Charging/Battery Packs - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone. I'm been curious about this for sometime now, but could never really find an answer. Are there any negatives to charging your phone with a battery pack, on your PC, or with a USB cable other then what was supplied with your phone? I know Samsung states not to charge your phone through the computer, but its something I do all the time at work. I also have two battery packs I regularly use to charge our phones on the go. Any thoughts?

There are no negatives at all.
But if you want to use the "fast charge" feature it will only work with the phone's original charger.
Also I never heard or seen Samsung saying not to charge the phone using the computer's usb.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

Thanks for the reply. Was just curious.
On Samsungs site for Note 5 under best practices for charging, it says to charge using a wall outlet, not a computer.

Can Milestone charger be used for OB?

I'm about to use a Moto Milestone 1 charger for OB but I'm afraid that it may harm the phone. Both phones are listed with MicroUSB 2. Any tips?
thanks
Don't worry.. it will work Ok, but OB charger has 1000ma, if you use another charger that has let's say 500ma (like USB) it will take 3 hours to charge the phone instead of the regular 45 minutes!
I use a samsung cable directly from USB, the car USB port, a samsung 5530 charger, a LG optimus one charger, and they all worked, with various degrees of effectiveness!
The most useful one is the car's USB port that, even if it cannot keep up with the GPS (it charges slower than the battery drains), it can keep the phone running with 10% loss every hour with screen activated and GPS at the same time! The problem is that I hate radio and don't use CD's that much, and usually end up with the phone depleted before I reach the destination!
Thanks man! Ok I'll check that "ma" thing. BTW is it written on the battery or charger?

Both places; battery specify working and standby V and mA, charger specify the V and mA provider
So you can use almost every different charger if the specs are the same, but be aware of this: don't use a charger with less mA since it can burn the charger
Ma - miliamps.
How many milliamps in 1 watt/volt? The answer is 1000.
I assume you are converting between milliampere and watt/volt.
I never had a burnt charger by the way, that would be very strange considering that the phone is accepting 500ma from the start (that is the USB output on any PC), and I even saw chargers with a power of 2W (SUPER FAST CHARGERS). The Motorola chargers are 850 ma usually, so it should work quite good!
Indeed, it's very strange to have a burnt charger and we don't need to go into an electrical discussion but that happens because of 2 possible things, very high-peak of voltage or prolonged use of under-voltage

Thanks. Printed on my Moto charger is 850mA so I'll rather use it for my OB next time.
BTW, currently I'm using a replacement charger for my OB with a name "super charger" printed "4.5v - 9.5v 800ma"
It's charging at normal duration in fact I'm using it for days. The only problem is that my OB touchscreen freaks out if I use it while that charger is connected. It's obvious when I run the multitouch testing app because touch points run all over the place. Touchscreen goes back to normal if I disconnect the charger. I tested that "super charger" to my milestone and the same abnormal thing happens to the screen. What causes it?
Probably it's something to do with high voltage... I'd avoid using it if something like that happens to my phone..
Usually the USB style chargers are pretty standard... the speed with which they work are strongly related to the power (Amperes) they provide, the voltage "should" be pretty standard!

Battery experts say to try and use a charger that's rated half the power of the battery.
So for a 1500 mAh battery, a charger of 850 mAh should be a better option than a 1000 mAh one.
Yes, the 1000 mAh charger would charge the battery faster than the 850 mAh one but it will decrease the lifetime of the battery faster.
Just for be able to post new thread. Sorry.
Hello, I don't want to start a new thread so I'll ask here.
The charger that came with my OB seems to be damaged. It was working properly until last last night. My phone detects the charger but it won't charge. Got powermax turned on and it automatically turned off when I connected the charger, so I know my charger does have issues.
Tried banging the charger last night, connected it to phone and started charging, woke up to see that it stopped charging 2 hours ago. It didn't even fully charge my phone. Now I'm charging it with my pc via the USB cable. I noticed that the touch screen goes wild when I use it while connected with the USB.
Now, I'm planning to buy a Galaxy S2 charger. Is it safe to use? S2 and OB has almost the same battery capacity so I'm considering it. Any other suggestions? OB ain't popular here in the Philippines so finding accessories is a real pain in the a**.
Fitted a Corby 2 charger and it seems like they use Mini-usb too. Haven't tried charging with it though.
My original charger also died... Now I use the one that came with my bluetooth headset
So I guess using the OB charger on other stuff is okay too. USB is always ~5v.
You need to test the charger with something else to be sure, though.
I had the same touchscreen freaking out problem with my old LG KS20, whenever I charged it. Like it was shorted or something. So it maybe a problem with the phone itself.

