SM-N920C call quality issue - other party cannot hear me well - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought my note 5 8 days ago.
I started getting complains from other parties in the call that they cannot hear me well. the call starts normal but in a while, they say that my voice became very far... like i am not putting the phone close to my mouth. I am sure I am not blocking the mic with my finger or so.
shall I send it to return or there is some known fix?
Thanks,

I have sent the mobile for replacement... let's see

[Q] Voice sounds Distorted during telephone conversations?

Hi,
I have had my Samsung i9000 for about 2 months now and really like it, I think its a great phone...
I just made a call about an hour ago and noticed that when I pressed the call button to make the call, and heard the call/ring tone, it sounded very distorted (as if the speaker was buzzing? but distortion decribes it better).
I have made a few calls since then to check this and its happening all the time during calls now....
Whats weird is that when I play an mp3 & put it on loudspeaker, the sound is perfectly clear??
Does anyone have this "incall distortion" problem or experience it before?
Are there any know fixes for this?
Really appreciate all comments/help with this folks...
Thanks
Dave
Bump... Still have this problem folks, can anyone help me out here?
Had this with a new SGS and got it changed (within the 14 days period).
Yep, been contemplating sending it to samsung, complaints my voice is unclear too.
The earpiece noise I believe is from the antenna, faulty shielding perhaps.

Microphone doesn't work during voice calls - except on skype!

Hi all,
I'm afraid forum search was down so apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere.
When making or receiving normal calls, the person on the other end can't hear me. However, in skype calls, they can. This does not happen when I use the SIM in a different telephone.
I can't find any settings anywhere
I'm running a stock, sim-free N7000, UK, normal build with all the updates
Kernel 3.0.13-n7000xxlrk-cl811902
build imm76d.xxlrk
Android 4.0.4
Does anyone have any ideas what's up and how to fix it? It's surely not hardware as it works with skype.
it could be possible that the mic at the bottom is not functioning properly. check using any recorder
The voice recorder is working fine, as is skype. It's just voice calls that don't.

When in a call go to options and turn off voice enhancement or whatever it's called, then see if other person can hear you.

I tried to find something like that but for the life of me, I can't.
In settings/Call I get:
call rejection
set reject messages
call alert
call answering/ending
turn on proximity sensor
call forwarding
additional settings - > caller id, call barring, call waiting, autoredial, fixed dialling numbers
video call image
own video in received call
use call fail options
voicemail service
voicemail
And I tried the *#*#1927whatever for the debug menu, but pressing 5 for audio doesn't work - all the other submenus appear, just not audio.

No, not in the main settings, but when you're actually on a call, press the menu button, turn noise reduction off, see if the other person can hear you.

Noise reduction is set by default and uses a second mic to check for background noise tl cancel out any surplus sound. Problem is it often causes more problems than it solves, and it's possible one of your mics is broken which could cause total cancellation of sound.

I sent this back to Samsung UK for repairs - also sent back my headphones as the right earpiece never worked. Got them back today, both faults are still there. On top of that, the lens on the camera now has a big scratch down the middle. I've called Samsung who are going to take it in for repairs again, this time at another repair centre, but they won't lend me another 'phone in the meantime.
Seriously not impressed, this is the last time I buy a Samsung product. Shame, as I had already decided to get the Note 3 when it comes out. Looks like Apple just found a new customer, or HTC are getting an old one back
I spoke to the 3rd party company that Samsung used for the repair. Basically, they don't want to know.
They acknowledged that they understood the problem it went in with (microphone not working) but didn't test that aspect, therefore it passed their QA procedure.
They also tested the headphones and found them indeed to be faulty, but returned them unrepaired, still faulty.
They didn't give a toss about scratching the camera lens either. They said "Take it up with Samsung, not us"
Well, waiting for Samsung to send me another return jiffy bag for the second attempt at repair. If I don't get all THREE faults (the two it went in with plus the new one they made) fixed, I shall never, ever buy Samsung again. Shame, as I would have been first in line for a Galaxy Note 3 (as I was for the Note 1) and was about to buy a couple of big Samsung TVs too. Even a gesture of goodwill - like a bottom of the range handset to borrow whilst mine is being fixed - would have made a huge difference. Instead, I feel very much like Samsung treat all their customers like this. Not the experience I've had from Sony, Nokia or Apple, at least one of whom will benefit from my custom as a result of this.
OK, second time around one of the faults was fixed:
The microphone was replaced and now it work.
They didn't bother to even test the headphones and returned them still faulty. Nor did they attempt to do anything about the huge scratch THEY put on the camera lens. Oh, and they reflashed it down to 4.0.4 :|
Come on Samsung, get your act together.
Well, what I expect is the conclusion to this story:
Samsung customer service said they'd escalate this to the customer care team and I'd hear back from them within two working days.
I didn't hear back, so I called them. Customer Care had no record, but were very polite and listened kindly. However, ultimately, they can't/won't offer anything else than me sending it back a third time. Well, if they screw up twice in a row, why should I expect third time to be any different? I told them thanks but no thanks and I shall no longer be a samsung customer. I'm also buying a new TV this week - it was going to be a 60" Samsung, now it's going to be a different brand. I also won't be getting a Note 3, I'll get the next iphone or HTC with stylus instead. What a shame, they could have resolved this with a new pair of earphones and an apology.

