I've been hearing that the One has issues similar to its predecessor, as far as browser multitasking. Has anyone had issues with the browser constantly refreshing when you leave, go to another app, and come back to it?
No such problem with my HTC One. Multitasked between apps and browser, different tabs stayed put(no auto-refreshing).

What kind of websites does it happen with and how often? It worries me how there's no definitive reason why some people have this problem. It seems to be random.

It does it a LOT on a dating site that I use, OKCupid (when accessing the desktop version of the site). I think it may possibly be related to the number of tabs one has open, as well. But certainly it's very annoying. I sometimes do a bit of browsing on London Underground trains. (You get about 20 seconds of wifi when the train is in a station!) What I'd like to be able to do is load up multiple pages in different tabs (each one opened as a new background tab) while the connection is up and then read them in the tunnels between stations; but it insists on refreshing each tab as you go back to it, and, as there's no connection in the tunnel, you can't actually read the page, even though it's fully downloaded and should be cached.
It does it pretty frequently. More with stock browser than with chrome though.

But that doesn't happen on my Chrome on my Note II... ever! Even if I press a link by mistake I can press back and it will be stored in cache, this is probably an HTC problem then, anyone else having this issue?
Nope. Not a problem for me. Always going back and forth on my browser. No issue there

I agree. I can't remember if it's because I swipe it away with the recent apps button.
But sometimes the browser panics on me and closes on it's own.

This was NEVER an issue specific to HTC or its software. The sooner people stop spreading the FUD the better.
The only reason Android will force the browser to clear its cache of a page is because it needs to. That is, it's running low on RAM due to other services/apps and needs more. Your browser is not considered a high-level process in the priority list (it's not a service, unlike many other apps), so it'll get hit more often than other apps.
So, the reason this crops up for some people more than others is simply due to what they have running in the background (services, such as Facebook, Trillian, GMail, etc etc). The more crap you run at the same time, the more likely it's going to run out of RAM. This is how it works for ANY Android phone going all the way back to the 2.0 days. It's ALSO how it works on iOS, BlackBerry 10, and webOS (except those platforms don't use a priority system). Also keep in mind that websites these days actually take up a significant amount of RAM, especially ones with heavy amounts of Javascript and retina-level graphics.
The HTC One has 2GB of RAM, which means you have quite a bit of RAM to work with before this happens, but how often it happens is always going to be determined by how you use it.

Thats false, it was an issue on the HTC One X, and thats why I went for the GS3 instead of the One X (that and battery life), and it was done on purpose by HTC, not sure if they "fixed" it or not since then.

A preference that had no influence apparently, since all it takes is a person with a task manager to confirm what I said was true.
This happens on my Nexus 4. Nothing new to see.

This is also BS. The evo lte I had always dumped the browser and this phone does it as well, even just going back and forth from the browser to the music app. The galaxy i switched to did not exhibit the same behavior. In fact, that thing would often keep the browser in memory till the NEXT DAY. This phone with 2gb ram (and 700 plus free) will dump my browser pages for nothing but time it seems

See, that's what's retarded to me. I too have also ran a heavy game and came back to the browser and my pages were still there. But let me play some music and come back a few minutes later and it's highly likely that it's been terminated

Chrome doesn't have any scrolling lag for me on the One.
Hi,
I've had some really bad experience with the HTC One and Android overall in the last few years.
Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S, then going through the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3, and now HTC One, I've got one thing that really annoys me. The stutter/lag in every single third party apps. I tried doing many things, like enabling 'force gpu rendering', and changing roms, but I could never get rid of that 'lag'. Many people don't see it as a problem, but it is really annoying for me as an iPhone user, where my 4S is extremely fluid and stutter free compared to the One. Now, some people have told me that going from an iPhone to Android will mean that things like this will be apparent for me instantly, and they will annoy me. But I can't believe that this is the case with all Android phones, I mean after all they all cost just as much as iPhone does, so they should work just as well?
I really like android as an operating system, iOS is too closed. So I'd rather not go back to the iPhone for that, but the lag and bad animations bother me so much that I am actually considering returning the One.
So my question is - is there anything I can do to get rid of the stutter/lag ?

