Firmware upgrade encountered an error - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to flash Corn Kernel with Odin and it kept failing in download mode. So, after two hours or so, I had to pull the plug. It then went to the. ...../!\..... screen saying, "firmware upgrade encountered an error, please select recovery in kies and try again." However, kies hangs on connecting, and now I'm stuck with a paperweight.(
Ps, I have tried to use SDK and ADB, but to no avail. ADB comes back with no devices found.
Help!!!!

IIRC, Kies can cause a conflict with the drivers when trying to use other methods. You may need to un-install Kies and then reinstall the drivers before adb will work.
The ......../!\........ screen will function as a download mode, from here. I have had my phone in this condition before and was able to use heimdall to flash a rom.

Thank you for your reply, however, attempting to use download and open the setup in the captivate drivers results in an error.
It specifically says, SAMSUNG Android USB Modem Software was not installed successfully
(9). All I can do is click OK. I tried again, but no luck.

I'm very fuzzy about driver issues with Windows. It has been years since I last dual booted my laptop and had the ability to use Odin. Linux handles drivers differently, Odin and Kies do not work on Linux, therefore I have been using Heimdall in place of Odin and the only "issue" I have is that it is simpler to always use the same usb port on the laptop.

Ima newbie, what's Linux? I keep hearing that word thrown around.

It's a computer operating system based on Unix. Development began on it in the early '90s. Android uses the Linux kernel at the very core. The kernel is the interface between software and hardware.
Linux is used in lieu of Windows or Mac OS. Like Android, it is very open to user customizations.
Heimdall is the open source equivalent of Odin. It works on Linux, Windows, or Mac.

Ohmg I had no idea what you meant when you said" dual booted" now I realize that Linux is not another computer COMPANY completely, it's just a kernel! Ha, I'll have to add that to my list of ways of how Windows is similar to android.
I'm jumping right on that verry soon.
Also, I've tried to use a program that claims that 13 of my drivers were outdated, however, I updated that, however that did not fix the issue. As I said, the download posted didn't work so I have ran into another wall.
Gah!

Eventually, i tried it on my more recent laptop and used a more recent version on Odin, and boom! it worked flawlessly.

Odin stopped detecting my sgs, any ideas?

Don't know why but Odin (1.3, 1.53 and 1.7) stopped seeing my phone.
Running it in Win XP, from a Virtualbox under Ubuntu 10.10
Has been running fine so really no clue what's going on.
Strange thing is that Heimdall does work, sees the phone, no probs.
Maybe I changed or deleted something, drivers maybe but I can't recall having changed anything other than some proposed XP updates.
I would like to get Odin recognizing my sgs again so any help would be appreciated!
When you are in Odin, Have you checked KIES is NOT running in the icon tray ??
if you have:
try a different USB port, this happens to me occasionally (weird eh! )
if that fails, try to un-install KIES (if you have it) and then re install it, this should also re install the drivers.
if you dont fancy doing all of that, the drivers are available to download here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Hi, thanks for the quick response.
Kies is completely disabled, only used it once to move to Froyo. I ran the driver update and Odin just worked ever since. It's not the usb port cause Heimdall is working fine on it, btw, switched and and it makes no difference.
I just reinstalled the drivers once more, booted and still odin doesn't see the phone, Heimdall does...
Damn, frustrating. Now what?
I wouldn't bother with trying to run Odin on Ubuntu. I use heimdall on Ubuntu and its less risky than Odin and gives you more pick and mix options!
Its just untar-ing a few files...

i had the same problem, but then i found out i had to re-register with kies, so that my computer would pick up my phone when in download mode. so i backed up with kies so my phone was recognised, and then went into to download mode and let odin work its magic with darkys rom

Kies does work in XP in Virtualbox in (Linux yippee!) Ubuntu.
I would still like to get to the bottom of this. I will continue with Heimdall in virtualbox/xp (I couldn't get Heimdall to work under Ubuntu &!^!%!!) but will remove and reinstall Kies and see how that pans out. Thanks for the tips!
Don't Move Cabel Once phone in Download mode if odin is still not detecting check that you have installed drivers and remove battry from phone then again go to download mode

