This other thread may help towards getting into recovery mode.

Hello
Thankyou for the reply
I was able to get the phone to "Downloading mode" but its not working from there
I tried the links you pointed out and phone seems to be still stuck
When i boot my phone normally, i still have "mobile .. Exclamation .. PC " icon
I can put my phone to Downloading mode with android icon and Odin recognises my phone
But im not able to recover the phone from that state
Can you guide me to thread which can help me from those steps
Shls i download bootloader or without bootloader ...any steps are appreciated

I was once in the spot you are in, even to the point of having the same screen and not getting to Recovery.
I solved my problem with this Heimdall One-Click from the thread you originally referenced:
I897UCKK4 Stock, Wipe, with option to install Bootloaders, Param, and Repartition-Heimdall One-Click.

Man.. you are my hero
My fone is up and running now with first time flash. i see some pixel thing u mentioned but everything is sweet
Could you kindly help me show steps to upgrade the fone to latest software ,, lollipop or kitkat
thanks again

I took mine up to CyanogenMod 10.2, which is JellyBean 4.3.
Since then I have reflashed it with GamerzRom v4, based on CyanogenMod 10.1 - JellyBean 4.2.2. It's thread is here.
I am using my Captivate as a media player and Sports App/Activity tracker. In fact I have disabled much that came with the ROM, an act to pare down what is running on it. I haven't tried any of the KitKat or Lollipop ports available in the forum. Recommending any of them would be pure guesswork on my part. The best I can do is suggest reading a portion of the threads for the ROMs available, being clear about what you expect your phone to do, and try the best fit. There is no reason you couldn't try several.

Thank you fro the reply
how did you get into recovery mode?
I tried pressing volume up/down and power button and all i see is att logo

Go into download mode and use odin one click to flash stock Rom.
There are many ways to boot into download mode, its different from recovery mode in case you bricked your phone and you're not able to access the recovery you could try going into dl mode and using a computer and a USB cable to fix it. I will post a tutorial link.

It's been a couple of years, but I think I used one of the battery pull methods listed in the second link I posted. A quick clip from that post:
FROM A POWERED-DOWN STATE - BATTERY REMOVED
- Insert battery, then press and hold Vol+ and Vol-, then press and hold power. hold all 3 for 5 seconds.
- Press and hold Vol+/Vol-, Insert Battery, hold power. hold all 3 for 5 seconds
- Press and hold Vol+/Vol-, hold power, Insert Battery
- Insert battery, then press and hold Vol+, then press and hold power. hold all 3 for 5 seconds.- Press and hold Vol+, Insert Battery, hold power. hold all 3 for 5 seconds- Press and hold Vol+, hold power, Insert Battery

Before you started all of this were you on GingerBread bootloaders?
If you were not on GB bootloaders, did you flash them when you used the Odin/Heimdall One-Click?
At this point I am thinking you should have a stock recovery on your phone. Even so, you should still be able to get into Recovery Mode, either stock or custom, with one of the listed methods. I am almost at the point of suggesting you reflash the Odin One-Click.

I was on froyo 2.2 and while i was flasing to GB i got into issue
I used the steps you mentioned to recover the device from bricked mode
now i have stock rom and the phone is up and running fine but could not get into recovery to flash a new rom to move to 4,4

The solution may be to Odin flash a KK4 kernel that includes CWM recovery. I an searching for the Corn KK4 kernel, the one I used, but have yet to find it.

Before you flash more with bootloaders and modems I would suggest using the Phone Info *Samsung* app to verify what is on the phone. It is free in the Play Store, the dev is vndnguyen. I don't actually think there would be a problem one way or the other, but it's always good to know and this way you flash the correct kernel.

