I have a rooted Kindle Fire 7 (2015) running 5.1.1. If I rename the OTA Device Update apks (or freeze them with App Quarantine/Freeze), can I upgrade to 5.1.2 with the .bin file using FlashFire? If so, what steps do I need to follow? Do I need to reflash the 5.0.1 bootloader, or will FlashFire prevent that from being affected?

If you're running the 5.0.1 bootloaders and want to keep them, you can just use this to upgrade to 5.1.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/howto-install-fireos-5-1-1-root-gapps-t3265594

Thanks! I had thought that following that process would work, but I was hoping that I could simplify it by using FlashFire.
Has anyone had any experience utilizing FlashFire to upgrade a rooted Fire to 5.1.2?

Not a good idea. The 5.1.2 (any) package from Amazon is not designed to be flashed in this manner. Good chance the 5.0.1 bootloader/kernel would be replaced; might also brick the device. It is possible to parse out the various components from an Amazon distributable allowing just the rom (system partition) to be flashed but I don't see the point given other options exist.
UPDATE: never mind...I found a thread
I went through all of the steps of the longer method and it worked perfectly! Has anyone upgraded to 5.1.4 this way (the original, not FlashFire) and successfully kept root?

Distinct feeling that will just make it have the same effect as using the OTA upgrade, but I'm not sure.

Indeed, you might as well just turn on OTA, and wait for it
You have to be able to root somehow, and the best way is through TWRP since otherwise 5.1.1 is currently impenetrable.
So if I wanted to do a fresh install I would just have to wait for the 5.1.1 root?
Sent from my KFFOWI using Tapatalk
Why on earth would you want to install 5.1.1?
Have you read what 5.1.1 does? See [PSA] Information Regarding Firmware Version 5.1.1.
Only safe way to install 5.1.1 is detailed here: HOWTO] Install FireOS 5.1.1, ROOT, GAPPS and keep TWRP access and even then you will be worse off on 5.1.1. I believe you can't remove any bloatware or the lockscreen ads.
In what way is installing it through twrp not a fresh install if (after backing up) you wipe it all? (assuming install files and backups made to an external sd)

Couldn't one factory reset in TWRP and then use bibikalka's upgrade/root method? (I'm asking.)
If you want a completely fresh install then you can just reinstall 5.0.1

So long as you realise that they might never come.
If your tablet is functional atm I can't understand why you want to do something that might never work rather than something that does easily.
If you are on anything other than 5.1.1 atm see if you can swap with someone desperate to get rid of a Fire stuck on it.
So really I should just keep it on 5.0.1 rooted with Google launcher and see if 5.1.1 gets rooted

You are in root & custom Rom land now. There will be so called "upgrades" to the amazon OS that provide zero upgrade, only serve to disable root, roms, debloating & adblocking.

I will buy your 5.0.1 Fire / trade. I am entirely serious.
If you want 5.1.1 and don't mind taking a chance, waiting for a new 5.1.1 root exploit to come out, I have another Fire on it's way to me from Amazon. It may very well come preloaded with 5.1.1. I will seriously trade. I need a custom rom, root doesn't do what I need.
I am not looking to sell my device I'm sorry friend!
So I am better off leaving 5.0.1 rooted in my Fire since it does everything I need it to.

You need to reload 5.1.2 (can not go back to 5.1.1). See third post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485/page11
I had the same thing happen to me recently. You will just need to do a restore firmware using 5.1.2. You can find the firmware here: http://rootjunkysdl.com/files/?dir=Amazon Fire 5th gen/Firmware Use the file dated 3/17/16. This video is helpful (although my drivers did not install automatically for me, I installed them manually though the supertool makes it easier) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQLoH-ahjy4

No - device will brick. FireOS version is unrelated to your issue. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/help/install-cyanogenmod-fire-tablet-5th-gen-t3512018
Hi! I have a 5th gen Fire tablet running 5.1.1, rooted with the Supertool, lock screen ads turned off.
I'd like to get Alexa. I understand that Alexa is available in firmware 5.3.2.
I see here that 5.3.2 can't be rooted but can be downgraded to 5.3.1, which can be rooted. So I think 5.3.2 is the version that I want, rather than 5.3.2.1, to preserve the option to root in the future.
What is the process to upgrade my tablet to 5.3.2? Based on experience with other devices, I would expect that I'd need to do some combination of unrooting, factory reset, clear data and cache, etc.
But I'm reading the instructions for restoring stock firmware here, it looks like all I need to do is an adb sideload in stock recovery. Is it really that simple? No need to do anything else?
I'm assuming the result of that will be a fresh install of 5.3.2 with Alexa, and then I'll want to use the Supertool to install the Play Store.
Can anyone just provide a quick confirmation that I have this right? Thanks for any help!
5.3.2 isnt rootable, OTA updates will probably be an issue unless you can block auto updates.

Yep. You'll probably want to hold off if retaining root option (and ability to flash a custom ROM) is more important than Alexia. Might also consider grabbing a refurb Fire 7 from Amazon (<$30 USD) and running Alexia on that pup. Best of both worlds...albeit with additional cost and hassle of dealing with 2 devices.
Thanks for the heads up about OTA updates. I figured I could just ignore OTA updates and stay on 5.3.2. But is that not the case? Will Amazon automatically update 5.3.2 to 5.3.2.1 without my approval?
Sorry for the very basic questions. I've been happily running 5.1.1 (rooted, OTA updates disabled by Supertool), so I hadn't considered the problem of a forced update.
Or is there another way to get Alexa (custom ROM, for instance)?
Thanks again!

Yes, it will automatically update as soon as it can. And unfortunately, updates can't be disabled without root, so 5.3.1 is the newest you can safely obtain without locking into the terrible 5.3.2.1 situation we're in now.
My tablet just jumped from 5.3.2.1 to 5.3.3.0 in one day. I tried kingroot several times hoping it would work. It did not. I performed factory reset on it and signed into amazon. When i woke up it was at 5.4.0.0. My question is if a root exploit is found for 5.3.2.1 or 5.3.3.0 can it be rolled back? This all started from a bad SD card that kept resetting my old fire. I thought there was something wrong with the tablet and bought a used one off eBay hoping it would come with 5.1.2. I love AOSP on these machines.

If I recall correctly, 5.3.3.0 COULD be rolled back to 5.3.2.1. And 5.4 supposedly, or theoretically can be rolled back to 5.3.3. So theoretically, yes it could be rolled back to 5.3.2.1 from 5.4.

Hey, do you have a link (or tips) to how you did this? I have 5.4.0.0 and the advice I'm getting is that this system version cannot be rooted or downgraded, that trying will brick it. You're the only one who seems to have had success. The follow-up link given by someone else (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ama...h-gen-t3285294) doesn't have a shred of info on 5.4.x.x.
I just downgraded to 5.3.2.1 from 5.4.0.0 i have never acheived root. You gain nothing by doing it. I did it just to see if i could. Hope that helps.

Clarification: you can not downgrade from 5.4.x.x+ to a rootable version of FireOS as of the date of this post (5.3.1.0/5.3.2.0 are the highest rootable builds). Amazon updated the bootloader concurrent with delivery of FireOS 5.3.2.1; manually rolling back to a lower version will brick the device. At present there is not a method for downgrading FireOS independent of the bootloader on an unrooted device.

Probably 'yes' based on a couple user reports. However, there is no benefit to offset the potential brick risk if the version of FireOS currently on your device has an incompatible bootloader. 5.3.2.1 can not be rooted so what's the point?