Can't hear nor can other person hear during call?

So I'm on my 11th day of using the Nexus 6. I have 14 days to exchange the phone through T-Mobile if there's any issues. So far, no real hardware issues with the phone.
Here's my issue though. It's so random I can't figure it out. When I'm trying to call someone, the dialer dials the number, reaches the contact, but I can't hear the ringer and I can't hear anyone talking on the other line. The person on the other side of the line said when they answered the phone, there was no sound or voice from me - it was just dead.
The ONLY way I seemed to fix it before it does it again is to reboot the phone and calls will be normal. My question is, should I exchange the phone? It shouldn't be hardware, right? It sounds to me like a Lollipop issue but I don't see anyone else with this issue. Please help as I want to make up my mind whether or not I should swap for a new Nexus 6.
I'm running stock unrooted and locked bootloader. Thanks.
EDIT: I'm on T-Mobile too.
in for update please
same thing would happen to my wife's nexus 6 too. happens sporadically. don't know what causes it. doesn't happen often. hasn't happened with my nexus 6 yet. i have the blue 64gb and she has the cloud white 64gb.
notice the same thing happening with my father's nexus 4 a couple times too. only way to fix both phones is with a reboot.
thinking that it is a software issue and hopefully will be fixed with the next release of Android 5.1 since that is supposed to mainly be bug fixes.

Are you on T-Mobile? I ask because I think my issue was more an issue on T-Mobile's side. My friend has an iPhone 6 and he had the same issue - it was T-Mobile's cell tower. I'm not 100% sure this was the reason because I still had to swap out my Nexus 6 when I originally posted this because of hardware issues.
Same problem here, answer an incoming call I can't hear them, they can't hear me. Rebooting the phone fixes the problem but only for a few days , then same again.
I'm on AT&T and had this problem yesterday, got a VM from my daughter's school saying there was a 2 hour delay and couldn't hear it (ended up seeing it in my e-mail instead). Then I tried multiple times to make/receive calls same thing. Rebooting the phone fixed it. I wasn't sure if it was a bug since I rooted or not. I've only had my phone for 6 days.
This has been driving up the bloody wall. I hope they fix it soon! Anyone got any ideas?
Guys, if you have to reboot the phone to fix the issue, I would RMA or exchange the phone. It could be hardware since it's happening on different carriers in different areas of the world. I'm on my third Nexus 6 and everything seems to function fine now.
I actually fixed mine by blocking the noise cancellation speakers at the back of the phone below the camera. If the nexus 6p is in a case all you need to do is cover the noise cancellation hole in the case and you will be fine and if not in a case just cover it with a tiny sticker
Having similar issue on Nexus 5!
Problem: When I call or receive calls - I cannot hear anything --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or use a headset.
Furthermore when dialing I cannot hear the connection sounds --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or us a headset.
The others can hear me! So - the microphone works.
I can record and play audio & video - no problem! So the microphone and the speaker do work, somehow not always! Vibration works too.
----------FIXED
P.S: I just got it fixed: It turned out the earpiece speaker contacts were bend and the sticky tape did not hold the part down. After bending the contacts and taping the earpiece down (alternative a small piece of paper to force / hold it down did the job!)
The earpiece contacts only presses upward against the board contacts of the Nexus5 (and 6 likely)!
Currently: Nexus 5 / Nougat 7.1.1 / Nitrogen OS / rooted on TWRP 3.0.3.0 recovery

help mic.