Yes Android Does have bug and lag but its getting a lot better compare to 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 4.0 4.1 4.2 each update has improved whole OS bit better, but still needs more time to mature but same time İOS or Windows Phone is very limited so i assume more thing to do means more codes and more codes mean more fault. İ have HTC One and İphone 5 but HTC One feels faster than İphone 5 in my eyes but another fact is Android needs more power so maybe next chipsets like S800 or Tegra 4 may make transaction more smoother. Android is not best idea on budget smartphone cos as i said needs more power.
There are a lot of rumours that Android Key Lime Pime will be more smoother and less power hungry need to wait and see but enjoy whole experience of android its free and open its getting better every day
sorry for bad spell etc
As a past user of an iPhone 4s and current user of a HTC one, lag is way more prevalent in the 4s.Examples 1.Open the app store. 2. Switch between apps a couple times. 3. Swipe to the search screen. The one never lags for me. Ever. I'm a pretty intensive user with lots of apps running at once. Not to mention the speed at which the one works compared to the iPhone. It still has awesome animations but does them faster. Seriously you must have some rogue app going crazy in the background or something.

I have the same feeling.
I've owned over 10 android devices and an iPhone 4 and 5, and when I'm on an iPhone I hate that I'm not able to do anything... and while when I'm on an Android phone I LOATHE the constant stutter/lag/inconcistancy.
You can't have your cake and eat it too... I guess.
EDIT: To answer your quesion: no, you can't.
EDIT2: just thought of WebOS, smooth, whith it's modding repositories *starts wheeping*

hold an iPhone and an android phone side by side, the difference will be noticeble to everyone.
I think the OP is referring to apps that haven't yet been optimized for the 1920x1080 screen of the One and the S4. Animations such as those in Words with Friends look jerky in comparison with the iOS counterpart. It may be something you'll need to learn to live with. With Android phones of all different sizes out there, you're never going to get 100% app compatibility.

Like I said I can' t see any stutter or lag, not in the default apps or sense at least
Well that is what my iFriends say - it stutters!!!!1 How can you not see that???? And yes, sometimes I do see it, and it is annoying.
Some of us are more sensitive, some don't even notice. Most of the time I think it is because of loading content while scrolling. If you open a web page, or any internet dependent app, it will pull new content when you scroll to the end, an then inevitably some time is spent on arranging layout, loading jpegs and so on. iOS does it in advance, and is even making some kind of thumbnails all over system to smooth that out.
Could be wrong, but that is my conclusion so far.

like I said you need to give some specific examples of lag or stutter because I can't see it, not in sense nor in the stock apps. I can see lag and stutter for example in chrome (and new opera) but stock (and opera classic) are smooth, app drawer buttery smooth, settings buttery smooth, whatsapp smooth, blinkfeed smooth
Well I don't know now, really. Trying to forget about it, but name of this thread reminded me again
As I said - internet apps, not in system. Facebook, Engadget, Instagram, Cracked app... almost all third party web apps, not really important ones. It is app design flaw of some kind, you cant see that in system or system apps which are better made. On the bright side, this effect was horrible on LG O2x, which could just confirm my theory - One can load and arrange on-the-fly required data quicker.
It's not hard to understand that this effect is really not what anyone who bought the best Android device at the moment wants to see, no matter who's fault it is. Maybe that is the price we pay for system openness, and if that is the case - not a problem at all.

oh I don' t use any of those apps, mostly the stock ones and google apps and these are all buttery smooth (with the exception of chrome and sometime the play store).
I think these laggy apps all use webkit to draw their UI, webkit will lag the UI when loading, even on a powerful desktop. One of the chrome devs congrateluted opera, when the switched to webkit how fluid they had made opera when presto was still loading, something which they hadn't figured out to do yet
what version of android do you have? i noticed stuttering in third party apps on 4.1.2, but was fixed in 4.2.2
i use tubemate, and it was unusable on 4.1.2, now it works perfectly

I'm currently on stock 4.1.2 from HTC, the European version for the HTC_001. I've also tried the Android Revolution HD 4.2.2, but the problem still persisted. It was better, but still not 'buttery smooth'.
As to when it happens - Sense is largely ok, when swiping through the screens you can't really see any lag. Unless going between the app launcher and the blinkfeed.
But it's mostly other apps, such as even the stock web browser, thet just stutter and lag when on some simple webpages, such as google, full amazon website, my banks, lloyds tsb, and pretty much every single web page is just slow and stutters when scrolling. Not to mention XDA-Developers, because this website is just on another level of stutter. lol
I've tried firefox, chrome, stock browser, and all of them have the same problem.
There are also apps, facebook, even the keyboard lags!
Now, I don't know about you, but I think it's the resolution that causes the problem. I'd rather have lower resolution with say, 300 ppi, which is not really noticeably worse than that of the One, and at the same time have an OS that does not suffer from these problems.
Because in all honesty, the ONE is actually more stuttery than SGS 1 was.. Now, that just can't be right!
I'm still hoping that somebody will come up with something that can fix it.
Because I'm really sensitive about this stuff myself, and love the idea of android at the same time. Not to mention the hardware of ONE.
But when using the phone, it immediately feels cheap and badly made when simple things like that occur on a phone costing as much as a 15 year old car!
So I think it'll be back to the iPhone for now. My contract on it ends in a year, so let's hope Google does some magic with Android, and maybe forces manufacturers to release properly optimized software. But I fear that's just wishful thinking.

