Has one else completely trashed the USB port and had problems charging and connecting it via the computer and then mysteriously it started working flawlessly? Mine is working perfect after 6 months of wireless only charging...

That often happens when you feed it a new cable.

It was a used cable that I have tried several times in my girlfriend's car. She uses it daily to charge her phone and then I tried it as a last ditch effort when my phone was drained. Then I went in the house and tried an older cable I used to use and it worked perfect.

I hope it happens to me as well.

I've had my Nexus 6 since launch and I finally had to replace the battery about a year ago and around the same time my USB port started to have issues. I ordered a new port, but I moved since and have no idea what I did with it. It's fairly easy to replace on your own and parts are cheap. I think I bought two ports off eBay for 5 bucks and the battery for 15. Cheap China stuff I know, but it works.
Sometimes it starts working again when I get out the canned air and spray the port, but eventually it gets testy again.
I can't stress enough to replace the parts yourself if you can. This is the only Android device to last me as a daily driver for more than one year. I've only recently been considering something new because development has been slowly moving away from it and I love experimenting with different ROMs.

So my otherwise adorable 1 year old somehow got his hands on my Captivate this weekend. When we finally caught him, he was chewing and slobbering on it pretty much right where the USB port is. After getting the phone back out of his grubby little hands, my wife and I took it completely apart and have had the whole works soaking in rice for a day or so.
When I put it back together, it booted just fine, and everything seems to be in working order. Except...when I plug a cable into the USB port, it doesn't charge, and it doesn't connect to my computer for storage mounting/flashing. This would be a bit of a problem.
I've checked for obstructions in the port itself and there don't seem to be any. I can get by for now without charging because my wife and I have the same phone (so we can periodically swap batteries...), but she's leaving town for two weeks at the end of this week. I really don't want to have to buy a new phone...so any ideas on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Once the USB port is gone its gone, you would need to get an external wall charger for it and a wifi file browser.
there might be some moister in it yet, but generally the captivates had issues with the USB port just flaking out like that. Its a common problem for this phone, and also has happened to mine.
Or you can just pay ~35$ to get it fixed, look in my sig. They are good!

Hmm...I didn't even realize that was an option. I'll be looking into that. Thanks!
They fixed mine and it works great. I would also order a new cable from them for like 7 bucks. It is all well worth it!
interesting, didnt know about that one either
Update:
It's apparently not *quite* as dead as I thought. It's still not recognizing my computer or telling me that it's charging...but apparently it is actually charging my battery. I plugged it into my computer just to see and left it. It never said that the phone is charging, but when I came back a few minutes later the battery meter had gone up, and it's still doing that fairly consistently.
That's at least good news for now. Even if the USB transfer is dead, I'm still OK as long as I can charge. As long as I don't have to use download mode...
That sounds like a bad cable, just buy one of those first, cheaper and easier to check!

It's nothing to do with the cable. We have four USB cables and two different car chargers. It's the same thing with all of them, and they all work perfectly on my wife's phone.

My first Captivate had a USB port go bad.. I tried 10 different cables and decided for some reason it was a ROM issue and got into download mode.. well let's just say I was buying another Captivate the next day.. lol
I did resurrect it by buying a Captivate with a broken screen on Ebay cheap. Combined the two and it's actually a later production and the GPS works good compared to hardly at all before. M yold screen and new guts.. Now I have a spare phone to try new Roms on without messing up my daily driver.. (Dark Knight 4 atm)
I see broke screen Captivates for $40-80 on Ebay regularly..
My wife also has a captivate with a dead USB port. So I went on amazon and searched for captivate batteries and external charger and found a package that came with 2 extended life batteries and the wall charger that charges one separatly from the phone while you use the other in the phine . Its made by Laza wireless and both batteries and charger was 15.99 and shipped free. Got it in two days and works great and was a whole lot cheaper than a phone.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I have had the same problem for months also caused by a toddler sucking on the phone and cables. I swap batteries daily. stock/1800/2430 mah. I am curious if anyone knows of a wireless charging option. I know my wii batteries are inductive and it is just the new battery and charger on a stock remote. is there an inductive charger and battery available for cappy? is wireless charging dangerous to the phone if it wasnt designed with it in mind? for that matter is anything available for anyother phones besides the lumia 920 and maybe nexus I think?
cheapest, best option is to get the USB port repaired by mobiletechvideos.com, imho.
I know of no induction solution for captivate that works without a good usb port.
I figured and also thought the Cappy wouldn't be a device supported by a new battery developer when there is so many newer ones out.
Thx

Hey all,
I have replaced the charge port once already on my vivid, as it would no longer connect to a computer, and while the replacement worked wonderful, I noticed that after a couple months it got looser (cord wasn't anchored in as well) like the one I replaced, until one of the pins bent inward. I attempted to pull it back out but that just broke it off.
Are there any charge ports I can get that are more... Life proof or me-proof? More so than the original one.
Also, my audio port is being very picky about when it thinks there is a cord in it, making playing music in my car a hassle. Is Is his happening happening anyone else? Is there a way to fix it? Are there replacement audio jacks, or do I need to replace the whole case?
Thanks for whoever can point me in the right direction!

