HTC M7 SD Card partition Data Recovery - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I wish to know what will be the best way to recover the data on my HTC one m7 I before installing custom Rom missed out on taking backup and formatted the SD card partition too, is there any possible solution available to retrieve the data, I'm looking at photos as that is what I have the maximum and of priority and rest all is fine if it doesn't get recovered. Can any one suggest the best option available now?

Afaik, there is no way to restore data after a "format data". When formatting, your data is erased for real (all bytes set to "0") unlike a wipe where data is only flagged "ok to overwrite" and is still there (unless already overwritten by something else).

Thank you so much for your response @alray

Try GT Recovery from the playstore. You need root to make it work tho.

[Q] Nandroid Backup - Transfer?

Came up with a question/idea...
Would it be possible to transfer backups from one phone to another... as long as its the same build/device?
IE: I build a fresh install of a rom, with several mods, then make a backup, then transfer that backup to a friends 'Stone and he installs it from the OR menu?
Figured i would ask on here before i actually try it & have the possibility of screwing his phone up.
yes
if you have two same model
warning : after recovery please erase data partition (push the factory reset) (if you not two phone has same google account and etc)

It's simpler to not backup the data partition at all.
Can someone please explain to me all the categories I can backup with Nandroid backup?
Specifically what each thing backups (system, data, cache...).
Or if someone could provide me with a link which describes it in detail.
Thanks in advance
SWEET! Just got done with the transfer, and it works perfectly! So... pretty stoked about that! Glad i could do it that way instead of building a rom all over again and doing all the add-ins and everything else. This was much simpler!
you will need to backup the boot, recovery, system partition and after flashing please do erase data/cache

[Q] Does installing new ROM on the XL erase data

As stated in the title, does flashing a new ROM erase data on the built-in flash drive such as contacts, apps, appdata, music, videos, pictures etc?
I'm rather new to ROM flashing.
short answer: Yes with an If, long answer: No -- with a But...
When flashing a new ROM to an Android phone its a good idea to do as its creator has advised and wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache all via ClockworkMod recovery, that way there is no additional bloat ware or old system data to gum up the works,, anything stored on the phone (contacts/system data) is erased anything on the 'internal storage' (8GB or so on the XL) or memory card is spared, so anything backed up to there will be safe
Its worth making note that when first installing a ROM, most if not all work on A2SD/ADSD+/+ etc, this is where your given the option to store app data on the memory card, in devices where you can take out the memory card you will need to format it (via ClockWorkMod recovery) and sort out the size of your 'hidden' EX3/4 partition that app data is stored on. formating and partitioning yor memory card wipes everything on it so back it up to a PC before doing anything!
Additional Note: Since the XL has internal storage make sure you get everything you want off it first then when we have CWM working on the XL format the crap out of the internal storage and have fun!

Ahhhh I see. So if I want to flash a new ROM, I have to back up everything on my own then manually re-enter them.
Thanks for enlightening.
Pretty much yeh, always a good idea to manually do a backup every now and again,, once you have your ex3/4 partition apps data will be restored when you reinstal the app, also Titanium Backup w/root permissions on a fully ROMd device will restore data in the same way too (if you backup with root access the first time etc)

[Q] What to backup before flashing new ROM?

I flashed my initial custom ROM when I first bought my HTC One. I'm on the 4.4.2 Android Rev. GPe ROM. I want to try a different ROM now that perhaps might be a better fit for me.
However, I'm already all, "set up" with my phone now with pictures, music, apps etc. I don't want to lose all this if I do a factory reset. What should I make sure to backup before wiping and flashing to make sure I don't lose any of my personal media/data?
I have already made a TWRP Backup, a Titanium backup of all user apps, and copied the TWP/Titanium Back folders as well as the DCIM and Music Folders to my local hard drive. Is there anything else I am missing should I want to switch back?

You wont lose any pics/music/videos if u wipe. Your apps will go. But Titanium is there for that. Just make sure THAT YOU DON'T WIPE INTERNAL STORAGE

To confirm that I don't accidentally wipe my internal storage like an idiot, when I select "Wipe" in TWRP, I choose "Factory Reset", (both caches obviously), and "Wipe Data"?

1- You should do a nandroid backup.
2- Yes, wipe: Cache, Dalvik, Data (excluding /data/media aka internal storage) for a clean flash;
for a dirty-flash, you only wipe, cache and dalvik (though most installer scripts take care of that anyways).

[Q] Browsing a TWRP backup?

So, somehow I got my phone into a bootloop, and I made a backup of my data partition with TWRP. I reset it, and tried to restore the data partition, and the corrupted file is in there (was trying to edit settings.db for hotspot on Sprint). Anyways, when I restore the data partition, it bootloops again. So I want to get into the backup, and replace the bad settings.db file so I can restore the partition and have all my data back. How can I browse the backup using my windows 8.1 pc?

you cant. why are you restoring your data partition? that wont boot up, since its system that you edited. restore the whole nandroid backup, boot, system, and data. and if you didnt make a backup of boot or system, then reflash your rom to fix it. flash it dirty, as to not lose your data. and if you dont have a rom to flash, then youre stuck having to flash the factory img.

I only did data. The backup was AFTER it was in the bootloop, so I only backed up data.

ahh.. then in no way will it get restored, since its the system partion that you actually messed with. data just holds all your user data, thats all.

That is EXACTLY what I want to restore. All my apps, settings, pictures, etc etc etc.
I've got the phone factory reset, on and working.

well, unfortunately, it doesnt seem to be a good back up
if you factory rest again, have google restore your stuff. itll restore your apps, and main settings, and even wallpaper. and your photos are in your storage already. unless you didnt have it enabled to back up everything in the main settings.

I have never had luck with auto backup. It doesn't seem to capture everything. Plus there were things that I stored on internal storage (used to be my SD card on my Samsung phones ) that wouldn't have been backed up, like my Pokemon saved game. I knew I should have copied my internal storage before trying to restore, but I thought the data backup would have done it. Great.
Not sure if this is what your looking for but try nandroid manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.bkrestore
Edit: thats on device only, sorry about that. I had an issue in the past where I didn't have any apps saved via TiBu and had only a TWRP backup. Installed a clean ROM, rooted and then used the app posted to browse the backup on my phone and restore the vital apps that I needed. (Like google authenticator)... Good luck

unable to mount internal storage due to encryption

Long story short, I've been trying to get into my internal storage via TWRP but its saying that there are 0MB in the internal storage and that there is nothing in the sdcard folder
I've tried formatting it, hasn't worked
I've tried changing the format to FAT and then back to EXT4
then after that didn't work i tried the same but with EXT2 , it showed the amount of storage but still didn't let me see what was inside of the sdcard folder, whenever i'd go in there its just completely empty
Can I please have some help with this, I've been stuck on this for a couple hours now
Ouch! Please don't say that you just formatted userdata (/data).
You've just killed all your data on your phone.
No, I'm not that experienced with TWRP and I don't know which versions under which circumstances it can mount userdata.
I use custom recoveries and just presume that I can't mount userdata in them.
In the normal system (which mounts and decrypts) I use normal tools to sync or backup.

I didn't format data it self i meant that i factory reset it, sorry i should of been a lot more clear on that
Oh, ok.
Well, in any case, if it's encrypted you need to mount it not with a simple "mount" command but something fancier using dm.
They don't try to make it easy to do.
Unless you're destroyed your system and you're trying to recover your data, whatever you're trying to do is best done in the normal system.
never mind i found a fix for it
well not really a fix just a way around it
thanks for the help ^^

I had the same issue so I flashed a raw firmware after taking full system backup. Now TWRP is working fine.