help,
all of a sudden my mic on the phone is crap, i havnt droped it on the floor or anythiing like that.
but today it startet to make a very loud noise so the reciever of call couldnt hear a thing, tryed to restart the phone, it helped but only briefly,
is it a general problem?
or im just unlucky
regards
Hey man,
I just registered to say that I have the same problem. I own Nokia 8 and sometimes when I call with people they cant hear me at all or they can but they hear a loud noise. It looks like it is randomly occuring, I can call the same person 5 minutes later and they can hear me loud and clear all of a sudden.
Its very strange I think its the problem with microphone and I think its software related because I believe camera is using the same microphone for recording and that seems to be fine whenever I record a video.
Messenger/Viber/Whatsapp voice messages doesnt work sometimes tho so its linked. Hopefully this can be solved with via future updates but we should let Nokia know so they can sort this out.

Well in my case its much worse, I bought it from a guy who won it in a Facebook contest from Nokia that was held back in September I think. I am not sure if warranty applies to my phone, I hope so. But even if it did I would have to send it to UK and I am from different country

Tell them that it might be a software issue on Nokia end so I dont think they can do anything with it other than give you a new device.
same here
I found the same here. It is like interference. Since there are 3 mics, is it possible to disable one for testing?
Same here, happened today for the second time! BT and speakerphone modes are not affected, and only calls are affected - recording through an app does not produce the same issue. It's like someone is blowing air with full force into the mic!

Exactly like you describe, blowing air with full force into the mic.
But recently the problem somehow stopped and the mic is working BUT he audio is still damaged I believe because when I record a video there is interference in the background and no way its the same quality as advertised with OZO audio.
I also noticed that it stopped working after CHARGING the phone everytime, so I had to restart it after every charge, so maybe problem with electricty damaging the microphone ?

I have no idea what to do, will have to trash the phone for something else. It's still not working after hours of troubleshooting.
I managed to restore the mic functionality by entering safe mode (by pressing volume down during power up). We'll see how long will it last.
It's back. Nokia never again.

Nokia 8 Oreo. EDIT Ok found the thread - it Was specifically about Receiving calls, but might apply.
SEARCH xda nokia 8 questions & answers speakerphone
First question was 12 march 2018
Possible solutions:- 1 Full factory reset, setup Google account, don't install apps and Try it to see if solved.
2 Use Macrodroid app to turn off speakerphone 1 to 2 seconds into call (wow great app)
3 Press speakerphone icon twice at start of each call
4 Oreo 8.1 seems to have the problem less
Hope This Helps
I think I have solved this problem with my Nokia 8 which had been persistent for the last week.
I just took a household vacuum cleaner and cleaned out all the microphone slots and bingo the problem was solved!
Unfortunately I can't log in to the Nokia community forum to post there, I just get three endlessly pulsating dots, so if anyone can copy and paste this post over there it would be great.
Bad Mike.
I faced the same after last security upgrade. Today it became an issue for ANY call. And nothing I tried/found helped. (Soft resets, charging, Safe mode). Nokia 8 just generated noise like I would be staying on windy hill.
I've contacted Nokia via the Care app. It tooke ONE HOUR but in the end the operator helped me and I hope I've explained they should at least respond on their forum when the issue is reported almost a year. And their developers should know about issue that prevents using of phone for calling.
So the what worked for me part of answer:
- Settings>>Apps&notif>>See all apps>>Phone>>Storage>>Clear cache and Clear data
- Settings>>Apps&notif>>See all apps>>Carrier Services>>Storage>>Clear cache and Clear data
- perform soft restart (Power + Up buttons for 10 secs untill you see powered by Android)
Even before performing of the soft restart it worked again but it should be better to make it as well.
The microphone problem happened to me for the second time yesterday in a couple months. I tried the following, and it did NOT help. That said, the microphone returned to normal later in the day - it seemed to coincide with battery saver kicking as the battery become low.
I wish it would fail hard, so at least I can easily warranty the phone. At present, just when I give up and think about claiming warranty, the phone works again.

I am having problem with recording voice message with WhatsApp and any other voice recording apps.
I did everything and Nokia support member said it can be because of last security patch.
I can make calls and no problem but when I wanted to send voice message no success.
Please help me
Mine has been having the same problem for about a month now, had to start using my earphones for calls.
Using Google camera to record the audio is perfectly find, but stock camera and dialer have this noise.
None of the above has helped.
Considering sending it to the Nokia phone repair?