You have an interesting way of exaggerating prices. I bought mine from Hong Kong, so maybe mine cost as much as a 14 year old car. Or perhaps a 15 year old car in good condition? Or maybe just within the range of usual Flagship phone prices?
If you're getting stuttering with certain apps, don't use them. Poorly made apps usually have alternatives.
So far, the only big app I'm getting stuttering with is the Chrome/Chrome Beta app. It would be nice if it wasn't there but, thanks to features like data compression saving me roughly 50% on data use, I can look past it. I also get it with the facebook app, but that is such a **** app.
There are probably some other apps I get it with but, to be completely honest, lag and stuttering hasn't been noticeable in my daily use. This phone is fast as hell... Faster even than a 15 year old car. What a deal!

What I was trying to say, that these phones cost extremely high amounts of money, and yet don't work properly.
I mean, having used Lumia 520 a few weeks ago for a few days, I can safely say that I would recommend that over the One, simply on the 'niceness of use'. And that phone costs £100 in the UK.. One costs over £450 at the cheapest.
As to the apps - I get that, but if you read my post, you'd know that I mentioned all of the popular apps, I try to stay away from the lesser known developers, as they tend not to do so much testing on their apps, and thus providing a terrible experience most of the time (not so much on iOS, as Apple does a lot of testing before they put the app up on the market, something that would be nice to have on android too).

some sites lag in some browsers some sites in all, some sites even lag on my powerful core i5 laptop running windows 8, sometimes it' s bug in the browser, sometimes a bug in the website. I'll bet you you will come across laggy sites on the iphone too. XDA is buttery smooth for me though (at least the forum, which I always watch in compact view and I hated the contextual search so I disabled that in forum preferences)
Honestly I've used android from the start back when the g1 was released. Going from that to the g2 now the HTC one. Even on my g2 on some Roms I barley had lag issues now on the one I don't see any stutter or lag or slow downs.. But I guess that's just me.

I guess we can both be happy that are devices aren't as bad as the OP
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I don't think it's a problem with my particular device though.
I've watched many reviews online, and the very same things that happened on my device were happening on those being reviewed.
Things like:
When browsing google images, you open one image and then swipe to look at the next one, htc one starts to render an animation and then 1/4th of the way just stutters to the picture. On the iPhone it's just a nice, fluid animation.
Another, the original keyboard is rather bad, you press a key, and the pop up with letter comes on, you depress the key and the preview is still there for at least half a second.
Also, a more general one - when you install something from the play store and try to browse for another app on it at the same time - it stutters beyond belief.
And sense one - where are the animations when closing an app/window? I feel like using windows Vista on a 2005 pc with 1gb ram..
It's very small things, but they do not happen on the iPhone, and I just feel like the experience is more pleasurable and consistent on iOS. Not to mention WP, which is even faster than iOS in my opinion.
The iPhone and WP may not be faster hardware wise, or performance wise even, but the animation, and transitions between doing things are just incredibly badly implemented on Android.
I'd rather see it being done like on the iPhone - when the phone is installing or doing something in the background, that action stops when you try and use the phone. That way, it may perform worse, and install the app slower, but the experience is really good, and no stutter occurs. Whereas android sort of tries to do everything at the same time.
But again, that may be just me being very bothered about things like this, most people don't see it as a problem, but it annoys the hell out of me, hence this thread. I was hoping that there is some tweak for the One that makes the experience more pleasurable whilst maybe decreasing the performance a little.
This is my second "Try" at the android world. I tried out that HTC one X+ last year and had nothing but problems and switched to an Iphone 5.
I am having an issue receiving texts from iphone users (working on that now). Other than that i'm pretty happy with the phone. Speaker quality is a little worse however I expected that. Audio quality while playing through play music was better than iphone IMO (big suprise there).
The otterbox seems well built, however the one for the Iphone 5 is a nicer product, any recommendations for a similar case? I'm a big fisherman and clumsy guy so who knows what will happen.
I still have the crappy camera update (ATT) so I will post some side by side pics there. Any tips on apps other than the normal fb/reddit?
Thanks!

