Over the last few hours, according to the built in mobile data usage meter, android OS has used nearly 1GB of data and keeps climbing after rebooting. In a normal month android OS doesn't even appear in the list of things that use data. Is there a way of identifying precisely what has gone rogue and deal with it. This is the second time in several months this has happened. Obviously if this keeps happening I'm going to get hit with overage charges for data. But I don't even know where to begin looking to identify the cause. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Try this. Go to settings > backup and reset, and then turn off everything under google backup.

I got a similar thread in the g4 q a. Restrict background data. if ure like me use exposed look for module or in post for link to disable the restr data notifacation. I am try to figure this one out my os uses ridiculus amounts of data and i do not have any syncs or backups that run. The restrict. Seems to have stopped it but some apps wont work properly. For say i use flip clock widget and weather wont update unless i turn off restriction. We have a few looking into this i get 1.5 gigs of data a month and 80% is used by os
For me, Android OS is my biggest data hog, more than Chrome and Maps. I am interested in whether anyone can pinpoint the part of the phone using so much mobile data.
But more important question, why does Android hide specifics from us? What is the point of hiding all the details under the umbrella term "Android OS"? It would be awesome if we could see a breakdown of what components make up the total, so we could see whether something was acting up.

Thats what im working on. Like i said ive almost eliminated it with restricted data but thats just a bandaid. Mine was fine till about a month ago or so and went nuts using data
lg g4 uses data secretly.. :S i am on zv6, even time i clear cache, it download software update secretly, even after disabling all the apk which are responsible for lg g4 upgrade. upgrade notification on lg g4 is sent by Google Play services, not an OTA apk message. I have to disable notifications from google play services or system upgrade message won't go..
so everytime we clear cache, it wil download system upgrade without your acknowedgement, no matter you are on 3g or 4g or wifi... and it wont even show upgrade notification if cause we turned it off..
i made a dummy update.zip and immutable it. everytime i clear cache i do that first.. now i dont see any rogue usage of data..

Hi, I have had my note (gt-n7000, all stock, not rooted) since December and have kept an eye on my data usage using data counter widget and NetTraffic widget. On gingerbread everything was fine, very little background data, monthly usage well below 100MB (I'm on wi-fi 90% of the time), my battery usage was not great but no cause for concern at 8-10 hours standby.
Since the update to ics I have had battery issues, 4-5 hours standby max and I think this is caused by a constant 1kb/s connection every second. I have somehow managed too use 150MB in 10 days without even using my phone on 3g (standby only for average.... 1 hour a day!? ish). The phone doesn't get as hot as it did when ics first installed.
Onavo said Facebook was using high data so I have uninstalled it to test. RadioOpt Traffic monitor 4.1 shows "System Traffic" as extremely high.
I have tried:
Rebooting the phone.
Killing tasks/clearing memory.
Force stopping every process to see if that would identify the app/service causing the extra background data.
Disable sync.
Disable Samsung account.
Uninstalled Samsung push service.
Launch TWlauncher and remove all widgets and pages, I run ssLauncher.
I hadn't noticed the data usage when I first installed ics, it was a probably a week before I did. I don't think I have many new apps that would do this although something may have changed when an app updated.. but then wouldn't that show up in Onavo?
Does anyone know of any apps (non-root) that will give me detailed network information? ip addresses/domains attached too and What apps are currently connected?
Has anyone else noticed the same issue? I did search the forum before posting so doubt it.
LBE Privacy Guard can give you detailed info as to the data being used by each app but I'm not sure it's much better than the info ICS gives you when you go to settings / data usage.

LBE was useful thanks, I have used it to identify 3D flip clock as one application using a lot more data than it should. After uninstalling my data usage has improved. May have just been a bad install or a faulty update.
I'm now wondering why "voice talk" is using so much, especially as I don't use it and every time it asks me "what would you like to do?" I tell it to uninstall itself but nothing happens. is there anything I can do to disable it?