So, you agree that I use a Galaxy S2 charger? I think it would be fine since my friend with an S2 used my charger to charge his phone and it went well. I'll ask him to buy me one tomorrow. Tnx for reply
Ok kabayan, don't forget to share here the result after u try gs2 charger. I too am looking for safe alternative to my milestone charger.
Standard port - standard voltage
Don't even bother, if it has a micro USB it should be fallowing the same standard as USB for charging (5V)...
Of course test the charger for any adverse side effects like screen flickering or short battery life, and don't use it if something like that occurs, but because of the standardized voltage and the fact that usually phone chargers have between 500 - 1000 mA, 99% of chargers work...
I still haven't found any incompatible charger for my phone and I don't even buy a phone if it has a non standard Charging/Data Port... it's just stupid... so no Iphone for me!

Hello guys! I'm here for an update. For the past week I've been using a Corby 2 charger. And guess what, it works just fine! only downside is it won't charge it up to 100% (usually gets to 99% upon unplugging). And it charges the phone a little slower than the original charger. I always let the phone overcharge overnight to have 100% battery.

Slow Charge In Notification Center

Hi, I recently bought the htc one international version.
I installed android revolution hd ROM and the elemantalx kernel.
While charging, I am having a notification stuck in status bar "Slow charging, to charge faster, use the original charge"
How can I resolve this issue ?
Thanks
try to use another charger and see if it disappears. maybe you need a new one. if it's not related to the charger, try to flash another rom and see if it's still there. don't know what else you could do..

You're hooked up to a weak charger. You get that message when the phone can't draw all the current it needs.
I received the same message as the OP as i use my notebook to charge my One though i have only see it once.
John.
I'm having what sounds like the same problem. Plugging in the charger gives me a pop-up message, and then there's a permanent message in the notification area. Does anyone know exactly what is causing this? The charger I'm using is supposed to be able to deliver 2A: if the problem is that actually it can't even deliver 1A then I need to get it replaced; if it's the phone being stupid then it would be helpful to know why it's doing it.

Surely any modern smartphone limits the current that it draws to what it can use?
But actually I wasn't proposing to use it to charge my phone regularly, anyway, I just hooked it up as a test. What I actually want it for is charging an external battery which is capable of drawing a full 2A from a mains charger. If the reason I'm getting the message is because the charger can't deliver even 1A, then I need to know that!
It would also be handy to know what the cause is if I ever do buy an extra charger for the phone... so I can avoid running into the same problem then.
I like my gadgets, i have ordered one of these usb adapters, it show`s the amount of power your phone/device is pulling from the usb port/adapter it has 5 bars showing up to 5 watts or 1000ma.
They are $19 each + $5 for international posting.

John.
HTC assumes the thing on the end of a USB cable can deliver 0.5A unless the data pins are shorted, then it assumes 1A.
I.e., if a charging device doesn't connect the data pins, the phone will only draw up to 0.5A.
I bought another usb adapter, that has the pins shorted inside, you just plug it into your usb adapter and then plug your normal usb cable into it, so you get maximum charge rate from any usb port.

Is that a full-size USB connector, or micro-USB? Can't really see from the picture.
It`s full size, no other adapter needed.

That won't help me with my present situation, as the charger has a hardwired micro-USB plug and nothing else.
Interesting for other situations, though.
If there were something similar that was micro-USB to micro-USB that might work.

It`s a pity you cannot enable/disable the qualcomm quick charge as i prefer a slow charge as fast charging produces more heat and is bad for the battery life as fitting a new battery is an return to htc job, I have heard it`s about a 1/3 faster?.
John.
Yeah it's much faster now after the 4.2.2 update. And also, before the update my phone used to charge in usb mode in both my apple chargers and my extra battery packs. Now, it charges on ac mode, thankfully. This leads me to believe that qualcomm quick charge is turned on because in their website one of the features of this is power source detection (it knows whether it's a usb source or ac).

It's per a support statement from HTC that I found the first time I got that warning:

Apparently it's trying to activate quick charging, and if it can't, you get that notification.

"Fast charging" is simply charging at the AC rate via USB. It's no different than having it plugged into the wall.

usb charger doesnt provide enough voltage going in to charge it while you are using it. if you notice, the regular n6 charger charges the phone while putting in nearly 2500mV(n5 only saw 1200mV max while charging). so, if you wont use the device, after hours on tbe charger the usb charge will finally charge it. but if you are using at the same time, more current goes out of the n6 then goes into it.

overnight, you can leave it connected to usb, but yea, use the original charger for a fast charge. now a few kernels do enable fast charge over usb, but itll still be quicker to use the regular wall charger.

