive benefits to pre-ordering because otherwise I agree, why pre-order?

This is not a carrier thing. Tmobile is not to blame for the price drop.
Your right it is not a carrier thing but I have bought things in stores and within a certain period of time they dropped the price and I went back when I saw it and the store gave me the difference in cash so it can be done. Also I have gotten credits from carriers Also stores do price matches of different stores so there is a way to do this. I can't do anything about it as I stated before and will stick by it I will not pre-order again which is my choice anyone else can do what ever they want to.
Myself and others got the $150 back. I had to return and repurchase a G6 to get the price while others have received $150 bill credit. Call and speak to retentions until you get someone to credit the $150.

No tmobile does price matches, they would work with you and rare instances kowtow if the customer was having a baby fit
Picked one up yesterday. Had a G6 side by side with the S8 and S8+. Had the bucks to buy either, but just couldn't see the extra value in the S8+ that would make it a must have thing. I'm not much into the curvy sides. Hope you all get the 150 back.
Cheers,

Just to let you know I don't do baby fits. I am a senior citizen who doesn't like losing money.

You are always going to lose money on a phone, they lose value quickly. You blaming tmobile was wrong, they don't do price matches but because they value customers they will do things out of norm to help you
I really wish you would read my posts I didn't blame t-mobile for this situation SovPanda and I know about loosing money everything you buy depreciates quickly. You keep insulting me about what you think I'm saying please read my posts instead of jumping to conclusions. If you read some of the posts you will others have gotten bill credits of $150.00 and that is what I'm trying to do too.

I'm an old coot too, fixin' to turn 64... If you're within the 14 day return period, just go tell them what you want. They'll do it. Guys like you and me walk and and say "here's what it is and let's get this done" and it usually happens, especially if you're within reason, and you are. I'm sure SovPanda is just trying to be helpful, really. Things change, how folk address one another, what he said would just roll off an X'ers or Millennials back like "cool, I get it".
Walking in when a promo runs 6 months later and trying the same thing probably wouldn't fly. Or it might, who knows.
I just lucked out that the price dropped the day I considered it- and boy, am I glad I didn't get the S8+. $350 more for gimmicks that really have no impact in real life, in my view.
Cheers!

Whining and complaining because you didn't get what you think you deserve while demanding someone else give it to you? That sounds nothing like a millennial...
If you were willing to pay its original price, and were happy with it, are you suddenly no longer happy with it now that it's $150 cheaper?
I get it, paying one price and finding out it's cheaper and day later or what not sucks. I certainly would like the extra $150. Next time I can wait, attempt to anticipate when something is going to drop and hopefully that'll work out. If not, such is life. Certainly don't feel screwed over as I'm happy with the device.
Still amazes me how much cell phones cost though. Computers and technology usually get cheaper, but it seems phones just get more and more expensive. Crazy.

Naw, I didn't intend a slight to a millennials or xers or anyone else; I was just noting that certain ways of addressing issues, turns of phrasing, etc., are cross-generationally different, the way they play out in our heads. Actually, we mostly have a common understanding.
It's a communication thing when what you say isn't always what they hear- and vice versa. Never did think of millennials as whiners, etc. It's just easy to misinterpret each other, I think- and, btw, I didn't take any offense
Cheers,
StevenRN
PS: Yep, you'd think things would get cheaper. Sometimes they do for a bit, but generally speaking, things always go up. Way of the world.
Wow I can't believe that this got so out of hand. I'm glad I don't have to deal with this on a daily basis because there is way to many differences between generations.