Your receiving texts from iPhone users is probably them being sent to your iMessage account by default... but seems like you might already be aware of this.

Give it time for the cases to come out. Welcome to android. I'm using qmadix case which is a pretty good build but it doesn't have the rugged otter box protection. Also, if you take the time to learn about everything your new phone can do over the iphone you don't ever switch back. Not that iphones aren't amazing because their product is great but if you like making your phone the way you like it, android is the way to go. Most of the apps are pretty similar unless you root your phone and start tweaking it. Maybe someone else knows more android only type apps.

came here to say this. When my gf's mom switched she had the same issues and Apple didn't even want to help her. She kept telling them her msgs won't come through because they are going to imsg and now she has a galaxy. Apple basically told her it's an android phone and blew her off.
When my gf updated I turned imsg off before had and she hasn't had a single issue. May be a PITA but either get apple customer service to turn that feature off in your acct or get an iOS device on wifi and enable/disable it.

Swype is the main reason I switched from an iphone 5 back to android lol. That, and Moto X is a beautiful piece of hardware.
I type like a handicap without swype. It's the original way I learned how to type on a smartphone lol. I can also swype a lot faster with one hand then most people type with two.
I don't like Android at all, but being able to type fast is more important to me for the time being.
Android itself is a flawed OS. If it wasn't for XDA I would have never owned an Android device. A lot of the developers on here create tweaks, ROM's, hacks that enhance the device in simple intuitive ways, so much that it puts Google to shame (yea I said it). I mean how in the bloody hell has volume button longpress to change track NOT been implemented in all official ROM's yet? It's so intuitive, easy to implement, test and apply. They built a trillion dollar empire selling the only mobile operating system that still lags in 2013 on EPIC hardware - mind you. I'm sure 99% of people on XDA will disagree with me because MOST people don't notice these things. But for me it drives me absolutely bananas when any 6-$700 Android device in 2013 has less GUI fluidity (in both OS and third party apps) then my first generation dual core Athlon64 PC with 1GB single channel ddr1 memory. I built that system in 2005. Comparing any Android device to any WP7.5, WP8 or ios4+ device in terms of transition animation fluidity and vertical scrolling fluidity is downright embarrassing.
I suppose that's what happens when you build an empire on top of a a landfill
Given, the Moto X is definitely the best Android device released to date IMHO.

apple builds one os for one phone with one set of hardware for a pretty similar customer base generally. google builds one OS to send to 100s of phone companies for thousands of phones with millions of different piece of hardware. Those phone companies then implement their own layers of software over it. The way the process is just makes it more difficult. While I agree on some points with you, I think they do a pretty good job considering what they are up against. If google makes an os with all of the tweaks gismos and gadgets then trys to send it to the phone companeis and deal with making what they want to do work with what google's OS does, there would probably be way more issues than we currently have.
edit: I made many generalizations so feel free not to pick and choose little tid bits of info to say how I'm wrong because it was more of just a general synopsis as opposed to an exact layout of how things are.

I agree.
I'm not trying to be a **** but like... that explanation, that issue, that situation won't make my phone any faster. I understand there are reasons for this problem. But the problem is not fixed.
Come to think of it look at Windows Phones man. WP7.5 and 8 are pretty much the most fluid operating systems I've ever tried, regardless of device. You can find low, mid and high end WP devices. And they are all fluid, responsive and don't drop frames or stutter when scrolling vertically. Not always for the super low end models but you get my point. And I've tried the low end ones in the store as well. If there's one thing MS got right in the smartphone world, it's definitely the fluidity. I'm sorry but if MS can do it, Google could do it as well. But let's face it, you know as well as I do that companies won't change unless people stop buying. And most people don't seem to mind the lack of fluidity and if they do they are using iphones.
And another issue is the lack of...quality play store apps - even the popular ones with 10m+ downloads. Because that dev environment is not as restricted as ios, you see a lot of popular apps like the NOTORIOUS Facebook that takes us back to our windows 95 days where smooth scrolling was a rare phenomenon. In fact I can most likely count on one hand, the amount of times in a day that I have scrolled vertically in FB app without any lag/frame drop/stuttering. People want to say that this is not Google's fault. How is it not their fault if they ALLOWED these poorly done ios ports to make it on the Google Play Store by not posing that many restrictions.
You're absolutely right about the apps. Is really bad. There are some gorgeous android apps that conform to android design guidelines, but most of the main, most popular apps are nothing but iOS ports and look and run like sh*t on android.
As far as fluidity goes, I'm just not seeing it. I have zero lag on the moto x. I didn't have any lag on my nexus 4 either. If you're talking about scrolling in the browser, try dolphin or some other browser.

