[Q] Questions about hard brick (XT1063) - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, trying to be as brief as possible. I started out with stock 4.4.4, then unlocked bootloader and rooted it and such. I unrooted it, then updated it to 5.0.2 LP OTA. Decided that I didn't like Lollipop, so I restored it back to stock 4.4.4 KK using the official firmware for my device (retuglb). Everything flashed okay except for the bootloader, in which it gave me "Preflash validation failed", which supposedly happens when you try to downgrade from Lollipop to Kitkat. My phone is working just fine though. So now I want to upgrade to Lollipop again via OTA. What are my chances of hard bricking the device? I just read some posts here that people bricked their Moto G2 via OTA to 5.0.2. One guy restored to stock 4.4.4 then OTA'd to 5.0.2 and it bricked his device. Will that happen to my if I OTA update my device again? Please answer. Thanks.

Dont ota update
---------- Post added at 01:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:04 AM ----------
You can flash stock 5.0.2 by fastboot mode
Sent from my titan using Tapatalk

Oh no, don't OTA your phone this is just how I Bricked mine (XT1063), If you want to go to Lollipop again use the fastboot-script method, there is a lot of info about that in the forum.

So is it hard bricked or soft bricked? Are you still using the XT1063?

It is hard bricked and I never found a solution. I still have it but is worthless.

[Q] recovery for 4.4.3

Hi guys
i am on 4.4.3 in moto x and i received 4.4.4 for ota but i cant update because i unlocked bootloader and twrp in recovery,
how do i install 4.4.3,
i think install a recovery stock but i did not find recovery stock for 4.4.3 only for 4.4.2
or reinstall all stock for 4.4.2 make it downgrade.
what do you think?
You can likely find 4.4.3 firmware or even 4.4.4 and flash it manually from the links here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2923347
If you downgrade you could brick. If you successfully downgrade and take an OTA, you will definitely brick.
So not a wise choice. ?
Also, questions go in the Q&A section. For future reference. I'll ask this be moved. ?
---------- Post added at 10:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 AM ----------
This guide has sections for many tasks, including flashing firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
If you use the fastboot method, you could likely just flash your stock recovery once you get the proper firmware, and if you need to, mfastboot can flash the system image. Should be good for OTA then.
But again, if you find the 4.4.4 firmware for your model... Flashing it fresh manually is always my preference. ?
sorry i was think posted on Q&A,
so i install stock 4.4.3 and began wait for ota 4.4.4
or directly flash 4.4.4?
well, are not problem install directly 4.4.4 and blick mi phone?
***************
sorry i dont see the continuation answer
so, i try to find the 4.4.4 fw for mi motox and flashing via rsd??

If you find the proper 4.4.4 for your device, that's how I personally prefer to do it.
Be aware it'll wipe your device with RSD though. Apps, pics, music, whatever... Gone . So you can move anything you want to keep to your PC.
Using the fastboot /mfastboot method will not wipe your stuff. Pics, music and everything. As long as you don't erase or flash userdata. Apps still gone though.
Your choice. See the guide I linked for instructions.
Good luck!
And once on 4.4.4...you can not ever downgrade.
thanks, i didnt find 4.4.4 for mi device only 4.4.3 the same like i use today,
i can use rds for flash the 4.4.3 and wait for ota without any problems?
I'm pretty sure only the XT1053 aka TMobile/Developer Edition has a 4.4.3 firmware. Everyone else went from.4.4.2 straight to 4.4.4.
You can confirm by checking About and looking at firmware version it should end with Retail.en.US
If you just need the 4.4.3 recovery to flash and upgrade you can find it in the 4.4.4 OTA thread here under Reminders: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/xt1053-4-4-4-ota-update-zip-t2885484
If you want the 4.4.4 firmware you can find it in this discussion second post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/help-xt1053-half-downgraded-t2934605
Yup ?
Same warning, RSD will erase everything on your phone. It will be as it was the day you bought it.
thanks
@dtg7 a screenshoot
mi device has Retail.en.US.
so if i understand, i can put directly 4.4.4 from this post??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/help-xt1053-half-downgraded-t2934605
If you are T-Mobile, yup.
---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:42 PM ----------
Not another carrier.
really not, im from mexico and use telmex but really i dont why t-mobile.
I would wait for your firmware, unless someone confirms T-Mobile will work for you. If your radio doesn't work, or anything else, you'll be stuck on T-Mobile 4.4.4 and won't be able to then flash your stock 4.4.3 anymore.
Patience. You aren't really missing out on anything. ?
@Darth thank really i want update because the ota update appear and that's annoying, but well i try with 4.4.3 flash rsd and wait for ota in stock
well if i became a 4.4.4 for root only need supersu??
i question that if its convenient upgrade o wait in 4.4.3