[Q] odin will not detect my phone

i have windows 7 and a samsung captivaye flashed with heimdall 2.3.4 gingerbread. i want to flash 2.3.5 with clockwork mod and can only find one that comes with a odin one click. my problem is the comuter recognizes the phone heimdall does too but no version of odin will. any ideas on how to get odin to see my phone. and yes im in download mode
my computer is running windows 7 and i have a samsung captivate. my computer recognizes my phone, hemdall recognizes my phone but no version of Odin will. i am running 2.3.4 gingerbread flashed with heimdall but i want to flash it with 2.3.5 with clockwork mod which the only version i could find came in a odin one click package. any ideas on how to get odin to recognize my phone???
and yes i ran odin as admin still no go
Reinstall your drivers. After installing the Heimdall driver, your driver that you need for Odin is borked.
i have reinstalled the phone drivers many times. i eaven downloaded them from samsung and tried that that. when i plug my phone in the computer will say installing drivers then it says completed. i restarted computer right click odin run as admin but nothing shows up in the com box..

can i unplug the phones usb cable from the pc while it is in download mode? i do not want to brick the phone
also is there a way to get out of download mode with out flashing the rom
got it. i let kies mini install drivers for phone then once kies mini found the phone so to did odin
oh and just help someone else who may be having these issues. yes you can unplug the phone as long as its not already flashing a rom. never unplug if already in the middle of flashing or you will brick the phone. to get out of download mode if you are not in the middle of a flash. if you find yourself like me and have put the phone in download mode and odin or whatever you are using will not recognize it or maybe you forgot to check usb debugging then unplug phone from computer remove battery for a few seconds and the phone should boot normally. tahnks guys for all the help i really appreciate it

Are you using the cable that came with the phone?
Have you tried a different cable?
Do you have Debugging Mode turned on?
You might want to post in the S4 Active Q&A forum.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-active/help

If you connect your phone to the PC and then go to the computer's Device Manager, is it recognizing the phone correctly? Or are you getting the yellow exclamation point over the icon?
I use Heimdall when doing Odin tasks. It is an Open Source equivalent to Odin available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I'm not too familiar with Windows problems because I have been on Linux for the past 7 years. I have only used Windows in those years for updates to a Captivate that only worked through Kies, and rooting an Acer tablet with a Windows only tool.

What version of Odin are you using?
Have you tried Kies?
Is your phone stock or modified?

I have tried numerous computers, numerous cables, numerous USB ports, I have tried every version of Odin known to mankind, I have tried with kies, without kies, and my phone is completely stock, not modified whatsoever, this one has me stumped. I have used odin on no less than 1000 phones never have I had a phone not react to Odin. the phone reacts 100% of the time to anything but Odin, I am wondering if Samsung has released a security update that is preventing communication with Odin

UPDATE:
After trying 3 different computers (windows XP & windows 7 64 & 32 bit, with Kies installed and without Kies installed), 12 different USB Ports, and 10 different cables at my house to NO AVAIL, just for a goof went to a friends house to try his computer (Windows 7 64 bit with Kies 2.6 & 3 installed), put the phone in download mode, connected it to his computer, with a random cable, opened Odin, and BOOM it showed up right away. I DON'T GET IT !!! WTF !! Yes, I was able to Root the device with Towelroot after reverting from 4.4.2 Build NH3 to 4.4.2 Build NE3, Now I just have to get this thing home to "Fix" the IMEI number. One must be rooted before being able to "Fix" the IMEI number. I wish Samsung would just cut the **** with these unnecessary updates.....
This is one for the books. Must have just been a finicky phone..... Didn't like my computers, cables, or something.

Bricked even with download mode ?