Lesson learned by me...
Spend at least $12 on your port...
I replaced 2 cuz I bought a $5 one and it lasted about 2 months...
The $12 one I bought lasted till the phone no longer took a charge... Got another year by buying that charge port and a $15 3500mah battery at the same time
Thank you, I've since bought another ~$15 port and it's doing fine so far. I also got my 3.5mm audio port working just fine again! I cleaned it out using a paperclip and got loads of dust and rubbish out of it, and now it's fine. Unfortunately the touchscreen doesn't work properly in a few areas, and reseating the flex cable did not resolve that issue, so I'm thinking I may upgrade to an Asus Zenfone 2 (still can't believe it's running an intel chip). Still gonna grab a new digitizer and repair, but my poor Vivid is getting pretty sluggish with my usage, and its age doesn't make it an appealing device to develop for, so the PAC rom is the newest we're gonna get for an OS.
Definitely gonna figure out a way to use it as a security cam though
Got my Note 5 with the adaptive faster charger about 3 and a half weeks ago. On my second Note 5 now (had to send the first one in due to problems) and everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I would notice my phone saying "charging" and then I would have to unplug and plug it back in then the "fast charging" would appear. Now it doesn't ever go into "fast charging" and no matter what I do I always get "charging". I currently have 93% battery and it is telling me 15 minutes until full which seems a lot slower. I tried using my old Note 4 fast charger and get the same issue.
Anyone else with this issue? Wondering if it's the phone or actual charger and if there is anything I can do to get a replacement.
I never paid attention, but I just always figured that the adaptive charger would switch from 5V/2A to 9V/1.67A when it was nearing full charge.

Try a factory reset. If it doesn't work, get it exchanged asap.
Check if the fast charging option in power settings is enabled

I know this thread is kind of old but in case you havent resolved your issue. I had the same problem with my phone so I called warranty, they sent me a brand new charger with cable and it works fine now. I compared the one they sent as a replacement and the one that came with the phone and the replacement cable is actually a lot thicker and feels way more durable. My guess is Samsung cheaped out and threw in a crappy cable to save cost but it wears down A LOT faster than a durable heavy duty one like the replacement I got. Anyways the new charger is working 100% of the time and has held up for about a week so far. we'll see how much longer this cable last.

Quick question, did you contact Samsung directly for this? Did they mail you something or did you have to go in to a local repair depot?
Thanks.

I actually called ATT customer service/warranty center. He told me he'd send me a new charger and cable and I needed to send back my old one. Got it in less than 2 days. Sorry for not being more specific. Also fast charging is still going 100% of the time on the new cable.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to give my provider a call. I can verify that once I switched the cable I have no issues fast charging. I'm not having a good experience with Samsung so far. When you charge almost $1,000 for a product I expect it to be free of defects in every day use. Meanwhile my cable is messed up after only 3 weeks of owning it and the phone has signal problems that require me to cycle airplane mode to get data working. Never had a problem with my Nexus phones or iPhones. Really poor qualify control.
Hi guys,
I have a nexus 6 with Marshmallow, a few days ago I realized (using Ampere) that my nexus is not charging as fast as it should in turbo mode. I have done several things, like trying 5 cables, 2 turbo chargers, I also did a factory reset, I downgraded to Lollipop and nothing works, I always get 1,200 am maximum.... Using the warranty is not an option because I don't live in the same country were I bought the cellphone
Any ideas?

my turbo charge stopped working in june, 1200mV is all i get as well. ive spent lots of time trying to figure out why and trying to fix it. so far, nothing. but i DO believe that the issue is caused by my usb port in the phone(hardware). my usb has been getting harder and harder to connect to, and wont hold very well when connected. i actually have only one chord that ill connect to(as of now), and it barely holds onto my phone. anyways, thats my experience with it. it doesnt really bug me too much. even though i did have to buy a wireless charger since i thought no more wires would connect(and it charges even slower).
Hi All
I have this OCD that I'm going to damage the Micro USB port when inserting or removing the cable. Is the port durable? And should I just not worry about it?
In note 4, it will get loose and you need you find position that charges the phone.
Well using the app "phone info" on my rooted note 4 I can tell you I have connected a usb lead 712 times in the last year and I have no looseness or connection issues whatsoever.
No the most scientific of responses I know, but hopefully it will give you an idea.

I don't know I've abused the port a lot, plugging in at night, moving it around quite carelessly too, then I also flooded it with water once accidentally, after a few hours of weirdness it still works great, not loose or anything
edit: charger connect counter: 1113

My phone has been plugged in charging many a time in our living room and my Mrs has caught the charger lead with her foot and launched the phone across the room! Lol never had any adverse effects on the micro usb connection.

If you've got a dodgy connection, replace the lead. They're cheap (much cheaper than trying to replace the socket)
My experience is that most micro USB leads are good for a couple of hundred connections or so.
Thanks to everyone who has replied. I really appreciate it soo much. I now will charge my phone worry free.
I charge wireless to save a little wear and tear on mine.
Still have connected 1108 times and 707 for spen. Spen is a little loose.

It is much better than Mini-USB standard, which usually get broken in mid-long use.
My Micro-USB port is working very fine in my Note 4. Charged around 800 times.
almost 2000 count on my phone
and still work fine
800 times, no problem.
FYI, the MicroUSB standard states a design lifetime of 10000 cycles. The weakest parts are on the cable side.

Yeah actually the cable that came with my note 4 is a bust. the rubber part near the micro usb plug started cracking this summer and then opened up a month later
Is it easy to replace the USB port ?
Charger Connect Counter on mime is 2181. My port has just worn as in paint has chipped but 100% funtional
