Well, my LCD panel broke. - Moto Z Force Guides, News, & Discussion

So I was sitting at the bar and saw a piece of something on my screen, so I went to wipe it off with a bit of force and now my screen has a bleeding black dot right in the middle and a line all the way up to the top of the screen. My phone has only experienced one drop and that was about two months ago.
Called Verizon and they gave me the biggest bull**** response of "We cover the Moto Maxx and the Droid Turbo 2, but the shatter shield warranty on the Z Force is different so pay your $200 deductable". Called Motorola and they are sending me a new phone and I can return mine after I receive the new one in the mail. Only thing they did was put a $250 hold on my card till they receive my broken phone then they refund the hold amount.
Just thought I'd share. Looks like Moto covers LCD damage on the Z Force and I was super happy about being sent a replacement before I send mine in.
EDIT: Guess I should say LED panel since it's an OLED display.

Did Motorola tell you about the $25 service fee and the tax in the $250 that they will also charge on your card? They tried to put that all on my card, total about $309 and my card stopped the charge. I argued with Motorola to no end..... Just wondered.

Had the same issue with mine. It happened about a week after I got the phone. Since it was under the 14 days, I was able to return it to the store for a new device. What shocked me was I barely touched it and it caused that to happen.

I had a similar issue a few months back with my MZF. Went straight thru Motorola and used the Advanced Exchange Program. Had a new phone a day or two later and sent in the defective one. The End.

This is good information to have. And it just reinforces that Verzion really does not have OUR best interests in mind.

brown area on screen

i plugged my phone in earlier while it was downloading some podcasts. i came back to it later & found a brownish tinted semi-circle directly opposite the sd card slot. i was on 3g at the time so i'm not sure how long it took to download. anyone ever hear of the sd card slot overheating... or is there something else hardware wise near there that could cause that? i was using the oem charger at the time & i don't have a case on it. have sent an email to htc tech support. phone is unlocked so i guess i will try my luck on warranty service. i have the tmo insurance, but the deductible is $130ish. would rather save that for loss or a traumatic death of the phone.
Check you PM's.
sent email to htc yesterday. brown area grew more overnight. cslled this morning for warranty and/or repair. google congratulated me, saying that i was the first one w/ this issue as far as she knew. they told me 5 business days to get it back... not too bad. i'll be pimpin a cheapo samsung flip phone for a week... great.

The power button on the One

Picked up a One on Saturday, so its still brand new. This morning, I noticed that the power button doesn't 'click' any more. Looking closely, the button seems to be recessed slightly towards the screen. It still turns on the phone, but I have to apply direct pressure with my finger nail.
As I recall, my old Thunderbolt had a weak power button that broke for many people, but the One's button at least looked more resilient. Anyone else seeing this, is it a known issue?
I'm still fully stock and unrooted, debating whether or not I should visit the T-Mobile store and inquire about a replacement. It does have the insurance on it as well.
I haven't heard of anyone complaining of a semi-dead power button yet,. but you should send it back for a warranty claim
At a slightly tipsy moment I thought my power button had fell out, then realised phone upside down...

Haha, I did that too!
The power button should protrude from the plastic on all sides, but only a very tiny bit. If it is recessed at all then it is defective. You should exchange it as I think the problem will only get worse.

Yeah, it already is. Its been getting increasingly difficult to get the display on all day.
I stopped at the TMO store I bought it from this morning to compared it to their display model's button. Its pretty obvious. Unfortunately, they had no stock to replace it with. Its expected to arrive on Weds or Thurs. Hopefully, this is a one time thing.
It is going to be flushed soon with the phone.
I rooted it and installed kernel that enable sweep2wake, etc.
So, Tuesday, when I visited the TMO store, the rep acknowledged the power button as clearly broken and defective, but he had no stock of Ones to replace it with. Today, I called head to verify that they'd received their shipment and had stock.
And I'm pretty sure I ended up speaking with the village idiot. According to her, the power button is not broken because the phone still turns on. Nevermind that you can turn on their floor model with a simple tap with the fleshy part of your finger and mine requires a forceful press with the finger nail. Again, according to her, she could exchange it would require a restocking fee of 50 dollars, something thats apparently hard wired into their sales system and which requires a manager override to get around. When I inquired why they'd knowingly put a defective/broken device back on the shelf for sale, she reiterated that its not broken. Because the screen still turns on. So, I guess under her logic a cracked screen isn't broken if it can still display an image?
I wasn't going to spend an afternoon arguing with her either, since I had to get to work and the manager was off site at a meeting. I confirmed that he would be present tomorrow morning, when I return. Again, which would be my 3rd visit for this, not counting the initial purchase.
If they refuse, then its what? A refurb through insurance or a refurb through HTC? My annoyance meter is definitely rising, and if this isn't resolved correctly tomorrow morning, I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to corporate. And I have the names and business cards of the two individuals who sold me the phone, handling the phone number porting and account set up, as well as the name of the poor rep I spoke with today.

