Marshmallow Root? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Hi all, I updated my phone with the 6.0.1 OTA the other day and it ended up bricking my phone and I had to factory reset and lost root access. Is there a working root method for marshmallow? I haven't been keeping up since I originally rooted the phone last year. Sadly, all I want to do is to be able to copy a new ringtone to the notifications folder, but I need root access for that.

Hi there. You don't need root for custom ringtones. Put your sounds under the folder "Ringtones" and they will populate on their own under notifications.
As for root possibilities, it's very unlikely for our verizon flavored s6. I've been monitoring this forum for a while and I love our little community but I don't see active developers...

Thanks, I added the mp3 to the ringtones folder and I see it under the ringtones settings, but I want to use the sound for notifications, hangouts, groupme, whatsapp etc... I think I either need to place the file in the notifications folder, or I need the .ogg file instead of .mp3

Ahh, found a solution. Downloaded a ringtone app (zedge) which luckily had the sound I wanted and was able to install it.

Nice! Alternatively, you can create a folder called "Notifications" and put your files in there. It might already exist.

[Q] [PLEASE HELP] Custom text ringtones???

Hi,
I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out how to use my music as a custom ringtone for my text notifications on my Samsung Galaxy S I9000.....
Can someone please help me?
Well you could use this app http://www.appbrain.com/app/ringdroid/com.ringdroid
OR the way I do it is just put files directly into the directory using root explorer *must be rooted* The path is system/media/audio/notifications
Text as SMS? Open text messages app and press menu, then select settings and scroll to ringtone.
You need musics in those directories as explained above.

thanks...the funny thing is, i had ringdroid all along but didn't realize it had that option....(lame, i know)
but i think i like the root explorer way since i usually make my ringtones on my computer..

Custom Ringtones for Contacts

Am I missing something? Can I not add a custom right tone to a contact? I just switched over from my Droid X today and I came across this issue.

I believe the way to do it is if you open the Contacts app then click on the contact and when it shows their info, hit the menu key then select options and it should then give you the option to set a custom ringtone for that contact.
I've tried that but the only choices that are available are the stock ringtones that came with the phone I'd like to use an actual song from my music library as that contacts ringtone.

I noticed the same thing! I like to have different songs for different people, i don't want to be limited to the lame generic ringtones, i want Beck and Death Weather and QoTSA!
I just upgraded from a Droid X today and I able able to add custom ringtones to contacts then now on DB it doesn't seem to give you an option to do that I'm surprised

Might try adding the music files to a folder named "Ringtones" on the sd card. It worked for my portal 2 ringtones.

Files placed into: /Internal phone storage/media/audio/ringtones are usable as ringtones. If the folders already exist, just move your files there. If the folders aren't already there, you can use the pre-installed Files application to create them. From with the app, click Menu then New Folder.
Then do this keeping in mind that it needs to be done from the View Contact screen, not the Edit Contact screen:

I figured it out: I opened the music app then long pressed the song I wanted as a ring tone. The go to the contact select options and when the list of ring tones opens looks for the song title and hi-light the song done. Thanks to all of you for helping!!!!

I had some songs and alert tones that I put on the external SD card, and the system found them and added them to my list of available ring tones without me having to do anything.
have had no issues with custom ring tones and alerts.
Thanks. That also worked for the notification ringtone.

Check out "Rings Extended" in the app market. Once installed it operates in the background. Assign a ringtone as normal, but when you do you get the option to use Rings Extended. It will let you choose any music on your phone.

Custom notification sound

Hi all, just a quick one, does anyone know how to set a custom text tone? I've got an mp3 file, I've messed around with file explorer and placed it in media, audio, notifications and also created a notifications folder but it's still not being recognized in the settings as a choice for notifications.
I'm not rooted.
It's odd because I can see the Facebook pop sound in the notifications folder I'm trying to put this file in.

Ps-original file I'm trying to use is a voice memo if that makes any difference

I downloaded some sounds off zedge and had to move them to the /media/notification folder and they did not show up, after restarting my device they were there.

someone should really explain this
Same issue on my Verizon S6. I feel dumb that I have spent 30 minutes trying to access this app.
Same here. Why cant we do download booster as well? Carrier killing a good phone.
Found it. You have to put the usage manager widget on the home screen then click on battery and it will take you to the usage manager.
The usage manager is not the same thing as the smart manager.
360 security app from playstore does the same thing.
hmmm I see that the app is on the phone, maybe someone can tell us how to unhide an app as it seems to of been Hidden rather than removed for some reason by Verizon and ATT.
ooooh, I think I see why ATT and Verizon Hid this app. It is installed at Ring 0 , Same level as Knox. Hmmm wonder if we found our Exploit Point of access for Root.
What do you mean it's installed at Ring 0? How can you see that information?

This is more a windows referance but a program that operates at ring 0 has full operation permissions that allow it to modify read/right code that effects base operation of the device. In otherwords Root access without user permission. If you open up the Application manager, Settings>systems>Storage>used space>Applications. Then scroll Down and press on the app it shows you the App info, usually used to Force stop or Unistall manually as you'll notice most Bloatware Unistall command is greyed out and doesn't work.
But anyways if you scroll down, It'll show you Permissions the App has and is allowed to do, and a nice little note by Samsung telling you this app works at administration level at the same level as Knox and a reason being so it doesn't use a lot of memory. Basically the Smart Manager App has Permissions to pretty much do everything on the phone.
Ps. Looking over the apps I decided to look at Usage Manager the app that att seems to have replaced it with. and it has no where near the Permission level that Smart Manager has. So it seems ATT did not like that app and used theres instead. with them Bootloader locking and Root locking the Device, I Wonder why.
I was looking at the feature.XML and there is a thing in there that has disable smart manager/ disable anti malware set to true...of course without root we can't change that line to see if that bring access to it back

Should I be able to view the main folder like this? I'm using root explorer btw
Edit: not sure if pictures posted, but using root explorer, I can view the main folder and almost all system folders. In system/app there are quite a few apps that have permissions like smart manager. I was surprised to see the permissions on the kiosk app.

yah its really mind boggling the permisions these simple apps have. guess when something is installed at root level in factory they just give em all permissions and hit next.
Can USB debugging be used to maybe change one of these apps and push it back? I figure you can't because it's r/o, but there are a lot of other high level folders that are r/w
