Seems that I have some options now... Found a nexus amoled on ebay for 85... Takes 10 minutes to replace. The insurance takes ~30 days to process and I can't wait that long. So I bought a new nexus and the amoled. If insurance approves the claim, then ill sell the amoled and give them the phone. If they deny, ill replace broken amoled and sell nexus locally to a buddy (I can get more for it in working shape than with cracked screen).
Luckily, there was no damage beyond screen (digitizer and case are perfect still). So looks like ill get some good $ for it when repaired.
But now I'm back in the holding pattern for a new nexus to show up... Argh! (And I'm back on what seems like an ancient smartphone for a while -- bb 8900. Though it still responds to touch perfectly, the nexus' broken screen became flooded with purples and its not legible anymore. D'oh!)
I assume OP will be investing in a screen protector this time around

OP had phone in Zagg invisible shield, silicone gel skin, and horizontal cellet belt case at time of fall. I was getting out of the car and the seat belt caught the phone holster, sorta tearing it off of me, and it went from SUV height (5ish feet) to the concrete pavement below me. I even heard the crack of the screen (was a very painful sound to experience).
A sad day indeed.

well if this helps, she got her nexus back in less than a week. she is in new jersey, USA. i called HTC, the next morning she received shipping. she got her nexus back 2 days later all fixed up. less than a week. i guess it would depend where in the world you are located though. i think HTC has repair facilities on the east coast, near baltimore.
You had better luck than I did. I sent my phone out 13 days ago to HTC to repair a cracked screen. I paid $115 for the screen replacement on day 2, but STILL have not gotten my phone back. I am very disappointed in the Cust Care at HTC.
I just wanna say that OP has a cool screenname hehe.
And sorry about your screen. My advice - definitelly go with HTC. They know how to take these phones apart properly and they won't cut corners on that. You'll get a proper new native N1 screen.

Tough Case next time then
Thats unfortunate, OP.
My cheap gel case saved my precious from a bad drop to the asphalt. Not a scratch.
id really like an otterbox solution... but i rely on the dock for most of the day and night... and i am a battery swapper too. hmph...
this is not the first time ive had this happen... with the seatbelt taking my phone for a ride without me approving. some years ago, this happened with a BB 8700. but, i didnt know i didnt have the phone on my person until i back out the car and saw something on the ground in front of me. and then i realized that i drove over my @$#%&[email protected]# blackberry. i need a usb dongle coming out of my arm pit, and then id just have the n1 sewn into my forearm.
Anyone have experience in UK with HTC? what's the cost and time? Damn dropped it last night and the screen was with some scrambled colours. This morning had a proper look on screen and I can see cracked lines running all over. I think it's the inner screen that's broken.

Well... Sounds like you learned a valuable lesson on how to protect your new Nexus! Sell your SUV, get a sub-compact, and stop using seat belts!
So today as I was whatsapping and after sending my messaging I turned the screen off to place my note 4 on the table. As I did so while the phone was still in my hand I noticed a crack/ scratch form itself.
Naturally I took it back to Samsung whom refused to take it back saying it was my fault. In the UK we have a sales of goods act in which the dealer must prove that there is no inherent fault if the product is faulty within 6 months. They just outright refused me.
I will give the head office a call tomorrow and if that gets me nowhere I'll take it to a small claims court.

Ouch. I am not in the UK but I am interested to see how this all turns out
Thanks, the worst part is that I actually watched as the scratch formed itself and grew bigger.
My hypothesis is that it may have been caused by heating and cooling of the phone.
My Note 4 did get pretty warm one time at which point it throttled itself. Hope someone at Samsung actually
knows how the UK law operates and sorts this out.
That seems like a crack, do you have a gap to the near edge there ? Im pretty sure the tiny gaps the phone has are to prevent exactly this type of cracking the screen against the metal edge due to heat cycles
Update: There are now three scratch/cracks which are parallel. I am beyond upset with Samsung and their unwillingness to sort this issue out.
I hope this doesn't happen to me x_x I doubt anyone would believe me if I told them that at best buy or something
Holy sh*t dude.
Let me know how this goes tomorrow. That is NOT cool.
That's not looking good at all, you should repost your story and photos on Samsung's Facebookpage and Google Plus page for everyone to see and hope that they will reply to you there. It might be a way to get around the denied reply you got from techsupport.

You obviously have a faulty unit. Raise hell and don't give up until they replace it.