Go to settings>applications click the "all" tab and there you can scroll down and locate voice talk. Click on it and then you get several options. One of them should be to disable it.
Great thanks
I have an HTC One, it's not rooted, so running all standard OS apps/settings etc.
I've been monitoring my usage due to restrictions on my data plan more than anything, and have been using the reasonably popular app "Traffic Monitor".
I'm finding I'm getting large amounts of 'system traffic', it isn't broken down any further than that. It's not push mail or fb traffic etc, that is all recorded separately
I'm talking between 50-100Mb of 'system traffic' a day while on wifi. Sometimes I get random bursts of ~70Mb over a 2 hour period.
Any thoughts on what this is or how to reduce it?
Extra info
On my work wifi I don't have the proxy configured, so the only thing it can access is the work mail server and most things google. That works fine for me given I use gmail and don't have a need for anything else on my phone while at work, but I still get this usage which (in my mind) and confirmed via packet inspection, tells me it is all 'google based' traffic.
My wife has an HTC One X + and it similarly accumulates a lot of system traffic but about 1/5-1/6th the amount my One does...
I went through and disabled all apps I have downloaded, turned off auto sync and htc error reporting, location services yada yada and it still seems to just carry on at about 1-5Kb every few seconds (so 60Kb odd per minute and a couple of Mb an hour - approximately speaking).
I have unlimited internet at home so it's not a major just seems really odd and excessive.
Don't know about you but I used chompsms and it was connecting like crazy.

Ah, I do use chompsms (and my wife doesn't). Will have a look at that!
Interesting, I just re-enabled dropbox and signed in, it synced my photos over the last few days using about 50Mb in say 3-4 minutes, in that same period my phone used 5Mb of 'system traffic'. I don't mean this in a paranoid way at all, but it's like it's reporting every bit of activity somewhere continuously. The system traffic is excessive in it's own right, but it also seems to be vastly inflated when other things are running...
I don't even know what an expected or adequate or minimal level of this system traffic would be.
Contemplating a full restore to factory and only installing the traffic monitor app to see how much it uses completely stock... Shouldn't have to faff around this much though :/
Will look into chomp and report back.
Maybe you should install betterbatterystats and see exactly what is sending all of this data.
Found out that there's are some HTC stock apps sending data, and I can't seem to find which ones are doing it. But that's ok add I guess it's related to meteo, blinkfeed, or global notifications system.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
It's not blinkfeed is it?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Thanks guys. After removing chompsms it still seemed to be accumulating 'system traffic'. I completely reset my phone and monitored it for half a day. It was far less, as in negligible. Have slowly reinstalled apps and it is increasing with each app install but it's still not at the level it was.
I have noticed it is definitely proportional to the other traffic being used. When I re set up dropbox and pulled down my photos (back to my blanked phone) it used about 1.5gb of dropbox traffic over say an hour or so, and the 'system traffic' for that period was about 120Mb. Once the download had stopped, the system traffic went back to being almost negligible.
I don't believe it is blinkfeed, as when I'm at work (with no proxy set) it wouldn't be able to pull in 99% of the blinkfeed content (no fb posts, no twitter etc).
I'm not that worried about it for myself, just think it's odd really.
So at the moment it is low again. And I'm slowly reinstalling apps and keeping an eye on it. I would like to get chompsms back on there.
I have purchased betterbatterystats, the trouble with that (and with the traffic monitor app) is so much of the 'google' and a bit of the 'htc' traffic/wakelocks are soo vague (IMO) but I'm not that technical tbf.
Hard to be sure exactly what it's tracking at at the moment given jumping on fb, web or emails inflates it (given this whole proportional thing noted) I can only really track it overnight for idle use, or during the time I'm sorting the kids and not on the phone etc.
Say it was rogue using 50-100Mb a day and I stay and a friend or families house on their wifi, and they have a 4gb plan not unlimited like myself, then I'd use a large chunk of their quota just with my phone idle in my pocket...
Not sure about that app but what you need to see is the traffic itself .. for example what sites or network are being connected to .. that might give a better idea of the issue at hand
As a XDA member you could have downloaded BBS for free I totally forgot to tell you that sorry

I searched the MOTO threads and cant find anything as of now to resolve this issue.
Anyone else having this issue and find a fix?
Tried wifi channels to see if this issue fixes this, cleared cache and nothing........
Hope help comes quick!
If I can get some help I will buy them a beer or coffee!
Okay here's an updated seems to fix the issue......
I disabled the WiFi location settings, download clean master -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard -- and seemed to have fixed the issue so far.
Keep you posted as the day goes on.
After you updated, did you do a factory reset? If not, and before you do, what apps do you have installed? You might have an unruly app that's just constantly running. I hear Google Fit hasn't been too friendly...
Since Google services is pretty high on the usage list, it could have something to do with syncing errors or maybe problems with updating Google Play services/Play Store. Make sure you have the latest versions.
Google Play services (6.5.85) - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google.../google-play-services-6-5-85-1589008-438-apk/
Google Play Store (5.0.38) - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/
Also, unsync any services in your Google account that you aren't using.
Don't forget to turn off extraneous radios like WiFi (if you don't use it for location), GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth when you're not using them.
If all else fails, factory reset and pay attention to the apps that are being downloaded. Uninstall garbage and disable what you can't uninstall, but don't use. Hopefully this helps.
EDIT: Seems you fixed it. Nice! Well, use this as a reference for your next step if things don't stay behaved.