Yes the over all UI is fast. Google did a really good job in that but my concern is about the apps that i use on day to day basis like facebook and twitter. May be coming from an iphone 5 caused this issue as everything on it was buttery smooth not the same in the case of android. There is a third party app for twitter like echofon which is super smooth as in ios but official apps still suck. I hope this would change in coming days. Facebook in browser is smooth and app sucks with dropped framerate and lag.
I have some specific examples:
open dialer, stutters once halfway through the transition animation, regardless if it was running in the background or not
open email, stutters once near the end of the transition animation. opened email again, got a graphical glitch where it bypassed the transition animation completely
scrolling in gmail stutters sometime depending on scroll speed. mid to high speed scrolling stutters. only drops one frame it seems but I can notice it
the first time you start Settings, it skips a frame in the transition animation, after that it's smooth
in google drive if you click on an item and click back, it bypasses all transition and loading animation and roughly reverts to the previous screen
scrolling in sms app drops frames at certain points in scrolling. not as much as other apps, but it definitely does it
scrolling through my alarms slow to mid speed results in back to back stutters until the scrolling stops.
maps stutters when you press locate button while it speeds to your current location. also stutters during transition animation on first open. The ios app google maps is FLUID and butter smooth
gmail widget froze for 1 second while scrolling
Play store stutters consistently while scrolling.
The number of apps that stutter/lag on my iphone 5 (100+ apps) = 0 (zero)
I can't be the only one that notices these things.

I'm not kidding when I say I really don't notice but that is probably just because I don't care that much. Scrolling animation I do care about, but I just don't really notice that bad of scrolling animation for much. I mean I hate facebook but I don't use that. And chrome just launched recently so I'm actually pretty impressed with its fluidity at this stage in the development.
But for all that stuff I still think it goes back to my original post. I really don't know how many phones are running windows operating system but I don't feel like it is a lot. They also don't get android apps do they? aren't they getting windows base apps so they don't have to deal with all the issues that come with letting people create apps.
To the issue of google not moderating their app's in google play the way apple does. Apple has one or 5 phones with standard hardware. You will see apps that run perfectly on one android phone but not another. I don't believe google would be able to set criteria that would make all android apps work perfectly on all thousand of devices with thousands of different softwares on them. I'm not saying android are better, as much as I'm saying apple has it so easy. Google can't even control all the software phone companies overlay on their android OS or what hardware they use.
Finally, Ill take the bad with good. I prefer an open app market where someone can create something like better battery stats just because they felt like it and not have to jump through a million hoops. Turns out i has become extremely useful. And if the app sucks let it die. Don't use it. Capitalism lol.
But clearly no one can argue that apple products are not smoother and won't always be smoother than android products. Arguments can be made for nexus and other phones that are built purely for the android OS, but the apps being developed are being developed to work on all android products not just stock android Nexus's so they still will get lag from certain things.
Windows phone is different, closer to iOS. Remember Microsoft forces any manufacturer who makes a wp device to use a specific CPU, specific ram, etc. The OS is written for one device configuration, and just the screen tech can change. Same as Apple basically. I remember when all windows phones were forced to use the Qualcomm 1ghz snapdragon which let's the OS be perfectly optimized to the hardware.

You're not the only one, most Android users are in denial or have never given the iPhone a chance, I was one of those Android users until I picked up an iPhone 4 a few years ago to resell and decided to give it a try before getting rid of it. I have since had the 4S and the 5. All throughout, I tried going back to android with the GS2, GS3, GS4, Nexus 4, HTC One X, HTC One and now the Moto X. The full Samsung lineup was just terrible and laggy, couldn't stand using either of them for over a week, the HTC one was pretty smooth and the UI was bearable but the phone was physically awkward, the Nexus 4 lasted a day but only because it didn't have LTE, the Moto X is the best Android experience I have had all around, only complaints are attention to detail from Motorola like the wifi icon gap and the terrible AT&T logo (all can be fixed on a rooted device). I see myself hanging on to this phone for a while (I hope). Might just get a 5S for a second device though.