Mine only fast charges when the screen is off OR powered off completely. Both have easy ways of checking whether it's working. The ticker will appear when plugged in when it's on (the one you've seen a million times) but when the phone is powered off under the battery icon is a lightning bolt icon. That only shows up when it is fast charging. Just tried it to confirm. If it's slow then you could try another micro USB cable. Could be worn out or try a different outlet. There are several USB power testers you could try as well. Good luck!

Hey, no problem! I have been ordering a few chargers for my gf to enable fast charging on her lg g4 since the manufacturer didn't ship with one. Only one of my fast chargers worked on hers. Had to test with all the charging apps etc. so I'm up on all the fast charging knowledge lol! Just a FYI, aukey brand chargers seem to work on all various devices with quick charger tech. I got a wall & car charger for 20 bucks via slickdeals in case you need any extras. Amazon with their code. You do have to order them separately to get 10 off though. Well hope it all works out!

The Definitive Answer on Charging a HP Touchpad

Hello,
First time poster long time reader.
I have read 20 billion forums where people continually say that "everything charges a touchpad" and "nothing charges a touchpad but original charger"
we are 5 years after launch and crash. Judging by forum activity people still have and use their touchpads.
what charges a HP touchpad? Do you need a special cable? Do you need a special charger? can some one after all this time give the definitive answer?
I have read through many posts on this forum and multiple others and it seems this question has not be clearly answered.
im looking for a "only a hp charger" or "500v and 90a will do it" or "connect nipples to car battery and furiously tongue the charging port".
to understand why I am asking this question. I dont have my original charger and i dont want to pay $40 for an american charger ( I dont live in America) I use a 5v 2.1a phone charger and it gives me the "to reliably charge" screen.

Some are more picky than others, but I charge mine with any 5v, 2a charger. Time to fully charge varies, and if you use it while charging, it will not store much in the battery. Put it to sleep and let it charge until full.
So its more picky,
I am currently using a Belkin wallcharger that outputs 12w 2.4A. I have left my tablet plugged in and off for the last 24 hours and it wont turn on other then to tell me that to reliably charge I need the original charger. I have KK 4.4.4. Is this a typical charge time for these in other users experiances? how do we get it to charge with out an original cable or wallcharger?
I too would like to get to the bottom of this. I use the original charger and cable and from a dead battery takes a goot 15hrs before it boots up. The only indication its charging is the home button LED that flashed back and forth. I've tried 3rd party chargers and none work. I've tried 3rd party cables and none work.

It is a well-known fact that allowing the battery to fully discharge is problematic at best, disastrous at worst. None of the chargers are reliable when this occurs. The simple answer is don't let the battery go below about 10% before recharging, or you may not recover your tablet without having to debrick it.
This has been my experience:
Any old charger and cable will charge a Touchpad so long as the battery isn't completely dead. If the battery is completely dead, then there is a way to get enough power to turn it on without needing the original charger or cable. You simply plug it into the USB port of any computer and let it sit. Let it sit for a long time. I let mine sit for a day before trying to power it back on.
YMMV, but I've had success with that method.

You are right about the many discussions about what chargers work with the TouchPad and which ones don't. I have sat in on many of them as well as done some testing of my own. The rule of thumb is it is best to use the official HP TouchPad charger. HP for some reason made the charging circuits proprietary on the TouchPad so that if you use a third party charger rated the same as the official one, it will charge but only at the lowest rate of 500mA. You can also charge the TP from a PC usb port, but again it is rated at 500mA. The catch is the TP uses more than 500mA when awake, so to use one of these methods, the TP has to be put to sleep or be turned off and will charge very slowly. That being said, you may find a third party charger that will charge the TP at the higher rate, but they are rare. At one time I was aware of a user who was modifying USB cords so that you could use a third party charger. He used to have a thread on RootzWiki forum, but that that forum was pretty much destroyed by spammers and his thread was lost. He had instructions with pictures and parts lists. Also, keep in mind, any good USB cable will work with the original HP charger. It's the modification that he was making to the cable that tricked the TP into thinking it is connected to a real HP charger.
However, I did find this post from a fellow that knows the mod one needs to make to get a third party charger to work with a TP:

I have confirmed all that you have said and now know this to be the definitive answer, since OP I have purchased 12 chargers advertising different automatic charge regulation features such as belkin "smart" chargers, none would charge over 500ma which of course as we now know is not sufficient to use the TP and takes days to charge, not what i would call functional.
I made a messy hack job charger.. im definitively not great at that and between an accident prone wife and 2 small children, my end result wasnt good enough to let charge alone next to the couch or something.
Finally, while i did all this I had a HP charger on order with an American wall plug ( i live in western Australia so different plug and long postage time) this charger works as expected and in my research was the only functional way to charge the TP
THANKS TEAM. we got there in the end.

12 chargers! Holy Cow!!!! I do remember that the guy who was building these cables purchased a USB connector and used surface mount resistors what he could fit inside the metal shell of the connector.

