Ahhh what a relief!! Downgraded back to lollipop and is sure yummier than marshmallow which is in my opinion samsung didn't optimize for note 5 in order to force us all to note 7 (7 instead of 6 and u expect a huge leap forward but i am not buying this new device for an extra 500 mah battery and an iris scanner that's a gimmick feature at best. waiting for 8 running nougat) .
With marshmallow I had all sorts of bugs
huge battery consumption, and a general heat issue that I couldn't figure out despite multiple resets
I hated the phone period.
This downgrade made me remember why I bought it in the first place.
All day battery with 4 to 5 hours SOT
on gsam battery i get like 1 to 4 percent max decline in battery max per hour on heavy usage vs 6 to 12 on marshmallow despite running greenify and activating aggressive doze
25 degree celsius battery on 5.1.1 vs north of 29 on marshmallow
Very smooth ui. No heat.
I didn't switch to another rom because I didn't want to mess with my warranty or tip knox as i keep my phones in mint conditions to sell them when i buy new ones
after rolling back to 5.1.1., the device started downloading marshmallow on its own despite disabling "check for updates manually" in system updates so i bought package disabler pro from play store and disabled service updates (there are 2 of them and i disabled both)
the only drawback i can see is the sensitivity of the fingerprint sensor, missing 2 to 3 attempts per day vs non miss at all on M but i can live with that.

I am about to buy and phone and i am reading and reading reviews about Nexus 6 vs Note 4, i don't know what to buy because after reading all that my mind is not working well, could you please help me to choose what phone should i have?
P.S i heard battery life on Nexus 6 is not good, is it true? :fingers-crossed:

Battery life is great on the Nexus 6 especially on Marshmallow. Under 30% a day with full time data and wifi and moderate use. I only use Battery Saving location, it"s accurate enough unless you're navigating your car.
As for the question itself, I too was choosing between these two, but I was searching for a device to develop on rather than just use it, so it clearly made the decision easy. First in Europe the official unlocked device is the Exynos one, I didn't want a locked device, it's a nuisance and since I was about to trip Knox the first day, it's a phone you can't sell later.
So the Note 4 has a better camera, it's not as huge (I had a Note 3 before), and the S-Pen that I never really used, but other people love it.
Also before I decided to buy a new phone for development, I was already using cm12.1 on my Note 3, and was looking for something even more stock than cyanogenmod. So there was not an option for me to go Touchwiz again.
So if you make up your mind what you are wanting this phone for, then I hope I helped to choose.

Battery life for me is great 40% at least at the end of the day. Speakers are stellar as is the screen, camera is good can't complain.

I just bought an N6 about 2 months ago, and I have loved every second of it. I came from a Samsung Galaxy S3, so I would definitely not recommend buying a note 4. I am amazed that I was able to handle a GS3 for that long given how locked-down the software was. It took me no time to unlock, flash TWRP, root, and get a custom ROM running on my Nexus, whereas I was never able to do more than Xposed + root on my old phone. The software is amazing (and can be whatever you want it to be), the camera is nice (except for some strange autofocus bugs), and everything works like a charm.
As far as battery, I usually got 3 hrs SOT over about 18hrs (wifi, 4g, location, and always-on voice all turned on) running stock. With my current setup with Chroma ROM and kernel, I got 4hrs SOT over 18hrs yesterday even with a strange bug that caused mobile radio to suck up a third of my battery. Plus with Doze, standby time is unbeatable.
Hands down, go with a Nexus. I'm never going back.

I bought my nexus 6 a month ago and it is amazing! My battery life on stock was around 5 - 5.5 SOT, but now, after unlocking and rooting, with custom kernel and doze I get around 6-7 SOT!! Keep in mind that I don't use location, brightness is often on low levels, data is on 3G, but I am web surfing a lot, watching youtube, on tapatalk and whats app. Also nexus 6 will be among firsts to receive latest updates, patches and bug fixes straight from google. The speakers are really loud and great, and you get used to phone's size very fast. Camera is ok, nothing special, works just fine with third party apps...

Nexus screen is gorgeous (same resolution as Note 4 at Quad HD) but not as bright, most likely. Nexus will have no lag, and the battery should be no problem getting through a day

Lollipop or Marshmallow when it comes to battery?