I actually find the inverse to be true. The vast majority of android users I know all started out on iOS, myself included... However few iOS users I know have ever tried Android... Perhaps for a day or two then reverted.
The plane fact is that Google/Android does not control the manufacturers desire for hardware, wherein, both wp and apple have a strict doctrine for hardware specs... Even with Windows phones, many have very similar specs or types of hardware technologies that wp7 are specifically designed for. Look what happened when wp7 launched... Nothing was supported, app wise, from previous os versions... This speaks to how much wp is compartmentalized, even though it appears to have a variety of device choices.
This is the trade off that we Android users accept, a truly vast array of device types, having virtually any pick and combination of hardware we want, with an endless supply of new devices, but this leads to fragmentation... Jb really targeted this issue and has done amazing things to close the software compatibility issues between devices from both ends of the spectrum... And I believe it will only get better with each new android version.
Personally, I'll take a little stutter hear and there ( haven't seen a touch of it with the moto x btw) than be told what hardware and what software I can have...

Pretty disappointed after picking up my gear last week. I'm going to give it a month before I dump mine for sale if they don't start putting out useful apps for it. Seems like half the stuff is pushed out with bugs and semi working or not working at all. Half the apps in the store (gee there really isn't much) hang on install, fail to work correctly or are just junk that you don't need. Is it really that hard to offer an app that would let you read your full email body on it, or an app that would give you facebook updates on it without reading them on the phone, or a watch making app that actually tells time and doesn't lock up 4 times a day? Samsung should just change its name to the Galaxy gear beta edition. I understand the 30% return rate on them now after owning one.

I don't really get where people find the time and energy to post like this. Get a refund and move on with your life, already.
The galaxy gear is awesome (and so is the pebble, the sony smartwatch, etc. Can't wait to see what Google and Apple do)
Samsung has really knocked this out of the park and showed us the potential of wearables - probably better than anyone - and how they're so obviously going to be the future.
Samsung has been innovating incredibly well lately. I really hope Microsoft/Google/Apple up their game and keep up!
Well...it is indeed lacking a lot of features that should be there right out of the box but I am sure you have done your research before you bought the watch. I did do my research and I am quite happy with the watch. I wouldn't buy it at $300 but at $210 with tmobile discount 30% off, this is not a bad buy at all.
I never once had a problem with installing apps from Samsung app store. Their selection is really small and apps are not that great but it never hang or fail to install for me. You can also sideload apps as long as they don't require access to internet if you don't mind some extra steps of installing.
Reading email would be a nice thing but I don't see myself using the tiny screen to read email. I would rather want to do it on the phone.
Facebook update sure would be nice.
Never lock up 4 times a day but then I don't use watch styler app or custom face.
Also please try the ATN app. It helps with all the notifications that I need the watch to show such as whatsapp and whatever others app you might need.
Could it be better ? Sure. Will it get better? Of coarse it will !
There's nothing BETA about it, its simply a new consumer product which hasn't boomed yet.. once the developers gain interest you can bet your ass your going to see some amazing stuff from the gear.
Anything Samsung related on the watch works extremely well, could they have included additional features sure. But why would they ? Its a Samsung device providing support with Samsung products/applications straight out of the box.
All the things listed can be easily resolved via software updates, or third party software. Eg. ATN.
Any complaint you have about the gear will have the same complaubt about the new sony smart watch. Its new. Do your homework before you buy something.

Eh, I love mine (got the 30% off deal) but I agree with the OP and am disappointed with the small amount of apps in the Samsung store... and at least half of it is junk. A big reason for that is because Samsung is being weird about releasing the SDK to the public, I wish they'd get on with that soon. Though I think (I hope) the situation will get a lot better soon when they release official updates for S3, S4, Note2 to make them compatible with the Gear.
I have to disagree with the OP. The gear is amazing. I don't have problems installing apps and I think some of them are pretty good like watch styler. The only thing I don't like about the gear is that it doesn't show notifications for third party apps and I hope Samsung releases an update enabling notifications for all apps.

I love my Gear.
Has all the Apps I want.
Anybody that takes the time to find this forum should know,
You do not have to get all the Apps from the Samsung Store.
A member of XDA has a solution for notifications, many people use it and like it.
Do not know about facebook, could care less about facebook.
Sounds like the OP thinks the device replaces a smartphone,
A smartwatch tells you at a glance if the message you get is worth pulling your smartphone out.
Who other than the OP, has every had any problems with the Gear Locking up?
Who other than the OP can not find a way to tell time with the Gear?

