As the title says...I'm considering doing root in my V2. I just got my replacement note an hour ago. I immediately paused the update because I read somewhere on here that once you update, you won't be able to root. I was looking forward to root till I started thinking about what types of abilities I would actually lose by rooting?
What I can think of from the top of my head is:
1) No Samsung/Android pay
2) Some games won't let you play if you're rooted.
3) Some games won't let you play if you have xPosed installed (such as Marvel Future Fight)
4) Can't do software updates to make my phone faster/fix anything that is wrong (can't I just install the software updates after installing root? Or will that just remove the root?)
5) Voids warranty
Anything else I might lose?
I'm excited for xPosed cause I need me some modules such as snapprefs, and youtube playing in the background. I also like having the ability to change things around the device and such
Is there a way to get around the "xPosed detected" in those types of games by the way?
Luckily for you, the current root does not trip knox
1) Samsung pay will not work, but with right xpose set up Android pay will. The good news is if you ever go back to stock, Samsung pay will work again (knox not tripped)
2) Some games indeed will not work, but with the right xpose app you can fix this by hiding root from it.
3)I did not know that! They getting fancy now...but I can see reason why. I guess no Marvel Future Fight for you if you have xposed than. I know you can hide root from apps, not sure you can hide xposed from apps.
4)You cannot do software update, this is true. The run around for this is to wait for a developer, or even Jovy do a deodex of the new update and you can install that while keeping your old bootloader (for root to work). There is a possible downside to this...samsung is known to make their software run very funny if you are not on the corresponding bootloader. P.S. I never recommend taking a software update while you are rooted (assuming it will even install depending on what you have frozen or block). Just dont risk it.
5) TECHNICALLY your warranty will not be voided with current root method. Knox not tripped = Warranty in place.
As you can see, you are not really loosing much.

This is the first Android device I've own that I feel no need to root. Sure I'd love to have Viper4Android running but can't justify all I'd lose to run one app that requires root.

Hi. I have a MJ5 Note 3 rooted via Kingo, and it is completely stock other than that. The KNOX counters are still 0x0 and the Binary is still Samsung Official. However the system status shows Custom and I get the Custom padlock icon during boot. I have seen some references to Triangle Away being able to fix this on the Verizon variant. Has anyone tried Triangle Away on our N900A to remove the custom status? I'm a little hesitant to try it, because I don't want to chance it making one of the settings worse instead of better. I would like to hear if anyone has tried it on this phone and what the result was.
Thanks
Haven't used that. But Wanam exposed will remove the custom logo

I think it'll work, but why not just use Wanam?
It'll let you do a bunch of other things you want to do too (I don't know what you want to do, but I still feel pretty confident in saying that. The list of tweaks it enables is impressive), so you're going to end up installing it anyway.

To be honest, it is because I am familiar with Triangle Away and it's a simple app install. As for Wanam, I don't know anything about it or how to install it. It sounds like you first need to have the Xposed framework installed which I don't, and have never done either. I see a lot of people referencing Wanam and how useful it is, but I haven't run across a thread here in the AT&T Note 3 group that, explains where to get it and how to install it on the N900A.
Does it work with all firmware versions, is it easily reversible and the same goes for the Xposed framework?
It's an app on the play store. Just follow the instructions when u download it and it will install the framework. You need to be rooted first.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
Xposed framework comes from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401 (I wasn't able to find it in the Play store)
It's one of those things where the app you download installs/uninstalls/manages the framework- it can be reversed by uninstalling through app, and then uninstalling the app.
It is compatible with almost any rooted android 4.0 or higher device.
Wanam comes from the app store, and supports touchwiz roms running android 4.2 or higher.
Those will both work with any version of the note 3 firmware.
I've never used triangle away; I don't understand the motivation for hiding the padlock. I got rid of it with Wanam, but that's certainly not what I got Wanam for.
I just downloaded Wanam and one of the options was to install the framework

Actually what I am trying to do is change the custom system status back to Normal. That is what Triangle Away is capible of doing on some devices that are not running a custom recovery, custom Rom or custom kernel. If all Wanam does is hide the Custom padlock at boot, but the Device status still shows as Custom in the settings, and system still shows Custom in Download mode, then I agree, its not a good use of the tool.

Just checked, Wanam makes it look normal in device status and download mode, it doesn't just remove the padlock.
I still don't understand why we care if it shows custom in device status and download mode. Does this cause problems with some other software?

Ah, I see - I'm not sure how well this will work for hiding your root access from your IT department, since anyone who is even vaguely familiar with android hacking need only look at your app list to determine that you're rooted - otherwise why would you have SuperSU, TiBu, and all the rest of those lovely root-required apps installed.

Did you root while you had MJ5 and it didn't trip the counters? I'm suspicious of this Kingo app because I've never dealt with it before. My phone luckily has an older version so I was able to use the Root DeLaVega without issue, but my wife's Note 3 has MJ5 and I want to root it.
Also, Wanam is awesome. I used it to get rid of the Custom mark as well as many other things I love about my phone.