Cool story bro. You wouldn't believe it until it happens to you. At the end of the day, if I were to scratch or crack my phone, I wouldn't give a **** and just replace the screen myself.
But in this case, I am disappointed with a phone I purchased less than 2 weeks ago. I'd expect it to be defect free for £630 and if it does have a defect Samsung should have taken it back.
I've never owned an Apple phone before, but I have purchased headphones from the apple store before which when it went faulty after 11 months they swiftly refunded it according to the 'sales of goods act' which the manager lady there said so herself. The lads at Samsung need a sales law seminar.
I see little leprechauns in my garden at night and no one believes me.
My Note 2 has a crack that runs diagonally from the upper left to the lower right. One single continuous crack that mysteriously showed up out of the blue. No spider webbing or whatever. I did NOT drop my phone. I did not witness the crack appear, as the OP, but did notice it shortly after I had been for a walk out in the heat. I have always been convinced that it was a fault in the glass to make it crack in this way. Phone still works fine and I never pursued the issue with Samsung (I had owned the phone approximately 7 months when said crack occurred.) I work at a college and have seen a huge amount of cracked screens...all spiderwebbed and nasty...mine is just the one diagonal edge to edge anomaly. So yeah, I believe it could happen. Good luck getting Samsung or the carrier to do anything about it though. I do wish you well on your endeavor.

If you have the option, just try a different location to do the exchange. That doesn't look like a typical crack.
Happened to my s4, the thread is still going I think. It cracked like that in my pocket. I think it was from heat of my thigh and the cool air or something. Samsung told me I must have dropped it for that to happen. And in the end I sold it on eBay for spares and got like £200 for it.... Best of luck.

Samsung really became Samsuck lately.....
I'll never go back to Samsung again after I replace my S-2. The best smartphone made by Samsung ever. All the rest is a pure miss by them.
To OP and fellas with cracked screens....good luck on your way and a pro tip......Don't buy Samsung anymore...they just need money....your money....that is all their aim is....purchase another device which is "better"....sadly...
my 0.02€
So apparently my S6 Edge's screen cracked, edge to edge, precisely, diagonally UNDERNEATH THE GLASS..
This blows as basically Samsung won't do anything about it, ATT won't do anything about it. I won't be able to trade it in for ATT Next, and basically screwed the 914 dollars for this phone.
Sure the phone still works, there are no issues, but the crack is horrible to the eyes.
I can tell you as a first time Galaxy buyer, I already bought a LG G4, and plan on doing an insurance claim which will cost me 200 dollars and try and sell it or something, then I will never think about buying a Samsung device again. Poor quality control.
I am just saying, very disappointed with Samsung on this..

Yes, it just costs 200 dollars to use. I remember when insurance was only like 50 bucks.
I got an LG G4, Samsung agreed to replace the screen, so once I get that done I'm just going to sell the phone.

My phone was not in my pocket.
It was gently resting on a solid surface. I picked it up, used it, was fine, set it down, picked it up again, cracked screen. The screen looks more like a tension crack than anything.
Samsung said they might be willing to cover it under warranty since there is NO impact marks at all. So I shipped them my phone and I am waiting. If they don't fix it, I'll insurance claim it. Either way after all is said and done I will basically sell the phone as I bought the G4 and its so much better.
I'm a union laborer and keep my phone in my pocket at all times with just the slim grinke case and every once in a while I lean on it hard or something hits it I get worried look at it and it's always good
So Samsung just told me that YES the crack is only on the inside of the screen, that the screen itself does not appear to be damaged. However, they will not cover it under warranty.
I shall vow to never purchase a Samsung product ever again. This phone has been a nightmare when it comes to quality control.
Original cost was 235. With enough complaining I got it down to 108.
My S6 glass did get a thin crack from the right side of the home button to the edge of the screen after one day of use. Did not drop it, or any abusive treatment, the day I used it.(Kept in my jacket pocket when it was not in use)
Returned it to be checked and hopefully repaired, but no such luck. Got it back unrepaired and had to pay the cost for the check. (Explanation from the workshop was that the glass on the S6 does not break, and this was their first case, so no warranty repair)
Will check with Samsung directly, but based on the other posts in this tread i'm not to optimistic.
Has anyone got a cracked glass repaired on warranty?
Just a comment to those with this phone that *haven't* had this issue, you have to remember that engineering and QC are essentially a numbers game. Areas that might have problems aren't going to go bad 100% of the time, even under duress.
If anyone remembers the days of bad pixels, they didn't happen to every screen. And the manufacturers were basically balance the cost of the technology, QC, and warranty claims. It didn't serve anyone for people to say, "But *I* don't have bad pixels," when others users are reporting that they are not only having bad pixels cropping up with new devices *and* the manufacturer told them to pound sand.
The edge screens are a new innovation and are going to have some sort of failure rate. Samsung can't produce hundreds of thousands of devices and not have at least one failure that had nothing to do with the end user.
This probably didn't pop up frequently enough (or at all) during testing and QC didn't have adequate means to identify devices that might experience this failure (perhaps due to the way the screen or display is mounted to the phone chassis) and, now that there are enough numbers in the wild, people are experiencing a problem that is clearly the fault of the manufacturer.
Samsung then compounds the issue by saying they won't fix or replace it under warranty.
That's pretty shameful. I say this as someone with a lot of Samsung devices.
Also, remember that Samsung has a pretty long history of defects that they wouldn't deal with under warranty. The original Galaxy S had GPS problems that essentially rendered that feature unusable on a large number of devices and Samsung did nothing and offered no warranty service despite it clearly being manufacturer defect.
Let's focus on the problem rather than tell people that are reporting it to stop wearing skinny jeans.
This same thing happened to me, I have a hairline crack going from the top left of the phone all the way down to about 1 inch from the bottom left, from the edge to just past the edge in a curve.
I never dropped the phone, and it's in a case... no marks on the case nor on the phone that would indicate it had a fall and I know I didn't drop it. And I don't wear skinny jeans either.
I am thinking there must be a design flaw on these curved screens (I notice the phone does get very hot when charging, and am thinking if there was a fault in the glass the heat from charging could have caused it to crack?) - anyone hear anything more on it, is it any more rampant than what has been discussed here, any signs of Samsung admitting there may be a flaw in the design and that they would cover it under warranty?
I've only had the phone just about 1 month :\
I had the exact same thing happen to me. It was only about a month after I bought it. Mine was just sitting on the table (face up) and I actually heard it crack. Made a "tink" sound. Never dropped it before and I'm very careful with my phone.
I do have insurance, but I'm not spending any more money on this POS ..