Thats from the AT review in April. My power button does not look like that. It is not raised at all, its actually recessed/below from the surrounding material. My morning with the village idiot has had me stewing all day. :/ The finger nail and force required to hit my power button has scratched the hell out of the IR surface of the button . . . not sure if that'll impact the quality of the IR blaster. But these scratches are quite visible and the phone's not even a week old yet. What would it look like in a month? 6 months? 24 months? I did leave a grandfathered unlimited contract on Verizon to come to TMO . . .thats a one way trip. Annoyance meter currently at 6/10.
I'm on Sprint, but I was outside my 14 day return and noticed one part of my screen was raised up and the other side was recessed slightly. On the 19th day I called Sprint Corporate and had them verify inventory at the Corporate store I purchased it from, then explained my issue over the phone to them. While talking to Sprint CS, I asked for an appointment. She called ahead and when I got there and showed them my screen issue. I stayed firm and asked the manger to compare to new out of the box device. This one was worse. So we ends up with 5 phones on the table and I chose the best of them. Took work but I stead fast and stayed firm. You are a customer. T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon are the distributor. 30 days is a typical cut of date for a manufacturers warranty. The cell carrier will simple submit the phone to HTC for defective issues....

Wheww. Was in the TMO store again this morning. Got a rep with an actual brain in his head. Took him 30 seconds to look at my power button and confirm that it was indeed defective. Swapped the SIM into a replacement, factory reset the old one, printed a new receipt to confirm the swap, bang, done. In and out in 15 minutes, no warranty processing fees or BS restocking fees.
This power button appears to be solid. Now my root timer resets, 30 days. Heh, conveniently right after the One Google Edition launches.

Anyone else RMA for a yellow tint and uneven color?

The bottom of my screen is more yellow than the top so I'm having Moto RMA it. I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar issue. If I wasn't so freak'n picky I'd probably ignore it, but I use landscape a lot and I see it most on the keyboard when in landscape.
Did you ever get your replacement? I have uneven color issues as well, though I'm not sure if its worth the trouble of trying to exchange it.

Curious as well. I'm thinking of re-purchasing now because I think some of the RMA replacement stock was bad batches (at least that's my hope) and the newer ones will have the screen issues sorted.
GOOD LUCK!!! My screen died (just went blank) over a week ago and I still do not have a new device. Moto's RMA and customer service has been the worst ever! I have been told "its shipping tomorrow" for a week now and still no device. The last rep I spoke with said they just do not have replacement devices to ship. I would advise you to keep the yellow screen until Moto has enough stock to ship devices.

I don't currently have one, as I returned the 3rd one I had (1st - bad vibration motor, 2nd/3rd bad uneven color tinting). So I'd have to order anew :/ Guess I should just wait until next year when they've got more stock and fix the screen issues.

It's crazy. This is the first of about 20 android devices I have had that I have not done anything to. I had not even unlocked the bootloader yet and the screen craps out. I understand that stuff like this happens but the whole customer service part has been just awful. I was offered a refund but Moto said that would take 4 weeks??? How do you launch a device and not hold back some stock for warranty issues is beyond me? Thankfully I have a M8 GPE to hold me over.

I think google definitely held back stock for RMAs, as I had no issues getting a 1st and 2nd RMA (for a total of 2 devices after my initial purchase). The problem is they were all manufactured on 10/21 or earlier and had issues so while they had stock to replace them, but were replacing with questionable quality I guess?
I just spoke with customer service last night for RMA. My screen basically looks like a gradient from top left to bottom right. It goes from yellow into pinkish, they basically stated that the devices they are sending out are not technically new or refurbished (at this point). I'm assuming customer returns or defects with packaging. They basically are sending me one, placing a $500 hold and then releasing the hold once they receive my defective unit.

Curious to see how you make out with this. I am still waiting for my RMA'd device since 12/8. Spoke with someone at Moto this morning and they are shipping it today. I have heard that before and I will believe it when I see it. Still no shipping email as of 3:20 eastern time..... Their customer service has been horrible. Hope you have better luck. Keep us posted.
I decided to give it another shot today and ordered a new 32GB CW, hoping I was just unlucky with the 2/3 MB I had that had the pink vs. yellow non-uniform tinting. I know there's no data that indicates the color has anything to do with it, but I'm a superstitious type and hope ordering the white winds up with me getting a good screen haha

GPS. I already refunded my MB purchase and that and the two (attempted) RMAs show as cancelled on Google Wallet.
FYI, the replacements I got had "earlyish" manufacturing dates, so if the bad screens are a function of the date manufactured, RMA'ing now for this may not be a good idea (at least in my experience for the MB one, no idea about CW).

I guess that's one advantage to GPS. My 1st and 2nd RMA were shipped immediately, in one case the same day and I had the replacement the next day.
Well they sent me an ATT phone instead of t-mobile.. BUT the att doesnt have the issue. I'm hoping the correct device I get tomorrow will also be good.
Well my card was charged for $557 so I assume that they will be prompt in sending one out. It's not that big of a deal if it doesn't come in a hurry as long as one gets here without defects. I don't have to send in the defective one until my replacement gets here anyway.
I also have the uneven tint issue. I have been debating about a replacement. Not sure what to do.