Question Redmi Note 10 Pro video call audio problem

Got this phone as a secondary device for our new business and so far I'm very happy with it for the price and my mum has just got it to replace her aging Honor V10. However I have noticed when on video calls with her, her voice sounded very muffled and like she was underwater and I could barley hear her on Whatsapp. However, when we did a voice only call on whatsapp she sounded fine. I have tested with my phone as well and exactly the same problem occurred which suggests that this is a common hardware limitation or software issue. Any advice?

it's totally software related problem, there's lot of bug and issues in this miui 12.5 rom, if don't have problem with this issues then wait for their miui update, or you can unlock bootloader then install custom rom in it, I did it and now work well for me. Install pixel experience rom

I'm facing the exact same issue what you're going through.
I brought redmi note 10 pro max on Saturday 7/8/2021 and I was checking all the specs and all.. All was truly good but the problem happened only on call.
1. My bf investigated that when he calls me. His voice I can't hear it beaks and for him, he is having issue with not hearing my voice.. It sound like my voice is breaking in middle of conversation, so I've to repeat my sentences and this is frustrating.
2. I checked the speaker quality, this is more worse than without speaker quality. Realme xt was indeed my ideal phone which I've to give to my sister. When I kept the phone on speaker, it sounded like I was speaking softly, and some of my words were cancelled. He said that the noise cancellation of redmi note 10 pro max when kept in speaker is also cancelling the my voice.it like can't distinguish between sender voice and background voice.realme is so much better. I really wish realme bring again glass body in 20 k range with AMOLED screen.
I checked even with my mom, she faced the same issue, without speaker worse and with speaker my voice was worst!
I requested for replacement from Amazon, it ws arriving next day.
While it comes, I did factory reset and phone service rest and check for latest update. It was smoothly working for sometime, hence cancelled the replacement which I made mistake. The issue again persists next day only with speaker.. Without speaker, anyone can listen carefully.
So I contacted customer care of Amazon for replacement again but they said they can't replace it.. The replacement is done only twice
1. Original phone replacement
2. Replaced phone replacement
Since I cancel that replace phone, I can only now get refund that is 4-6 working days.
This is so frustrating.
The main functionality of phone is calling, if that only purpose is lost, its like wasting money for nothing.

I think I have found the "solution" for this problem. Im currently on update 12.5.8. The work around for this problem is to reduce the video call volume to half or below. My girlfriend and I have been experimenting recently and found that when the video call volume is less than half , the other person can hear you much clearer. I hope this would help.

I have the same problem on Redmi Note 10 Pro on WhatsApp and Messenger.
I get no issues either with native ViLTE video call or Google duo video call.
Same issue with me as well
In July 2021, we bought two RMN10Pro phones in Pakistan. Both have this exact issue, it's so much torturing that I feel like throwing it out of the window whilst video calling. No one can hear what we say at the receiving end. So far, non of the official OTA updates fixed the issue, hoping MIUI 13 will, and are waiting for it eagerly.
My old trusty HTC 10 has a crystal clear call experience at the same time.

Hello 2022 February Here and I'm facing this problem. Speaker not clear when On voip calls. it's irritating.
Is it software or Hardware issue. I'm still on my warranty, have a couple of months.
What I should do ?
Can you please share what happened in your case ? Did your issue get resolved by replacing your device ? If yes, then I'll have to replace mine as we. still have a couple of months left.

Try going to the Xiaomi service center near you and discussing it with them. Report back to us their reply. If they say it is a hardware issue, get it replaced/repaired by them, if they say it is a software issue, also then ask them to fix it. IT IS INDEED VERY IRRITATING!, we have two of these with problems out of the box.
I came to Germany from Pakistan so one of them is with me and I can't go for warranty services, don't know if it has an international warranty. Others back home are not that tech-savvy, so I was looking for a possible solution. Plus, I can't get it replaced from here even if there was a possibility as it would lose the very costly PTA (Pakistan Telecom Authority) registration. The phone was purchased from a Pakistani market, so its IMEI is already registered.
If the upcoming MIUI 13 update doesn't fix it, I'd unlock the bootloader and go for a Pixel Experience ROM.