Hi All,
here is the story, I was on MilkyS GB rom, made a ndriod backup, then flashed dark knight 2.1 then wiped , flashed DK3 w/ Semaphone. Today, I was going to flash stock JVU via Odin but while I was charging up the phone I already noticed Windows was showing error saying something like ' USB device is malfunction cannot install' , so I thought that must be a DK3 bug for not able to access to the SD card, so I did not care.
Went ahead and tried to flash Odin, sure enough Odin did not detect my phone, so did Google and found 'Gnex USB drivers' which by the way took forever to install, while waiting , I thought I might as well just go back to MilkyS GB by using the backup I have done before, so I went in recovery tried to restore, but not successful, so I went ahead and choose reboot....now I am stuck at the boot screen, pull battery, I can go into download mode , however, Odin cannot detect the phone so I still can NOT flash anything.... (just now tried all kinds of drivers I can find, CM7 USB driver, Google usb_driver_r04-windows, even installed the drivers within Andriod SDK, still can't detect the phone..)
Any suggestions ? am I out of luck ? by the way, tried installing drivers in 3 x different laptops and with different USB port on them...
Have you tried a different USB cable? Also ensure KIES is not running & that there are no KIES processes running in the background. Make sure no other usb devices connected to the pc. I've also heard Windows 7 64bit can be the issue sometime but not sure so maybe try a windows xp pc.
Also try disabling any antivirus/firewall on the pc. I had this is issue but for me restarting pc and using a different USB port did the trick.
Should you figure out the USB issue you can't actually restore a Gingerbread backup from ICS.
You will need to get a stock rom (darky resurection should also work) and flash with ODIN. You will need a 3 file stock rom (pda, phone, csc) & 512 pit file.
From here you will need to select all files into relevant places, check repartion and run ODIN. Sometimes I've also needed to flash a second time with just the 3 files and repartition unchecked.

thanks scubadude for your reply. Yes, tried 2 x cables, 3 x laptops and all the USB ports on the laptops, now trying on a clean XP , AV disabled PC still no go.
I know the Odin 3 file process and so on and I kind of know that I can't flash GB on top of ICS that is why I attempt to flash stock in Odin but I guess I was just impatient to wait for the stupid Samsung driver to be installed and made a stupid mistake...

I guess you have tried going back in recovery mode using the 3-button combo but that is also not working?
Odin isn't recognizing your phone but does windows recognize it? If you uninstall all samsung drivers and then try to connect your phone to PC does it ask for installation of drivers? .. if it doesn't that means your phone's usb could have become faulty.. (just speculating)
Or you can try to use Heimdall instead of Odin.. maybe that'll work for you..

Also try cleaning the contacts in usb port on the phone with a small brush(this worked for me when I had similar problems).

Try using Heimdall for linux. The windows version depends on drivers while the linux does not need drivers.
Also try turning USB-debugging on. Some people report that this is needed for download mode, though I don't see how this can make a difference as the OS is not loaded when using download mode.
If this doesn't work I think you have a hardware problem.
EDIT: Don't use WM-ware etc for the above. I think an Ubuntu live CD will be fine.

Soft Brick can digging no recovery no driver

Hi my friends,
Wanted to update my P1000 but failed. Have read one article, using Zadig to write something to my phone, the first step was alright, but the second step, open windows terminal then run 'heimdall flash --kernel zImage', the blue tab as said didn't come out. Now when turn it on it is stuck at Samsung logo, could go to downloading modle but not recovery model. Both Odin and Kies cant recognise the phone no matter how much I have tried to set up the driver. Have been reading many articles on the web still couldnt find out the solution. Anybody could kindly help would be much appreciated.

Have tried 3,4 companies, none of them could fix it.
Send it to Samsung
I think it´s the only help u can get
You wanted to use Heimdall, so you used Zadig to install the drivers? That's fine, but if you then decide to use Odin, you'll need to install the Odin drivers first as Odin doesn't work with the Heimdall drivers. You can install the Odin drivers if you've installed Kies on your computer, it contains the driver Odin needs (on my computer it's in a folder called USB Driver). If you don't have installed Kies, installing it will install the drivers. If you don't want to install Kies, you should be able to find the package containing only the drivers on the Net.
After installing the drivers, reboot the computer. Then put the Tab in Download mode, connect it to the computer, and start Odin. With a bit of luck it will now recognise the Tab.

Thank you so much for your kindly reply. I tried to use heimdall but it keeps saying the package was wrong. Should I look for a correct package then use Heimdall to fix it? I have installed Kies, but it wont recognize my device, Odin doesnt neither. I just dont know how do I set up the driver, would you be kindly enough to give me a link? Lots of thanks.
Are the Heimdall drivers installed correctly? If so, and if you can find a Heimdall package that can be flashed, then that's good too. If you want to use Odin, and you haven't reinstalled the Kies drivers after using Heimdall, I found the Kies drivers in folder C:\Program Files\Kies\USB Driver, and the file was named SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe. Just run it, and reboot your computer. Then switch off the Tab, and press and hold the On switch and Volume Down button until it starts in Download mode (the screen with the yellow text). Start Odin, and connect the Tab to the computer with the USB cable. Hopefully it will see the Tab (display the COM-port of the Tab). If it recognises the Tab, you can flash a new ROM.