System Files?

Greetings;
I just received my Moto X 1097 Canadian Variant and was
wondering if there are any files that I can get from a virgin
device before I attempt to root & etc.?
Or backup files that one day I might need to bring back my
device to life from Bricked status?!!
Thank you.
As long as you can get your hands on factory images, I wouldn't worry too much about system files. Otherwise, you should be able to find ways to make a system image; however that might require root or custom recovery.

Yes I usually unlock the Bootloader and Root, but since being a Canadian means not having a choice when it comes to "Communication Industries"
I couldn't buy a "Developer Edition" or any "32Gb" version for that matter!! Hence getting a XT1097.
I was wondering about downgrading, I understand once I upgrade to Lollipop, there is no way back, right? If that is the case, can I just ignore the OTA? And stay on KK?
Thank you.

Without factory images or a full backup, there is no way back. However, it is safe to downgrade as long as you don't try to downgrade the bootloader or partition table. You can ignore the OTA, but it will probably be annoying. You might as well upgrade.

I have a thread on this in the General forum. If you update to lollipop using Motorola Device Manager, you will have a copy of fastboot flashable Lollipop files on your computer. Search for my post on General.
If you want the fastboot flashable Kit Kat files, you can request them from Motorola. If they won't give them to you, then you can search to see if anyone has copies of them. This is for Telus right? You also can specifically ask if anyone has them, they may.
The other thing you can do is after you unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP recovery, is to make a nandroid of your stock system on kit kat and save it on your computer. Then flash back to stock recovery and upgrade to lollipop using MDM. Then flash TWRP recovery again and make a nandroid of stock lollipop, save it to your computer, then root.

First off are you sure your device shipped with kitkat? Double check on that.
Once you upgrade to lollipop, you cannot downgrade the bootloader or the partition table back to kit kat, but you should be able to downgrade the kernel and the system back to kit kat w/o any issues. Idk about trying to downgrade the radios.

Thank you for your reply.
I just turned it on for the very first time! And I can confirm that it is on KK.
I like your solutions and will email Motorola tonight for the KK files. I will however upgrade to Lollipop via MDM so that I do have a copy of the "Fastboot Flashable Lollipop files".
Any suggestion on Rooting method? Also to copy the Nandroid to Pc, do I pull it with ADB? or just copy them from internal storage? And lastly I think once I upgrade, doesn't make sense to downgrade with so many complications, eh?
Thank you again.

Is your phone Telus or Wind mobile?
The original kitkat files for both can be downloaded no problem.
The 5.0.1 lollipop image for Telus can also be downloaded.
You can safely downgrade from Lollipop to Kitkat as long as you unlock your bootloader.

You can read it above, you can do it if you are on 5.0.2. If you are on 6.x you have to be careful not to downgrade the bootloader and never ever update via OTA!
(Infos about downgrading android versions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/xt1063-t3018818
But if you´re on 5.0.2 you should be on the safe side.