I've been using a MM based rom for sometime now, but from the start I've noticed that battery life has been way less impressive than it used to be. When on LL, two days of moderate use was not something unusual for me, but with MM I haven't last more than a day not a single time, on a busy day my phone can die in 16 hours. My battery is rather new, about 6 months old and really well taken care of.
So, what's your opinion? Is LP more gentle on our phones than MM?

Actually, in the beginning it seemed like LP was friendlier but after months of use, I have to say MM is excellent.
It's very smooth and in comparison to ask the rest of the phones I currently own, all 2017, it's battery lasts forever.
I can never quite get to two days but certainly a day and change.

Services and controls in MM are updated and with that comes better battery if you know how to set everything up.
Also, stock should no longer be an option for Note 4. I'm getting better performance AND battery on ported roms... because they're better programmed and updated, where as Note 4's firmware is now stagnant.
Get a NOTE 5 or NOTE 7 port, get the right Kernal, you will NOT regret it. Changed my life.

Marshmallow is better! The only reason there was ever a dispute over this, Is because in the early stages of marshmallow there were bugs and problems, but now all is good.
Marshmallow added much more features. Anytime you add more code and processes, I don't care how little they are, they're gonna use some power. Hence why your battery drain. But for me marshmallow had been smooth and more secure.

Question Xiaomi MI 11 Ultra Battery & Overall experience

I'm currently a Rog Phone 5 user who is looking to get a new secondary device. There's so many options out there but I'm stuck between the Mi 11 Ultra, Honor Magic 3 Pro Plus & Huawei P50 Pro.
Main thing for me is battery life & speaker quality. I've seen YouTube battery tests with the mi11 ultra & they look below average or average at best. But these videos on YouTube are few months old & obviously the mi11 ultra has had software updates which I hope have increased battery performance. I know the battery life isn't as good as my Rog Phone 5, but, how good is the actually battery with the latest update(s)? I'm not a gamer. But I do use camera, YouTube, web browsing & maps frequently. Also, I heard the speakers are great, how good are they compared to the Rog phone 5?
The Huawei p50 Pro only has 1 review because it's based in China only ATM (I can import it though). But, that review says that it heats up alot and the video recording is underwhelming. The only thing better than the rog phone 5 is probably the camera + screen

120hz+wqhd+4g can last about 6h on screen, with medium gaming time
Camera is very good (of course rog5 cant have a Chance)
Light use the phone with warm up a bit
Cons: problem with too large sensor of camera, img easily got blur at edge