[Q] What kind of brick would this be considered and steps to fix it

My Captivate is currently in a state where it can boot up and it reaches the Cognition boot screen and does nothing further. When trying to use the 2 button+usb cord method to enter download mode the phone loads the charging battery but the animation is frozen.
Would this be considered a soft or hard brick? I'm not familiar with the factors that constitute the differences between the two. Is is a soft brick because the phone can still turn on or is it a hard brick because download mode is unreachable?
I was a user of Cognition 5 v1.00 but as support of the rom by the developer seemed to waiver I felt myself looking for a new GB Rom for my phone. I first flashed Cognition 4.5.3 onto my phone in order to have a stable Rom on my phone until I could decide upon the GB Rom I wanted to try. I decided to flash CM7 and began following the steps outlined in the thread. I formatted my system, data, and cache partitions but upon reboot I reached the point where I am currently.
I have not yet tried the jig as I do not have it on hand at my school apartment. Button combos, the usb cord, and the one click unbrick have not solved the problem and I would like to know if their are any other methods I could use to enter download mode until I am able to procure my jig and try that method.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Soft Bricked
You are whats considered soft bricked. Id recommend pulling out battery, SIM and SD. Open odin with with admin rights. Plug your phone to the computer, press volume up and down and insert battery. If that doesn't work then I would suggest making/buying a jig and flash back to stock (eclair, froyo or GB). As to how to get CM7 to work I can't offer any help since i haven't used it in a while and flashing method changed. I can recommend Atomic Fusion, KF1 based and very nice (after u theme it)
Clay
+1 I agree with prbassplayer. You have to get into dl mode and if none of the key combos work, then a jig is probably the only way. I use one and it works great in exactly the situation you seem to be in.
edit: Sorry for the double post, forget this and read next. :-/

You might have crossed up some files and such from going back and forth between GB and Eclair. So need to flash back to stock and start over with fresh install.
If you're still interested in CM7, after rooting, you can install Rom Manager and follow the install process in the CM7 OP or check out their website, it'll walk you thru the whole thing.
Hope this helps

Thank you for the input. At this point it seems that the jig is the only option as I've already tried the usb cord volume up and down process to no avail. I already own a jig, I just need to find a way to my parents house to go grab it.
They aren't hard to make to be honest and if u have a micro usb cable u don't care for it only cost w/e resistors cost for you there.
Using the SDK to use adb commands to get into download mode isn't an option as mentioned in this thread here?

If you've already installed the GB bootloaders, the button combination has changed. I believe it is just volume down-power for gingerbread. Try that or volume up-power then release once the logo starts to see if that gets you into download or recovery.

No on Cog it is not. You can use the 3 button method just fine.
FYI GB bootloaders are not designed for CM7. CM7 used Froyo based bootloaders for its roms.

[Q] amateur in need of help!

I followed instructions on a link via the cyanogenmod website, to try and get cm7 on my phone. The instructions were on a wiki website which I now know is not reliable!
I got to the stage "flashing cyanagonmod" to find out that the zip files had to be in the internal sd card BEFORE starting the whole process!
I can still access download mode and recovery. But my phone gets stuck on the "Samsung galaxy i9000" intro screen.
I tried restoring and factory reset but still no joy...
any help is very appreciated!
Download some odin flashable ROM, and flash that in download mode.
where do I find an odin ROM and how do I know which one to use?
corrected: samfirmware.com
If you want a custom rom, then look through here however your going to have to read which is odin flashable...
This is a guide and rom i have used myself. Click here
BTW this is obviously assuming you are on SGS I9000 the second link should be quite clear...
here's a nice link to finding stock firmwares and using Odin:

Thanks for your post. Only problem is ODin doesn't recognise when my phone is plugged in? i.e. there isn't that yellow box showing...help!
Ok so im guessing your trying the 3 button combo for download mode (vol up + home + power). Alternatives to force download is a homemade jig, which is easily obtainable from ebay for a relatively cheap price. Other ways you can try is holding the combo for as long as you can, some have reported it may even work after 3 mins. Another method is hold the combo and then whilst holding it insert the battery. Also the last method but have the usb plugged into with odin open, then put the battery in. Many many ways... just search
Is that what you mean or that you CAN get to download mode and Odin and the computer does NOT recognise when you plug it in. If this is try re-installing the drivers using kies, its under the tools menu. Try a different version of odin, plug phone in then try the combo (with battery already in, then without). Have you closed all Kies applications background processes? (use task manager in windows). Use another computer..
Also have you read this
Edit: Forgot to add, can you get into Recovery? Then use your nandroid backup which you should always do before flashing.. If you dont have a back up try use ADB to force download mode "adb reboot download"
Need to know what options you have available in-order to help, what can you do? Is there any response from your phone with pressing buttons or key combinations??