You can read that in the link given above:
Lollipop 5.0.2 to Kitkat 4.4.4 : If your bootloader version is 4882/4883(Lollipop Bootloader), you need to make some changes while flashing the ROM manually.
- Download Kitkat 4.4.4 Factory Firmware image zip.
- Unzip the contents.
- Delete the motoboot.img file inside the extracted contents..
- Do not type "mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img" while flashing the Kitkat 4.4.4 firmware image manually.
4. If you downgrade your bootloader version i.e flash a 4883 Lollipop bootloader on your existing 4886 Marshmallow bootloader, your phone will be hard-bricked / permanently dead. Therefore follow the instructions above carefully. I am not responsible for dead phones.
You´ll find a lot of infos about that in the general section. Read all that carefully, downgrading stock is a tricky thing.
I personally would flash a custom rom.

That´s right. But never upgrade via OTA again then because OTA doesn´t care about bootloaderversion and will hardbrick your phone.
If you down/upgrade stock rom you´ll have always to spare out boot.img (if you do it by using the commands one by one or if you do it by script. You have to delete the flash boot.img command out of the script/tool then).
This is only relevant for stock roms, custom roms doesn´t have this problem.

That´s what´s written in the "[GUIDE] [Titan] [MM, LP, KK] [Unlock + Root + Backup + Restore + Downgrade" thread and that´s what I know about that.
motoboot.img is the bootloader and if you don´t touch it you should be on the safe side.
I personally am on custom roms since 5.0.2 and have never flashed/downgraded/upgraded a stock rom again so I have no personal experience.
If you wanna be 100% sure ask @SharkcpN, the one who wrote that thread.
You can safely downgrade by skipping motoboot.img while flashing.
Once you downgrade to a lower android version, do not install any further OTA updates of higher Android version else it might lead to hardbrick. After downgrading, go to Settings > Apps > MotorolaOTA > Disable it
If you want to update to a higher android version, flash the higher android version ROM via fastboot mode only.

million-dollar idea = hard brick bootloader

I watch all the forum ... and nothing .... It strikes me the idea that solving this problem can handle only champion. I am not and I tried on all methods.
Why XDA no solution ??? XDA's largest community of Android developers I know. There must be a solution, and I want to find him here!
Help if you can, even God
thanks
at least tell us, what seems to be a problem? As for now, it sounds like you're going to pay a milion-dollars for someone who will hardbrick your bootloader. Am I right? Send it to me, I'll hardbrick with my hammer for that cash.
I think his problem is that is Bootloader IS hardbricked and NOT that he wants it hardbricked.. BTW I have a similar problem. I installed Android 6.0 on my xt1068 using The Indian soak test update. I then decided I wanted to downgrade back to 5.0.2 and my phone is now dead completely... So yeah an answer would be nice here. Thanks
One should try to install only system, recovery, radio partiotions.
Every update Moto updates fs structure, changes bootloader and radio. These are critical and should not be installed.

Rebooting problem after trying to update to Marshmallow

I got a notification that my phone was able to update to Marshmallow today so downloaded the update and set the installation on its way. The problems start here, when rebooting after starting the installation it boots into TWRP, I'd previously rooted my phone but unrooted it after a while, though all I did was select the unroot option on SuperSU and didnt relock the bootloader or anything like that.
The TWRP is v2.8.7.0, and my Moto G is a XT1072 version and currently running 5.0.2.
Im tempted to factory reset but worried that might brick my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

You can´t update via OTA with a custom recovery like twrp installed. You have to be on stock recovery and the latest full unrooted non-modified stock firmware. Unlocked BL is no problem and doesn´t matter.
In most cases just unrooting and flashing back stock recovery is not enough because there still could be small changes which will make the OTA installation fail.
Nevertheless you can try that or you flash the latest 5.0.2 stock firmware.

Anex to words of Wolfcity, if you want to update via OTA you will need to install stock recovery and stock rom of LP, there is a procedure with a toolkit that you can easily find in general forum. The tool kit will help you to back again at the beginning. Nevertheless, why use stock firmware with a lot of cool roms to flash? [emoji4] [emoji106]