Well it depends on how much it bothers you. After spending $700 on a phone I do plan on getting a phone with a non defective screen. It's getting really annoying watching the colors go from warm to cool as I read from left to right.

Agreed. I plan on keeping my phone for 2-3 years, so I need to make sure I'm completely happy with it. I just called Google to ask about having mine replaced. They said they're sending out a brand new unit, so we'll see how that one looks. I'll report back when I have it in hand.
My replacement came today. Its looks great. While my last phone had a little pink when at lowest brightness. This one has NONE.

Screen Defect

I don't know if this has been covered yet . Today I dropped my phone and the screen shattered. Well when I called verizon to start the insurance claim the Verizon rep informed me that all turbo owners are entitled to 1 FREE super cleaning. She then said that the screen would be included in that and that as long as there wasnt physical damage on the edges that I'd be getting a new free phone or slightly used. Appearently all the first run Turbo's have defective glass and thats how there going about fixxing the issue with phones already in the field.

Thats great news. I vaguely recall reading something about this back when the Turbo was first released. Sure enough I found this page from Verizon that confirms Turbo owners receive 1 free screen replacement within the first 2 years of owning their phone. Though I haven't seen anything indicating its because the screen is defective - in fact, that page actually states it has nothing to do with that (though I suppose its possible they wouldnt actually admit that).
Thanks for the info!

Verizon offering the 1 free screen was actually announced before the phone went live. It's not because there's some sort of crazy defect. It's an incentive. That's also why they waived all the activation fees. Not because there's some crazy activation fee bug. But because they want you to buy the phone lol

Guys,Please post snap of your back panel, near the volume keys

I believe my back panel is slightly raised near the volume keys, I see small gap there. I don't have any other phone to post snaps at this moment, Will you please put zoomed snaps of your back panel near the volume keys.. Would like to confirm if it is a issue with my handset only or it looks same for other handset too.
Thanks a lot.
plss guys help
This has been brought up a few times in the forums already. From what I have heard, Moto has already acknowledged the issue and will take care of it. If you look at these two threads, you can see pictures of member's phones with the issue, from very minor all the way to extreme circumstances.

If you must have a photo, here is mine. The issue on my personal phone is very minor (I wouldn't have even realized it if it weren't for those links above) and gets just a little bit worse if the phone gets warm. However, even at its worst, I can barely get under the back cover with my fingernail.
I am not able to post a photo right now, but I can confirm the back cover is ever so slightly raised between power and volume buttons on my Nexus 6. I can't say if it has been like that from day one, but is so minor right now that it doesn't bug me. If it gets worse I'd probably get a cheap replacement back from eBay instead of going through an RMA process.
Here's a picture of mine, which has an almost undetectable gap. Unchanged since I purchased it.

Going by the above, in the most cases I would suggest the answer would be "yes"
Thanks to all those who posted. Mine is quite similar to you guys, very slightly raised. I guess ill keep an eye , if its get worse then go for replacement.
I just took mine back yesterday to T-Mobile store and had it replaced. Mine was slightly raised at store then when I got home and set it up and actually played a few games I decided to take the back off because I felt dampness on my right hand and was confused. Thought maybe it was sweat, but to my surprise when I took case off the back panel had a huge gap/bulge right around the volume buttons.!? But what really freaked me out is the liquid that was coming out of it as well. I managed to push the panel back down and as I was doing this this liquid was oozing out from that whole side. I immediately call T-Mobile store where I purchased it and was told not to use the device and turn it off and don't charge it.
When I took device to store they where vary concerned and the rep. Actually called a rep. At Motorola about the situation. At least that's what the sale rep. At T-Mobile said. They immediately gave me a new device and a free case / cover for the phone and sent me on my way.
I don't know what the rep at Motorola told the sale rep. But he did say they are taking a serious look at this issue. It seems to be a battery issue and some batteries are actually bursting. IDK but I have a new one now with no issues and love this device.

Hi
I just got mine from Tmo and start to notice this problem just like yours, i need to ask if the back case does help in this situation?
do i have to worry about it?
This means most of the devices have this back panel issue. Mine is 64GB one, so its not just 32GB that have the issue
I just called Tmo and they were very helpful and after 5 minutes of hanging up the phone they had shipped a new-brand device (as he told me they will). and i have to ship them the defective device. they also credit my account 10$ for me to ship the device
it should arrive tomorrow i hope the new one will be OK

I would return as soon as possible if your seeing any gaps in back panel. I not only had a bulge in mine but also had a mysterious liquid coming out of it. I know its hard to believe ,I wish I would have taken a picture but I didn't. Trust me just return it for another device.

I have something similar however its very minor. If I push with my nail it maybe moves 0.5mm
Mine looks like this http://images.anandtech.com/doci/8687/IMG_0152.JPG
I replaced my back cover when they became available on ebay because there were some scuffs from the factory and the covers were only about $8. The new one is raised slightly. You can push it down but it raises back up over time. I would imagine any replacement will do the same until they address the adhesive on the back,
