Stock factory reset help - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
Hope someone is able to help, I have an Mi5 Pro and simply wanted to do a factory reset of the stock MiUi. My phone is global rom version completely stock.
I simply backed everything up, then went into settings --> about --> factory reset
After the phone seemed to do the reset it came back with a screen with the image of a phone and a cable asking to be plugged in.
So I installed the Mi PC software and the phone drivers, restarted the PC and plugged the phone in.
It recognises that it's been plugged in and the PC software starts to 'look for updates' then I get the error "Reading Device Information Failed"
I've tried to get into Fastboot but every time I do, the phone wont go past the Fastboot logo screen with the white creature repairing the android.
All I wanted was to do a stock factory reset.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Cheers,
Matt

The "screen with the image of a phone and a cable asking to be plugged in" comes when you try to boot into recovery. Because the bootloader is locked it won't allow to reboot in recovery and will show this screen.
I'll suggest, download the latest MIUI rom from en.miui.com and flash through fastboot.

I have a LG straight talk phone an after I factory reset it ask for a pin /password to decrypt
IMEI: 356810-06-202592-1

I'm a having a similar issue, when I try to factory reset my Mi5 vía Settings, it suddenly turns off and when I get it to turn on (because it's difficult, I don't know exactly how I did it) nothing was erased.

Here is my reply on another thread

Note stuck in OTA mode - Upgrading from 4.0.4 to JB

Hello everyone,
I seem to have a problem upgrading my GT-N7000 to JB, the phone downloaded a 494MB update, and restarted to FOTA mode.
The progress bar went from 0-100% in about 15-20mins, but the phone has since then not completed the FOTA.
If I restart the phone by long-pressing power key, the FOTA restarts, but again gets stuck at the 100% mark. Pressing Vol Keys and powering on makes no difference.
Further the phone isn't recognised in Windows - says 'Device Malfunction'. The cable is fine, as it works with another phone.
My bad luck it was, the phone data isn't backed up - I never expected anything to go wrong. Is there a remote possibility of data recovery before I wipe the phone?
Now, how do I get back access to my phone, and how do I complete the upgrade, or reset the phone? I would be grateful if you help me or guide me how to proceed. Taking it to the service point would be the last resort, I want to try out everything I can before I send this in - it's out of warranty.
Regards
Abhishek

Dont worry. In general your personnel data are stored in internal SD and external SD, not disturbed by a system install process.
In that situation you'd better to install a new JB4.1.2 ROM using Odin in download mode.
Firstly see what ROM to be flashed. Official stock ROM, custom ROM, download it.
Read how to use Odin in download mode by connection USB PC-phone.
Odin is utility under PC. Download mode on the phone is entered after hold in the same time volume-down, home and power.

Can't factory reset my phone

Hello all
My rooted phone is going to service and I wanted to factory reset it before sending it. I relocked the bootloader but now that I try to factory reset the phone via the Settings meny, the phone reboots but then just shows me the white screen with the options "BOOTLOADER, REBOOT, REBOOT BOOTLOADER and POWER DOWN".
If I select BOOTLOADER I have an option saying FACTORY RESET but it just takes me back to the first menu.
Please help since I really need to send my phone back.
Realized that flashing the stock recovery might help and it did. Below is the link if anyone is experiencing the same thing:

So, what did you do to fix this problem?

Screen Goes Black after Reboot

After my phones battery was fully drained, i kept it for charging and after some time when i tried to restart it
Boot Logo animation appeared, then whole screen gone blank. It just shows the active notification icons and when power button pressed it shows power off option.
I am having the exact same issue. Have you had a luck resolving it?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a few people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?
I had to factory reset my phone.. There was no other way to solve that issue, no other forum moderator is providing solution. There are many threads regarding this issue. Lets hope next update comes soon fixing this issue.
Hmm, ok, thanks. That's probably what I'll resort to doing. I was hoping to find a way to not lose my data. Or at least get a copy of some of it before resetting...
Me too have tried many things for not losing data, my usb debugging was also enabled. But pc didnt recognized any device. There was one article regarding recovering data after factory reset but you need to root your device after u reset ur device. Then you can recover data with DrFone data recovery or Es android recovery. I avoided it because i dont want to lose my warranty.

[Help needed] Stuck at Factory reset at 99%

Hello. After rebranding my phone from PRA-AL00X to PRA-LX1 it's stuck on the Factory reset screen after it gets to 99%. I don't know what to do. I can't enter fastboot either. But I have a question: why when I plug it in, when the factory reset screen is there, my PC makes a sound effect as it's connected to my phone (you know, the usual sound when you plug something into your PC). Can it still be saved? Thank you.
Probably a system partition size complication. Are you using RecoveryOreoNoCheck?
Read this or this.
Something weird happened. So, last night I left my phone to run out of battery. Today, after booting it again it worked. But it rebooted itself after it got into Android, and now it's stuck again on the factory reset process at 99%.
EDIT: I think I managed to figure it out. So, after my phone runs out of battery it restarts normally, into Android. After that I need to let it charge for some time, because of the low battery it may shutdown. I will update soon if I figure it out completely.
EDIT 2: It seems that after I enter my pin to unlock my device it reboots itself. Why is that?
Is there any way I can enter erecovery mode without enabling developer options and usb debugging? Because once I input my pin, my device restarts.
EDIT: Seems like I managed to enter my pin without my device restarting. I think it was restarting because the battery was low.
I have another question. Why after I manage to boot my phone, when I try to reboot to bootloader, it reboots, and enters again the Factory reset screen?

So as stated from the user on that link who solved the problem, try formatting the system partition then try to install the update again.
Regarding your other posts, if the update installation obviously failed or encountered some issues then by some coincidence it boots back, that doesn't mean it got fixed. The problem is still there and will become even a bigger problem, if it's not fixed.
You don't have to enable Developer Options or USB Debugging, to boot into eRecovery.

The problem is, I can't enter bootloader nor erecovery. I'll try to factory reset with the phone booted up.
EDIT: After factory resetting from settings, when the phone was booted up, it works now. I tried to reboot it and it reboots fine, without the factory reset screen appearing. And thank you very much for your help. I will now try to install Oreo for PRA-LX1.
The only problem I have now, is: my system version is now named NRD90M test-keys.
EDIT: I fixed my phone. I reinstalled through eRecovery the newest available EMUI version and NRD90M test-keys dissapeared. Now it works fine, even if I am on Nougat. I am waiting for the EMUI 8 update, this time not forcing my phone to install it.

Hi,
I have the same issue with Phone Always going to factory reset.
Only draining it makes it boot up normally.
I also did the factory reset from within android. Now it does a factory reset lowlevel and again it hangs on 99%.
Did you also have this?

Stuck on Welcome screen after factory reset

Hello there,
I've just found my old GT-S5300 from back in the day, and I tried turning it on to eventually use it again.
The issue is that when turning on, I get the usual "Welcome to GT-S5300" screen, and it tells me to "Touch the Android to begin"; when trying to do so, my phone doesn't let me go to the next screen to connect to Google and all the miscellaneous steps that come later. The touch screen does react, I can change the language/type a number in emergency call, the Android flashes when I touch it but it doesn't let me go to the next step.
I have tried factory resetting/wiping cache & data but nothing does it, I keep getting stuck on the same screen.
I even tried flashing a custom ROM and the stock ROM, but it seems my phone can't read the SD card I insert in it, I don't know why (32GB, works on other devices).
I have CWM Recovery installed so whenever I go to Recovery mode I have the CWM Recovery menu which appears.
Before burying it in my closet, my phone was indeed rooted.
Do you have any idea if there is a way to use this phone again? Thank you!