Clear cache and reboot. If you still have the problem, do a factory reset. Also, has the phone stabilized? Have you been through a couple of charge/use cycles? There could be a load of background processes setting up for the first day or so.
Seems the Qualcomm battery guru is a culprit as is the xfinity WiFi app.
Motorola said do a factory reset but I don't want to if something else can be done.
Think it's fixed by the WiFi location and the clean matter app showing the apps that kill the battery.
Here is a great article about asps that keep restarting in lollipop. It's a bug in ART. Google is working on a fix.

I'll post my battery drain/overheating story just to join the fray...i updated to Lollipop 4 days ago and I have had to charge my S5 at least a dozen times. I have tried power save mode, disabling every nonessential app and anything else I can find in the forums.
I used to get 15-16hrs of battery life (6am-10pm) with charge to spare, but immediately after the update my CPU sits maxed (monitored by Micro CPU Monitor) and constantly overheats (GSAM Battery Monitor). The phone went from 95°F to 105°F in 10min with standard use. I only had it overheat one other time in the last year (on my dash in the summer). I hope Google/Verizon will replace my battery because this abuse of it is going to shorten the life considerably!
See screen shots from the last charge at 4pm to now (10:15pm) all while UNUSED and in powersave mode plus battery at 107°F (a new record for me)!
I really don't want to reset the phone and lose my app settings, plus it seems to be hit/miss with other's issues. Any suggestions would be great.
Seems hit or miss.
Not sure what to tell you but try making sure you're Wi-Fi isn't always searching for locations when not connected. Seems this is a huge problem for many as Verizon threads and Android forums are filling up. I don't have an S5 but will keep looking for the fix.

Hello all! New owner of the wonderful LG G6! I have a bit of a concern. I notice when I'm using wifi, the up/down arrows inside the wifi icon are always going crazy. The "down" arrow hits EVERY SINGLE second. But if I turn off wifi and just use LTE it stops.... I noticed this same exact thing on my previous phones, S7, J7 and now this. Anyone have an similar experience? I also notice that some people seem to have battery drain, I wounder if this could be the reason, as I seem to suffer the same drain. It's pretty horrible.

Something horribly wrong with the OS optimization of this phone. I always get the biggest battery drain as 'Phone Idle'. Much higher than the screen time.
This is the situation when I have even disabled most of the battery hungry apps like Google, Maps, Facebook, etc. This is really unacceptable.

Go to the Google app and tap the weather in the upper left of the screen. Then the options ellipsis "add to homescreen" and you'll always have access. Mine disappears at least 2 or 3 times / day then all of a sudden it's back. But I don't sweat it now with the home screen weather option.
Thank you, not a bad workaround..it still sucks to not be able to see the temperature at a glance on the lock screen though.
After googling it a little further I seem to have found a fix, clearing the Google App storage. As soon as I did the temperature return to the home screen, hopefully permanently. And hopefully I don't regret clearing over a GB of data from the app lol. I'm not sure what it had saved.

Lol it did disappear for a while yesterday afternoon but was back again this morning on it's own so...
Fortunately, I haven't noticed any other differences with the Google app. It did take a while to load and get back up to speed after I cleared the storage so I think most of the important stuff was restored automatically
Power management, destroyer of worlds.
Any power management apps are suspect, avoid using 3rd party ones.
Check to make sure this isn't what's picking it off.
No clue where or how many places it's found on this variant.
Developer options>standby apps, all buckets should show as active otherwise power management is active.
Individual app settings may also be misconfigured for battery savings and background data.

Yeah I was afraid of that. It has a mind of its own and does what it pleases. I've actually seen it disappear and reappear in the time it takes to get in and out of the shower. I also use a VPN but it doesn't matter, I've tried it both with it on and off. Same result.

Hmm, yeah, for troubleshooting purposes I should also mention I use an always-on VPN too (wireguard to my home network where I have Pi-Hole setup). Initially, I thought that it could be Pi-Hole blocking related but after restarting my phone with it the VPN off a few days ago, like you said it still disappeared eventually.
lol fwiw, I sent a feedback message through the Google app describing the issue, maybe at some point they find the issue.