Definitive answer... maybe...? 5.3+ volts and 2.0+ amps...?

In seeking the same answer as you I seem to have stumbled upon a couple options that explain the answer...
Here I wanted to post a "Screenshot of HP forum answer regarding HP Tablet charger reqs" but the forum bots won't allow it...
So the screenshot the i wanted to include above will not post properly, i'll explain... the screenshot showed a h30434.www3.hp com/t5/Tablets-and-Mobile-Devices-Archive-Read-Only/Need-a-charger-for-my-HP-10-2101-Tablet/td-p/5962461" post on the HP support forum of someone asking basically the same question... specifically about the HP 10 2101 Tablet... forum user "Wyrenut" (has over 16,000 posts on the HP support forum) states confidently;
You can find one at pretty much any computer/electronics store, or online at amazon comIt just needs to be rated for a tablet - providing at least 2.0 amps of DC current and at least 5.3 volts, and a micro-USB port on the tablet end."
This seems to check out thus far in this quest for tablet power because I was able to find in my adapter bin a 5.1 volts DC @ 2.4 amp charger with a micro-USB end and after hours of being plugged in, and that has failed to charge an HP TouchPad 32GB I recently acquired without a charger. So I am currently seeking an adapter that will satisfy "Wyrenut's" stated requirements for an HP Tablet charger and once I get my hands on one, we will have the definitive answer and I will followup on this thread as well.
Useful infos to include in the definitive answer...?

You Must Be of my Ilk!
I like posting to moldy old Touchpad Threads too!
Would love to see what you find out if they actually go to 2 AMPS although I have 8 actual TP chargers and 6 docks.....the chargers have been known to fail after a time.

Do you know where I could obtain a TouchPad original charger? What charger exactly am I looking for? (I have never seen a real TP charger IRL)
Maybe you have some tips for what keywords I should search for on eBay?

Yeah, I found the Touchstone charger as well. I think that's probably the best choice, because not only is it pretty cheap and gets me a stand, but it also comes with the original barrel charger required for the proprietary HP charging circuit to use the full 2 Amps. (So I assume I could then use that barrel charger with a micro usb cable as a wired charger if I didn't want to use the wireless stand)
Still, I'm impressed a 2011 device has wireless charging. If I do buy that Touchstone, I'll probably just use the wireless charging for convenience.
Anyway, I first need to get this thing to boot. I have the (seemingly) common dead battery issue. I received this tablet from a friend for free, he said it was barely ever used and then put away in storage. The tablet is in like-new condition, so I believe him on that.
I've plugged it into a 5V 2A (10W) USB charger from a Moto G Pure, and it's currently alternating between two lights on the home button. (And has been doing so for the last 8 hours or so). I'll leave it overnight as well.
At that point, I assume I should start trying power vol and home button combos to try to turn it on? Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to get this tablet to boot?
Once I can get it to turn on, I'll probably look into getting the original charger (that Touchstone). Until it works though, I don't really want to invest $12 to $16 into this thing and then be left with a useless wireless charging stand.
I assume using a non original charger for now shouldn't be much of a problem apart from the charging being slow. It'll still charge, after all, even if at 500mA.

The HP Touchpad in 2011 had features not even available in devices at this moment in 2022.

Any charger providing exactly an output of 5.3 volts 2.0 amps will work, it does not need to be the original HP charger but with the same specs.

There is no special trick, just charge it in a warm room temperature above 80F with the right charger. Lithium batteries does not charge well in cold.

After it boots and is 100% charge the Tablet can be charge with any charger, but always keep it plug in ( charging ), never let it discharge.

Ok, well, I don't have anything at 5.3 exactly, only 5.0V. I guess I'll go and buy a touchstone charger so I get the stand and barrel charger, so that it has the correct output. I really didn't think 0.3V would make much of a difference though.
Anyway, once I plug it into the original charger, how do I know when it is ready to turn on? Will it just turn on by itself, show a charging icon, or something else?

It could probably work, give it a try.
1. LED light blink from side to side. ( The tablet's battery is depleted, but taking charge ( awake ). Leave it until it boots, it could take a week.
2. Second stage ( a battery sign with a red line under it ) will show on the screen.
3. It will boot.
Look at this guide for the info.

Alright. Mine is blinking left/right, so I'll leave it until I see anything on the screen. (I shouldn't need to touch any buttons, right?)

Welp, I just bought a TouchStone. The eBay seller was surprisingly fast at replying to my offer, so now I have an in-box TouchStone charger arriving in a week for $13 and free shipping . Not bad.

Great !
The TouchStone for some reason charge faster and better that USB.
Always keep the Tablet charging, never let the battery drain.
Have FUN!