watch making app STILL locks up daily your clock

installing apps hang alot
some dont work or give you just a blank watch face when you try to open them
Guess all the posts in the gear forum are made up
I quit flashing roms and tinkering since my HTC MDA days, I just want a product that works out of the box I guess
Every review is the same.. so so on it. Return rate is high also. The few that love them, great, tinker away with yours. When I can read my 3rd party apps emails, pick from 100s and 100s of apps maybe Ill dig it. Till then its a beta toy as far as im concerned. i knew it when i got it just didnt expect it to be this crappy I guess.
I'd like to know how many of the returned watches are due to either people not usually wearing a watch or because it wasn't compatible with their device
I've not had any of the problems mentioned here (mind, I didn't use watchstyler). Mic and speaker seem fine to me
Hardly any apps these days mention what has changed between versions so can't see that being a negative. Having to reset every time there is an update sucks though (however, the restore thing seems to go ok for the most part)
I just want my notifications to give more detail - mms to show pic, email to display html, sms/facebook/etc not be limited by character limit. It's all very possible going on the evidence
Couldn't care less about apps. Good to be able to sideload though

I'm loving my gear but can also appreciate where the OP is coming from. In the main I think the gear lives up to its expectations ax far as I am concerned.
The biggest issue I have is the lack of water resistance, and how it handles facebook notifications. I am hoping though that this thing gets better as time moves along. It does worry me however that work on the Gear 2 will already have started and we will end up with a non supported device quite quickly.

you have to be blind to call Gear a decent product. they had a great idea, but the execution is terrible and you may disagree with that, but you are lying to yourself. this needs so much work to become a decent product.

After reading your post, I had to REGISTER to reply.. :fingers-crossed:
Seems like you got a beef with the apps. Not the phone. You keep talking about bad apps, or not enough apps. Well they were selling out in my area, and I got mine on discount. Found out they were selling fast on Ebay. Purchased a couple more at discount, sold them for a profit. It seems like a lot of people think differently than you. We all understand this is a FIRST, you didn't expect this to first run to be PERFECT did you...
BTW, I am a layman, don't know JACK-CHIT, to be honest. I got the Note 3 on a humble, and since I was way over my head with the Note 3, I might as well go all the way..Got the Gear at $209.. Happy Camper...

What is the best auto task killer? I've been using advanced task killer by rechild from the market and it leaves a lot left to be desired in the way of automatically killing tasks.
Any good recommendations? Thanks!

best would be if everyone thought so, but in reality, best is what you think is best, as best will differ for every single person. i like fast reboot pro. it doesnt actually reboot your device, it just frees your ram memory like it is being rebooted.
I don't think you need a task killer in Lollipop, you haven't for a few years now.
If you do want to kill activities, you can just enable "do not keep activities" in developer options.

that just wont let other apps open. many android people dont think that we need a task killer, as android will free ram when needed. and thats fine, thats their belief. for me, android doesnt do the job good enough, for how i use the device. for me, android is a little lazy to free ram. and when it finally does, it slows down any device. so, i can change where i want it to free ram, but its still a little lazy, so i free ram myself, and am much happier about it.

A task killer is generally not needed nor recommended for any android version over 4.0. The OS will automatically fee memory when needed. Most phones upgraded to lollipop have ample memory and killing idle tasks serves no purpose and only ibcraaes the app load time when it is relaunched.
If however you must close a task for whatever reason you can do so directly from the system settings under apps>running>select force stop. You could even setup a shortcut to this on the home screen.

Exactly. Unused ram is wasted ram. Task killers are bs! Don't use these garbage apps! I keep all my apps open and still only use 1/2 my available ram.
Well yea I only force stop if a program is not responding... But wouldn't keeping a program active in the memory use up precious battery life?

No. When an app is jot in the foreground it is not using CPU cycles so there is no battery drain. Consumed ram does not affect battery life.
However killing an app totally will cause a greater amount of processing to open the next time you use it and that will equal more consumed battery.

You're better off with greenify. Especially if you're rooted.
Posted below is an image from the greenify app analyzer... What should I do? Select all those apps?

I generally do not Greenify widgets but apps such as Facebook, Allcast and others that I don't constantly refer to. It's up to you what you use it for though. With 5.0.x folks can no longer Greenify "system" apps such as youtube, G+ and whatnot .. which is kind of a bummer.
I don't care what anyone says....android absolutely still needs a task killer. And I'm pissed off that atk no longer works. I have a note 4, and my available memory is now half what it was, and it DOES effect performance because android is still one big memory leak! Geeees!
Using task killers is just slowing your device down. Android is not like windows with its lousy ram management.
As for samsung devices those will always be slow due to the crappy way Samsung does software.