If you can see a screen, it's not bricked. For download mode, did you try (from a powered-off state) holding Vol+ and Vol-, then inserting the USB plug? You may also have to take the battery out, hold v+/v-, insert plug, then insert battery.
If those don't work, look into getting yourself a jig.

yes i get the AT&T logo infinite looping but no way to get download mode.. yes I even tried the vol+vol- ...
If those combinations aren't working for you, you will most likely need to either buy or make yourself a jig. It's not very expensive - either buy 3 resistors at an electronics store, or see if you can find one on Ebay. That's the easiest, most surefire way to get into download mode.
One last thing to try, though, just in case - try holding Vol- and Power from a powered-off state. That's the Gingerbread combination for i9000 bootloaders, but it won't hurt to try them.

Flash any other firmware other than jf6 and you'll be good.

That should work, as you're installing a Gingerbread Rom, you'll need the matching bootloaders.
Just make sure you have a good connection to your computer, and that your computer won't lose power in the process.

Glad to hear it worked.
- UCKF1 uses the AT&T Gingerbread bootloaders, not the i9000. You have the option to flash the i9000 ones separately, but I wouldn't recommend it, as there really isn't a pressing reason to put yourself in that danger.
- If you want to try CM7 again, I would recommend installing it separately from Rom manager - rom manager tends to be problematic.
- I don't think super one-click works with 2.3.x roms. You'll need to flash a kernel with CWM baked in (like boog's kernel) using Odin or Heimdall, then flash CM7.

thank you lot for helping me .. if I install directly this one:
With Bootloaders - Link 1 / Link 2 [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]
Boog includes recovrey.. so once install this I can get even recovery ready for cm7???

Use one of the two that I have left highlighted. If you want to use Odin, use the first one. If you prefer Heimdall, use the second one. Either one will get you to a stock state, with CWM, so that you can flash CM7. And, both will do this without flashing bootloaders. Definitely, no matter what, do not choose a package with bootloaders. You want a package that says "no bootloaders".

well nothing is happening at all when pressing the 3 buttons together, all i wanna do is restoring it to factory settings and nothing more but i don't know how to do this now
its the vol down this time not up..
Remove battery
reinsert it after a few secs
again vol down power and home
if nothing happens try charging the battery for a while and try the above steps
1) Charge your phone.
2) Install Kies on your computer.
3) Restart computer
4) Plug phone into computer. Is it detected?
5) Repeat step 4 but after pressing volume down/power/home
6) Repeat step 5 but after using samsung USB jig (you have to buy it but it's cheap)
the samsung USB jig will try to 'force' your phone into the same mode that volume down/power/home does.
I would never ask a regular xda user this question but...
are you sure you have an N7000? does it have a home button? how many contacts are on the battery?

i hate to say it but he updated to the latest stock and then tried to flash files from recovery.
it sounds to me like mmc_cap_erase bug
assuming, of course, that he doesn't have an i717 and flashed N7000 files over it.
which would just as easily brick

OP all hope is not lost though, if you can get into download mode we can save your phone. on the other hand if you are under warranty, go to the Samsung store and tell them you tried to factory reset from stock and it wouldn't boot again (and nothing about rooting etc). you will not be under warranty if you are in the USA or Canada and have an N7000
sounds to me like your flash counter should still be 0

Of course i'm sure that i have Galaxy Note N7000, the only issue is that i'm just new to the android world and i'm not familiar with the android terms like Root, Flash, Kernel and stuff like these and that's why i'm stuck here
But my question is why can't i go to the recovery mood normally like why pressing the home+power+volume down is not working for me?? btw i'm not in the united states and unfortunately i bought this phone when i was on a vacation and i'm in another country right now