You will get 6.5 hours to 7 hours SOT if you use the entire battery from 100% to 1% this is on 120Hz+WQHD
But this also depends upon when do you use the device. For example if you charge it and straight away use it for an extended period of time, you will obviously get a better SOT. If you charge it and keep it overnight standby, and then use it intermittently with brief periods of dozes obviously you will get less SOT. That said you will get atleast a day of usage and then some, if you don't game a lot. Camera drains the battery like crazy. So that's another variable.
Heat-I don't know what expectations you have from your phone but the normal operating temperature for this phone and Snapdragon 888 chips in general is 32-40 degree Celsius in normal usage. It fluctuates. Heat dissipation is excellent and hence you feel the surface and chassis getting hot. On charging the temperatures reach 40-42 degrees in later stages. Haven't gamed on this phone, but on camera usage, the temperature easily reaches 47-48 degree Celsius within 10-15 min of usage. Beyond 47 degrees it warns you the exposure won't work unless you cool down the phone, you can still use the camera but do so at your own risk. At this point if you are using this phone without a cover or case, it will become unbearable to hold specially the metal frame and also top back of the phone where the camera module is. All this ofcourse varies with ambient temperatures and I have provided an account with ambient temperature of 35-38 degree Celsius.
It has excellent speakers bested only by your own device the ROG phone 5. So for anyone else it would be an upgrade but for you it might feel like a downgrade if you compare side by side. There is no proper vent for top speaker, it is actually a dual eapiece speaker set. The grill on the top is just for aesthetics.
Cameras are the reason we all are with this device and they are exceptional. The most versatile camera system this year. Coming from ROG phone 5 it would seem like a massive massive upgrade.
Software is the Achilles Heal of this device. MIUI is a great ROM but notorious for its bugs. The updates are few and far in between. Compare it to any other smartphone launched this year and it falls far behind when it comes to Software Support. Ofcourse this varies by region, China for example gets weekly updates, India for example has recieve only one update since the July launch here. Compare this to OnePlus 9Pro which has received excess of 3 updates within one month. Most people switch their ROM to Xiaomi dot EU or China ROM.
Do I regret buying this phone - No because it was an excellent bang for the buck. I chose this over OnePlus 9 Pro, Samsung S21+, Vivo x60pro+ and iPhone 12. It was cheapest of them all with better feature set. The only lacking feature in Mi 11 Ultra was lack of variable refresh rate/LTPO display so the display is locked between 120Hz and 60Hz. This adds to heating, and worsens the battery life. If it had LTPO display like others I don't think this phone would be having any deficiency compared to others and the battery life would truly feel like the one we should get with a 5k mAh battery.
Does that mean I am very satisfied with my purchase? No. My two biggest qualms are the Heat and the software support or lack thereof. Indian MIUI is a bit buggy but nothing major. Bugs like Dark Mode-q patching white text black on black background in a couple of apps, calender unable to calculate date interval. Minor stuff. But there has been no update to fix or limit the heating issues and it seems the only update we will get this year is the MIUI Enhanced Edition update that will have different performance mode using which we can limit some heat. This and maybe MIUI 13 by the end of the year.
I can't comment on the other two devices as they are not available here, but having used Flagships before (OnePlus) my no 1 requirement was Camera. But also the package as a whole. If another phone had better feature set and cameras in the price range I was looking for would have certainly opted for it. Like Vivo had excellent cameras but no IP rating, inferior display protections, smaller battery for exact same price here. So although the cameras were excellent I didn't opt for it mainly because of these issues as well as lack of commitment from Vivo to provide 3 years or even 2 years of updates. Also community support has been excellent for Xiaomi Phones and very poor for Vivo, you can check here on XDA.

Thank you very much for this thorough and detailed response you've basically made my mind up for me and I won't be purchasing it. Heat is concerning as it seems that it heats up more than the Rog 5. I highly appreciate your response, many many thanks

U r wrong with "the display is locked between 120Hz and 60Hz". It will be variable depend on what app u r using. So people have some trick to make the display stick with 120Hz all the time

If it had LTPO display like others I don't think this phone would be having any deficiency compared to others and the battery life would truly feel like the one we should get with a 5k mAh battery.
Does that mean I am very satisfied with my purchase? No. My two biggest qualms are the Heat and the software support or lack thereof. Indian MIUI is a bit buggy but nothing major. Bugs like Dark Mode-q patching white text black on black background in a couple of apps, calender unable to calculate date interval. Minor stuff. But there has been no update to fix or limit the heating issues and it seems the only update we will get this year is the MIUI Enhanced Edition update that will have different performance mode using which we can limit some heat. This and maybe MIUI 13 by the end of the year.
I can't comment on the other two devices as they are not available here, but having used Flagships before (OnePlus) my no 1 requirement was Camera. But also the package as a whole. If another phone had better feature set and cameras in the price range I was looking for would have certainly opted for it. Like Vivo had excellent cameras but no IP rating, inferior display protections, smaller battery for exact same price here. So although the cameras were excellent I didn't opt for it mainly because of these issues as well as lack of commitment from Vivo to provide 3 years or even 2 years of updates. Also community support has been excellent for Xiaomi Phones and very poor for Vivo, you can check here on XDA.