With a factory reset even if does work the issue is likely to reoccur. Best to find the root cause.
Factory resets are useful for viruses, rootkits, major firmware updates and boot loops.
The modern Android OS can be surprisingly secure, robust and long lived.
Those who update/upgrade will not see this longevity and will be forced to do factory resets for optimum functionality (assuming the upgrade doesn't ruin the user experience, frequently it does). Google can't help itself*... you can.
*constant change is the rule and frequently Google will maim and degrade their product usability even cancel it. It's their nature...

I have never had this problem, but I have wiped a couple of times now after updating to the next version of 12, and I've been on it since DP1.
Maybe a wipe couldn't hurt to try. Save any apps' .apks that you didn't get from the Play Store to G Drive or Dropbox or something like that. Force a backup for everything with adb shell to backup to G Drive (Google's backup system is surprisingly good now) and after restoring it, all you'll have to do is sign into apps again. Also, save anything you want to keep in /downloads.
Wiping is really only a minor inconvenience if you do preparation and/or prepare for the possibility of it being something you have to do beforehand.
That being said, I really miss the days of TWRP backups and an extSD

I don't use any Google backup, except Gmail which stores it automatically, on my 10+, all critical data goes on the data drive ie SD card.
That in turn is redundantly backed up on a flashstick and hdds.
Texts, AT&T backup.
Google play Services runs only as needed. Google Backup Transport, Framework and Firebase never run... I killed Google as much as was practical.
So the no cloud apps running draining bandwidth and battery. I took some time, used trial/error and thought it through. I've had it with big sister Gookill Hard experience has taught me not to trust Google over the last 15+ years. Got tried of getting burned. Gmail was so much better 12 years ago, it's zenith... a prime example of the incompetence of Google. Or Picasso
I backup all my apps and updates with ApkExport so no Playstore is needed on a reload. Homescreen and themes are backup by Samsung StartSwitch. All critical apps like Poweramp, ColorNote, etc have their settings saved the the SD card, etc.
Basically I can do a full restore with no internet connection save text messages. Apps that don't permit saved backups may be lost but in the case of malware or an unknown issue that may be a good thing. After 2 back to back boot loops and factory resets over a year ago... I streamlined the time wasting reload process.
I expect to reload at 6 months or so when the OS started to show signs of age. Not so. All I do is minimum maintenance with SD Maid and the old Samsung Device Care cleaner. Of all my XP, XPx64, W7, Kitkat loads over the years this stock Pie load has proven to have aged exceptionally well. There were a couple times I had to do some serious witch hunting because of a rogue app or a hidden setting issue but was able to resolve it without damage to the OS.
So I just leave it be...
In my experience the Android Pie has proven to be robust and very versatile.
Because I'm running a stock AT&T 10+, TWRP backups are not possible
And just like that my weather is gone. Two beers at the local brewery and adios. I'll ask the Mrs. what the weather holds for tomorrow. Can I say, Ok Google you win, give me back my weather?

And just a little added info, my wife has the P5 also and doesn't know what a VPN is no less uses one. Same thing happens to her phone at different times than mine. Both of us 100% stock.

This is my first Pixel, and I am loving it. Using a VPN for me just messes with the location, the bug is still random. Wish Google would fix this, or just let us remove the darn thing.

Ok, I think some confusion by my post. I most certainly did NOT perform the factory reset in hopes to fix this Weather bug.. I was just stating that even on a fresh install this is still happening.. Google needs to address/fix it.

I'm very confused by your posts. They are completely OT.
Are you even using the Pixel 5.
Heck, are you even on Android 11?
Please start a new thread, or find one that suits what you'd like to speak about, as this isn't the place to talk about de-Googleing, as much as I agree with it.

All Androids share common problems and solutions. I cross platform searches between manufacturers/devices/Android versions frequently to find solutions... otherwise my 10+/Pie still be a mess!
If the issue still remains after a factory reset it just proves the original settings may be misconfigured from the get go. Putting it in Safe mode would have been enough.
You need to play with it and start looking hard.
Cross platform as I described when doing Google searches and use multiple search engines.
You don't see me posting threads about issues I have until they're fixed. I try to post solutions only. Occasionally I acknowledge a known issue as glitches are common... as are work arounds.
As for Android 11, you have my sympathy. A lot of 3rd party diagnostic tools were lost starting with Q making your task harder.

So what's the verdict? Did it remain or disappear again?

Just found this solution:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pixel_phones/comments/n6vxp4
That works for now The other tip I saw was rather than removing the new widget like in the video, keep it on another screen. For now I removed it but if it disappears again (which it probably will), I'm going to try that.

I wonder if this will even be a thing when Android 12 comes out. As of beta 5 there is no weather on the lockscreen but it's not certain it will stay that way for release.