Can you get into download mode or not.
Pull battery. Wait a minute. Put battery back in. Hold home power DOWN (not up)

Unfortunately i can't
If you can't enter download mode then you're superbricked. You can repartition the chip which is a pretty advanced process and I imagine you'd struggle with it, or you can claim warranty. In future read the forums thoroughly before doing any sort of flashing, start with the stickies and make yourself aware of any and all issues before you flash.

not sure even the battery has any juice left

[Q] Stuck in boot loop

Hey everyone. I looked around the forums for a situation similar to mine, and didn't find a case exactly the same as mine, though it's possible I missed something. Basically, my little sister said her captivate was randomly shutting down lately, so I decided to root it for her. I rooted my own HTC Inspire this summer with no problems, so I figured I should be able to do it. The root went just fine, but when I tried to get into 3 button recovery mode, it wasn't working. I had read some stuff (obviously not well enough) and read somewhere to install the speedmod kernel. Now I'm stuck in a boot loop and can't get off of the Galaxy S/SGH-I897/SAMSUNG screen. I tried to go into download mode, but now I can't get into that mode either. Any ideas? I read on the forums about making a JIG, and I might have to end up doing that, but if I can avoid it, I'd like to. Thanks in advance.
Depending on what stock rom u were on before that flash of the speedmod kernel, it may not boot ur phone, because i believe it was froyo based. And if u got it from TRusselo's Guide thread it was there just so u could use it to reboot into cwm recovery and flash a dev rom. Have u tried holding both volume up and down & power buttons together until u see the at&t screen and then releasing the buttons ?? That should boot u into cwm. And from there u can flash a dev rom.
Download mode is--phone off, hold volume down, insert micro usb end of cable into phone, having already opened Odin or Heimdall and usb end of cable already connected to pc. Or of course, jig will do the trick for ya.
U could also try flashin an appropriate kernel for ur firmware u r on --- stock or dev'd. But u will need to still get into download or recovery for that. But i would think u should be able to boot up with no probs with a correct kernel.

I did manage to get it into download mode. I had the usb cord already connected to the phone when I was holding Volume-, so that was the problem with that. Buuuut, I can't get into CWM at all. Holding Volume+ and Volume- plus the power button loads it directly into the Samsung logo screen, then reboots the phone. Maybe I need to reinstall CWM?

You need to flash a different kernel if you wanna get in recovery but at this point, flashing KK4 through Odin seems like a better idea

I already went ahead and did that, and it's loading back to the regular start screen. Now I'm just trying to get CM10 on there for her, but according to their installation instructions, I need to be able to get into CWM recovery using the 3 button combo, which is where I'm currently stuck. According to one guide I'm reading right now, installing the corn kernel should fix the problem.

Yes indeed. Have CM10 on your SD. flash Corn kernel through Odin 1.85, reboot in recovery and flash CM10 as per their instructions.

Yeah, still can't get into recovery. I turn off the phone, hold both volume buttons and the power button, but then it just stays at and keeps reloading the samsung loading screen (which now says i9000 instead of sgh-i897 like it did before). If I let go of the power button while on this screen, it progresses through the 3G/ATT screen and finally turns on the phone. Not sure what I need to do now. More research apparently.

Which KK4 did you flash? With the I897 bootloaders or I9000? And did you flash Corn kernel?
Getting in recovery can be tricky with the button combo. you could use ROM manager to get in recovery if you did flash Corn.

Well, I assumed it was the I897 one since the guide I had been using was for that version of the captivate, but I'm going to redownload one so I can be sure. The model number under phone info says "SAMSUNG-SGH-I897" and the kernel version is the "Cornv706" version.
Also, couldn't get into recovery with ROM manager either; it just got stuck at the Samsung screen.

In that case, reflash both stock KK4 and Corn Kernel. Seems like something went wrong.