I bought Samsung Note 8 at the price of 56,000INR.
I added Samsung official back cover.
One fine day my phone fell from my bed side-table(barely 2 feet) and to my horror, not only its glass was damaged, its display got damaged as well.
If company boasts usage of Gorilla glass 5 and claims of doing multiple drop tests, how can the phone get damaged so easily by a mere 2 feet drop?
I filed a complaint to customer support saying that "I do not think the quality of product is at par with the price tag" and I am told that I will have to bear the expenses. The repair cost is approx 18,000 INR and they are giving me 25% discount which brings down the repair cost to approx 13,000 INR which is still too high.
Samsung makes a tall claim about drop tests. I have a youtube video link where they boast about drop tests, but couldn't share it here since the forum doesn't allow sharing outside links.
I consider this as "Misleading Advertisement" case.
I am thinking of suing the company on the grounds that:
1) They are misleading the customer with such ads
2) They are charging customer for a bad product. If the phone has Gorilla glass, the glass should have broken and protected the display from being damaged.
Do you guys think it is worthwhile taking the efforts to sue Samsung?
You dropped your phone, now it is broken. It will be very difficult that the drop in your case should not have damaged phone.
Samsung may have done a lot to make the phone more durable and more resistant to drops etc., but it doesn't mean the phone is drop proof.
Insurance can cover damage due to accidents, Samsung will not. Any coulance in reducing repair costs by Samsung is a bonus and all in my view you can expect.
Bottom line: don't sue Samsung.
You dropped the phone, then it is YOUR fault, just like that, the device was not designed or constructed to be undestructible or entirely shock proof, there are some heavy duty devices outhere,, but even those can suffer damage, the tests measure the capacity of the device to continue to operate after drops, shocks etc, that is, to be able to function, make and receive calls, the screen beeing legible and responsive to touch
If you have a history of dropping phones I'd strongly encourage you buy a Moto Z. The body is composed of metal, and the screen is shatter proof. I baby phones that are sandwiched between glass, whereas my Moto can handle drops unscathed.
The phone screen is glass.. The phone back is glass.. What makes u think dropping the phone won't break the glass?
No improvements? Ok let's compete it to another type of glass we all know.. Try a glass cup. Drop it and see.
Now do you see the improvements?