I thought the display is variable from 30hz 60hz to 120hz on what content is on the screen

But this also depends upon when do you use the device. For example if you charge it and straight away use it for an extended period of time, you will obviously get a better SOT. If you charge it and keep it overnight standby, and then use it intermittently with brief periods of dozes obviously you will get less SOT. That said you will get atleast a day of usage and then some, if you don't game a lot. Camera drains the battery like crazy. So that's another variable.
Heat-I don't know what expectations you have from your phone but the normal operating temperature for this phone and Snapdragon 888 chips in general is 32-40 degree Celsius in normal usage. It fluctuates. Heat dissipation is excellent and hence you feel the surface and chassis getting hot. On charging the temperatures reach 40-42 degrees in later stages. Haven't gamed on this phone, but on camera usage, the temperature easily reaches 47-48 degree Celsius within 10-15 min of usage. Beyond 47 degrees it warns you the exposure won't work unless you cool down the phone, you can still use the camera but do so at your own risk. At this point if you are using this phone without a cover or case, it will become unbearable to hold specially the metal frame and also top back of the phone where the camera module is. All this ofcourse varies with ambient temperatures and I have provided an account with ambient temperature of 35-38 degree Celsius.
It has excellent speakers bested only by your own device the ROG phone 5. So for anyone else it would be an upgrade but for you it might feel like a downgrade if you compare side by side. There is no proper vent for top speaker, it is actually a dual eapiece speaker set. The grill on the top is just for aesthetics.
Cameras are the reason we all are with this device and they are exceptional. The most versatile camera system this year. Coming from ROG phone 5 it would seem like a massive massive upgrade.
Software is the Achilles Heal of this device. MIUI is a great ROM but notorious for its bugs. The updates are few and far in between. Compare it to any other smartphone launched this year and it falls far behind when it comes to Software Support. Ofcourse this varies by region, China for example gets weekly updates, India for example has recieve only one update since the July launch here. Compare this to OnePlus 9Pro which has received excess of 3 updates within one month. Most people switch their ROM to Xiaomi dot EU or China ROM.
Do I regret buying this phone - No because it was an excellent bang for the buck. I chose this over OnePlus 9 Pro, Samsung S21+, Vivo x60pro+ and iPhone 12. It was cheapest of them all with better feature set. The only lacking feature in Mi 11 Ultra was lack of variable refresh rate/LTPO display so the display is locked between 120Hz and 60Hz. This adds to heating, and worsens the battery life. Couldn't say it any better. That's my thoughts exactly. One more thing i noticed is the signal reception. If the reception is average or below don't expect to make the day. I worked on a place with below average 4g and 3g signal, without changing my habits of usage the battery was 25-30% around 15:00 in the afternoon. It was so bad that i ordered a battery case to double it's battery life so i can get home without running out of battery. On my new site i'm getting home with 65-70% at about 19:00 in the evening with the very same usage as everyday. So the phone is very signal dependant. More than any other device i've had. But if you're on wifi or usually in areas with proper reception you shouldn't have any problems.

I always make the same use of my phones, and the M11U has better battery life than my previous Oneplus 7T Pro and Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

I haven't seen a significantly better phone yet in every area
There's the odd phone that does 1 thing better but nearly everything else is sub par
If I saw a better phone id buy it but there's literally nothing on the market yet

Question Impact MFD on battery and heat

Hello, I got a Zenfone 8 from Amazon Warehouse with MFD 4-21. Just after receiving i read about the Ramdump issues with 4-21 and 5-21 MFD, so far nothing happened to my phone. My problem is just the bad battery life and heating issues. I optimized bluetooth (do not know if I disabled optimisation for it), with this I got a little more battery and heating in pocket got less.
Also I flashed Kirisakura Kernel with the hope of getting enough battery life out of the phone to last through the day. Compared to my previous phone (Unihertz Atom XL) I have got much worse battery life. The old phone got about 4300 mah and a smaller screen, but it was in no way optimized and still had about 50% on the end of the day. With the Zenfone on the other hand I get from the morning 06:00 (90 % charge limit) to about 14:00 and would have to recharge. Usage is the same (Health app which is activated every 5 min and needs BT, some news-browsing)
I am now thinking about sending the phone back and switching to a refurbished Pixel 5 (which schould have better battery) or get a brand new Zenfone 8. I like the look and feel of the phone very much, but I do not want to have to charge throughout the day.
If the thermal and battery problem would be from that, that the phone is manufactured in April 2021 I would rather order a brand new Zenfone 8 (in the hope in getting really a new one with MFD end 2021).
What are your thoughts on this?