Yes I rooted while on MJ5 with Kingo and it didn't trip the KNOX counters or change the Binary status. All it did was change the system status to Custom and invoke the pad lock during boot. I installed Xposed Framework and Wanam this weekend and it repaired them both.
Thanks again to everyone who helped me with this process.

Kingo doesn't trip the counters.
There's also this method of rooting, which uses the trick used by RDLV - it's a bit of a big deal, though, since it's meant to be a way to recover from a bricked/mangled device:

I watched a few YouTube videos while researching it, and I found several saying it tripped their KNOX flags, that's why I was worried. I successfully used it to root my wife's Note 3 last night without issue. So I had no problems. She too is on MJ5.

So, I am using PIE from jcase and everything seems to go smoothly until I install XPosed.
Once I soft-reboot in the xposed installer, the device comes back to life but then after the screen is turned off for about 1 minute or more, I lose all root privileges. Funny thing is, any root checkers I run say that my phone still has root.
I really have no idea what could be causing this.
any ideas?
Why not ask in the PIE thread?

OK, I highly doubt that. Cyanogen as I understand it isn't CTS compliant. Therefore, it couldn't work rooted or not. When I turn off Root I can pass a safetynet check. That implies that it SHOULD work with root turned off but it's not guaranteed to function that way. I'll need to check it at a cash register.

When you try it post back, I'm curious and then we'd both know.
Disabling root stopped working a few updates ago. Even on the stock rom. Unlike other companies, who might eventually get to the point where patching workarounds isn't worth it to them, Google seems pretty dedicated to the cat and mouse game.
Also, it is possible for you to add a card and then for you not to be able to use it when you try to pay for something. So for all those who think "I can add a card! Success!", you might want to hold off on the celebrations for a bit.

Hi everyone!
I have a rooted Z3C and it is a fantastic phone, I love it. The problem is that I bought a television sport service that includes the possibility to watch games on your phone, it's called Bein Sport. This app is able to detect root and refuse to play any videos so the service I bought becomes kind of useless
The worst part is that I don't want to mess around, just want to watch games on my phone and use the service for what it was thought. Si I thought i'd give a shout here, has anyone been able to bypass that annoying feature? I don't even understand why they don't like rooted phone
thanks!

There is an Xposed module for masking root on your phone, not sure if it will work or not. There is another Xposed app that offers help as well.
Installing Xposed can sometimes be tricky, make sure you find the right arm zip or you could be facing bootloops.

I use Xposed, it's very popular and works fine on the Z3c. I think the emphasis is to read about it before you do it, as many people rush in, go to downloads, install the one with the latest build number and then come crying to the forum about bootloops.
The fact that you have read ahead on the page before you did anything assures me that you won't mess it up :good:
If it reassures you, I am using xposed-v80-sdk22-arm.zip on a 5.1.1. build. But there are more recent versions out now, although I don't know what the advantages of using those are. Perhaps later versions cover the use of MM. Can anybody enlighten me on that?
Edit: Once you have flashed the installer in recovery, restart the phone and then install XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk
With that installed and running you can find the modules and install them.
Each install or change of settings requires a restart.

Yep, installed, up do date, and some apps even use my root without any issues
If anyone comes here, here is what happened to me: I tried to install Xposed to try this trick but my phone would'nt falsh because it couldn't mount /system. I assumed that it was a problem with partitions. I tried deleting root manually but the app always found root even when I wasn't rooted anymore (beware, this app is pretty smart). I ended up having to go back to stock which sucks because the battery is really bad in comparison, but anyway I can watch football! Cheers
Same old problem: many useful apps need root, Barclays needs UNROOT ... and barclays becomes smarter and smarter every time, not allowing any room for tweaks.
Any hope to have SuperSU cloaked from Barclays Mobile, or somehow to allow apps that need unrooted phones to run in rooted environment?
Thanks.

Thank you for the advice, but imagine you want to use banking app, you unroot, use the app ... then you must wait until you go back home (assuming you were somewhere away from your computer)... just to do again a tedious rooting operation that will be again canceled again in a matter of days... see my point? Is a lot of hassle.
Was hoping there are enough users of rooted phones who also want to benefit of mobile banking features (barclays and other similar apps that don't accept root)...

If it's Android pay , then full unroot and make your device stock again.
If it's not android pay(other banking app), then just full unroot.
It should work(if I'm right).
Thanks to you too @aufarxda ... but that wasn't the point. The question was about a way to circumvent rooting for some apps. To have the phone rooted for obvious advantages (kernel tuning, greenify, etc), but at the same time to be able to use the banking app (barclays). I tried cloaking, but seems to not work. I tried to disable SuperSU, nothing works. Only full unroot works. But guess what: after that my phone won't be rooted anymore. So, see the paradox here?