What is up with everyone wanting to sue Samsung? Is this because of the recent trend in America where everyone sues each other for absolutely no reason, now everyone else also wants to sue someone to make a bit of money because they're unhappy? "I'm unhappy, now you have to pay me".
Basically any lawyer you tell your story to, will laugh at you. Sure, Gorilla Glass 5 is supposed to be stronger, but the glass is also a lot thinner than they used to be 8 years ago. Just because it's been drop-tested, doesn't mean it's indestructible. It's still glass and it will still break. Samsung didn't falsely advertise anything. They just said it's been drop-tested, not that it won't or can't break. Plus, also, you dropped it and it's your fault. Samsung isn't liable for your own negligence. Suing a company for "false advertising" is just saying "I broke it and now I'm unhappy and don't want to pay the repair, so instead I want to try and make money out of them for my unhappiness".
Bottom line. No, I don't think you can sue Samsung because of that. What do you think the courts of the world would look like if every person tried to sue a mobile manufacturer for false advertising, every time they dropped their phone? Why do you think you haven't seen or heard of any such cases happening before? Because it's just ludicrous.
Stop being salty because you were negligent and broke your expensive device, and either pay the repair or get a different device. At the end of the day, no one buys a Note device for their reputable sturdy and ruggedness and resistance to breaking.
I traded in my Note 8 as part of the deal to get the S10+. I think the S10+ is a great phone- though a bit overhyped by reviewers. The Note 8 trade in value was generous.
My question is- how long does it take Samsung to assess the trade in? My Note 8 was in excellent condition, but Samsung's criteria for acceptance under terms and conditions is broad. I would prefer returning the S10 if they don't accept my trade in. Samsung support was all over the place on this- anywhere from a few days to a few months.
My Note 8 is was already received by Ingram Micro/Samsung for processing.

Not from experience but from talking to people that have done the trade it is all over the place. I know one person that took almost a month and one that got the phone back because they said it was cracked, which it was but apparently after he shipped it or Samsung received it. I've seen reports where people said it was a slow process. Because of the hype and how slow they shipped, I would guess that the trade inspection will be slow also.
Samsung UK site says they will make a decision on the condition of your return and notify you within 10 days.
I've traded in a pristine s9+ for an s10+, I took a 5 minute video showing the device from every angle before putting it in the sealed return bag -
i also traded in my wifes s7 edge for an s10e, given it was 3 years old the s7 did show some signs of wear and tear.
5.2 of the trade in terms conditions says
It must only have normal wear and tear - there must be no damage or blemishes to
screen/LCD and the casing around the device including the camera lens must not be
cracked. No level of liquid damage is acceptable
I think this is bit contradictory on one hand it can show normal wear and tear, on the other hand it must have no damage or blemishes ! (this could easily be argued as an unreasonable contract term)
If i dont get offered the full trade in value then the s10 will be going back, will just have to wait and see.

Same here, took 3 different vid's of every aspect of the phone and factory reset and turning it on and off. My S9+ does NOT have 1 tiny mark on it! Packed it like nobody's business!!! Better than anything I've ever received, especially Samsung lol. If they try to screw me they are gonna have issues with me freezing my Samsung card and fixing the entire situation!!!!!

Good ideas. I'll be packing mine up this weekend hopefully and I'll be sure to video the heck out of it.
I signed up for the trade in but ended up selling my S8+ instead. The terms, as stated above, made me worry so I sold it right after getting my S10+. I had a few small dots on the chassis where there was shiny metal showing, mostly on the bottom and sides of the phone. I must have had some sand or something get into my case because I barely ever removed it and all the dots were covered by my case. The S8+ sells around me for just as much as Samsung offered ($300) so I got what they will charge me for in a few days I guess.
Samsung received my trade in on Wednesday. Waiting for an email from them. Perfect condition s9+

I think this is bit contradictory on one hand it can show normal wear and tear, on the other hand it must have no damage or blemishes ! (this could easily be argued as an unreasonable contract term)
If i dont get offered the full trade in value then the s10 will be going back, will just have to wait and see.

Does anyone know what their policy is regarding screen burn-in? I am waiting for an S10 which I'm upgrading from an S9, which has a mild case of screen burn-in. It is barely noticeable and is only visible when the background is white. It's basically a ghost of a few home screen icons at the bottom of the screen.

Not heard re my s7 trade in yet and that's the one I'm worried about because it definitely showed signs of wear and tear, no cracks, but a few light scuffs to the screen and back glass

I've wondered about scratches. They say normal wear and tear and only specifically mention cracks. My trade is being delivered today and I was hoping for a little better than 8 days.
They got my S8 on March 8, but I haven't received any confirmation from Samsung regarding the status of my trade-in at all
They received my s9+ on the 13th. Still waiting for word from them

Since Samsung isn't even handling the trade-in at all, I wonder how Ingram Micro and Samsung handle the inspections. I'm guessing Ingram Micro does the inspections on so many phones and then sends a report to Samsung on a weekly basis. I'll bet they have a ton of phones waiting on inspection.
EDIT: I noticed that my replacement has been delivered and that changed something on my order. The note over on the right about if you don't want to trade don't send the trade-in has disappeared. That was there on my order until the trade was delivered today.

Update: I just received an email today from Samsung said my trade-in was successful. My S8 has a quite significant dent on the top right of the body when I dropped the phone. Also the screen has a severe problem with the pink line (half of the screen is tinted with pink color). With all of that problem, I was surprised that my trade-win got through without a single hiccup.