Hello, with hot environmental temps, phone heats up easily and that's normal if you're running stock Soc values/bloated OS.
The only way to reduce that, is to install a vanilla rom like Los 19.1 or AEX/Omni (at worst with microG or smallest gApps) and limit a bit the max frequencies for both Cpu and Gpu.
No miracles at all but really acceptable

Until now I did not have phones which get hot (rather warm) during normal use, also not during summer. Under heavy games this is normal for sure, and expectable.
Are there any disadvantages in using one of the custom roms? I had lineageos on older phones (Galaxy S5 and Oneplus 6t), with the Oneplus there were some problems and I did not see any advantage in using it. Is everything running smooth and working? If not what function is affected by which rom?
I read in another thread that someone managed to get over 8 hours SOT with LOS, this would be nice if there is no disadvantage in functionality and usage.
So you would not recommend to replace the "old" Zenfone with a new one with newer MFD?
I find it a pitty that such a nice phone has those problems, this is why I thought about switching to a Pixel 5 (size, camera, battery and (community) support).

The main reason for the heat issue is the bad built 888, and in our compact dimensions can only be worse than expected.
If you can go vanilla, that's for sure the best option in consumption/temp terms, otherwise even microG or at worse with smallest gApps you'll be in a better situation than stock, still tweaking freqs as I said above by default .
Bugs might be on NFC payments department, shouldn't there be in any other side, considering these A12 roms are on "first weeks of global tests".
On Los you loose Asus Camera and Dialer as their best apps, but you can go with gCam though with pretty results.
Omni/AEX should also have FM radio if you're interested in and Asus camera.
Since you're already rooted, it's just a matter of a Format to go with any rom, and an eventually second Format to go back easily with the Asus A12 RAW file.
I was forgetting....only a newer device than, let's say November 2021, might give you a real "ramdump proof" device, but heat remains the same, unless they also modified heat dissipation that's most unlikely to happen.

I installed MicroG, this helped with battery life, but brought also disadvantages (calendar, contacts). I also got a Pixel 5 to test, and am until now more for the P5. The battery lasts me a full day and this without taking the disadvantages in usability on me. With MicroG the battery life still was not as I would like it to be.
I liked the ROM of Asus, especially because of the battery options and modes, also the options for Dual Band Wifi and Hyperfusion (Wifi + Data).
I am thankful for your recommendations. But I am tending to stay with the Pixel where I do not need to do so much to the software to work for me.

My concern is that I'm I'm no longer getting android upgrades, not getting feature upgrades and not getting security patches because my phones no longer supported. My main concern with a cell phone is one that's trouble free, has a battery that will hold up throughout the day and is supported.
If I upgrade today with an unlocked Pixel 7 Google will give me $150 on a trade in of my Pixel 3. Part of me says pull the trigger while part of me questions whether any problems with the Pixel 7 will be resolved by waiting for the 7A or the 8. If I wait the price might be higher and/or the trade-in value less so I'm looking for some opinions from existing Pixel 7 owners.
So, is the Pixel 7 stable and reasonably problem free or are there sufficient concerns with the Pixel 7 that would cause me to hold off?

I bought Pixel 7 about a week ago.
I clean flashed the february update and i have zero issues. The fingerprint thing people mention are from my experience due to very dry hands.
I'd say it's the best damn phone i ever had. (coming from OnePlus6 so i had quite high expectations for software) but dang unbelievable camera.
I was also thinking to wait and in the end. After 8 comes 9 and afrer 9 comes 10.

Personally after s21fe I'm not impressed by camera in Pixel 7. It does not have shutter lag but it's slightly better in good light (I'm not even sure) and I feel like it's worse at low light without night mode (and night mode kicks in relatively fast on Pixel).
Phone is good but fingerprint sensor is bad. Sometimes it's not working (if finger is too dry or too wet I guess) but I never had that problem with s21fe or Nord 2 (but they both sucked with update delivery time, Nord 2 insanely).
Good phone if you can get nice deal on it. I thibk if you're not crazy like me about fast delivery of updates they're better phones in its price.

Hi, I was also waiting for the 7a, then thought, na, I got a P7 for AU$500... it was a week old. I know the P7a will be a little smaller ( 6.1") I upgraded from a P5 and its roughly the same width but 10mm taller. Getting use it it fast. You will also miss out on Andoid 16, as the 7a is released in August and Android is released in October, normally. Something to consider.