If I recall correctly..I read somewhere here..that, If you wanted to use odin after you install hemidal..there is something that you must do first (delete or run a commands or something) before you can use odin..usually the instruction manual comes with the installer..or installed with hemidal itself..but, I don't know.. Maybe I'm wrong.. Because I never use hemidal before..
(҂`☐´)︻╦̵̵̿╤── .:system:.
Odin will recognize your tab if you install the right drivers. On windows, it happens automatically, if you are connected to the net. As long as you can boot into download mode, you are safe. Dont worry, bricking a galaxy tab is very hard.

Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
I found a few links to do the ROM to Lollipop and/or KitKat, however, I am having issues with the tablet being recognize by Windows 8.1.
Drivers are not working, but even when I plug it in, I never even get an "unknown device" in device manager. Odin will not see it as well when in download mode and I have the original USB cable.
Added: I just tried a Win7 VM and no luck as well. Tablet not recognize at all, it does not show in "device manager" with or without drivers.
Any ideas anyone?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or else install samsung keys....or try another cable.
You also have to be in the download mode(volume down+power key) to use odin.
If all this does not work then try on some other system
Thanks! I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers multiple times, different versions, etc. Tried a Win7 VM on a MAC + machines with Win 8.1 and 10. None worked. Also tried different Odin versions, same result. And yes, all in download mode.
Yesterday after some research, I am leaning towards a bad cable. It seems some cables are good for charging (in this case it will charge) but not for data transfer.
Will keep you posted.
After dealing with a bad cable, I was finally able to install CWM as in this guide. However, as soon as I installed OMNI 4.4.4., it booted on TWRP 2.8.1. The touch is not working on screen nor the buttons while on TWRP. Cannot do anything.
- ADB shows the device in recovery
Can something be done? I was following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab/general/how-to-install-android-cm12-lollipop-5-t3018841
SOLUTION:
This sure was a learning lesson. For some reason, anytime I flashed "CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar" I lost the touch screen in Android and in CWM. So when flashing Omni 4.4.4, could not do anything in TWRP. After lots of reading and some trial/errors, this worked...
- Re-stock using firmware from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
- From stock 2.3.6, I flashed CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar with Odin
- Lost touch in screen
- Boot to recovery and in CWM, using volume and power buttons, I installed zip ROM called "HumberOS-v2.1"
- Boot to recovery, Got TOUCH back! Do all wipes.
- From CWM, installed Omni 4.4.4, which gave me TWRP (with touch screen working!) and the ability to install any 5.x or 6.x ROMs as specified here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab/general/how-to-install-android-cm12-lollipop-5-t3018841.

Hi! First of all my greetings to you!
I want to update my GT-P1000 too, but on starts has same issue: "unknown device".
Can you please give more detailed information about the difference between charging and data cable. I'll try to find correct cable on local shops.
Best regards.

HI, I had the same issue. maybe should try first to make sure you have the right drivers. look for samsung driver for mobile devices and try on different usb ports. I have 3.0 usb and 2.0 usb on my laptop and when I connect my tablet to the 3.0 ones it doent work! so I started using the 2.0 and went smooth
Yes, make sure the correct drivers are there and also try different ports and different PCs if you can. Your issue is a bit different to mine, as it was never shown as "unknown device" for me.
Just FYI... It took me a couple of days to finally research and find out there are different cables, some for charging only and some for charging and data transfer. In my case since I had the charge only cable, PCs never detected the tablet. New cable first try it was detected by Odin.
So, when you say your tablet has new life, how good are we talking? I flashed mine with Cyanogenmod 9.something a while back, and it's near to unusable. Would like to bring it back to life...
we all have different meaning for unusable. For me, the fact that it can have code 5.x or newer is a life saver.

It's just incredibly slow, to the point I've hardly used it.