Well, that's funny. ....I might be new to xda, but not in the least new to android phones and tablets. The funny thing is, all my Samsung devices have been plenty fast. And surprisingly (not really), that only holds true WHEN I'M ABLE TO KILL ALL THE BS MANUALLY. It is for this reason that ANDROID still needs a task killer. If there were ONLY ONE flavor of android, completely stock, on EVERY manufacturers device, on every carrier, then that might not be the case, but then again that would be Microsoft Windows, now, wouldn't it? And not android. Android's best feature is that it's customizable.
As for telling me that using task killers is slowing me down. ......EXPERIENCE SIMPLY PROVES THAT FALSE. If that WERE true, then rebooting the phone (the only easy way to kill all tasks now) wouldn't show a notable improvement in speed, and not rebooting wouldn't result in degradation of performance over time. And neither of those are evident in empirical experience. Not rebooting DOES result in degrading performance over time, and rebooting DOES result in notable increase in performance.

That is because of Samsung lousy software. Take a look at any nexus device and you will see weeks of not rebooting without a bit of slow down or lag.
Your experience is not relevant as it is Samsung based which means it is not pure android. It's a distro like many Linux distros. Also your experience with Android is pointless as android is still new.

So then it's just that you don't like Samsung and that you have a love affair with nexus, not that you have any real valid argument to support your sentiment about task killers. OK. Great. Happy for you. Now that we got your phone love situation figured out, let's honestly discuss the lunacy of your opinion. It is completely nonsensical. OOOOOHHHH it's a Samsung. The way they do things, blah blah blah. News flash, supergenius, Samsung holds 65% of the android market. Like Samsung or not, they dominate the market, so if android on their devices has memory leaks, 65% OF THE MARKET needs task killers. It doesn't take Stephen Hawking to figure that out. Further, Android launched in 2008. That's 7 years ago, and is the lions share of smart device OS's. This hardly qualifies as "still new".
In all your infinite wisdom, do you truly have no clue how ludicrous your statements are?

First off before you start going off at the mouth you should understand someones history before you jump to conclusions. how much of the market samsung holds is pointless. Mainly when most Samsung devices here are not running samsungs Touchwiz software.
I am no fan boy of any OEM at all. They all have their issues. As does the OS.
Now I have used every samsung device that has ever been released up to the s4. Where I walked away from them when they lied to developers. 3rd party developers are what made them popular and like HTC they turned their backs on the developers. ITs only a matter of time until they follow the same route.
Yes 7 years is still very new in the terms of OS. The OS is still so new that it cant even take advantage of the hardware that oem are using in their device.

Heh... "noob" ... LOL Attitude. LOL No... brains. One could easily say "supergeniuses" with an attitude... expecially when they have such a high opinion of themselves that they are completely blind to the truth from those arguing against them. ... making a statement like "Gotta love noobs with an attitude" is highly indicative of the inability to admit that the "noob" is completely right.

You continue to argue "device maker", when in reality that is a completely pointless argument. Gasoline produces high carbon emissions when burned, so we shouldn't use it. Right. True. But sense less than .0000001% of motor vehicles use anything else, .... well... you see the point I'm making there I'm sure. Market share DOES matter. Regardless of any downside you may perceive in Samsung devices... they are still currently the majority of devices in use. You completely contradict yourself also.... In one... Android doesn't need task killers. In another "They all have their issues. As does the OS" ... so then it does still need task killers.
Now...I completely concur. One should not be jumping to conclusions about someone, of whom they know nothing...... For example.... I'm a 30 year veteran programmer and software developer. I've worked on everything from IBM OS/VS1 and OS/VM, to DOS, to AT&T Unix, to SCO Unix, to VAX, to the very first version of Linux before there even was a RedHat, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc, before Gnome and KDE and the rest, from MS Windows v 3.0 up through Windows XP, 2000, etc. and all the NT's and other MS Server OS's in there. I've worked in the cell phone industry for several years, up to and including during the development and release of Android at the beginning. I've used several different devices, including the crappiest devices ever produced in the world (Huawei... who makes the Nexus by the way- I used one once. ONCE!).
So... when you start arguing "device makers" rather than the actual subject (whether or not task killers are still helpful), YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT! That's not a "noob" statement Mr. gee2012 ... it's a statement of fact .... and anyone who would think that they can insult someone like me, with a statement like that, is less than worthy of the disccussion with me.

Look I have had enough of your attitude. here you are just another noob.
Yes I said there are issues. As you seem to have an issue with reading, I never said Android needs task killers.
For someone that says they have worked on soo many things you seem to miss the fact that the OEM does matter as each one uses different distros of android. Touch wiz is as different from stock android as windows 98 is from windows 10.
Now with your attitude maybe its time to decide if you are worthy to even be here.
Now as this topic has been talked about to death over the years and it is going no where.
